A televson specal featurng the LBC students mnstry to the boat people wll be shown on the weekend of March 11. When one member of Thomas Road Baptst Church, Lynchburg, saw the un-edted flm, he wept, "m glad 1 gave to help those people lve." The televson specal shows a Chrstan woman on. the boat prayng. "We were the answer to her prayers," the Lynchburg resdent sad. Last Chrstmas 20 members from the Old-Tme Gospel Hour mnstered n the refugee camps of South East Asa and worked on the mercy shp n the South Chna Sea. n the refugee camps of Thaland, they fed 27,000 people, gave out 10,000 blankets, 10,000 Bbles and over 30,000 toys to the refugees from Communsm. They preached the gospel and passed out tracts tellng the Chrstmas story. At one camp over a thousand hands were rased to receve Chrst after the gospel was preached. Ths vast project, costng hundreds of thousands of dollars, was made possble because Dr. Jerry Falwell had asked the lsteners of the Old-Tme Gospel Hour to fnancally help support the project. As the team was leavng the Unted States, another crses developed. Dr. Larry Ward of Food for the Hungry told Dr. Falwell how thousands of Vetnamese were beng lost at sea. These were also refugees fleeng Communsm n small boats. Dr. Falwell sent an urgent appeal for fnances to hs lsteners. They agan responded and money was rased to repar the mercy shp, The Bamboo Cross, a 200-foot boat. The gfts from the vewers made possble the repars and outfttng for one month at sea. Rev. Roseoe Brewer, mssons drector of Thomas Road Baptst A rally to "brng Amercans together" s scheduled n Washngton Aprl 27, sponsored by Thomas Road Baptst Church and Lberty Baptst Schools. Dr. Jerry Falwell, pastor of Thomas Road, one of the natons fve largest churches, and chancellor of Lberty Baptst College, s callng upon Fundamental Chrstan Amercans to jon n the Washngton gatherng. "We are plannng for thousands of secondary and college students to jon Chrstans to stand up for Amercas good," Dr. Falwell sad. Many government and poltcal leaders wll partcpate n the twohour event on the Captol steps. Accordng to Nelson Keener, admnstratve assstant to Dr. Falwell, all the students of Lberty Baptst Schools wll be bused to Washngton. The LBC Chorale, EnPsalms and other muscal organzatons wll perform. "We want the naton to know that Chrstans are planly aganst aborton, sexual permssveness n the Amercan socety and that publc textbooks ought to educate and not to nfltrate the mnds of our young people wth perverted teachngs," Keener sad. Refugee begs for help. When the boat developed boler trouble, the students crawled nto the boler On ther frst mornng n the area where refugees are located, the team got ther frst glmpse of the boat people. Eghty-eght people were crowded on a small 30-foot boat. The refugees were out of water, fuel and mlk for the babes. The LBC students were able to gve them The rally s not lmted to Vrgnans. THE DOOR TO CHNA Blessngs Come From Tyranncal System By ROSCOE BREWER When Presdent Carter announced a new relatonshp for the Unted States wth Chna, there were mxed emotons whch crculated through most Chrstan crcles. Some stated, that t was strctly an economc move and dscredted our government by breakng our treaty wth Tawan. No true Amercan could be proud of the fact that we have sold out a frend lke Tawan. However, there are a number of factors about ths new poston wth Chna that Chrstans should consder. Today the largest sngle ethnc bloc of people n the world are n Chna. Her populaton s varously estmated between 800 and 920 mllon, roughly four tmes that of the Unted States. f any trade agreement wll open doors or gve new opportuntes to spread the gospel to ths vast, bulgng populaton, then lets be thankful. For many prevous decades Chna was the focal pont of Chrstan mssonary actvty n the world. n 1949, there were 100 mol. Seven major revolutons protestant mssonares actve there; occurred n Chna n one century. Mllons of dollars were spent n No wonder when Mao came to mssonary ventures. Churches and control he sad, "We have stood up chapels numbered almost 20,000. never agan to be an nsulted Chrstans totaled 1.8 mllon. Then naton." Unfortunately he chose came Mao! For the last 30 years Communsm as a means to acchna has been cut off from the complsh hs natonalstc ends. The bloodbath whch followed s outsde world. There was a reason for Mao grotesquely