1 Christ the Servant Catholic Church Serving God from your Heart Our Mission Christ the Servant Parish is a welcoming Catholic faith community gathered together to gratefully share and live the Eucharist, the inspiration of the Gospel, the presence of the Holy Spirit, and to follow Christ's example in service of others.

2 Page 2 January 20, 2019 Living Stewardship Now Pope Francis Tweet for the Week The first step in prayer is to be humble, go to the Father and say: Look at me, I am a sinner. And the Lord listens. He became what we are that He might make us what He is. - Saint Athanasius Jan. 22nd -- Day of Prayer for Legal Protection of Unborn Children will be observed throughout all dioceses of the USA through prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life and of penance for the violations to the dignity of the human person committed through abortions. At masses this weekend, we join with other churches throughout the country in the celebration of God s gift of Life by observing the Sanctity of Life in prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children. Through the grace of Jesus and the prayers of the faithful, may we soon celebrate the day when every child is welcomed in life and protected by law. Bishop J. Peter Sartain, former Bishop of Joliet. Tuesday, January 22, marks the 46th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Over 6 million babies, created by God, have been eliminated by abortion over these past 46 years. We pray that our government officials have the knowledge, wisdom and courage to establish and promote laws which protect the dignity of human life from conception until natural death. The Lord is the judge of the nations. Psalm 7:9. Copyright 2011, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. From Bishop Conlon Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Please participate in the national Collection for the Church in Latin America. Last year, when Pope Francis opened registrations for World Youth Day in Panama, he said, WYD is for the courageous! Not for young people who are searching only for comfort and who withdraw whenever difficulties arise. Do you accept the challenge? You have helped young people accept the challenge to grow in faith by your ongoing support for the Collection for the Church in Latin America. Your generosity is helping the young people of the Archdiocese of Panama build relationships with one another, with their peers throughout Latin America, and with the rest of the world as they prepare for World Youth Day This is a tremendous event in the life of the Church, and these young people are now experiencing it to the fullest! You have given them the opportunity to grow as leaders and to develop missionary hearts. Please be generous in this collection. Take this opportunity to share your faith with young people in Latin America and the Caribbean. Your support will truly make a difference. Thank you and God bless you. Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon Bishop of Joliet REDISCOVER CATHOLICISM As Catholics we are often disillusioned, questioning our faith, and filled with doubts about the Relevance of our Catholic faith. Dynamic Catholic has sent representative Andie Wolfe 17 copies of the unabridged book REDISCOVER CATHOLICISM, read by the author, Matthew Kelly. Wherein, Kelly reveals the truth and awesomeness of Catholicism. He addresses the richness of Catholic spirituality and some of the most important questions we face today both as individuals and as a church. A free copy of the audio book Rediscover Catholicism is available in the narthex. Find us (and like us!) on Facebook. Type Christ the Servant Catholic Church into the search bar.

3 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time WEEKLY REFLECTION: FAIR TRADE A RESPONSE TO HUMAN TRAFFICKING "A just trading system - in addition to breaking down barriers to promote growth - should enhance the life and dignity of everyone, lessen economic injustice, and help eradicate poverty." (US Bishops) Fair trade is an approach to business/development that seeks to create greater equity in the international trading system. It supports farmers and craftspeople in developing countries who are socially and economically marginalized. Why shop Fair Trade? Many products that we use regularly (coffee, rice, chocolate, flowers, clothing, and consumer electronics) are produced by impoverished individuals (especially women and children) who are victims of forced labor and human trafficking. Products fair trade certified have been researched by independent, third party investigators to ensure that workers manufacturing them receive fair wages, conditions and rights. Action: Contribute to this global movement for change by simply choosing to buy fair trade tea, coffee, chocolate and other products when you shop. Review the web site Fairtradeamerica.org. View your state s list of Fair Trade stores, and encourage local businesses to go fair trade. Invite a fair-trade speaker to meetings or events. Fundraise for organizations which help hardworking producers work their way out of poverty. Prayer: Loving God, speak to our hearts and minds. Show us the way to free the captives, provide dignity for all and save our earthly home. Provide us with the wisdom to care for each other as You care for all of us. Welcome to our parish family: Page 3 Ramon & Myrna V Barclay Dr, Bolingbrook If you have not yet registered, we welcome you too! The Joliet Diocese and Immigrant Solidarity DuPage are partnering to provide goods needed by asylum seekers at the U.S. Mexico border. Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley-Humanitarian Respite Center is receiving hundreds of people a day who were recently released from ICE. Because of the high volume of arrivals they are in desperate need of donations of basic hygiene products, first aid supplies, new socks and undergarments, and shoelaces (for some reason ICE takes their shoelaces when they are detained). Here is a list of items needed: Shampoo, conditioner Soap Toothbrushes and toothpaste Lotion Deodorant Pads and tampons Diapers, wipes Baby powder Bandaids and bandages Ointments Alcohol wipes Gauze and medical tape New socks (all sizes) New underwear (all sizes) Shoelaces The Diocese is asking all parishes to collect items for the respite center until the end of January. There is a large box in the Narthex to deposit the items. Arrangements will then be made to get the collected items to Immigrant Solidarity DuPage who will transport them to the Respite Center at the border. Thank you for helping with this project.

Introduced by Rep. Chris Smith, the law authorizes $430 million to be spent over the next 4 years to help combat sex and labor trafficking both in the U.S. and abroad. This is Smith's 5th anti-trafficking bill to become law. "In the fight to end modern day slavery, my law honors the legacy of Frederick Douglass, a former slave who became a prominent abolitionist." The law provides resources for trafficking prevention education for children; shelter, therapies, and reintegration assistance for trafficking survivors; the facilitation of trafficking-free supply chains in the U.S.; training of government and airline industry employees to identify trafficking cases; and oversight to ensure that government purchases are not employing traffickers. The bulk of allocations will go to the State Department to fund their educational and diplomatic efforts. The new legislation provides funding to the International Megan's Law, establishing country-to-country notification about convicted pedophiles. ---from Catholic News Agency (CNA) submitted by Dave A Sacramental Information RITES OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION Adults interested in learning more about the Catholic Faith, the celebration of Baptism, Eucharist and/or Confirmation are invited to contact the parish office.
