1 March 31, 2013 St. Juan Diego Parish Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon The single most important feast on the Christian calendar. More important than Pentecost, than Christmas, than Ascension Thursday, than any Marian or Saint's feast. Without Easter the others make no sense. Easter completes Jesus' mission and validates his life, his teaching and his Passion. Easter is not only about Jesus. It is about us as individuals, as a Church, as a cosmos. St. Paul tells us that what was done for Jesus will be done for all of creation....because creation itself also will be delivered from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that all creation groans and travails in pain until now (Romans: 8, 21-22). Easter is God's promise to us that existence is not purposeless, not random aimlessness, not sound and fury signifying nothing. Easter is not Easter! Easter Sunday only Jesus' vindication but a promise to us that what happened for him will also happen for us. What the new creation in Christ will be like is a matter of speculation but ultimately unknowable until it happens. We get some hints in the Easter narratives but, basically, the most we can say with certainty is that death will not have the last word; our sorrows, fears and pains (and those of all creation) will be redeemed in the crucible of God's creative and saving love. A former Archbishop of Portland, Edward D. Howard, said one time, We Christians are an Alleluia people. Easter, and no other, is the reason why. Live in Easter all year long. ALLELUIA! Fr. Ted Frison Parish Priest Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ, save me. Blood of Christ, embolden me. Water from the side of Christ, wash me. Passion of Christ, strengthen me. O good Jesus, hear me. Within your wounds hide me. Let me never be separated from you. From the evil enemy defend me. At the hour of my death call me and bid me come to you, that with our saints I may praise you Forever and ever. Amen. Prayer Intentions For those who are ill: Kristi Claeys, daughter of Don & Ardith Claeys Michael Hoyt, father of Jennifer Jamieson Theresa Vu, niece of Van Funk Brian Rooney, nephew of Chris Goodman Visitations to the Sick and Homebound Please call the parish office, (503) if you know of someone who needs Communion taken to them at home or in the hospital. Our Mission We are St. Juan Diego Catholic Church, a welcoming community empowered by the Holy Spirit, who worship, serve and evangelize as we gather a vibrant, diverse, multicultural People of God dedicated to proclaiming the Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Bernhard Lichtenberg - priest and martyr "Bernhard [] encourage[s] us to remain on the way that is Christ. We must not grow weary, even when many times this way seems dark and demands sacrifice. Let us beware of false prophets who want to show us other ways. Christ is the way which leads to life. All other ways are detours or wrong paths. Bernhard Lichtenberg knew quite well that wherever God's truth is no longer heeded, human dignity also suffers. Wherever falsehood reigns, false and evil behaviour also rules. "A person's actions are the consequences of his principles. When his principles are false, his actions will not be correct... I fight against false principles, which necessarily give rise to false actions", he wrote in the minutes of his first appearance before the Nazi judges. And he clearly and emphatically called some of these false principles by name: "The elimination of religious instruction in the schools; struggle against the Cross; the secularization of marriage, deliberate killing of those whose lives were supposedly not worth living (euthanasia), persecution of the Jews... " From Bl. Pope John Paul II's homily at the Beatification of Bernhard Lichtenberg and Karl Leisner, June, at Berlin's Olympic Stadium ( Adoration: April 5 from 7-10 PM You are invited to spend some time in prayer before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Couldn t you stay awake even just one hour with me? Stay awake and pray so that you don t give in to temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak (Mt 26:40-41). SOCIAL JUSTICE The Risen Christ signals the paths of hope along which we can advance together towards a world more just and mutually supportive, in which the blind egoism of the few will not prevail over the cries of pain of the many, reducing entire peoples to conditions of degrading misery. May the message of life proclaimed by the angel near the stone rolled back from the tomb overturn the hardness of our hearts; may it lead to removing unjustified barriers and promote a fruitful exchange between peoples and cultures. May the image of the new human being, shining on the face of Christ, cause everyone to acknowledge the inalienable value of human life; may it encourage effective responses to the increasingly felt demand for justice and equal opportunity in all areas of society; may it impel individuals and states to full respect for the essential and authentic rights rooted in the very nature of the human person. Pope John Paul II, Urbi et Orbi Message, Easter, April 23, 2000 Thank you for your generous support of our Parish Mar 23/ People Collection Basket.. $ 3, Electronically or by mail.. $

Tuohey, PhD - Endowed Chair, Applied Health Care Ethics Director, Providence Center for Health Care Ethics Peter Mahr, MD Clinical Assistant Professor OHSU, President of Physicians for a National Health Program, Portland Chapter Christine Rontal, MSW - Executive Director Virginia Garcia Memorial Foundation John Kingery - St. Juan Diego Social Justice, Co-founder of Catholics, Healthcare for All, Director of Justice At The Table Moderator Deacon Dennis Desmarais Refreshments will be served. Additional Information: John Kingery at admjatt@justiceatthetable.com Catholic Year of Faith It is the desire of this Council that the liturgy of the Lenten and Easter seasons be restored in such a way as to dispose the hearts of the catechumens to celebrate the paschal mystery at whose solemn ceremonies they are reborn in Christ through baptism. But this Christian initiation through the catechumenate should be taken care of not only by catechists or priests but by the entire community of the faithful, especially by the sponsors. Thus, right from the outset the catechumens will feel that they belong to the People of God.