nsultng to cvlzaton. But Chna s changng. She s beng accepted. Durng the becomng more vsble. There s a nneteenth and twenteth centures Chna experenced deep natonal vgorous government drve to teach humlaton at the hands of foregn Englsh. Materal ncentves are powers...mostly Western. Chna beng offered for productvty. preferred to reman a cvlzaton Managers are agan managng and unto herself. Her rch economy and students are studyng. Ten thousand self-suffcent populaton merted n students are beng sent abroad to her opnon the rght to refuse trade study. Toursm s open to foregn and assocatons wth others. The travelers. And, perhaps more West dd not understand ths pont mportant, Chna now s recognzed of vew. To them t was by more than 90 countres, conunreasonable and brought about trasted to only 28 n hstorc demands, renforced by Where do all the changes n mltary mght. Almost every major Chna ft nto Gods plan for 20th Western power was nvolved n ths century Chrstans n the Unted States? To begn wth what has been humlaton n one way or another. a closed door for thrty years s now The Grotesque nsult Concdng wth ths was the begnnng to open. Ths wll afford unendng poltcal and socal tur- n the future excellent opportuntes for mssonary actvty. The Chnese government has requested 50,000 school teachers to come and teach Englsh. May God grant that many of them be Chrstans who wll also sow the seeds of the gospel. Secondly, rejoce for the Chrstans n Chna. The expellng of mssonares was the fourth tme a government system attempted to drve out the gospel. t s one thng to get rd of mssonares, t s another to get rd of Almghty God. The church n Chna s alve. Reports from Chnese Chrstans comng out of Chna verfy the evdence of the churchs vtalty. Thrdly, lets gve attenton to tmng. Man dd not close the door to Chna, God dd...and God s openng t. The Bble says, "The kngs heart s n the hand of the Lord, as the rvers of water: he turneth t wthersoever he wll." Ths s Gods tmng, not that of governments. There s a tme to plant, a tme to water and a tme to reap. He s the Lord of the harvest! Communsm was an mposed system upon Chna. t has undermned the ntegrty of personal thought and forced people nto a mold. t has destroyed mutual trust of famles and socety. As n Laos and Camboda t destroyed the famlar. t has taught people to hate, dstrust and accept athesm. However, wth ths tyranncal system has come blessng. Tradtons, ancestor worshps, supersttons and other dverstes have been also destroyed. n one sense Maosm has prepared Chna for Chrstanty. As Chrstans we cannot agree wth the way our government has treated Tawan, but prase God for the possbltes whch may come for evangelzaton n Chna. The door s openng. Are we ready? (Mr. Brewer s drector of mssons of Thomas Road Baptst Church and coordnates an energetc and commtted program of worldwde mssonary servce through the TRBC and Lberty Baptst College.) The Baby May Lve After Swm Across The Mekong Vang Kong swam the Mekong Rver from Communst Laos to free Thaland wth hs three-month-old brother ted to hs back. When Mssons Drector Roscoe Brewer showed Vang K6ng on natonal televson, many were concerned because the baby had a hackng cough. He looked better, hs eyes were not swollen, and the open sores on hs head were gone. Mssons Drector Roscoe Brewer sad, "m gong to get Amercans to pray for Vang and hs brother, 1 beleve God has somethng specal for these boys."

3 JM MOON journal champon edtoral FEBRUARY 23, 1979 What Can Chrstan Schools Accomplsh? The nternal Revenue Servce s stll pushng a proposed regulaton to deny tax exempton to Chrstan Schools that cannot prove themselves nnocent of dscrmnatng polces. f ths regulaton becomes effectve, Chrstan Schools would have to prove themselves nnocent by: Enrollng 20 percent of mnorty chldren from the local area, developng a recrutment program amed at mnortes, «recrutng and hrng a percent of mnorty teachers, regardless of ther fath, «" mantanng a defnte percent of mnorty staff members. Ther purpose s not.to ntegrate the prvate Chrstan schools, because most of them already have mnorty chldren enrolled and most of the churches whch own the Chrstan school have accepted members from the mnortes, especally the Black communty. The RS s pushng a program of government control over prvate educaton. The clear ssue s the lberty of churches and the freedom of parents to educate ther chldren accordng