All attempts to capture Madero have proved futle, and he has ssued a proclamaton callng hmself "Presdent of the Provsonal Government of Mexco." He has also admonshed hs followers not to wrong Amercans or other foregners. "Ths movement s drected solely aganst the tyrant Daz," he declared. From San Antono t s learned that Madero completed hs plans for the present outbreak after hs arrval n that cty early n October. He came from Mexco dsgused as a Peon and was mmedately surrounded by revolutonary leaders. At that tme Madlero talked of hs opposton to Daz, but clamed that he was n favor of a peaceful soluton of the trouble. The arms necessary for the revoluton were brought nto Mexco by fordng the Ro Grande on a remote ranch. Just before he left to jon the revolutonsts large shpments of arms to a frend of Madero's were sezed, and t then became known that he was actvely leadng the revolutonsts. A student n the Unversty of Mchgan has just made the rounds of the dfferent places where cgars, tobacco and cgfarettes are sold, and hag found out that students at the unversty last year smoked 132,210 cgars, 33,180 boxes of cgarfettes, 52,000 packages of smokng tobacco, ncludng 30,000 packages of cgarette tobacco; 7,000 packages of cgarette papers and 6,850 cubes of chewng tobacco. class s very small, consstng of about ten men. There are no offcers, and the nstructon s under the supervson of Captan Bookmller. The attendance has been very regular and most of the men take great nterest n the work of the course. As for the progress of the Course A men, rapd advances have been made and drllng wth arms was begun over a week ago. t s not too early to look forward to the prze drll whch comes about the end of the year. Apropos of ths drll, Captan Bookmller says: "The prze drll wll take place as customary near the close of the school year. The best company n the battalon wll be selected, not alone on. ts ablty to drll, but on the condtons of the unform solderly bearng and attendance throughout the year." SECOND CONVOCATON AT HUNTNGTON HALL Pres. Jordan of Leland Stanford to Speak on "The Blood of the Naton." TWO O'CLOCK TODAY. Dr. Jordan, College Presdent for 20 Years, Has Been Holder of Many Offces of Publc Trust. When You Take Part n The Tech Actvty You Not only Help Yourself, But Also Your College, the Greatest nsttuton of ts Knd n the World. The Fr-eshman class ths year s, n one actvty, at least, makng a ratheer unpleasant reutaton for tself. The frst appontments of canddates for the news and busness staff of The Tech takes place wthn the next fortnght, and at present there are a remarkably few number of 1914 men who are takng the usual nterest n ths publcaton. n prevous years the number of Freshmen who reported as canddates for the varous postons on the paper was extremely large and the men took a sncere nterest n the wo'k. Ths year matters are unfortunately dfferent. What s the trouble? We hestate to accuse ths year's ncomng class of poor sprt and a lack of apllrecaton of the opportuntes offered n ths lne. As a matter of fact, The Tech offers a chance to gan the most valuable expeerence. n the news department, for example, the comng nto contact wth promnent men about college and about -he cty as well, cannot fal to be of great value to the average student. n the busness department t s self-evdent that the tranng s exceptonally fne. t brngs one nto drect contact wth leadng busness men of the cty. The regula- offce work also counts heavly n the learnng of )1ractcal busness methods. So, Freshmen, wake ulp! Why should your class be the poorest n ts support of ths, perhaps the leadng actvty of the nsttute Commttee. Come. on. Make the most of ths opportulgty. WRELESS SOCETY ELECTS OFFCERS Frst Meetng of Year Held at Unon on Wednesday Afternoon. E. M. SYMMES, 1911, PRESDENT. Commttees Apponted to Look After the Club's nterests - Plans For Work. that a custodan of nstruments be apponted but the matter vas lad on the table untl the next meetng. t s desred that all men wshng to jon the socety, but who were unable to attend the l resent meetng, should leave ther names at the Cage for Mr. P. L. Flansburg as soon as possble. The number of new men who attended the meetng was partcularly gratfyng to the older members of the socety, and a vgorous and energetc year's work seems assured. The proposed plans wll gve ample opportunty for all the members of the socety to do a large amount of nterestng and valuable work, and to become experenced n the less known, but more mportant, scentfc sde of the subject. At that tme Madero talked of hs opposton to Daz, but clamed that he was n favor of a peaceful soluton of the trouble. The arms necessary for the revoluton were brought nto Mexco by fordng the Ro Grande on a remote ranch. Just before he left to jon the