Fraud and identity theft is considered to be one of the fastest growing crimes in the country. Identity theft alone affects approximately nine to ten million Americans each year. Detective Clay Lins, Sauk County Sheriff s Department, will present areas to help you protect your identity and money from frauds. Council News June 2016 Greetings, There are a lot of things to do and think about with this busy season. Remember to share your time and gifts with others here at St. Peter s. 6 Bugle Call June 2016 Sisters and Brothers in Christ: Grace and Peace to you from God the Father; From our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; In, with, and through the Holy Spirit. AMEN! I ve been musing. Usually I find that s OK, but sometimes it leads one down the proverbial rabbit hole. Perhaps you too find that this musing stuff is a bit burdensome, or, maybe not. Regardless, I want to pose this essay starter: What is it that scares you? And when I use the word you I am also including myself in this question. So, what is it that scares you, and me? Some people are scared by circus clowns (think John Wayne Gacy). Others may be scared by the Beatles song Helter Skelter (think Charles Manson and his followers). Still others may be scared by words, or language. I ve been musing on the word, verisimilitude, and you may wonder why. The answer is, I cannot say. Not because I m protecting the reason like some fabled and singular trout stream (think Stream X), but because I really cannot say. It just popped into my head as I was contemplating a topic for this month s Bugle Call article. Along with musing, I also ponder. And when I think of the word verisimilitude I ponder why, although it doesn t scare me, why I find this word vexatious. It really is a troublesome word. I think that any 6-syllable word (ver-isi-mil-i-tude) that takes six syllables to get its point across IS a troubling cobbling-together of too many letters, let alone syllables. Enough already with the syllabification!! (Winston Persaud, a dear man and one of my Seminary professors, would have called me cheeky for writing what I ve just written) But now, returning to trying to make a point, words do scare me, some words that is. Words that are spoken in anger scare me. Words that are spoken carelessly and that unintentionally hurt someone else really scare me. And some words that should never have been thought of, the kind of words that belittle an entire class of people, or debase an entire race, really, really scare me. And some words, words that are difficult to come to grips with, or words that are nebulous, or words with confounding implications, terrify me. When I hear some words, especially the kind like that last type of word, I am left a quivering mass of human jelly. Take the word intolerant (or not, but the rest of this article deals with that word) for instance. On the face of it, it seems like a benign enough word. Its meaning seems clear: in, meaning against, and tolerant meaning, well, tolerant. And it meets our standard for a good word, in that it is not 6 syllables long, only four. But when it is used in a certain sense, that word can cause conniptions. Let s muse, no, let s ponder the following phrase: The only thing I can t tolerate is intolerance. (a real headscratcher, isn t it?) That phrase reminds me of the old Alanis Morissette song Isn t it ironic (Old? That song was released in 1995, and it s old??) How does that phrase strike you? How does it make you feel? Does it seem like utter nonsense, or is there a thread of personal verisimilitude that erupts? (There s that word again.) In the New Testament, a form of the word intolerance exists only as tolerable, and contains references to the judgement of Tyre, Sodom, and Sidon. (See Mt 10:15, 11:22, 11:24, Luke 10:12, and 10:14) And if one reads the foregoing texts, it is clear that the judgement at hand is God s judgement, and not that of humankind. How does being a Christian, how does being a Christ-follower, affect our understanding of the word intolerance? What events, what conditions, and what characteristics do we tend to tolerate, and in what events, conditions, and characteristics do we lack tolerance, or are we indeed intolerant? In those cases affecting tolerance, what is the Christian perspective? How are we to react to what we believe are commandments given to us by God? Are we to compromise what we believe are our core beliefs, those things that we consider to be our non-negotiables, for the sake of being considered tolerant? And perhaps more importantly, do we, ourselves, have within us the divine knowledge of the parameters in which God would want us to be tolerant, or even intolerant? Is it possible for humankind to know, with supreme definity, whether God would have us act, toward our fellow human creatures, with tolerance or intolerance? In the 22 nd chapter of the Gospel according to Matthew, Jesus was asked by a Pharisee, Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest? Jesus responded by saying, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself I believe those are words that we can tolerate. God s Peace to all of you Pr Don P.S. In your free time, you may want to ponder whether we, as Christians, are to be tolerant or intolerant of those who do not believe in the commandments Jesus named. (Just a thought)

7 Spiritual Reflection for June 2016 Who Am I? Go ahead ask yourself the question being asked in the title of this reflection. Perhaps you know the answer to this question. Perhaps you think you know the answer. I want to challenge you to stop and consider who you are at the core of your being. Let s explore this topic further. If you were to write your own introduction for someone to read to an audience, what would you put down on paper? What would you want people to know? Perhaps you can recall meeting a stranger and the words you used to introduce yourself to them and the words they used to introduce themselves to you. Stop reading for a moment and think about the words you would put on paper to describe yourself to others. You might go the step further and jot a few things down before you read on. From my experiences using this little exercise, I imagine you considered where you live, what kind of work you do, your membership to various clubs and service groups in your community. Perhaps you provided information about where you obtained your education. You likely included whether you are married or not, have children or not. You may have mentioned your extended family, how many brothers and sisters you have. There are many ways to answer the question, who am I and these are the typical answers. While on retreat at the Jesuit House in Oshkosh, WI, one summer, I felt a deep calling to explore this question for myself. Who am I, I asked looking toward the heavens. I was feeling a bit overwhelmed by the list of things I was doing and held an overall discontentedness in the constant rush from one thing to another. Was I doing what I was supposed to be doing? Was I where I was supposed to be in life? An artist I am not, but I felt called to draw a picture of myself and decorate myself with all the roles, obligations, titles, and commitments that defined me so I could see the answer. I drew and doodled and added and paused, added and paused. When I finished it was hard to see me. Ah ha, that was it! God was asking me to see that all that I do is not really who I am. It is simply what I do. I needed to identify the layers that needed to be removed before I would be able to discover the answer to the question, who I am? I used this exercise at a conference recently. It is a great way to introduce the reality that who we are is more than what we do. Participants were invited to gently peel away the layers of roles, obligations, titles, and commitments. They were encouraged to work slowly and visit all of their vulnerabilities, which we often suppress or cover up with our roles, obligations, titles, and commitments. You see if we take on enough stuff we don t have to deal with our imperfections. The problem is we also risk smothering who we really are. We need not be afraid of our imperfections. We are human. We can grow through acknowledging that we are not perfect. We are likely to find at the core of our being a deep desire to grow, a deep yearning for love and belonging, a deep commitment to a higher power, to God. We can embrace our life journey and empathize with the journey of others, only after we have honestly answered the question, who am I? Questions to ponder: Who do people say I am? What are my imperfections? How can I become more comfortable with my own vulnerabilities? How will knowing myself help me interact with others? 9 Experience is the hardest kind of teacher; it gives you the test first and the lesson afterwards. You cannot do a kindness to soon because you never know how soon it will be too late. Swallowing angry words is much better than having to eat them When opportunity knocks, don t get caught complaining about the noise. A lie has speed but the truth has endurance. The real measure of your worth is what you would be worth if you lost all your money. If the going gets too easy, you may be going downhill. Good examples have twice the value of good advice The best way to judge someone is to observe how he treats people who can do him absolutely no good.