to ther relgous.convcton. The RS s wrong on thteeac-" counts. Frst, the Supreme Court. has made "quotas" an llegal test for ntegraton. Second, aj5gress*)s\. responsble to formulate tre laws 6T the land. Here, government em. t :. s ployees who work for the RS arc formulatng laws to prohbt the freedom of ctzens. Thrd, the Frst Amendment of the Consttuton guarantees the separaton of Church and State. Yet, the RS wants to determne the functon of a church and control the educaton of ts young. The RS s pushng a regulaton that s unconsttutonal, expensve and unnecessary. t s denyng another lberty that s our "unalenable rght" guaranteed to all ctzens. Perhaps the underlyng strategy s to crpple the Chrstan school movement. Already, the educatonal level of the prvate school s much hgher than the publc schools. The pupls from Chrstan schools are dscplned, respectful, and competatve. They are creatve, but most of all, they are clean. They score hgher on the standardzed test. n essence, the Chrstan schools- arc an cmbarassment to the publc school. Several yejjfs ago a-- based TV host on a talk show asked," "What can you expect to accomplsh n the Chrstan school? Jn comparson to -the publc school, your teachers are hot well pad, your lbrares do not have^g, many books, your buldng* ate not as modem, your scence laboratores do not have enough equjjftjfenf,: your students dp not have a gym, football feld or swmmng pool and your equpment s out of date." The host thought he had me trapped. He made the Chrstan schools look nferor. was on lve TV and felt needed to answer the crtcsm. prayed for gudance, and repled: "The pupls n our Chrstan schools can accomplsh the same thng as the founders of ths naton. They walked to school, shared text books wth one another, sat next to a wood stove for heat and never heard of cafeteras, gyms, or swmmng pools. Ther teachers had margnal educatons and ther equpment was probably a smple stool and desk. They had nothng but a belef n God and a hunger for truth. And these founders of our naton, who came from schools that arc smlar to our Chrstan schools, bult the greatest naton n the hstory of manknd. "They carved a cvlzaton out of a wlderness. They defeated the great Brtsh empre Jo gan ther freedom. They wrote the greatest document,, that gave the greatest freedom, to the greatest amount of people n the hstory of manknd." "They gave us the Consttuton and the Bll of Rghts. And the chldren who attend the Chrstan schools today can do the same as the founders of our naton, because they are gettng the same qualty of educaton." ":$ HARRY COVERT We Need To Be Of Servce Our correspondent, the Rev. George A. Wagner, ponts out n hs letter that "we feel the call and need to be of servce now more than ever," How sad t s that so often n our Chrstan servce, we beleve that age makes a dfference. What s t that makes our labors not n van? What s t that makes us reman steadfast even though our lves have been touched by a tragedy? What s t that causes us to always abound n the work of the Lord? f we look only at what has just happened and not why t has happened we could he overwhelmed by the crcumstance. God s too lovng, too knd, too all knowng to ever allow anythng to happen n our lves that s not for our good. When someone s sck and n the hosptal why dd God allow ths? One nght had been called to the hosptal late to vst someone and by mstake entered the wrohg room, thought. As 1 excused Do Rght Because of Character One of the greatest needs n our modern church s people of character. Webster defnes t as moral consttuton. A man of character docs the rght thng at the rght place at the rght tme for the rght reason. A man of character lves by the laws of God, rather than by hs feelngs. He docs not look at the crcumstances to determne the best alternatve for hs lfe, he makes decsons based On prncple. A frend sad to me, "ll help you f you tell me the truth." answered, "ll tell the truth even f you dont help me." have made up my mnd to be truthful. Character s not the same as sprtualty. A person becomes sprtual by lettng the Holy Sprt control our lfe and servce. To become more sprtual, the Chrstan yelds hmself to allow the Sprt to flow through hm. A person becomes sprtual nstantaneously. A new babe n Chrst can be sprtual and can be used of God mmedately. But God can only use hm accordng to the lmtatons of hs character. But character s ganed