One such nnovaton, to be ntroduced January 15, s converson of The Walnut room, located on the fourth floor of the Student Center, nto a cafetera. H0wever, Covn s resgnaton may cause the openng of the Walnut Room to be delayed ndefntely. Bowers explaned, The rooms ready to go, but we may encounter a staffng and supervsory problem. Whether he can take on all ths by hmself s the problem. Covn agreed that staff problems had been very great, but felt hs departure would present.no undue dffcultes. It mght slow down expanson some, but I don t really thnk t would cause any greatlproblems. There doesn't have to be any problems because the deas have been brought out already. Hunt, Jr.. the newly elected Democratc Leutenant Governor who assumes offce as North Carolna s frst full tme Lt. Governor. Hunt s a State graduate and former Student Body Presdent. Councl of State members, Robert Morgan, Attorney General; John R. Ingram, Commssoner of Insurance; Wllam C. Creel, Commssoner of Labor: Dr. A. Crag Phllps, Superntendant of Publc Instructon: Henry L. Durng hs legslatve tenure. he advocated and supported legslaton for such ssues and causes as reorganzaton of state government. reformaton of the judcary. restructurng of hgher educaton, and drug abuse. Holshouser has served as House Mnorty Leader. House-Senate Caucus Leader. and Vce-Charman of the House Rules and Judcary Commttees. The Governor also served three terms as charman of the State Republcan Party. HOLSHOUSER was nstrumental n helpng to organze and create the Regonal Mental Health Authorty and served on the frst advsory board. Gardner Arboretum s only sxty percent fnshed, although the orgnal dedcaton date of January 8 has passed. Accordng to Dck Annand. grounds superntendent for the Physcal Plant. the ground was too wet for plantng durng much of December. All of the plant materal has been donated by the nurseres, we have ths. and we could have been 95 percent of the way fnshed f there had not been so much ran. The dedcaton of the arboretum was set for Monday, but t was postponed because of weather condtons. Presently t has been ndefntely postponed untl the chances for better weather have mproved. SOME CONTROVERSY has arsen over the plans by the landscape archtect Geoffry McLean to remove several large Red Cedar trees surroundng the arboretum ste. Opponents of the removal clam t s not necessary. but McLean has defended hs plan as techncally and aesthetcally necessary. Accordng to Armand, the plans stll call for the removal of the trees. Wth the Physcal Plant dong the constructon. the arboretum has been bult almost completely from donatons. snce no state funds were avalable for the project. The concert was poorly planned, poorly supervsed and, n short, nothng more than a waste of money. The Entertanment Commttee has succeeded admrably n squanderng ts money all semester, and ts $500 outlay for the Roberts concert countnued ts reputaton for thoughtless plannng. The performance attendance was hampered by the fact that lttle attenton was gven by the Commttee to publczng the event. Few students even knew that the concert was to be gven. Ths reflects the nablty of the commttee to deal wth the realty of the stuaton. Odds are that any underpublczed event s gong to lose money, and that was exactly the poston the planners of Monday nght s concert put themselves n. Earler last semester, the Entertanment Commttee exhbted ts poor attempts at concert plannng by presentng n the Student Center Theatre concerts whch were unsutable to the premses. The result were that the new Theatre was badly damaged by carpet burns and equpment was damaged. The new Theatre s smply not conducve by the very nature of ts atmosphere to hard reek concerts. Ths poor plannng has also had nherent n t a dsregard for the tastes of the students. The entertanment provded by the Entertanment Commttee and most other campus actvtes commttees has shown an amazng lack of varety. Evdence as to the reason why ths lack of varety n muscal entertanment s controlled by a small and elte group of students. For example, Jm Trce, who s char man of the Entertanment Commttee for the Student Center, s the charman n - l charge of plannng All-Campus weekend. It s nfortunate that these thngs have One person holdng two mportant postons such as these wll undoubtedly remeded before the present semester s happened. Hopefully they wll be. nfluence both organzatons n the same too far gone. The Entertanment Commttee as well as other groups who secure drecton. There should be an attempt made to place dfferent persons n dfferent postons. otherwse t wll be representatve of student tastes and campus entertanment should be more unavodable that all entertanment wll be atttudes. Both the loyal opposton Democrats and some members of Nxon s own Republcan party have become dsgruntled wth Nxon s treatment of Congress. Ths sesson s shapng up to be a battle between advocates of a strong executve branch and those who favor a more equtable dstrbuton of powers between the executve and legslatve branches of government. In recent years, Congress has abdcated a great deal of ts authorty to the executve branch. Snce the Johnson admnstraton Congress has found tself left further and further out n the cold as far as ts lawmakng functon has been concerned. Rchard Nxon has treated Congress as a lesser partner by consstently gnorng the wshes of the Senate and House of Representatves. V The present admnstraton has mpounded funds allocated by Congress for hghway mprovement as well as funds earmarked for ecologcal purposes on the grounds that the spendng of these funds would contrbute to the present nflatonary nature of the naton s economy. By mpoundng these funds, Nxon has dsregarded the wshes of the most representatve branch of the US. government, the US. Congress. The conduct of the Vetnam War snce Nxon s successful re-electon campagn has also aroused a large degree of dscontent n Congress. The war promses to be a pont of contnung frcton between the Presdent and Congress. The Watergate affar also promses to rase some Congressonal eyebrows. Senator Sam van, the senor Senator from NC, s headng the Congressonal nvestgaton of the affar, and Ervn s a strong advocate of the resezure of Congressonal powers. The effect of the Congressonal desre to recover some of ts lost powers, n company wth the "ontnung war, and the nvestgaton of Wa gate s yet to be seen, but there are rumblngs of dscontent comng from Captol Hll. Ths sesson of Congress seems determned to regroup ts lost powers and once agan exert ts rghtful power upon the Amercan governmental system. EARLIER THAT MORNING, Natonal Guard battalons from across the entre state representng the eastern, central, and western regons of North Carolna, pad trbute and executed mltary honors at the Executve Manson for Governor Robert W. Scott who at that moment had lttle more than one hour remanng n offce. Followng that, Scott and Holshouser proceeded together to the State Captol from the Manson n a caravan of whte cars consstng of the Governor, Governor-elect, Ueutenant-governor-elect, and the Councl of Jesse Rae Scott and Pat Holshouser accompaned ther husbands throughout the day. After the nauguraton was a two-hour parade down Fayettevlle Street. Mr. and Mrs. Scott, and Governor and Mrs. Holshouser occuped specal seats n a revewng stand located n front of the Wake County Courthouse. Scott who chomped on a cgar and attred hmself wth a top hat and long coat, commented after the parade, It looks lke I'm gong to have to cut some frewood tonght. Dave Buckey was thrust nto the lmelght because of an njury to All-ACC quarterback Bruce Shaw and responded wth a magnfcent performance that earned hm the Clnt Castleberry Award as the game s outstandng offensve player. BUT BUCKEY was not the only star for the Wolfpack not by a long shot. The rest of the offense that has set so many records durng the season exploded n the second half for 35 ponts after beng held at bay durng the openng half.
