BUGLE CALL JUNE 2017 Sisters and Brothers in Christ: Grace and peace to you from God the Father; From our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; In, with, and through the Holy Spirit. AMEN! OK. So I have this magnifying glass with a powerful flashlight that I use for checking the dates and mints of various Wheatback pennies that I come across. And for the most part it works pretty well. So a couple of weeks ago I put new batteries in the unit, and of course it worked fine. Until just recently. I settled in for what I thought was going to be a nice hour-or-so of Wheatback penny examination, got my favorite MiO drink (with ice, of course) ready, put the container of Wheatbacks within reach of my comfy recliner, got the foot rest adjusted just so, had everything ready to go, grabbed a Wheatback, leaned back, flicked on the magnifier light unit and nothing. Rasser, frasser, umpdeump, rasser, frasser. Now what s wrong? It turned out to be that the batteries were drained. And why was that? Cheap batteries, of course. When I went to the store, the bargain basement price was on some batteries that I had never seen before. Onthefritz I think was the name brand. So as I was (in a non-pastoral way) decrying the ineffectiveness of bargain basement batteries, I eventually came to the realization that it was me that had bought the batteries. I had no one to blame but myself for buying the El-cheapo batteries. Rasser, frasser indeed. Now, hold on to that thought On a completely unrelated (????) matter, I recently bought a boat. I didn t want to, but it turned out that I had to as part of a public service effort. Betty brought it to my attention that there were entirely too many fish in the lakes surrounding the Loganville area, and someone had to take on the burden of ridding these pesky, pestilential creatures from the area waters, thereby reducing the level of aggravation suffered by local humans (sometimes pescatores) over the confounding notion that our nearby waterways were being overrun by scale-clad, finny Myxini, Cephalspidmomorphi, Chondrichthyes, and Osteichthyes (commonly called, well, FISH). In this kind of public service matter I find that I was equal to the task. Far be it from me to live in the ambiguity of knowing that many of my fellow Christ-loving humans were being aggravated by too many <>< swimming about. So there you go. That s my story and I m sticking to it So, being ever mindful of safety, and being desirous of obeying the boating laws, coupled with the fact that I have only two functioning life jackets and that there are five people in our family (six with Ashes, but she swims well, I think ) I ventured into the cyber arena on my favorite book site (Amazon.com) to determine if any bargains erupted in their milieu concerning life preservers. Of course, I found many life preservers, in a variety of styles and colors (although there was a dearth of black life preservers, which I have to have, because my truck and my boat are black) and much to my glee, I found numerous inexpensively-priced life preservers. Woo-hoo! I m in business! And then the other shoe fell. I started thinking about the concept of buying cheap life preservers that would eventually be worn by my family members. Are you starting to get the idea? And it put me in mind of the great truth that when I was in law-enforcement, before being called into ministry, the BPUs (Bullet Protective Undergarments) I wore, were all supplied by whom? Why, the lowest bidder, of course!! (Think about that one ) If there ever was an oxymoron, it has to be Cheap Life Preservers!! In that regard, how much did YOU spend for YOUR life preserver? I know how much I spent for MY life preserver, and the answer to that question is absolutely nothing. It is the same amount that YOU paid for your life preserver absolutely nothing! The greatest sea-captain to the smallest hobbyist mariner, from the time that people were people, spent the same amount on their personal life preserver also, absolutely nothing. Humankind paid absolutely nothing for our own personal life preserver. That cost was paid by God the Father in the person of Jesus Christ, in the power of the Holy Spirit. Christ paid the cost to save all humanity from sin by dying an inglorious death on the cross, and then by rising from the grave on the third day. In the text for the Sixth Sunday of Easter, Jesus told the disciples, as part of the Farewell Discourse, the following: In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live
We have life, and will have life eternal because Christ paid the price to become our ultimate Life Preserver. Because Christ lives, we also will live in eternity with God. God s love, revealed in the person of Jesus Christ, in the power of the Holy Spirit, is our Life Preserver that we cannot purchase, no matter the price, because of God s unending love for us. And that is a Life Preserver worthy of the name. God s Peace to you all Pr Don <>< JUNE WELCA NEWS General Business Meeting is Thursday June 7:00pm. Freedom Circle is the host circle for the evening. We had individuals and couples that helped out-many of you helped out on more than one Wednesday! Thank you to families that made food donations to help us out. There were approximately 1,132 meals served to this multi-generational group, and we had to cancel Faith Night twice this winter because of weather. Painting will be done on the exterior south upper windows in June. Council is also planning a fall cleaning workday to finish up our to do list. Alliant Energy will also be moving some electric poles and lines on the church property in the near future.
On June 3rd and 4 th we will be hosting the Synod Review Team in our community. They will be attending worship service on Sunday, June 4 th with us. The Synod Review Team will be holding a forum for the congregation after the Sunday service. All individuals that are interested are encouraged to attend. This is an opportunity for us as a congregation to hear firsthand from others. The team will be sharing their observations, viewpoints and ideas. JOY, Lorinda Broughton h broughton.lm@gmail.com FACES OF THE REFORMATION Philip Melanchthon This novice Greek professor at the University of Wittenberg quickly grew into a gentle giant of the reform movement after he met Luther. Philipp Melanchthon s vital contribution to the Reformation was to systematize Luther s ideas, defend them in public, and make this theology the basis of religious education. Get to know this skilled professor, and in Bible study, see how his hymn text Lord Jesus Christ, with Us Abide illuminates his faith journey and ours. Martin Luther Quotes: --Lord Jesus, You are my righteousness, I am your sin. You took on you what was mine; yet set on me what was yours. You became what you were not, that I might become what I was not.--those who lapse from the Gospel to the Law are no better off than those who lapse from grace to idolatry.