slowly and gudes a person through dffcult tmes. Character s formed by habt. The greatest asset of a Chrstan s parents who made hm (Hurry Covert, managng edtor of the Journal-Champon, has been a journalst for 22 years. He has been a frequent contrbutor to varous Chrstan publcatons.) Conduct sad: Do all the good you can n all the ways you can n all the places you can At all the tmes you can To all the people you can As long as ever you can Stated another way, "Be steadfast, unmoveable, always aboundng n the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor s not n van n the Lord." (Dr. Moon s co-pastor of Thomas Road Baptst Church, a poston he has flled for many years. He s one of the natons outstandng pastors, preachers and teachers.) ELMER TOWNS Also, snce sprtualty can be ganed mmedately, t can be lost just as quckly. Rebellon or gnorance wll destroy a persons usefulness. As Chrstans we need sometmes to look around and see just where God would send us. The msson feld snt just a foregn naton. t could be next door, across the street, across the state or n your own famly. One of the tremendous opportuntes presented n servng ths newspaper of the Thomas Road Baptst Church Mnstres s to present the facts to one and all, to let God use the words on these pages to nspre and actvate Chrstans, young and old, to reach the world. How often ve wrtten the words to tell the world the story of Jesus, to be wllng to allow Hm to use us and yet, we must keep up the pace of reportng the news for Chrstan Amerca and report the Good News over and over agan. can thnk of many Chrstans whoahaye served the Lord for years and years and today, as they near the number of threescore and 10, they are more "on fre" for Hm today than ever before. One of the good thngs about the publshng busness s the chance to meet well-known personaltes, those natonal Chrstans whose converson stores have made a dfference n thousands of lves. But somehow, 1 stll get a warm feelng to know that there are thousands of people whose lves wth the Lord are exctng and thrllng and that the testmones of ther lves are known only to ther grocers, cleaners and gas staton attendants. n our zeal to evangelze the world, lets not forget those nearest us. myself and started to leave a man who was a patent asked, "Are you a preacher?" "Yes," repled. "Could you talk to me for a few mnutes?" As sat down and we began to talk realzed God had brought us together for a reason. He was not saved and was watng for someone to tell hm how to be saved. What a joy flooded my soul as we read the Bble and prayed together and he trusted Jesus as hs personal Savour. Just a short tme later that man ded but untl the day the Lord took hm home he told people what had happened that nght n the hosptal. Was our labor n van? No, because now someone s n Heaven because they heard of Gods Amazng Grace and how t can transform lves. Romans 8:28 works. All thngs do work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called accordng to Hs purpose. John Wesley, n hs Rules of do rght as a chld. When a young person s forced to honor hs word, s s learnng to be trustworthy. Men wthout character do not become transformed nto men of godly habts at salvaton. (They become new creatures n Chrst and are gven a new nature). Character takes tranng, and ths takes tme. f character has not been acqured as a chld, the person must learn t after salvaton. One of the purposes of a Chrstan college s to nculcate character by enforcng rules. The more a student practces rghteousness, the easer t wll be to lve rght when he enters fulltme Chrstan servce. When a Chrstan does not pay hs blls, t s not because he s not surrendered to God, t s a lack of character. When a person les about hs Sunday School attendance, t s a lack of character. Character nvolves workng hard, usng tme wsely, managng money and keepng ones contracts. But some crtcze that any emphass on character tranng s legalsm. They clam we are only makng people obey rules, whch s pharseesm. Men of character do not let ther feelngs control ther lfe, they lve by prncples. When thngs go wrong, some people become depressed or go nto emotonal desntegraton. That s lvng by emotons, rather than lookng to your prncples to solve the problem. A mans character s not measured by the peaks n hs lfe, any one can rse wth the crcumstances. A mans character s measured by hs valleys, he wll reman stable