3 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time From Bishop Conlon Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ: Once again, we are faced with a season of terrible devastation wrought by storms around our country. Specifically, Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Michael are two major storms so far this year which have caused millions of dollars worth of damage to those living in the southeastern states. Many have lost homes, businesses or places of worship as a result of the storm winds, debris, torrential rain and catastrophic flooding. We offer our prayers to families who have lost loved ones or are among those injured. As so often occurs, the poorest communities are hit hardest by these conditions, and will have the least recourse to address their losses. As a result, the bishops of the United States have agreed to take up a special collection for the humanitarian, long-term recovery and Church needs arising from the storms and other natural disasters in In the Diocese of Joliet, I am asking for parishes to hold this special collection during the weekend of November 4, if possible, but no later than November 11, so as not to conflict with the collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development on November 17-18, Please be as generous as you are able to assist our brothers and sisters in need. Bishop R. Daniel Conlon, Diocese of Joliet Page 3 Domestic Violence Awareness Month Besides making sure our voice is heard by local and state representatives and supporting legislation that will help to eliminate domestic violence, there are many other ways our Catholic faith community can help to put an end to domestic violence. Some of these ways include: Volunteering at your local women's shelter or crisis center. Donating clothes, food or household goods to a shelter and/or a monetary donation to an organization working to end domestic violence. Becoming a mentor for our youth. Participating in fundraisers that support domestic violence awareness organizations. Encouraging your employer to donate to a domestic violence shelter and learning about your company s policy on matching your donations. Attending events hosted by your local domestic violence organization. Together, our Catholic faith community can make a difference and help to end the cycle of domestic violence! From: 26 Ways to Get Involved in Stopping Domestic Violence By Brian Nguyen All Souls Day November 2, 2018, 7:00 pm During the month of November, we will remember our departed family members and friends. Using either the All Souls envelope included in your regular envelope mailing, or one of the envelopes provided in the Narthex, you may write the names of the people you especially wish to have remembered. These names will be included on a Our Beloved Dead poster during the month of November (updated weekly), and then in the parish bulletin. The names of those buried from Christ the Servant this past year will be read during the All Souls liturgy. All will have the opportunity to light a candle in memory of deceased loved ones at the end of the mass. All are invited to bring a photo of your deceased loved one to place on a table near the altar during the All Souls Mass. RITES OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION Adults interested in learning more Sacramental Information about the Catholic Faith, the celebration of Baptism, Eucharist and/or Confirmation are invited to contact the parish office. MARRIAGE Marriage arrangements must be made at least six months in advance by contacting the Parish Office to set the date and reserve the church. 5 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 5 CHRIST THE SERVANT ANNUAL FINANCIAL REPORT Fiscal Year July 1, 2017 June 30, 2018 The next page is our parish annual financial statement for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2018; along with a comparison to the prior fiscal year. I sincerely want to personally thank all of you who financially support Christ the Servant. Your faith, generosity and support mean so much. Because of you, we are able to continue the work and mission of the Catholic Church in our surrounding community. It is a blessing for me to be the pastor of such a friendly and generous parish. The parish generated a small deficit of approximately $2,500 for the current fiscal year as opposed to a small surplus last year. While Sunday collections were flat, fundraising revenues were down $13,000 due to less fundraising activity this year. Timing of when the 13 th month envelope was distributed resulted in restricted revenues also being lower this year. Fortunately overall operating expenses were flat this year as we watched our spending very carefully. In addition, the parish debt service payments were also lower by $20,000. Due to stronger cash flows in 2017, additional principal payments were made which did not occur this year. I am pleased to share with you that the parish loan which was used to build the Church was paid off in The original loan balance was around $2 million and we were able to pay this obligation off along with interest in 18 years. The use of the monthly debt reduction envelope helped us meet this obligation. Please continue using the debt reduction envelope so we can pay off the loan for the new parking lot and rectory project as soon as possible. On the ministry side, we provided religious education to 141 children this past year. We also continue to support a number of important programs such as the West Suburban Food Pantry and St. Vincent de Paul Society which help the poor and needy in our community. One thing this financial report does not reflect is the literally hundreds of volunteer hours given in service to the parish which I appreciate very much. It is your commitment to the parish that makes possible the ministries and programs that we offer. Without your giving of time and talent the parish could not accomplish all the good work it currently does. We have finally begun our construction projects of expanding the parish parking (including a circle driveway) and building a rectory on the parish property. I am very pleased that construction has finally begun. I want to thank the building committee for their dedication and working through the many obstacles we encountered. The parking lot should be completed by early November and the rectory in March of next year. I am looking forward to living nearer the church building. I am very proud of our parish and I hope you are pleased with all we accomplished this past year. We are always working to make sound financial decisions so Christ the Servant parish will be as blessed in the future as she is today. Please know that you are always in my prayers. May God bless you and your family. Fr. Bob

The Beautiful Hands of a Priest We need them in life s early morning, We need them again at its close; We feel their warm clasp of true friendship, We seek them when tasting life s woes. When we come to this world we are sinful, The greatest as well as the least; And the hand that makes us pure as angels is the beautiful hand of a priest. At the altar each day we behold them; And the hands of a king on his throne Are not equal to them in their greatness! Their dignity stands all alone. For there in the stillness of morning Ere the sun has emerged from the east, There God rests between the pure fingers Of the beautiful hands of a priest. And when we are tempted to wander To paths of shame and of sin, Tis the hand of a priest will absolve us, Not once, but again and again! And when we are taking life s partner, Other hands may prepare us a feast; But the hand that will bless and unite us Is the beautiful hand of a priest. God bless them and keep them all holy For the host which their fingers caress; What can a poor sinner do better Than to ask Him Who chose thee to bless? When death on our eyelids is falling; May our courage and strength be increased By seeing raised o er us in blessing The beautiful hands of a priest. On All Souls Day, we pray for all family members and friends who have died. In Latin America, El Dia de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead, is not gloomy or sad. It is a colorful, lively celebration of our belief that in death, life is changed but not ended.
