Maston A retred professor of Chrsuan Ethcs There may come a tme, for example, when the ndvdual wll have to take a stand even f he has to stand alone. When he reaches the lmts of hs accommodaton, f the majorty votes aganst hm he should accept the decson gracously. He should beware of a martyr complex, of a self-rghteous sprt, or of an atttude of superor enlghtenment. After all, there s at least a possblty that he may be wrong. At least he should react n such a way as to strengthen rather than weaken the fellowshp of the group: church, assocaton, or conventon. He should trust the future for hs vndcaton. "Compromse" s consdered a nasty word by some people. They contend that t reveals a lack of convcton, courage and character. Many tmes n a democracy, poltcal or relgous, no decson can or wll be reached wthout some compromse. An ndvdual or a group, small or large, that s unwllng to compromse or make adjustments wll frequently unnecessarly slow down the decson makng process or even make t mpossble to arrve at a decson. THE SABBA TH RECORDER Takng a look at Ourselves The age of a perodcal such as the Sabbath Recorder does not show lke the age of the people who serve on the edtoral staff or read t throughout ther lfe span. The weght of years does not hang heavy, for the materal wthn ts covers s new every week and much of t, dealng as t does wth the Word of God and the contnung problems of the Chrstan lfe, s ageless. One of the evdences of age and length of servce s the accumulaton of bound volumes. The edtor's offce s not bg enough to hold on ts bookshelves all the volumes of the Sabbath Recorder (although they are all avalable n the buldng for reference). The bound volumes n the workng offce cover about sxty years. f stacked on the floor they would make a lttle tower of books over sxteen feet hgh. The work of the present edtor by comparson s nsgnfcant. The volumes produced under hs sxteen years of edtng stack up to only about two and a half feet. The Sabbath Recorder s not just the normal sxteen pages per week of readng materal; t s also the accumulaton so far of 6,360 weekly ssues, whch s qute a number. The sze and the number of pages has changed consderably up untl recent years, when t has remaned farly constant n spte of mountng costs. The possblty for our publcaton to reman alve whle so n any others have faled les larg~ n the loyalty of past and present Seventh Day Baptsts. Were t not for the wllngness of our people to subsdze extensvely the weekly that does so much for the cause the Sabbath Recorder would have long snce ceased to exst - and n all probablty there would have been a sharp declne n membershp because of ts ceasng to serve. At the tme of the centennal ssue n 1944 the prntng cost of the Sabbath Recorder was budgeted at $6,000. At the present tme t s budgeted at nearly $20,000, not ncludng specal ssues. The subscrpton prce then was $2.50 now only $4. Costs other than prntng have advanced somewhat as wages have crept up wth the changng economy. Wth 3

costs more than three tmes{ what they were at our looth annversa~ and subscrpton prces not even doubled t s evdent that the benefts gven to subscrbers are not pad drectly by the subscrbers. However, the ncome from subscrptons s now' estmated at $4,600, compared wth $2,500 n The number of subscrbers s approxmately the same even though the potental number then would appear to have been larger. Church membershp n 1944 was lsted as 6,428, now 5,623. Thus n the past twenty-fve years the denomnatonal weekly has attracted a much larger proporton of Seventh Day Baptsts as subscrbers. t would appear that when the membershp grows the Sabbath Recorder, by present tendences, may more than keep pace wth that growth. n the past sxteen years has come more nflaton of costs than n the earler part of the quarter century. For example, the prntng costs advanced from $6,000 to only $8,275 between 1944 and Now those costs have clmbed "to nearly $20,000. t has been possble to hold the prmary edtoral costs to a fgure just a lttle hgher than sxteen years ago. How has the Tract Socety, whch publshes the Sabbath Recorder, been able to make the perodcal avalable at so lttle extra cost? By devotng more of ts nvestment ncome to ths area of servce and drawng more heavly on the denomnatonal gfts of our people through the Our World Msson budget. How brght s the future? The famlar beautful answer that should ft the Sabbath Recorder as well as any other Chrstan work s, "as brght as the promses of God." t s evdent that we wll have to clam some of those promses f our perodcal s to accomplsh ts full msson n the years ahead. Publshng costs wll contnue to rse. Edtor costs wll probably have to be hgher when there s a change of edtors, unless there are two ncomes n the famly. One can magne a number of uncertantes. Our predcton, however, s that wth the manfest ncrease n dedcaton of our young people and ther greater nterest n denomnatonal work there wll be an ncreasng demand for 4 f the servce that ths journal can render. Standng at a crossroads of socal ferment, as