3 KFC NEWS KfC is winding down for the year. This last rotation is the story about Hannah and her son Samuel. Hannah wants a son more than anything and prays to God. Hannah vows to give her son to the Lord. God answers her prayers and gives Hannah a son. Hannah keeps her vow and when Samuel is old enough she takes him to the Temple. Samuel becomes a great prophet and Hannah has more children. KFC learned there are many types of prayers and God hears our prayers and answers all our prayers. God may not answer as quick as we may want Him to, or we may not like His answer, but God does answer all our prayers. This rotation ends May 8 th, which is Mother s Day. KFC and the Confirmation class has a special Mother s Day program to present. All are invited to come. We will be serving muffins & beverages. Come see what we have done throughout the year and what we have planned for this fall. KFC has had many helpers and workshop leaders this past year. Your help and dedication to this program has been very much appreciated. Thanks Ruth Kruse for keeping track of our offerings and attendance. Sue Wobschall KFC Superintendent VBS August 8 th 12 th Come join the fun at Vacation Bible School at Barnyard Roundup. At Barnyard Roundup kids will look into the Bible, God s Holy Word, to discover Jesus is their BFF. In fact, Jesus is better than a BFF. Jesus knows them by their name, rounds them up, and brings them home. Jesus is with us always and forever no matter what. At Barnyard Roundup we will hear barn raising stories, along with green pasture singing, creating udderly cool crafts, having bales of fun games, & enjoying bountiful blessing snacks. Friday, August 8 th is potluck where all are welcome to come and hear about our Barnyard Roundup week. Sunday Nursery We now have a Nursery available during Sunday services for children age 2 and under. You will find the nursery room in the basement right next to the elevator. You may drop them off as early as 10 min before the service. If you'd like to volunteer, please contact Heidi Schlieckau with your interest. The goal is to have 1-2 volunteers per service, and only have to volunteer once a month. Thank you to those that have already signed up to help!

5 Bugle Call May 2016 Sisters and Brothers in Christ. Grace and Peace to you from God the Father; From our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; In, with, and through the Holy Spirit. AMEN. As I write this, I note that the past few days, including today, have been simply gorgeous. The temperature has been in the upper 70 s and lower 80 s, the Sun has been high and shining brightly, and the winds have been moderate at most. And I dislike this type of weather with a negative passion exceeded only by my positive passion for my mom s refrigerator oatmeal cookies made with Hickory nuts!! The foregoing analogy was two sides of one coin, but I think you get the point. I simply do not care for Bluebird days (high Sun, heat, and a lack of clouds), especially not in April, when the weather should be cool, perhaps rainy, or spotty rainy, and with cloud cover to obscure the Sun. Perhaps, given what I ve just written, you may find yourself saying, What, is he goofy? What s his problem? Clouds instead of sunshine?? He s daft indeed! You may be more prone to saying these things especially if you enjoy outdoor activities, like golf, or Bocce Ball, or Lawn Jarts, or Croquet. Now, I like the game of golf as well as anyone, and there was a time when I was pretty good at it. But those others? Not so much. And I prefer to go golfing when my favorite outdoor passions are not as efficacious, like in the months of July, and August. But in the months of April and June, and especially May, I want regular rain, significant cloud cover, and an overall dismal and dreary face on the waking hours. Why?? Because that is when the fishing, especially Trout fishing, is the best, and I mean cast-the-fly-in-the-stream-and-hang-on-to-your-hat kind of best. That is when the big trout, old Walter and his friends, come out from under the bank or their lunker structures with a desire to eat like I do at a Wisconsin Friday night fish fry (notice the entendre). Oh yeah, come on rain and clouds!! Bluebird days may be fine for Croquet, but the fishing (even for as an, ahem, accomplished, ahem. Trout fisherman as I am) is just not that good. The Trout are skittish, wary, line-shy, and confoundedly tight-lipped. That is why today, on my day off, I am at my computer writing the Bugle Call article and not out sauntering along a Trout stream. Fear not though. My fly rod is ready to hand and can make an appearance in a moment s notice, as I am often out visiting in close proximity to a Trout stream. And that is easy, as there is more Trout water concentrated in southwest Wisconsin than in many fabled locations, such as Montana, or Wyoming. By far, my best days fishing has been either during or just after a rain, in cool or even cold weather, with the Sun nowhere in sight. One is less observable on a cloudy day. Dressing in earth tones make one nearly invisible to wildlife, especially the nervous and bashful Trout. There are no shadows to spook a rising fish, and the terminal tackle of the fly fisherperson is far less obvious. It is just more difficult for every other living creature to see with great clarity when the Sun is not high in the sky. Perhaps that is why burglars do what they do in the night time, away from the Sun and easy observation. Now, the foregoing provides me with a mental and cogitative pause. Do other areas of my life benefit from being less obvious or more difficult to be readily seen by others? Am I more comfortable not having everyone else see