revolutonsts large shpments of arms to a frend of Madero's were sezed, and t then became known that he was actvely leadng the revolutonsts. A student n the Unversty of Mchgan has just made the rounds of the dfferent places where cgars, tobacco and cgfarettes are sold, and has found out that students at the unversty last year smoked 132,210 cgars, 33,180 boxes of cgarfettes, 52,000 packages of smokng tobacco, ncludng 30,000 packages of cgarette tobacco; 7,000 packages of cgarette papers and 6,850 cubes of chewng tobacco. class s very small, consstng of about ten men. There are no offcers, and the nstructon s under the supervson of Captan Bookmller. The attendance has been very regular and most of the men take great nterest n the work of the course. As for the pr-ogress of the Course A men, rapd advances have been made and drllng wth arms was begun over a week ago. t s not too early to look forward to the prze drll whch comes about the end of the year. Apropos of ths drll, Captan Bookmller says: "The prze drll wll take place as customary near the close of the school year. The best company n the battalon wll be selected, not alone on ts ablty to drll, but on the condtons of the unform solderly bearng and attendance throughout the year," There s much n hs remark for the members of the course to ponder over and absorb. SECOND CONVOCATON WRELESS SOCETY AT HUNTNGTON HALL ELECTS OFFCERS - Pres. Jordan of Leland Stanford Frst Meetng of Year Held at to Speak on "The Blood Unon on Wednesday of the Naton." Afternoon. TWO O'CLOCK TODAY. Dr. Jordan, College Presdent for 20 Years, Has Been Holder of Many Offces of Publc Trust. At 2 o'clock today, n Huntngton Hall, the second convocaton of the year wll be held. The speaker wll be Doctor Davd Starr Jordan, Presdent of Leland Stanford Unversty. Dr. Jordan, who s called the Dr. Elot of the West, s one of the country's best known ctzens. He has an M. S. degree from Cornell Unversty, an M. D. from ndana Medcal, a Ph. D. from Butler, and has been awarded When You Take Part n The Tech Actvty You Not only Help Yourself, But Also Your College, the Greatest nsttuton of ts Knd n the World. The Freshman class ths year s, n one actvty, at least, makng a rather unpleasant reputaton for tself. The frst appontments of canddates for the news and busness staff of The Tech takes place wthn the next fortnght, and at present there are a remarkably few number of 1914 men who are takng the usual nterest n ths publcaton. n prevous years the number of Freshmen who reported as canddates for the varous postons on the papel' was extremely large and the men took a sncere nterest n the work. Ths year matters are unfortunately dfferent. What s the trouble? We hestate to accuse ths year's ncomng class of poor sprt and a lack of apprecaton of the opportuntes offered n ths lne. As a matter of fact, The Tech offers a chance to gan the most valuable experence. n the news department, for example, the comng nto contact wth promnent men about college and about the cty as well, cannot fal to be of great value to the average student. n the busness department t s self-evdent that the tranng s exceptonally fne. t brngs one nto drect contact wth leadng busness men of the cty. The regular offce work also counts heavly n the learnng of practcal busness methods. So, Freshmen, wake up! Why should your class be the poorest n ts support of ths, perhaps the leadng actvty of the nsttute Commttee. Come on. Make the most of ths opportunty. E. M. SYMMES, 1911, PRESDENT. Commttees Apponted to Look After the Club's nterests - Plans For Work. The frst meetng of the Wreless Socety of the present year was held Wednesday afternoon n the Unon: A large number of newv men attended, n spte of the fact that the tme of meetng was unavodably set for a somewhat nconvenent hour, the Freshmen havng had drll the hour mmedately precedng, and the Course V men Electrcal Lab. The meetng was called to order by that a custodan of nstruments be apponted but the matter was lad on the table untl the next meetng. t s desred that all men 'wshng to jon the socety, but who were unable to attend the present meetng, should leave ther names at the Cage for Mr. P. L. Flansburg as soon as possble. The number of new men who attended the meetng was partcularly gratfyng to the older members of the socety, and a vgorous and energetc year's work seems assured. The proposed plans wll gve ample opportunty for all the members of the socety to do a large amount of nterestng and valuable work, ant to become experenced n the less known, but more mportant, scentfc sde of the subject. At the Rugby football game between Calforna and Stanford the streets near the campus were conv-erted nto an automoble park, and the machnes of spectators at the game were guarded by sx mounted polcemen.