when crcumstances collapse. Sprtualty s necessary for nothng f accomplshed wthout the Holy Sprt workng through us. But, character s also necessary. f the Holy Sprt empowers a man who wll not work, nor has learned to work, t stll s sanctfed ncompetence. We need men of character who wll do the rght thng, at the rght tme, n the rght way; then the Holy Sprt wll work through hm. (Dr. Towns, who serves as edtor of the Journal-Champon, s one of the natons leadng Chrstan wrters and preachers.) CHARLES R. CADE Pesos-Dollars Just a few days ago, 28 members of the Old-Tme Gospel Hour mnstry vsted Mexco Cty n a transcultured mssonary effort mplemented by Thomas Road Baptst Churchs mssonary arm, SMTE. Even though the trp concded wth the vst of Pope John Paul and was to be followed n a week.by Presdent Carters abortve msson, most of us were so entranced by the beauty and majesty of The Ctys dynamc culture that the exctement n the ar was thought to be unque to our specal group, not somethng specal. But hnd sghts perfect vson revealed that our people were buffeted by the emotonal wnds of a people who were just begnnng to realze that someone had gven them the keys to Fort Knox. The ncense that enrched the atmosphere, though on the other sde of the world, was rans retreat nto the paralyss of medeval relgon whch was sure to ncrease the value of Erratum: Correctum Dear bdtor: You lsted Governor-elect Clement of Tennesse n your Dec. 8, 1978 edton, when Lamar Alexander was he Governor-elect. Phl Harper, Attorney, CA Murfreesboro, TN (Edtors Noe: Our mstake ws not the Governor-elects name, bn hs state. The reference was O Governor-elect Clement of Texas.) Mexcos black gold. The hard facts were that abundant ol resources, such as recently found n Mexco, equal enormous wealth and fantastc power among the famly of natons. Thus, before 1979 was eght weeks old, the head of the worlds largest property owner, the Roman Catholc Church, and the leader of the most energy dependent and greatest materal producer n the world, the Unted States, pad ther respects n the most populous cty n the world, Mexco Cty. Part of the Thomas Road Baptst Church was there to experence such heavy stuff. And what dd they see? They saw lterally thousands upon multpled thousands who were wthout a true knowledge of Jesus Chrst. They saw thousands upon multpled thousands gong about ther daly busness as n the days of Noah when all men relaxed n ther selfsuffcency even to the pont of mockng those who professed a need for the true God. The SMTE team observed that same dangerous ndependence n Mexco. Men rushed from pont to pont, workng out ther exstence. Perhaps the most remarkable feelng among the group, although not clearly realzed at the tme, was the observaton that Gods presence was felt n our teams humble clents but tha He was eonspeouslv absent n so much of the actvty around us. t was so basc and smple that t mght have gone unnotced bn tor the Holy Sprts lght on Cornthans 1:27. Hs challenge was "Delght yourself n the Lord, and He shall gve thee the desres of thy heart." Hs prayer was "Lord, send forth laborers, - those who wll be wllng to learn to delght themselves n you." That s exactly what Jack Wyrtzen has spent the past 40 years dong - delghtng hmself n the Lord. Physcan Studes For Mnstry mando got hs ted -n,relgous m to go wth, sparks. Armandos father clearly dd not want the famly to attend the Baptst church. Sad Armando: "He was used to gvng orders and expected to be obeyed, snce he was n the medcal servce of the (Mexcan) army. He tred every way magnable to keep us out of the Baptst church. He would punsh us when we would go or take us on trps on Sundays." Armandos father prayed to receve Chrst at Chrstmastme, "You can magne our joy n havng our famly crcle complete and real peace for the frst tme n years," Armando sad. Snce that tme, the father has contnued to grow n grace; he not only attends the Baptst church regularly, but now s a deacon. Early n Armandos Chrstan experence he had felt Gods call to go nto fulltme Chrstan work. Yet, almost from the start, he. was advsed aganst dong anythng but contnung hs studes. Even Bruce Bell, who had led hm to Chrst, told hm that "Gods ways are many, and the Lord does not want only shepherds." t was a call that seemed to get stronger and stronger. Yet the young natonal obeyed hs advsers and entered the unversty, followng n hs fathers footsteps