7 Spiritual Reflection for July 2018 When We Don t Fully Understand I sat down to complete an application for attending a certification course. I have filled out a number of applications for various things over the years and was certain this would not take long. The first question, however, caused me to pause and wonder just how to present my answer. It asked me to explain why I was interested in this certification. The real answer is, I am not sure. How can we answer questions when we don t fully understand? This might seem like a silly predicament, but so often I am called to do something and cannot explain why I am doing it. Something tells me I should go to a particular place, call a certain person, take a different road home, make an unplanned stop at the store and I follow through even when I don t understand. This has happened over the years more times than I can tell you. What I have come to believe is that each of these last minute decisions is part of a bigger plan. I accept that I do not always need to understand, but I do need to trust there is a reason. The program I am applying for will fill no immediate need, yet I am compelled to pursue it. I am being called to do something that would not make sense to most people. Based on my history I am trusting that it is preparing me for something I will be called to do in the future. I don t know that, but I sense it within my spirit. Following my spirit may not be an acceptable answer on an application, but it is the answer I have at this time. How often do things happen in our lives that we simply do not understand? For some things we may never have an explanation for why things happened the way they did. Often the question why is for more difficult circumstances than my simple application question, but the same response applies. We have to trust that there is a bigger picture we cannot see. We have to trust that everything that happens has an effect on something else. When you feel called to do something that is outside of your normal routine, I encourage you to think it through, pray about it, make sure it is not going to cause you or anyone else harm and follow through. You cannot know the impact your smile will have on someone struggling through their day, heavily burdened with loss, feeling hopeless. During an unplanned grocery store stop you might be the only person all day that takes the time to help someone who feels alone, uncared for. When someone comes into your heart and mind, give them a call, maybe they need to hear a friendly voice. There are several verses in the bible that encourage us to trust without question and I find myself referring to them often. One of my favorite verses is found in Proverbs 3:5-6. Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will direct your paths. Whether you are suddenly facing a change you didn t want or you are being moved to do something that wasn t on your to do list, trust that there is a higher purpose. It is the best way to approach life when we don t fully understand. Questions to ponder: Where do I seek understanding? When was I called to do something that wasn t on my calendar? What happened when I followed an unusual decision to do something? Where is God in my desire to understand what is happening in my life? May God s Peace be Yours, Tammy Koenecke, RN, BSN, MASL Spiritual Care Coordinator, RAMC Don t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. If you do this, you will experience God s peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

9 Bugle Call July 2018 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ! Grace and Peace to you from God our Father; From our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; In, with, and through the Holy Spirit. AMEN!! Perhaps we have observed, or paid attention to, or have been befuddled, stupefied, or even dismayed by events in history. Perhaps the reasons for our befuddlement, stupefaction, or dismay were from events long ago, or perhaps those events weren t from so long ago. Regardless, it may be a generalization (but a generalization that is perchance not overstated) that we are not all of one mind when we view those events. What is it that governs our interactions with each other? How do we comport ourselves in a manner that is consistent with our calling as Christ-followers? How do we relate to each other when we are divided upon some issue, or are diametrically opposed to each other in terms of practices or policies that affect how we approach our calling to follow Jesus? And what does it mean to follow Jesus? Now, to be very brief (assuredly more brief than does justice to the foregoing question) I mean the Jesus who, in the 22 nd chapter of Matthew quoted, in part, Deuteronomy 6:5, by telling a Pharisaic lawyer that the greatest commandment in the law is, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Jesus did indeed teach that the command to love God and one s neighbor are essential for us to be Christ-followers. We need to note too, however, that Jesus also was on many occasions at odds with the Hebrew religious elite (Pharisees, Sadducees, scribes, Herodians) and it was also Jesus who told the Apostle Peter (when Peter attempted to rebuke Jesus in His stated mission and journey to the Cross of glory) to, Get behind me, Satan!, because Peter was setting his mind on human things, and not on divine things. (Please spend some time reflecting upon that.) In the Gospel according to John, Jesus words of love are set forth in much more visceral terms: I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. (John 13:34-35) Jesus showed and embodied His own instructions to love one another in the most profound way, by dying on the cross, and then rising again for the salvation of us all. Also, Jesus showed and embodied His love for us all by preaching, teaching, healing those who were blind, sick, and demon possessed, raising people from the dead, stilling a storm that threatened to capsize a boat in which He rode, showing mercy to those who were being persecuted, and humbling Himself when He washed the disciples feet in the night in which He was betrayed. Jesus also advocated for those who were oppressed by, again, dying on the cross and then rising again for the salvation of all. He also called the disciples (meaning, ALL of US), cleansed the temple, advocated for social justice by standing up against those who oppressed the marginalized and vulnerable, feeding thousands (4 and 5), blessing the little children (several times), denouncing the religious elite, casting out demons, and instituting Holy Communion, through which our sins are forgiven. Now, where to go from here?

10 In Deuteronomy (one of the first five books in the Old Testament, sometimes called the Pentateuch, or sometimes called one of the books of Moses) 5:12-15, it reads that we are to, Observe the Sabbath day and keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. So far, so good, nothing really extraordinary here, in fact they are good words to live by. But do please read the following verses in Deuteronomy about labor and work, for oneself, one s slaves, one s animals, for the resident alien in the towns, so that all may rest. Now, in verse 15, the following is set forth: Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm; therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath. What that passage means to me is that all of us come from humble beginnings. We were all slaves at one point, either to sin or to those things that are not life-giving, and it is only though God s love and grace that we have become anything more. The penultimate idea that I would like to address in this brief (although it is getting longer ) article is something that we have covered recently, back on May 20 th (Confirmation day for Lauren, Hailey, and Halle, and Betty s 59 th birthday) and it comes to us from the Gospel according to John, chapter 16, verse 2: Jesus said, They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, an hour is coming when those who kill you will think that by doing so they are offering worship to God. In that account, Jesus is telling His disciples that He is giving them instruction in order to keep them from stumbling, and then warning them that they will be persecuted for their beliefs, cast out of the synagogue and even killed, and those that do the persecution or the killing will think they are doing God s will, and worshipping God through their exclusionary deeds. Wow. Holy Scripture sure does pack a punch! So I guess that discipleship, or following Jesus, being Christ-followers, can be costly. It may require commitment, prayers for guidance, and deep and continuing prayers to God for our enlightenment and discernment about what it means to follow Him. In this article so far we have heard from the Hebrew Bible and the Gospels, so I think it is appropriate to close with this writing from the Apostle Paul s letter to the Church at Ephesus, chapter 4. Paul writes, I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. But each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ s gift. All of us, regardless of race, color, creed, nationality, or humble beginnings, are ONE in CHRIST, called to act in love toward each other. God s Peace to you all Pastor Don <><
