Our services are all slightly different, but each offers a friendly space in which you can worship God and be part of God s community. St Andrew s at 8am: Holy Communion is a less formal worship service. St Luke s at 10am: Holy Eucharist has a more formal style of worship. The Eucharist is also celebrated at St Luke s on Thursdays at 8:30am. St Andrew s at 5pm: Sunday Night Live or 4:30pm: Messy Church (3rd Sunday of each month) is a space for families with children and the young at heart to join in informal and fun worship, discussion and activities. At our Sunday morning services you will need the middle pages of this booklet to join in the prayers and the Psalm that we read together. If you need a gluten-free wafer at Communion, please tell the person who welcomed you at the front door before the service. 2 From the Parish Rector's Reflection Dear friends, Today we celebrate the Feast of Holy Trinity. In getting to grips with it, many have spoken of the Trinity in terms of three-leafed clovers and ice, water, steam, in an attempt to illustrate what it's like and how it works. Helpful though these metaphors are, they remain just that. The Trinity will always have an element of mystery to it, it will always be unfathomable, lest it cease to be divine. Our weekly recitation of The Creed states our Trinitarian belief and is the measure of Christian orthodoxy the world over; whilst we subscribe to it, we mustn't allow it to limit our faith simply to a nice, neat formula. We cannot restrict God to the Nicene Creed any more than the Israelites, of old, could restrict God to the Jerusalem Temple's 'Holy of Holies' or the Mosaic Law. The Trinity poses a problem for many as it seems to contradict monotheism with its threefold expression of the divine. Our Abrahamic cousins (Jews and Muslims) think it blasphemous to speak of Jesus as God; whilst Muslims have a high regard for Jesus as a great prophet of Islam, he is not of the same substance as the Father (Allah). At times in history, our belief in Christ's divinity has sadly led to anti-semitism, and the Christian branding of Jews as 'the deicide people' or 'Christ-killers'. For the most part, thankfully, we've moved beyond such an attitude and most Christians are prepared to acknowledge that Jesus was in fact Jewish. Jewish he was, all be he at odds with the religious establishment of which he was a part and yet apart from. The 'unity in diversity' that Jesus sought, whilst counter to the Judaism of his day, was very much God's desire for a broken and divided humanity in this and every generation. May we be 'at-one' with the Godhead's at-oneness'. The Trinity invites us into communion with the Godhead's diverse unity. The great hymn by Edward Cooper (TiS 131) reminds us: Thrice holy - Father, Spirit, Son, mysterious Godhead, Three in One, before your throne we sinners bend; grace, pardon, life to us extend. Extend your life to us O Lord, this and every week, and grant us pardon and peace in Jesus' name. Amen. Fr Michael 2

5 Readings for this week Isaiah In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one called to another and said: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory. The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. And I said: Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts! Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out. Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? And I said, Here am I; send me! 6 6 Romans So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, Abba! Father! it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. The Gospel: John Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God. Jesus answered him, Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above. Nicodemus said to him, How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother s womb and be born? Jesus answered, Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be astonished that I said to you, You must be born from above. The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit. Nicodemus said to him, How can these things be? Jesus answered him, Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things? Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Samaritans 2018 Winter Appeal is endeavouring to make an impact to improve this confronting statistic and I ask you and your parish to join me in ur efforts. The reality is, there are children and families living in poverty within our Diocese. Every Winter, Samaritans sees an influx of people seeking assistance. This could be a single mother fleeing her violent husband, being left with nothing as she takes shelter in a refuge. It could be the family breadwinner losing a job as industry closes, leaving a choice of feeding the family or paying the bills. It could be grandparents on the pension raising their grandchildren because the parents suffer with mental illness. Please donate - there will be a retiring offertory today.