somewhat by studyng medcne. He got hs M.D. and left the unversty n He then prayed "Lord, what would you lke for me to do?" Snce he dd not get an mmedate answer, Armando contnued hs work as a physcan n a clnc. He also served hs church as youth drector. Yet the drve was too strong to overcome. He had to serve the Lord fulltme, and that probably would mean leavng Mexco for a tme to get an advanced Bble educaton. "t was a decson had to make: would work for me and make money, or would work for the Lord?" Armando dd somethng smlar to "layng out a fleece before the Lord." n Mexco, only one day per year s a specal tme when natonals who wsh to leave the country must take a medcal test. When the day came, 18,000 took the test, and only 2,000 passed. Though Armando was n perfect health, he prayed to God, "f you want me to work for you, then must not pass the test." And, by a techncalty, he dcr.t. When the newspaper publshed the names of those who passed the test, though Armandos name was supposed to be ncluded, t wasnt. Sad Dr. Guzman: "Because of that, 1 knew was supposed to work for the Lord, but dd not know how." One month later, he dd know how. He was readng some lterature from hs church and learned of some hosptals n other countres. "From readng ths the Lord showed me that my work was to be a mssonary doctor." The techncalty about the medcal test was cleared up. At the same tme Armando began to wrte varous Chrstan colleges n the Unted States to send hm nformaton on ther programs. He also asked about the possblty of gettng a scholarshp. Some colleges answered hm by statng he could attend ther nsttuton f he would pay one to two years tuton n advance. Armando then proceeded to sell hs car; that gave hm enough money to travel to the Unted States, but t left only enough for one semester ol educaton once he got here., \,. \ 1 ( 1, t (

6 FEBRUARY 23, 1979 JOURNAL CHAMPON 5 UNQUE BLACK U.S. MSSONARY Ed Gomes Approved By S B M Ed Gomes, a 1976 graduate of Lberty Baptst College, has been approved as a mssonary by Strategc Baptst Msssons, mssons board of Thomas Road Baptst Church. n a meetng Feb. 7, Gomes told the mssons commttee, " want to mnster to Black Amerca n a unque way." Because he wll be travelng among churches, he needed a recognzed organzaton such as Strategc Baptst Mssons as hs sponsor. Also, because hs mnstry wll be new to Black churches, he feels the offerngs wll not support hs endeavors, therefore, Gomes wants the endorsement of a mssons board to rase fnancal support on a contnung bass. After graduatng from LBC, Gomes worked for two years wth the Lfe-Acton team. There he saw the n-depth nfluence of a teachngsngng-dscplnng mnstry. He plans to go back nto Black churches wth a team of young people and conduct nghtly meetngs that wll teach and mnster on dfferent levels of needs. Youth Aflame Teams Vst Florda For Prep Campagns The Youth Aflame Outreach teams of Thomas Road Baptst Church agan showed ther versatlty and adaptablty ths week as two teams canvassed central Florda durng an extensve nne-day campagn. The campagn was sponsored and drected by Orlandos chapter of Youth for Chrst. YFCs goal was to frmly establsh ther Campus Lfe clubs on the publc school campuses and to establsh an "open door" polcy between school admnstrators and YFC staff members. These goals were successfully met last week as YA teams sang 11 concerts n sx hgh schools and two junor hgh schools. They were enthusastcally receved by both students and school offcals. Along wth standng nvtatons to "come back anytme," many school prncpals expressed amazement that Youth Aflames program held the attenton of the students. One teacher remarked, "You held them! dont know how you dd t, but you held them!" Whle fllng ther days wth school assembles, Youth Aflame flled ther nghts wth church mnstres. They mnstered n regular church servces, youth explosons, and detenton homes. The results were fantastc - there were 23 young people saved n the detenton center alone. The culmnaton of the week was the Saturday nght Pzza Blast, held at the YFC Audtorum. Over 450 young people came to eat free pzza and hear YA sng agan. Ther appettes had been whetted by YAs presentaton n ther school and they came, hungry for pzza and the gospel. Before the nght was over, each student heard the gospel and 13 made publc salvaton decsons for Chrst. So, even though the outlook was snowy and dreary at