It is a cycle that all f us will endure. At the end f April, and int May, this happened t my cusin and smene very clse t me. In bth cases, bth suffered fr a lng time befre passing. Bth had strng family supprt and many clse friends t share their memries. During this same time, 2 ther Japanese Americans, strangers t me, died in Las Vegas. One died in a nursing hme and anther alne in his hme. I was invlved with bth, either setting up a Buddhist service r help cleaning the deceased huse (my friend s family member). I find the secnd prtin sadder than the first, because n ne shuld die r be sick alne. Mst peple are cmpassinate and caring, irrespective f race r religin. We need t seek ut these peple. By being there fr thers, the better yu will understand yurself. Stp the What s in it fr me? sciety f tday and pen yur mind. Ht tea and bttled water served alng with the mnthly "gdies". Cmmunicating an Emtinal Truth By Rev. Jn Turner I wanted t thank yu all fr inviting me t the Las Vegas Buddhist Sangha. It is very meaningful when we can walk the path tgether. LVBS als seems very eager t learn and listen t the Dharma. There is a sense f urgency and eagerness at yur services. The rain and pancakes were als bth a very special treat. I rarely see either in Orange Cunty. It is ften t sunny fr rain and I am usually t busy fr pancakes. When I give Dharma talks I usually fcus n cntext rather than cntent. I try t give peple the tls necessary t interpret the teachings fr themselves rather than explain their generally accepted meaning. Perhaps I am teaching peple t fish rather than giving them a fish. These skills are necessary when the teachings are s vast and varied. I culdn t pssibly cver them even all in ne lifetime. By sme estimates, the Mahayana sutras cnsist f sme 500,000 pages. This is bth a plus and a minus. It is very beneficial that we have s many different teachings that can resnate with s many different peple but it can als be very verwhelming and smetimes incnsistent. This prblem is intensified when issues f language are als cnsidered. Imagine the Buddhist mnks f China trying t translate all this text frm Sanskrit int Chinese. These are tw very different languages. The frmer is rather exacting and frmal while the latter much mre free and petic. The scale f this prject is enrmus. One apprach taken by bth the Chinese and the Japanese was t try t reduce the size f the prblem by finding ways t categrize the Buddha s teachings. In cmputer science, we call this divide and cnquer. Rather than slving the entire prblem all at nce, we instead try t slve many smaller prblems. In this case, Buddhists tried t find a way f categrizing the teachings int smaller grups. Then these grups culd be priritized and studied smewhat independently. One such methd was t simply divide the teachings in tw. One grup f teachings wuld be categrized as exteric and the ther as esteric. Exteric refers t teachings that are relatively straight frward and mre cmmn sense riented. Fr example, Selected Saying #3 in ur service bk frm the Dhammapada is ne f these teachings: Happiness fllws srrw, srrw fllw happiness, but when ne n lnger discriminates between happiness and srrw, a gd deed and a bad deed, ne is able t realize freedm. page 2

6 ADULT DHARMA CLASS TOPIC fr June Shin Buddhism: The Path twards Peace f Mind Shin Buddhism, Jd Shinshu, is a spiritual path and persnal jurney twards being at peace with neself and the wrld. In its mst basic frm it des nt require blind faith r bedience t a creed r persn. But it prpses cmpnents f a wrld view and life tls that will help in ne s jurney. The wrd prpses is used because if ne des nt find them cmpatible with ne s wn perceptins and sensibilities then Shin Buddhism may nt be fr yu. Imprtant cmpnents f the wrld view are: There is smething greater than us that embdies uncnditinal lve, perfect wisdm and cmpassin. It des nt judge, r demand bedience and wrship. In great cmpassin it understands us and therefre lves and supprts uncnditinally us n the path twards peace f mind. Nthing f this wrld is permanent. All things will change in time in small t large ways. Fr every actin there is a reactin and it ripples thrughut the wrld. (last clause is related t the next cmpnent) Everything is interdependent. We are respnsible fr ur wn lives. We have bth ptential and limitatins. Discmfrts and sufferings and lack f peace f mind are caused by neself (in three basic ways stated belw) and there is a way f wrking with them. 1. Attachment (greed, desire ) 2. Aversin (dislike, anger ) 3. Ignrance (unaware, uninfrmed, lack f infrmatin ). Sme f the life tls are: Practical and spiritual empiricism, i.e. critical thinking and testing. Practicing gd emtinal and thinking habits: Gratitude Self-awareness Empathy Openness Mindfulness Meditatin The prcess f accepting the self and wrld as-it-is and being empwered by this acceptance. The Eightfld Path in the cntext f afrementined wrld view and life tls. Each cmpnent and life tl has its wn further explanatin and elabratin. 7 Meditatin Crner I want t thank all thse wh have shwn an interest in ur new meditatin grup which meets the secnd Tuesday night f each mnth at 7 pm. Our secnd meditatin grup was small but still successful. I think we are building a grup f dedicated and enthusiastic students wh want t learn abut meditatin. The classes were started based n the mindfulness meditatin classes held at Orange Cunty Buddhist Church (OCBC). This means that we are using mindfulness meditatin as ur cre fcus but, I want the class t be dynamic and infrmative. Our first class explred bth sitting and walking mindfulness meditatin. There were many questins abut the varius ther types f meditatin ut there in the cmmunity s, I decided t explre ther techniques each meeting fr cmparisn with mindfulness techniques. This past meeting, the grup tried meditatin using Ambient Music fr Airprts by Brian En. This music is relaxing but des nt cntain any familiar meldies r rhythms t distract yur mind. It was helpful fr sme f the grup t relax mre and did nt distract frm achieving a mindfulness state. The secnd meditatin fr cmparisn was dne using Deep Alpha by Steven Halpern. While this music was very relaxing and did nt distract away frm mindfulness, many f the grup felt that they didn t have as much freedm with their minds while trying t achieve mindfulness. These albums can be rdered n CD r dwnladed frm Amazn r itunes. While mindfulness is cnsidered t be the mst effective frm f meditatin, there are many different types f meditatin that have specific uses. Fr ur next grup, we will explre sme types f meditatin that fcus mre n physical senses t prduce frms f relaxatin and meditatin. One f the gals f this grup is t learn numerus meditatin techniques s that yu can utilize the best methd t achieve certain results such as relaxatin, pain relief, sleep, etc. Yu are welcme t bring a cushin r mat if yu want. Wearing cmfrtable clthes is a gd idea but there is n specific dress cde. Yu may change here r kick yur shes ff if yu want t be cmfrtable. There are many vivid examples f these encunters that we can access and which, in turn, serve t bring the wisdm f the teachings t life fr us. Hwever, is there als a significance t the sheer breadth f this histry, smething that might enable us t discver the deeper meaning in ur lives tday? Beginning with the encunters f the Buddha himself, what is the cnnectin between the ancient stries f his path t awakening fr example, his encunter with impermanence in the Stry f the Fur Gates and mdern encunters with the Dharma, mdern stries f persnal transfrmatin? Musician David Bwie nce said, I have always fllwed the tenets f Buddhism, especially the ne abut change. What came frm my Buddhist bumblings is that change is ur river. I keep cming back t that, and it means an awful lt t me. And the gifted pet Jane Hirshfield, nce cmmented that because we find impermanence difficult, we tend t filter ur experience, srt it int likes and dislikes, things we want t repeat and things we want t avid. But the task, she says, is nt t discriminate, but simply t see what is fr precisely what it is. These and a wide variety f ther cnnectins shuld lead t stimulating discussin and Q & A.
