2 2 What s ew. A few days ago, I was walking along a brick path in our garden. Ant colonies had come up between the bricks. They were also very irritated with me. Having stepped a little to close, they swarmed the sole of the sandal I was wearing. But that did not stop the work being done this day. Ants ran around busily pushing about small grains of dirt and rubbish they had removed from their nest. Despite the heat of the afternoon, they worked at a feverish pace. Watching them was hypnotic until after a few minutes I felt as though I was hit between the eyes with a stone. I was being taught a lesson. How many times, I thought, have I pushed about things in an attempt to make my life better? Do you know what I mean - have you ever felt like an ant - just pushing your little piles of dirt (books, videos, possessions) around and around as though there was some supreme importance to it? Of course I m not against having a clean, orderly home. For those ants it is a matter of survival, instinct born into them from countless centuries. What was it with me, I wondered. What do I own that really is important? I don t own anything that s very valuable. Is the small collection of books I own, most of which I ve only read once, really important? Are the albums (yes, I am old, these are real vinyl albums) some of which I have toted about for 30 years really that important? My old pickup truck is getting a bit long in the tooth and will soon have to go. I like it, but would I move on without it? Does any of my stuff really add to the quality of my life, or just add more stuff to it? So many times I ve moved around, packed up and stored, filled the garage with things I ll probably never need things from so long ago it doesn t serve a need or purpose now. Things I ve hung onto because I just may need it in that undeterminable time and place in the future some day. Usually, when these things turn up, it is not only a surprise to see them again, but they are in the way. It s survival for the ants. There may be an emotional attachment for me, but it is not survival! I have begun to divest myself of a lot of things. It is so easy now with online access. E-bay, Craig s List, or Freecycle are easy to use. I know, because I can do it. Local charities with resale shops always need clothing, furniture, and small goods. The Philosophical Library would be glad to take any books, cds, tapes, etc. of a Spiritual nature. We also host a garage sale at one of the volunteer s home every now and then. Give us a call for information about the next one. Every little bit helps. So far my venture of streamlining has produced far greater results than I expected. I ve raised a little extra money, helped a couple local charities, and made a little extra room in the garage. But the greatest result of all I hadn t anticipated. It has cleared those things not only out of my garage and bedroom, but out of my head. A feeling of expanse has moved in. Less clutter, fewer things with which to deal. Those things you ve kept for years do you need them? What have you been carrying around? An old box of magazines, the anger towards a sibling over something that happened 20 years ago, the grudge against the restaurant that mixed up your take-out The Philosophical Library is located next door to St. Clare s Home at 2411 E. Valley Pkwy. Our driveway is right next to the Amvets resale shop. The Philosophical Library is a non-profit organization. The Library is run by dedicated volunteers and has been a community asset in Escondido since With over 10,000 books, audio, video and reference materials, it is the largest privately owned lending library open to the public in Southern California. Our selections cover an extremely wide range of spiritual topics from Astrology to Zoroasterism - and everything in between! We have classes, seminars, and special events scheduled everyday. Come visit with us and relax with a book for a while. There s a new Gift Shop with a selection of gems and crystals, gifts, new and used books, and incense. Sue does a combination numerology-tarot reading: $15 for 15 min; $30 for 30 min. Sue has been an astrologer for 20 years and has taught beginning and intermediate astrology and numerology classes for the last 8 years. Call the Library at (760) or just drop in. Kaballah Readings Thursdays, 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Leslie Saunders will be at the Library on Thursdays from 2-5 p.m. Leslie does Kaballah readings utilizing Hebrew cards. You can phone for an appointment (760) ewsletter Submissions and Scheduling In order to serve our members, giving enough prior advance notice for events, classes, etc. we MUST have the newsletter ready to be mailed early enough in the month. This means that items for the newsletter need to be submitted by the 8 th of the preceding month, allowing for creating, proofreading, revisions, printing, processing, etc. For booking new events, check with Genny Carr at (760) as to availability of dates. Once your date and time has been established, you need to write a description of the event. This blurb should be kept to a reasonable length (75 words or less see current items) and include a contact person and number and/or address for further information. You should also indicate whether you will be charging a fee or it will be on a donation basis to the Library. Send these blurbs to Jan at janieb@cox.net. A meeting room is available for those looking for a facility to hold a class, workshop, speaker, etc. Room fee is $15 per hour, with a two-hour minimum. Contact Genny at (760) order last year? Let it go! Stop carrying it around, tripping over it, talking about it, having to deal with it. You may be attached. It may take a little time. Once their problem of having someone in their space was gone, life went on. Another lesson? A Home Of Our Own! As you know, the Board of Directors has decided to begin the process of finding a permanent home for the Library. The first possibility that comes to mind is to raise funds to purchase a place. However, there is a second possibility - that someone would be willing to donate a building to the Library. Because the Library is a non-profit corporation, the donor would be able to claim the value of the building as a donation on their income tax. In the near future, we will be contacting the members and friends of the Library to begin the first phase of the Capital Campaign. This process may take a couple of years to obtain sufficient funds. Our current lease situation is uncertain; it is possible that we might have to move before we have raised enough money. If a building is donated, we will use the Capital Campaign funds already gathered to renovate and furnish our new home. If you know of anyone who owns a building and might consider donating it to us, please let the committee know. The Capital Campaign Committee is now meeting in the Library on the 2nd & 4th Thursday nights at 7:30 PM. Please join us. We also invite you to participate in this endeavor by setting your intentions and prayers in alignment with our goal - that the Library may have, after 45 years, "a home of our own."