YAs home base n Lynchburg ths week, marvelous thngs were happenng down n sunny Florda. "Gomes dd not even menton hs basketball fame on hs applcaton. Why?" " want you to approve me based on the wll of God, not on my basketball reputaton," repled Gomes. Mssons Drector, Roscoe Brewer, noted that Gomes had put that part of hs lfe behnd hm and now wants to serve Jesus Chrst. Hs wfe Ruth has a BA from Framngham State College and a Masters degree n nteror Desgn from ndana State Unversty. She was saved as a chld, beng rased n a mnsters home. They have no chldren. Ruth and Ed are members of the Manna Bble Baptst Church n Baltmore, Md. Ther pastor s the popular "Preacher Brown" who has preached at Thomas Road Baptst Church. Present at the Strategc Baptst Mssons meetng n addton to Brewer and Rogers, were Dr. Elmer Towns, Dr. Sumner Wemp and Rev. Don Norman. The approval of Gomes does not mean that he wll get hs fnancal support from Thomas Road Baptst Church. t means he s approved to approach other churches to solct funds, just as any canddate from another msson board mght do. The approval of Mr. and Mrs. Gomes brngs the total to seven of the canddates and mssonares approved by Strategc Baptst Mssons. Ed Gomes He wants to help teach famles the New Testament pattern of lvng, a desperate need n the Black communty. Also, he wants to reach the Black youth and help dscple them for Jesus Chrst. They plan to lve n the homes of church members so they can make a maxmum mpact on lves. Ed Gomes was an outstandng basketball player at LBC and one of the most recognzed students on campus. George W. 8 FEBRUARY JOURNAL CHAMPON Women Cagers Face Clnch Valley The Lberty Baptst College womens basketball team faced a tough battle aganst Clnch Valley College n the Appalachan Conference recently. Gong nto the game, Clnch Valley boasted an average of 88 ponts per game whle LBCs squad averaged 56 ponts per game. Coach Lnda Farver reported she., knew t would be possble for Cljtnch Valley to score a record number of ponts. But, the Lady Flames would not st back and be pawns for the Wse, Va., collegate powerhouse. Although the game ended wth Clnch Valley wnnng, 71-53, the Flames were n contenton untl the last part of the game. LBC s now 1515 on the season. Jefferson Forest Hgh Schools gym was the scene of the acton and the game was played before 1,800 fans, the largest crowd ever to wtness a basketball game at the hgh school. There was no doubt that Longwood came to play, seekng revenge lor a 12-pont loss suffered earler n the season. The Flames came back wth a furous rally as they cut Longwooods lead to one pont, 7978, wth 53 seconds to play. Hope was hgh as the Lancers two top scorers, fouled out of the game and Longwood coach Ron Bash decded to play four forwards n an effort to keep possesson. Two fouls by LBC sealed the game at Longwood s now 16-7 on the season. Longwood had a deadly 69.4 feld goal average to a 47.8 average for the Flames. The Lancers also held the edge n rebounds Saturdays game marked the end of an era for Flames basketball as the team has played ts last game n the Jefferson Forest Hgh School. The team has moved to the new gymnasum on Lberty Mountan as the team preapres for next weeks NCCAA dstrct competton. THE SHOOTNG FLAME Ed Vckers has been scorng a lot of ponts for the Flames n recent games. n the LBC-Bluefeld State basketball game Vckers produced 40 ponts on the evenng. The very next game he scored 45 ponts aganst St. Pauls College of Lawrencevlle, Va., and establshed a new school record for the most ponts n a sngle game. LBC statstcans dont keep a record for the most ponts n two successve games, f they dd Ed Vckers 85 ponts would be a record hard to beat. A lot of basketball fans know who Ed s but probably a lot of readers havent had an opportunty to get to know hm. Messahs Boyer defeated LBCs Ruben Escombedo n the heavyweght contest. The Flames advanced to the NCCAA fnals to be held at Baptst Bble College Feb Tom Dowlng Tells Busnessmen LBC Attracts Top Players Coach Tom Dowlng of Lberty Baptst College s lookng for football players who look to Jesus Chrst as ther "Head Coach." "Why s that mportant? "Youve got to wn n the game of lfe. There are only two teams n ths game, but the team that wns s the team wth J»5SU,s Chrst as ts Head Coach," the bg leader of LBCs varsty football team says..