2 2 What s ew. First of all, this month we want to give a huge thank you to Kent Kaluf for creating a beautiful new website for the Philosophical Library. It s a bright, easy to use site that really portrays a new-found openness, peace, and spaciousness that has come together in our new location at 2091 East Valley Parkway in Escondido. Take a look at philosophicallibrary.org, and check the calendar for upcoming events. So to Kent THANK YOU! We checked with Kent and he s given us permission to share his and phone number. If you are as impressed with the new site as we were during it s inception and completion you ll want to contact him if you need a website. Our Annual New Year's day pot-luck and collage making activity will be held at its usual time: 1pm for the pot-luck followed by collage making. This Library tradition has become a favorite over the years. The collages are done, keeping the Library in mind, with the resolution to project a prosperous and spirit-filled year for the Library. Come join us for a very fun time! A new discussion group is forming led by Jim Morriset for Men Only! The group will gather on Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. Jim has extensive experience working with groups and specifically men's issues. On December 3rd Sue Simmons will fill us in on What s Happening and Beyond. On Saturday, December 13, Victoria Sky Dancer will be hosting a Premier Party for the CD Phoenix~Song, a CD of channeled songs brought forth through the voice of Shekhinah, carried by Victoria. A mini-concert is on the agenda as well as a guided meditation on Phoenix energy. Don t miss it! Lots of new things to fit into the busy holiday schedule. Give a gift to yourself and take a break at the Library! ewsletter Submissions and Scheduling In order to serve our members, giving enough prior advance notice for events, classes, etc. we MUST have the newsletter ready to be mailed early enough in the month. This means that items for the newsletter need to be submitted by the 8 th of the preceding month, allowing for creating, proofreading, revisions, printing, processing, etc. For booking new events, check with Genny Carr at (760) as to availability of dates. Once your date and time has been established, you need to write a description of the event. This blurb should be kept to a reasonable length (75 words or less see current items) and include a contact person and number and/or address for further information. You should also indicate whether you will be charging a fee or it will be on a donation basis to the Library. Send these blurbs to Jan at janieb@cox.net. A meeting room is available for those looking for a facility to hold a class, workshop, speaker, etc. Room fee is $15 per hour, with a two-hour minimum. Expiration Date: December 30, 2008 The earth, as we experience it in the Northern Hemisphere, quiets. The calm and rest are more apparent farther east. Snow and cold, and calm, prevail in nature. The northern end of the West coast is more typical of winters, snow and cold rains. It s a little warmer here in the San Diego area, but the feeling of rest and quiet still pervades. Take some time for yourself during this month of December, and experience some of that quiet. You don t need to start meditating, or rearrange your day for extra time; this can be a hectic time of the year. This is why we all need to partake of that quiet, if just for a few minutes a day. Our minds are conditioned to seek input. The radio is turned on as soon as we get into the car. The television is turned on as soon as we get home. Music and product ads inhabit the grocery store. Music in elevators and doctor s offices plays constantly. One of the gas stations I stopped at recently had a television screen at every pump; as soon as I started pumping gas my space was invaded with commercials for late night talk shows and weather reports. It s almost deafening, you can t get away from it. And it grabs our attention almost every time if not it is running in the background, which is almost worst. Finding that quiet time can be easy as I said there is no need to sit in a lotus position in a sacred place. Wherever you are is a sacred place. Just turn off the radio in the car. Don t turn on the TV as soon as you get home. If you listen to music at home, turn it off. If you can, try this at work. Listen to the silence. At first your mind will grasp a kind of withdraw may take place. In the silence is Presence. More accurately in the silence one can feel the Presence. Let your thoughts go where they will, don t try to suppress them. Just let arise what arises and acknowledge it. Let it be. Don t try to figure out why or what you re thinking. The mind is so used to figuring things out looking for explanations, rationalizing, judging, and looking for a sense of equalization. How can this be? the mind asks. Well, it says, there is this and then there is that and, or what about this, and on and on. There is no explanation other than: It just is. This is the way it is. This is what will be discovered when the mind is allowed to experience The Silence. That Presence is found in between the input of constant judgment coming from your own mind. That Presence is found in the silence. Whether that silence is for a few minutes without the television running, in your car with the radio off, or in between the words of a co-worker during a conversation. You may find the quiet to be quite addictive. It is a natural state of being. You will also find after a little while that you are not just the one who is taking in the quiet spaciousness and Presence, but also the one who is initiating it, creating it in your life for yourself and others. You will be the Spaciousness for whatever is going to take place to just take place. You are that already, but the mind s constant craving just gets in the way a little, that s all. Whichever Holidays you choose to observe during this season, may you enjoy them with those in your life you love and consider special. Blessings ~ Ron 3
