A labyrinth is simply a place to walk and pray. There is nothing mystical about it. It gives you the freedom to walk around while focusing your mind on God and not worry about getting lost. A labyrinth contains a single walking path to the center and then back out again. It has many turns but, unlike mazes, does not have dead ends. Labyrinths have a long history, both inside and outside the church, and can be found all around the world. In Christian usage, the purpose of the labyrinth is personal and spiritual transformation. One way to pray a labyrinth is to worship and praise God as you walk to the center, then intercede for people and concerns as you walk back to the outside. Today there are churches from many different denominations that encourage people to use labyrinths as part of their devotional practices. We invite you to walk the labyrinth on the east side of the parking lot and pray. If you find that it helps you relax and concentrate on God, then good use it. If it doesn t help you, then use other prayer tools.

BUGLE CALL SEPTEMBER 2018 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ! Grace and Peace to you from God the Father; From our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; In, with, and through the Holy Spirit. AMEN!! Well, what have you heard lately, either in personal conversation, in and around your attendance and participation at church, or through the media that has somewhat troubled or challenged you? Has there been anything particularly noteworthy that your attention has focused upon, or made you feel affirmed, or made you feel like you wanted to throw a shoe through the television screen (ala any Packer game last year after Rodgers got hurt) or made you want to weep either in frustration, or sorrow, or despair? Or, have you felt entirely connected with what has been discussed or addressed? Take Church, for instance. For the past month our Gospel texts have been from the 6 th chapter of the Gospel of John, and have been what theologians have come to term, The Bread of Life discourse. So, bread is what it is. Perhaps you have a tried and true recipe for a favorite kind of bread that you like to have around the house. Or perhaps you have a favorite kind of bread that you purchase from the store (remember Wonder Bread? Builds strong bodies 12 ways?) or maybe even someone close to you provides you with loaves that they make by hand. Either way, bread is bread. It could be light and airy, or dense and fibrous. But why even focus upon bread? Well, for one thing, every time we collectively or individually pray the Lord s Prayer, we plead for God to provide us with our Daily Bread. In the meaning of that prayer, we ask God to provide us, daily, with all that we need to live as followers of Christ. So we ask for bread, but we mean so much more. And it is true that the term bread means so many things, and perhaps it is different for all people. When I was younger (and every year that time span seems to get much longer, and exponentially so) the word bread meant money. Now clearly we do not ask in the Lord s Prayer for God to supply us with money, for after all money is just a tool, and is simply a convenient social construct that provides a framework for obtaining goods, services, and sustenance. But giving that irksome social construct its due, it is the way that we as people of the unreal world do business sometimes. In the 6 th chapter of the Gospel of John, Jesus identifies himself as the living bread that came down from heaven. In the parlance of the meaning of the word bread, we can without question see that the bread that came down from heaven does indeed provide us with all that we need to navigate this world. Jesus is indeed that which sustains us, compels us upon our journeys, and keeps us forever in His grace. But what else feeds us? What else feeds us in perhaps unhealthy, or non-life giving ways? What is it upon which we chew or gnaw or vigorously consume so much so that it becomes part of us? Are there unhealthy, non-life giving pursuits in which we participate or even nurture and tend to as one of the ways in which sin manifests itself in this world? And how are we complicit? How are we inveigled into assenting to this deleterious practice? How are we unknowingly (or knowingly) brought into the realm of tacit, if not overt, approval? All that we have been, all that we are, and all that we will ever become is from consuming this great gift that has been given to us by God. And by consuming, we eat the bread (body), we drink the wine (blood) of this great gift. We become that which we follow, that which we find true, and that in which we believe. The consuming of this Bread of Life is all that we are, and it is found in the person and the work of Jesus Christ. As Christ followers we have the Bible from which to learn what Jesus taught us so long ago, and continues to teach us now. In the Bible we find the words of Jesus as He struggled to teach and provide direction for how we are to live our lives. Now, you all know the stories. Jesus taught that there are two commandments upon which we are to live most assuredly: To love God with our whole heart, soul, strength, and mind; And to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. What gets in the way with that sometimes (if we let it!!!) is allowing the bread with which others try to nourish us (not Jesus the Life Giving bread that came down from Heaven, but rather the self-serving, divisive, marginalizing, separating bread that divides us and shatters compassion) become acceptable, common place, legitimate, normal, and encouraged. NO HUMAN BEING, who has been created by God, for whom Jesus Christ came down from Heaven and died and then rose again, in whom the Holy Spirit provides the still, small voice inspiring us as does a loving God NO HUMAN BEING, created, loved, and sustained by the Triune God can ever be deservedly called a dog, a rat, an SOB, any racial epithet, disparaged for their intelligence level, belittled for their physical appearance, marginalized for being differently-abled, or sneered at for their lack of worldly wealth. That kind of bread, that is sometimes attempted to be fed to us, is the rotting, worm-eaten bread that is not life giving, and is the antithesis of being able to acknowledge that in looking at another person (and that means any person) we see the face of someone who is beloved of God. Heavenly Father, we entreat You and pray that You always give us Jesus, the True Bread that came down from Heaven, as our life-giving bread, for all eternity. AMEN!! God s Peace to you all Pastor Don <><