^tle seems to be fndng them, oo. Much of the football coachng taffs off-season tme s spent n ecrutng and recently LBC has jbffered scholarshps to born-agan jathletes who would other wse have jjfeone to more establshed schools. put, because they wanted to serve the Lord as well as play football, jthey chose LBC. Dowlng joked about hs ^recrutng technques when he spoke fbefore a crowd of about 100 at the ^monthly meetng of the Chrstan ^Busness and Professonal Mens /Assocaton n Lynchburg Feb. 16. He sad he has prospectve LBC jathletes fll out a recrutng form. j-on one form, he notced one of the hgh school senors, n answerng 2the blank "Hobby," wrote n, J "Hurtng people." "Now thats my knd of athlete! 11 sure want to get hm!" Dowlng 3 2 laughed. Of course, gettng such an * athlete mght be dffcult. For one! thng, the same athlete who wrote n "hurtng people" for hs hobby also $ dentfed hs "church preference" as "red brck." When t came to fllng n hs ".Q.," he put "20 20." He was so dumb, Dowlng sad, he got a "D" n "lunch." Nonetheless, there are some very promsng young athletes n hgh * schools across the country who are serously consderng LBC. One jj man whp stuck out n Dowlngs 1 mnd had a choce of a scholarshp 5 at North Carolna Unversty, LBC, j< and three or four other schools. He ultmately pcked N.C. State, but? LBC was hs second preference. Sports Ambassadors Announces 1979 Sports, Schedule SANTA CLARA, Calf. (EP)Sports Ambassadors, the mpact mnstry of Overseas Crusades, plans to send out 12 teams - 8 basketball, 2 baseball and 2 soccer to mnster n Asa, Afrca and South Amerca, ths year. Ths wll be sports Ambassadors 28th year of takng the Gospel to foregn lands through ths unque and somewhat unorthodox way of reachng out. Through lterature, publc testmony at the games, and wtness as they play, these 160 Chrstan athletes wll touch the lves of countless thousands ths summer. 7 But recrutng tor next year s only one part of the LBC off-season football story. Another part - and ths nvolves team members as well as coaches -- s schedulng ralles at local schools and showng them what a team wth Jesus Chrst as ts Head Coach does. Ths second functon helps answer a crtcsm whch many have, namely, "How can you be a Chrstan and vcously fght and tackle other people at the same tme, as n a football game?" Well, frst of all, you dont consder wnnng one lttle football game as all-mportant, Dowlng says. Vou consder nfntely more mportant wnnng that "game of lfe." And secondly, you ntroduce your Head Coach, Jesus Chrst, to the opposng team. When the LBC players travel to other schools n the Lynchburg area, they offer a specfc program. So far, every school whch LBC has approached has accepted the offer and nvted the Flames to come n wth ther program. The LBC players set up actvtes such as playng the hgh school faculty n football or maybe have some weght-lftng marathons, but then, the Flames, under Dowlngs drecton, put on a specal program as well, one whch contans preachng and evangelsm. Dowlng told the Chrstan busnessmen that Paul Anderson, the so-called "strongest man alve," once sad, "The most mportant thng n my lfe s not wnnng the Olympc gold medal, not beng called the strongest man n the world, but the most mportant thng n my lfe s beng called a Chrstan." Dowlng, recently selected Coach of the Year by the nternatonal Churchmens Sports Hall of Fame, feels the same way. And he tres to nstll that n hs players. Thus, locker-room wtnessng and "specal programs" to hgh schools are not uncommon n the LBC football experence. Although many look to the day that LBC wll play the Unversty of Notre Dame n football, Dowlng thnks t may never happen. n the frst place, schedules are made at least 20 years n advance, and by that tme, LBC may hot even want to play Notre Dame. The Chrstan Busness and Professonal Mens Assocaton s a A vctory for coach Bob recently formed organzaton Bonhem and hs team would make untng all born-agan offcals n LBC the NCCAA champons for the area for prayer and fellowshp. the thrd consecutve year. Unsaved frends of the busnessmen are also nvted and gven an opportunty to trust Jesus Chrst as ther personal Savour. The group offers a prayer breakfast at 6:45 a.m. every Frday at Howard Johnsons Restaurant. Once a month, the busnessmen get together for a luncheon at Davdsons Famly Dnng (formerly Gramps and Grannys). Three to four tmes a year, a specal evenng prayer banquet s planned. Dr. James O.
