Volunteers Congregation Staff Hexham Abbey News 18th & 25th February 2018 Being Chaplain to the Abbey Branch of the Mothers Union and having helped organise the Archdeaconry Festival at the Abbey last Ascension Day there s now no escape... This Thursday Matthew was admitted as a full member by branch leader June Olliver with friends from the deanery including leader Anne Brunton. He was also welcomed by Vice President of Lindisfarne Archdeaconry Sheila Walker. Matthew said: Being part of the Mothers Union has been one of the curious highlights of my time at the Abbey so far. I ve genuinely appreciated the fellowship and camaraderie. It was about time I joined! I m grateful to June and our members for their support. It was a lovely morning. If anyone else is interested in the work of the Mothers Union please get in touch with June Olliver ( ); anyone is welcome to attend a meeting. Hexham Parish Magazine February 1918 Hugh Dixon has been looking through the archives and has found some interesting extracts from the Hexham Parish Magazine, These give a fascinating insight into the Hexham Parish as it was 100 years ago. The Military authorities have appealed to the Church Missionary Society to reopen its Medical Work in Palestine at the earliest possible moment for the relief of acute suffering among the natives. This request should come with special force to the Diocese of Newcastle, which had the privilege of giving considerable help to the late Dr Sterling, a Newcastle man, in building Gaza Hospital, now brought to ruins by the Turks. The County Committee has therefore decided to appeal for a special fund of 1,000 as a memorial to Dr Sterling and as an immediate and hearty response Syria s thousands must not go sick and unattended in the very land where Charity was born. On Wednesday there was a tea provided for the Band of Hope Children, numbering 230. After tea, a conjurer delighted them by giving a most amusing entertainment. Before they went home each child was presented with a gift. The children enjoyed themselves thoroughly, and went home with a bright smile on their faces.

2 Upcoming Events Not the Sunday Lunch Every Sunday in Lent! Everyone is invited to the Priory Buildings for an 11.45am start with lunch available until 1pm. There is no charge but we make a collection for Christian Aid, targeted this year towards Bangladesh and its river-flooding needs. Screen@6: Starts Saturday 6pm Screen@6 will be running every Saturday at 6pm throughout Lent! Each week an episode of the Jimmy McGovern drama Broken will be shown followed by a discussion on the issues raised. The series focuses on Michael Kerrigan (Sean Bean), the priest of a Roman Catholic parish in a northern English city, who despite suffering from his own troubles stemming from a traumatic childhood, tries to guide his most vulnerable parishioners through the trials and tribulations of everyday life. Free to attend - everyone welcome. Lunchtime Live Michael Haynes & Robin Beaumont Duets at the Phelps Organ Robin studied music at the RCM but his early piano teachers included a cake icing cinema organist, an army musician and a French flower arranger! For examples of Robin s work Google "robin beaumont youtube", and see him playing organs from around the world! In addition to being Director of Music at Hexham Abbey Michael works as a freelance recitalist, accompanist, examiner, choral conductor, and teacher. Free concert - retiring collection. 3 HOST s Lent Appeal Lent is traditionally a time of foregoing something, though there is also now a trend to mark the season by doing something, something extra thoughtful and special. As we approach a time of joyful celebration in the Church calendar HOST ask if you might consider doing something for international relations making a small but significant contribution towards greater understanding worldwide. HOST s mission is to give a welcome to international students in British homes for friendship and cultural exchange. Volunteer hosts open their homes and offer the opportunity to their student guests to have a break from studies and the chance to discover a new part of the UK. They share meals and conversation and in so doing learn about each other s cultures. From the feedback the charity receive it is evident that being a host can give every bit as much pleasure as being a guest. Hospitality can be offered for one day (daytime only) or three days and two nights at the weekend. We operate all year round and would very much welcome more volunteer hosts to join in.