what I do when I think no one else is watching, or when no one else can know my innermost thoughts and desires? What about some of those thoughts or opinions we may have when we think that we are safe from observation? There is an old John Prine song that goes, Heard the police knew everything I thought, what then? What then, indeed? Is there a reason that some of us may prefer to be in the darkness or obscured by clouds and not subject to the illuminating light of the Sun? Is there a reason that some of us may prefer to be in the darkness or obscured by clouds and not subject to the illuminating light of the SON? We may occlude or hide ourselves, our deeds, and our thoughts from others. We may even occlude or hide ourselves, our deeds, and our thoughts, from ourselves, rationalizing away the truth that what we do and think may not be what God would have us do. And that rationalization is indeed contrary to our Christian beliefs. The truth is, we cannot hide from God, no matter how cloudy the day is or how dark the night. That is why we need the illuminating light of Christ in our lives. We need the illuminating light of Christ that guides our actions, nurtures our thoughts and beliefs, and clearly displays our reliance upon the Grace that God provides to us as Christ-followers. Oh yeah, come on the light of the SON!! God s Peace to you Pr Don

6 Spiritual Reflection for May 2016 Let s Talk My fingers stall over the keys as I try to formulate this reflection. It has been on my mind ever since I overheard a comment made during a recent tour of the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC. A group of children age 8 or 9 years old were touring slightly ahead of me and my aunt and I overheard the guide s comment. They were looking out at a veranda where several chairs were arranged in sets of 2 with a table between them. She asked the group what they thought the people did in those big chairs. It was their answers that prompted this reflection. Many of the students responded. They thought perhaps people read books, or painted or watched the birds, or perhaps they slept or played games. After their answers stopped coming the tour guide suggested that they also had conversations in these big inviting chairs! She went on to explain that people actually sat with a glass of lemonade or cup of tea and talked to one another. She then told them this activity was called having a conversation. This was a scary thought to me that we might come to a time when conversation becomes a lost art. Think about the conversations you have had in the last week. How many of them would qualify as a conversation? How many of them involved sitting down next to someone, perhaps having lemonade or tea, and talking about life? Were you aware of the person s tone of voice as they shared their story? Did you recognize their body language as they spoke? Did the words you heard match the tone of voice and the body language? Good communication requires all three. A rich conversation appreciates all three! Those of you who know me personally know that I am not very fond of technology. Recently, I thought I heard disappointment in the voice on the other end of the phone when I had called to let them know about a change in plans. I began a texting session (that is the way of the world, right?) which produced a great deal of anxiety. I was not able to tell if the response to my apology for needing to make the change was in jest or was serious. I quickly responded with a voic and a text indicating that I had sent a voic in an effort to encourage a return call. I wanted to hear their tone of voice. At least then I would have 2 of the 3 components of a conversation. No response. I began reading into the lack of response. Clearly, I had upset this person even more than I originally thought? I didn t know what to do. I had a knot in my stomach. I did not sleep well. A text response came mid-morning the following day. The evening had become busy, the morning had gotten off to a crazy pace and a resolution to my misinterpretation followed. What a poor mode of communication! It is impossible to have a conversation using technology. We need to hear the emotion in the person s voice at a minimum. It is helpful to see their body language, too. We need to connect our human energy. There is so much anxiety, so much disappointment, so much distraction, and so much misinterpretation when messages are sent through devices and it affects us personally. We conjure up all kinds of images. We read way more into the words being sent than were intended. We spend a lot of time apologizing for what has been written and if our words are misinterpreted without knowledge of the pain they have caused we damage our relationships. How will we know when someone is in need of a listening ear if all we read is, I m fine oblivious to the tears dropping onto the keyboard or screen or the waver in their voice? We must be aware of the importance of talking with each other with listening ears and watchful eyes to alert us to potential spiritual distress or despair. There is great power in our words especially when there are actions to match. God s word is brought to life through our actions, as well. We read in Proverbs 12:25, Worry wears a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up. So pull up a chair and suggest, let s talk. May God s Peace Be With You Tammy Koenecke, RN, BSN, MASL Spiritual Care Coordinator, RAMC May our Lord Jesus Christ and God our Father, who loved us and in his special favor gave us everlasting comfort and good hope, comfort your hearts and give you strength in every good thing you do and say. 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17