--May a merciful God preserve me from a Christian Church in which everyone is a saint! I want to be and remain in the church and little flock of the fainthearted, the feeble and the ailing, who feel and recognize the wretchedness of their sins, who sigh and cry to God incessantly for comfort and help, who believe in the forgiveness of sins. --God has surely promised His grace to the humbled: that is, to those who mourn over and despair of themselves. But a man cannot be thoroughly humbled till he realizes that his salvation is utterly beyond his own powers, counsels, efforts, will and works, and depends absolutely on the will, counsel, pleasure and work of Another -- God alone. --Faith is under the left nipple. --Pray, and let God worry. Did you Know? Did you know Martin Luther's Small Catechism is included in the back of the red hymnal? Check out pages The Wednesday morning bible study folks learned this recently. Here is Martin Luther's Morning Blessing. In the morning, as soon as you get out of bed, you are to make the sign of the holy cross and say: "God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit watch over me. Amen." Then, kneeling or standing, say the Apostles' Creed and the Lord's Prayer. If you wish, you may in addition recite this little prayer as well: "I give thanks to you, heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ your dear Son, that you have protected me through the night from all harm and danger. I ask that you would also protect me today from sin and all evil, so that my life and actions may please you. Into your hands I commend myself: my body, my soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel be with me, so that the wicked foe may have no power over me. Amen." After singing a hymn perhaps (for example, one on the Ten Commandments) or whatever else may serve your devotion, you are to go to your work joyfully. A Reguest From the Church Office Ann & Sue will both be on vacation July 21st-July 28 th. The due date for the News Letter articles will be due July 18 th in order for Sue to get the News Letter out before leaving. Ann would also appreciate getting bulletin articles turned in earlier that week as well. Thanks in advance for your help & cooperation.
Ann & Sue Spiritual Reflection for June 2017 Where True Beauty is Found You are likely familiar with the phrase, beauty is only skin deep. I never knew where this phrase originated, but Google tells me that it was first used in writings by Sir Thomas Overbury in 1613, which I found amazing. I thought the obsession with external beauty was a phenomenon of our time. I didn t realize this has been a problem for quite a while! I feel compelled to reflect on where true beauty is found. When I was in nursing school I remember learning about the normal developmental changes occuring in the body as it ages. I learned about age spots, loss of skin elasticity, and the presence of wrinkles. I learned about decreasing metabolism, which often results in weight gain and difficulty losing weight and of course the hair turning gray, or falling out. I learned that people can struggle with these changes. I was prepared, at age 30, to help both men and women adjust to their normal changes and was ready to support them as they grieved the loss of their youthful appearance while assuring them they were still beautiful. Well, that was all well and good when I was 30! Now in the midst of these changes myself it is harder to believe. It s not easy to maintain society s standards for beauty. But we can age gracefully (I like that) as we discover the truth of where true beauty is found. It will be difficult for some of you to relate to this reflection. When you are in the midst of youth it is hard to believe that beauty comes from deep inside. Your focus tends to be on body sculpting, building muscle, ensuring smooth silky skin and hair, having super white teeth and the list goes on. Many people go to great lengths to ensure they keep their outer beauty and ward off the aging process (which will come for all of us). Don t misunderstand me I believe in keeping our bodies healthy and strong, but society s obsession with outer beauty has both men and women distracted from the most important aspect of beauty, their inner spirit. I was there once. I remember a time when I declined an invitation to a gathering with friends because I didn t like the way I looked in the mirror. I believed the lies found in fashion magazines and on television that I could only be accepted if I was beautiful on the outside, if I looked a certain way. If only I had known then what I know now. I have learned the most important lessons about beauty from some amazingly spiritual men and women over the years. These individuals have a deep regard for true beauty and have helped me understand it is never found on the surface. True beauty is found on the inside and it is deepened by spending time with your Higher Power, with God, reading, praying, practicing mindfulness. It can be seen in the person who stops what they are doing to help someone else. It shines through the smile and outstretched hand of a caregiver. It is heard in the soothing song of a grandmother holding a sick child. It is felt in the gentle touch of a calloused hand. It is also found in quiet solitude and movement of the heart toward forgiveness. What could be more beautiful than reconciliation. Grace poured out for another. Grace, the total acceptance of others, having a deep compassion for their personal journey without needing an explanation. That s beautiful! In time you will discover that all the hype about external beauty is nonsense. The outside has nothing to do with true beauty. In fact, focusing on the outer shell often interferes with the conditioning of the spirit, the deepening of our connections with others. I believe individuals who extend grace towards others, and age ever so gracefully, hold the key to where true beauty is found.
Questions to ponder: How do I see beauty in myself? How would others define my beauty? What does God see in me? What practices can I adopt to deepen my spiritual beauty? How can I help others see their inner beauty? May God s Peace Be Yours, Tammy Koenecke, RN, BSN, MASL Spiritual Care Coordinator, RAMC Beauty is only skin deep. In other words a pleasing appearance can be misleading! Save the date July 9 th for St. Peter s Church Annual Ice Cream Social 325 Mill St, Loganville, WI Hot Sandwiches / Cheese Sandwiches / Pickles Homemade Cakes & Pies It is time for the 73rd annual Ice Cream Social. Sandwiches will be made and pies / cakes will be cut, meals for the shut-ins will be assembled and delivered. This commitment to help takes about an hour. Remember to sign-up!!! We do need all your help at the social for serving sandwiches, cakes and pies, runners to bring supplies to the food line. Where ever you feel able to help, know you are greatly appreciated.
