Easter Sunday April 1, 2018 Unlike John s gospel rendition of Jesus risen from death to life which we heard at the Vigil last night, Mark s gospel which we hear today ends so abruptly, with astonishment and fear rather than joyful proclamation. Yet Mark may speak to our experience more directly than the other gospels. Corinthians and Acts fill out the story by telling of appearances of the risen Christ. Peter says we ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. And so do we, in a foretaste of the mountaintop feast where death will be no more. Gathering Music Gathering The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. Alleluia! Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia! Welcome 3

*Opening Hymn Because You Live, O Christ *Kyrie In peace, in peace Refrain: 4

For the reign of God and for peace throughout the world, for the unity of all Refrain For your people here who have come to give you praise, for the strength to live your Word Refrain *Hymn of Praise Now the Feast and Celebration #167 5

*Greeting Alleluia! Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia! The grace of our Savior Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. *Prayer of the Day Let us pray. Giver of new life, we come before you in Easter joy, seeking to be a people of the resurrection. Be known among us; grant us the assurance of your presence, your love, and your renewing power. Through your Word and Spirit, reveal to us your purpose in our lives. All this we pray in the name of the Risen One, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Ring bells whenever you hear, Alleluia! 6

Word God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song. - Quiet reflection First Reading Isaiah 25:6-9 On this mountain YAHWEH Omnipotent will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear. And God will destroy on this mountain the shroud that is cast over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over all nations; God will swallow up death forever. Then YAHWEH Omnipotent will wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of the chosen people God will take away from all the earth, for God has spoken. It will be said on that day, Lo, this is our God for whom we have waited, so that God might save us. This is YAHWEH for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in the salvation of our God. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Psalm 118: 1-2, This is the day that the Lord has made! Let us rejoice and be glad in it! 7

Second Reading Acts 10:34-43 Peter began to speak to the people: I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who is God-fearing and does what is right is acceptable to God. You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ who is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how Jesus went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. Jesus commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. 8

*Gospel Acclamation The holy gospel according to Mark, the 16 th chapter. Glory to you, O God. *Gospel Reading Mark 16:1-8 Spark Story Bible pages When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint Jesus. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. They had been saying to one another, Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb? When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back. As they entered the tomb, they saw a youth, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. But the youth said to them, Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you. So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. 9

This is the Good News. Praise to you, O Christ. Children s Sermon After the children s sermon, children may go with their teacher to children s church. Or, families may decide to keep children in worship. We love all ages in worship and leave it to the families to decide. Sermon *Hymn of the Day Now the Green Blade Rises #379 *Prayers of the People (Each petition will conclude with, Hear us, O God and the congregation responds, Your mercy is great. ) Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. *Peace Meal God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ. (The people greet each other: Peace be with you. ) The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. 12 *The Great Thanksgiving It is our duty and delight we praise your name and join their unending hymn: *Sanctus 12

*Eucharistic Proclamation and Prayer *Lord s Prayer Joining with the people of God throughout the ages, let us pray with confidence.
