2 Bugle CALL February 2019 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ!! Grace and Peace to you from God the Father; From our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; In, with, and through the Holy Spirit. Amen! How far into the future do you make plans? How far out do you pencil-in a potential meeting, visit, luncheon, or vacation? How much do you look forward to those same events that you have planned sometime later-on? What steps do you take to make those plans come true, or become a viable opportunity? Here are some answers. We are planning a study of Human Trafficking and the impact it has on its victims which will begin (as this musing is written) in two days. By the time you read this article, we will have already met a few times. Also, I have planned a Lenten Spiritual Practice book study which will begin on February 26 (in which all of you will have ample time to decide whether to participate, and to obtain the necessary materials). And we are trying to make happen a trip to Israel (Christian Holy sites) and Germany (for the Passion Play) in June, Not only that, Betty and I have been looking for a piece of land and a home to one day (not for a few years) to and upon which to retire. So those are some good plans; some for Spiritual enrichment, some for travel to view places and things related and inherent to our religious tradition, and one for purely personal reasons. Are those enough? The answer to that question all of you already know: NO! They are certainly not enough. We are all familiar with the phrase: Everybody wants to go to Heaven, but nobody wants to go today! OK, sounds reasonable, perhaps (depending upon one s situation here in this Earthly life). But is Heaven and our anticipated (and hoped and prayed for) attendance and participation therein something for which we PLAN? And if we do plan for that, what active steps are we taking to do what we can (and to not lift up your hopes, there really is nothing that we can DO to assure our salvation) to make those PLANs come true? Ok, now my head really hurts We, as Christians, have been promised by God, through Jesus Christ, in the power of the Holy Spirit, that belief in God (the Triune God) through God s Grace, is how we receive (and not deserve, merit, or earn) God s promise of life eternal. So how do we plan for that Great Gift and Promise? And to speak the truth, none of us really KNOW; we may presume, and we may assume, but none of us really KNOW. But perhaps here are some criteria we can establish in this life that have been given to us by God, in order to prepare, or PLAN for God s promises. What is important in our lives? What takes priority in our thoughts? What are the events that are before us that we really, really intend to participate in? What takes the place of our worshipping God? What takes the place of first priority in our lives? Is it loving God with our whole heart, our whole soul, all of our strength, and all of our mind; and loving our neighbor as ourselves? If there are things that stand in the way of putting God first, then perhaps we don t need to really and truly do them. And now my head really, really hurts. Life Eternal with God is our great gift as Christ-followers. And it will happen both already, and not yet. So what plans shall we make for our future? And what future do we aspire to and plan for? Blessings to all of you this upcoming year. And may all of your futures be filled with the Peace that Passes all Understanding, Jesus Christ Pastor Don <><

Bold Women s Day observed annually on the fourth Sunday of February, celebrates all Lutheran women who have acted or are acting boldly on their faith in Jesus Christ. It is important to realize that women are bold in different ways. Some women are bold in their unceasing prayers. Other women are bold in their service to those in need. Still other women are bold in their advocacy or through their hospitality. Whether we live out our bold story of faith in the workplace, family home or community, our faith compels us to make a difference in the lives of others. It s all about living out our baptismal call, about being a disciple of Christ. WELCA Program Book for 2019 should be available for pick up in the Narthex on February 10th. Prayer Shawl Ministry meets every Monday evening at 7:00pm. Quilting Ministry meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm and the fourth Tuesday from 6:00-8:00 pm. Everyone is invited anytime you are available from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Bible Studies are available on the second Wednesday morning at 9:00 am and on the third Monday night at 7:00 pm. The Gather magazine is the source of our studies. The winter session for the gather Bible study is broken into three sessions. In January we meet John the Baptist, who bears witness to Jesus. As the circle of Jesus' disciples grow, we share in the invitation to "come and see." At the wedding in Cana and during the cleansing of the temple, we reflect on how the character of God is revealed in Jesus. Extra copies are available on the desk by the coat rack. More Opportunities.. Looking for old T-shirts and polo shirts to make diapers for Baby Care Kits. They may have print, color, even light stains. 8 Spiritual Reflection for February 2019 Time Flies This month I am using a very personal topic for reflection. I hope some of you will appreciate it and I am sure some of you will have a hard time relating, but here goes. This month, I have arrived at a date I thought was far off in the future. February 2019 marks my 60 th year of life! Unbelievable! I remember being in a classroom as a teenager thinking that I would be so old if I lived to celebrate my 60 th birthday. Oh, how time flies. As a kid I heard my grandparents and elderly neighbors talk about how time flies and I would roll my eyes deciding that was not true because I was watching the clock and time seemed to be moving at a snail s pace. I would be bored silly some days. Today I would welcome a boring day, but as a kid I could hardly stand being bored (although it was never a good idea to mention being bored because there was always work to be done on the farm!). What happened to those days that seemed to be endless? Where did the long quiet lazy weekends go? It is funny how our perception of time changes over time. In trying to figure out why time flies by faster as I age, I have created a list of reasons that might make sense to you, too. 1. We discover new interests and now instead of one hobby like sewing, we have several hobbies like, sewing, music, hiking, biking, We develop new friendships. Beyond our friends from grade school we have friends from work, friends from our neighborhoods, friends from our new hobbies 3. Our family circle grows. We get married, and our siblings get married. We have children, nieces and nephews. Our children get married and grandchildren are added to the family circle. 4. We travel more. Families continue to spread out. What used to be a 15 minute ride to see grandchildren is now often more than an hour or 2 maybe even 8 to 15 hours. 5. We become more engaged in our communities by joining service groups, volunteering at church, and becoming involved in community fundraisers. 6. And you could add to this list The bottom line is we keep expanding our interests, but the number of hours in a day never changes. With all of the new found interests we run the risk of forgetting to take time to grow spiritually. I caution you to never lose focus of your spiritual health. There is a temptation to put aside one s spiritual practices in order to put one more thing on your list of things to do or places to see. Without your faith time will not only fly it will become a race you will lose. You will feel exhausted and defeated. Quiet times of reflection are critical for a healthy spirit. I have found them to be absolutely necessary in my life to keep me grounded in what really matters at the end of the day. No one runs out of time. We choose to prioritize our time. When we take time to nurture our spirituality we can sit back and truly enjoy the flight as time flies. Questions to ponder: What would I add as a reason for time flying? How do I prioritize my time? How do I nurture my spirituality? How am I using the time I have to share my God given gifts and talents? May God s Peace be With You, Tammy Koenecke, RN, BSN, MASL Spiritual Care Coordinator, RAMC