Fleeting Thoughts by Carolyn Meyer I receive daily devotional s on various subjects from the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church website (welca.org). Two of them struck a chord within me, or was it the Holy Spirit nudging me, that I wish to share with you this month: Being diagnosed with a serious illness changes your life. When the specialist sat next to me with that look on his face, it was frightening. He was talking about things going on in my physical being, as much me as my mind and my soul. He reassured me that although my disease has no cure (yet) it is controllable. Through services of anointing in my parish, I found comfort. I wasn t alone: Christ was and is with me, my congregation is with me, my doctors are with me. Even though my disease has no cure (yet), my frightened soul has been healed. Hold on to this thought: You are not alone. Christ is with you. The people of God will support you. Pray, and ask your faith community to keep you in their prayers. Whether or not your doctors find a cure for your disease, you can still find healing in the love of God and the care of God s people. (Adapted from On the diagnosis of disease, a devotion found in Living from the Heart of God: A Journal for Life s Stages, published by Women of the ELCA in 2007.) This is the second one: Mental or emotional illness can affect the routines and practices of our lives or those of our loved ones. Friends and family members are vital to healing for someone living with an emotional illness. You can name the symptoms you observe without denying or minimizing a person s value. Speak the truth, rather than offering wishful thinking or remaining silent. Be an informed observer: Read and learn about the mental illness that impacts someone you know. And be sure to care for yourself, so your own strength can be useful. The path toward wellness requires safe space for personal truth and th steady support of those who care. We can offer a lifeline just by being present often that s really the best we can offer to a friend or family member living with mental illness. (Adapted from Journey to Healing written by Carol Schickel in the September 2011 issue of Gather)

Spiritual Reflection Letter for September 2018 Need to Know I set off for my silent retreat with one question in mind, what is next? I have reached an age when the question of what s next in life seems to pop up from time to time. Years ago, this question struck me as I watched the documentary titled, Consider the Conversation. In the documentary a gentleman being interviewed described life as always knowing what s next. He began by describing the natural order of things from childhood through young adulthood. Then he pointed out that there comes a time in life when we don t know what s next. Heading off on retreat, I had an urgent need to know. After hours of prayer and reflection about whether I was on the right path for my life, open to learning, building relationships, giving my attention to the right places, I came away from my retreat having no idea what the future holds! No idea what s next! But, I actually gained a level of peace in not knowing. I was assured that I did not need to know. Here is how I came to this realization. As I began to reflect on my life I realized that there had never been a time in my life when I knew what was next. My life played out the way it was supposed to without me needing to know. I began to understand that if I had known what was next, I would not have grown spiritually. I would not have learned to trust. I would not have learned patience through times of anticipation. I would not have experienced the joy found in surprises. I would have been reluctant to build relationships for fear they would be lost too soon. As hard as it might be to admit life is better when we don t need to know the future (funny how this well-known truth had slipped my mind with this urgent desire to know). Consider for yourself the times you wondered about the future. Ask yourself these difficult questions. How is it I arrived at this place in time? Who have been the instrumental people in my life, my mentors, and my supporters? How have I come to know a higher power in my life? What can be learned from my life experiences? As you take the time to ponder these questions can you see how valuable they are in deepening awareness into your own spirituality? I will admit at first I was disappointed that I was not enlightened as to the accuracy of my life choices, but in the end I arrived at a new level of peace in not knowing. I was reminded of two bible verses, which brought me great comfort as I pondered what s next. The first was from Jeremiah 29:11, For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. The second verse is from Psalm 37:7, Be still in the presence of the Lord, and wait patiently for him to act. They suggest patience. They encourage trust. These verses suggest that wondering is normal, for they offer great advice. They also remind me that I am not alone in whatever lies before me, whether I know what is ahead of me or not. When I keep my mind focused on the bigger picture and the fact I have a role in it, I am assured that it will unfold exactly as it is supposed to and there will be no need to know. Questions to ponder: What is my level of need to know? How can I trust God to lead me on the right path? Where can I seek comfort in being patient? Who will mentor me in my unfolding future? May God s Peace Be With You, Tammy Koenecke, RN, BSN, MASL Spiritual Care Coordinator, RAMC

Council News September 2018 Council is hosting the South Central Synod Meet and Greet. Please join us and learn what other Lutherans are thinking about in our neighboring churches. See the calendar for details. Arrangements have been made for Faith Night staff to learn about safety procedures on Aug. 29 th. We will also be sharing what we have learned with the congregation. You may notice hardware has been installed that was recommended to us on the classroom doors for safety in the basement area. The special congregational meeting approved monies to move forward with the project of two new emergency doors that will be installed before winter. We have gathered a committee to research ideas to make our sanctuary welcoming to individuals with walkers and wheelchairs. We are looking forward to giving people choices of where they can sit in our sanctuary- not limiting individuals to a certain spot. If you have comments or questions concerning this please talk to Pastor Don. The committee will present their findings to council for action. We would like to encourage you to come and invite others to Faith Night. What a great way to fellowship, learn, and work together with others in our church community! This is especially important for our youth- we have been entrusted with guiding them in their daily lives. Let s model for them what we believe Jesus has done for all! Tammy Koenecke will be doing a presentation on Health Directives on September 26 th. Everyone 18 years old should have a health directive. If you don t, this is an opportunity to learn about it! Mark your calendar. I appreciate your opinions, ideas, and encourage you to contact me whenever you feel the need. Please pray for all your church leaders.
