Louise Marshall, shown here with her new Sony laptop computer! Many thanks to Sony Corporation, all of our volunteer staff who made this happen, and all of our Library community who bought tickets. Winner s Day was quite delightful. Dr. Rich Davidson explored ways to deal with loving yourself enough. Melissa and Bert De La Rosa Hearts in Harmony gifted us with heart-felt music literally! The raffle earned us $800, much-needed funds to help keep us afloat in a sinking economy. Issue New Membership Cards: we are very close to being ready to issue new membership cards with barcodes, enabling us to check books in and out via the computer. Before a new card can be issued, all members must complete an information sheet; then the information will be entered into the computer and you will receive your card. We will NOT be doing this process through the mail. Since it may take a few minutes, we want you to plan on spending a few extra minutes. This process will happen when you come in to renew your membership and/or the first time you come in to check out or return books. The Library is finally in the computer age! A room is available for monthly rental as well as rental of private rooms for readings, or counseling sessions on an hourly basis. This is your Library and the staff would love to hear from you regarding your experience here. What do you enjoy? What groups/classes would you like to have available that is not happening now? How might you be open to participate in the life of your Library in a new way? We have placed a Suggestion Box on the desk in the Circle Room. 2 Page 2 Other Than This This months other than this is not going to be about something other than this! This article is going to be about the Library, and the volunteers who make it work those people, who without their effort, we could not keep the doors open. The Philosophical Library was founded as a non-profit organization in 1964 and has been staffed and run by VOLUNTEERS for its entire 46 years history. Volunteers come in to clean the carpet, simply wash windows, or update our website, and they are too numerable to mention yet by their very efforts the Library continues on providing resources as a unique, valuable asset to the North County communities. Some volunteers help for a couple hours a week and some a few more. Speaking of cleaning, PLEASE notice the item on page 5 about an upcoming pot-luck fun day of cleaning and socializing on Oct.23 rd. We do need YOU! So our Executive Director, Genny Carr, has initiated a small way to say thank you to those volunteers who have gone above and beyond expectations in promoting and maintaining the Philosophical Library s Mission Statement: Where spiritual seekers meet, learn, and grow. A volunteer who has shown exemplary efforts in this way shall be highlighted in a separate column of the Newsletter every month. It is my privilege to kick off this promotion by announcing our first Volunteer of the Month Laura Bogunovich. Many, many thanks to Laura, the Library s chief Librarian who you will find several afternoons every week making sure the entire Library s most special asset and content, its books and media collection, are collated, organized, shelved, labeled, culled, straightened and cleaned constantly. Constantly! Laura does have a couple helpers we can always count on, Brett and Amy. (Thanks you two!) But she is the hub around which turns the wheel of that entire process. She also handles the books donated to the Library (YES we ll accept any books and media you d like to donate!) checking them against shelf stock, assigning Dewey decimal numbers, completing an entry in the computer for each and getting them on the shelf. I tire just writing about what she does! Again, many thanks to you Laura, and congratulations on being the Library s first Volunteer of the Month! So many help keep the Library doors open. Know your efforts are greatly appreciated. There is pleasure in writing an article for this Newsletter every month. But in doing so I ve never forgotten the reason I can is because of the incredible efforts of a team composed of individuals like Laura with unique talents VOLUNTEERS. 4 Page 4 Friday Events The Historical Jesus Fridays, 2:00 p.m. (ends 10/8) Everyone who has even the faintest knowledge of Jesus has an opinion about him, and these opinions vary widely not only among lay people but even among historical scholars who have given their lives to the task of reconstructing what Jesus was really like what he really said and did. These lectures are designed to explain why it has proved so difficult to know about the man behind the myth and to see what conclusions modern scholars have drawn about him.