we are, the Sabbath Recorder can be a strong stablzng force and an aggressve leader of constructve thought. t can bnd together the people of lke fath n ths country and serve as the chef medum of communcaton wth the growng number of conferences n the Seventh Day Baptst World Federaton. As to Queen Esther of old t may be sad of our paper, "Who knoweth whether thou art come to the kngdom for such a tme as ths?" Thngs New <tllfnd ODd We stand at a new juncture of hstory ths summer. Thngs new and old seem to be n a dfferent relaton to each other -n some respects a thrllng relaton. From the earlest tmes men have looked speculatvely and lovngly at the largest heavenly body other than the blazng sun. Now two men have stepped lghtly, bouncngly on ts barren surface. They successfully accomplshed ther hstorc. msson, lnked ther lttle spacecraft wth an orbtng command module and returned to earth wth samples of moon materal. Some have sad that the romance of the moon has ended and that ts future wll be dull. Perhaps so; we shall see. A labor unon, Communcatons Workers of Amerca, has just launched a small publcaton to nfluence publc opnon. The newsletter n ts July edton, (Vol. 1, No.2) comments on Apollo 11, sayng that t ntates the most dramatc communcatons breakthrough n hstory. Therv s truth n t. Nell Armstrong's frst steps.. on the moon were televsed to a worldwde audence. n many other respects ths trp to the moon and back s ~. "" trumph n communcatons. Probably nothng ever happenng before has been sa'; unversally known at the tme of ts happenng. The moon tself may from now on be "old stuff," but the prnted page and other means of communcaton always have somethng new; they are not old stuff, for they tell to nterested people the new thngs they want to hear. ncdentally, communcatons from an- other world, from heaven tself are not new. Forgettng for the moment all the revelatons of God n the Old Testament, we recall that a flamng star, lke a rocket, guded the wse men to the place where angelc hosts had announced the brth of the Son of God. Almost more amazng s the voce from heaven comng to earth three tmes durng the mnstry of Chrst, "Ths s my beloved son, hear hm." Agan, there was the vsble ascent to heaven of the rsen Lord and a voce comng from the clouds to the wonderng dscples promsng that ths same Jesus would come agan. No, heavenly communcatons are not new. Nether s the need to communcate ether new or old ~ t s constant. Methods may change and new words may need to be spoken. Do the events clusterng around the total flght of Apollo 11 have any relaton to the 125th annversary commemoratve ssue of the Sabbath Recorder, the denomnatonal organ of Seventh Day Baptst churches, whch began to emphasze the seventh-day Sabbath message of the Bble three and a half centures ago? Well, the Sabbath Recorder has reached a sgnfcant mlestone n ts msson of communcaton. How many secular or relgous publcatons rse and fall wthn one generaton! The perspectve of the many generatons that have come and gone n a century and a quarter can n a measure be clamed and bult upon by those' responsble for the content of ths publcaton at ths pont n the msson of Seventh Day Baptsts. f Apollo 11 represents n 1969 a breakthrough n communcatons, as the wrters of CW A contend, t may well be sad that our medum of communcaton wth our readers also stands at a crucal pont n Seventh Day Baptst lfe. Can we be as enthusastc n forward-lookng artcles as we are fathful n recordng the exctng thngs that have happened? We beleve ths s possble wth the help of all. t s not our busness to overemphasze the past nor to preserve as a sacred cow the status quo. We must emphasze the truths that have stood the test of tme, magnfy the good of the present, and communcate accordng to our ablty the nsghts of our best thnkers as they apply the Scrptures to the emergng future. We clam no specal revelaton of ho\v God s gong to work n the years ahead. N ether can we tell how He wll lead present or future edtors. We can pray for day-by-day llumnaton and gudance, hopng that the years to come wll judge that our perodcal has been fathful and senstve, that t has been wllng to espouse unpopular causes when the Word of God clearly ndcates that they are rght causes. Communcaton of the wll of God and the work of Hs people s our busness. "t: Congratulatons From the Amercan Baptst Conventon Rev. Leon M. 5 . ;./ Communocatorn and the Sabbath ffeuow$hp The Sabbath Recorder the Years The late Herbert N. Wheeler, \vho was a lecturer for the U. S. Bureau of Forestry, wrote n the 1944 centennal ssue of the Sabbath Recorder of hs eagerness as a chld growng up n rural Kansas to go for the mal and get the weekly copy of the Recorder that came to ther home. Eghty years afterward n hs retrement he was stll grateful for ts reports, denomnatonal news, sermons, even for ts marrage and death notces. "n many homes the pages of the early Recorder were read by candlelght and even by the flckerng lght of a rag wck, twsted and submerged n a saucer of lard or - tallow," observed Herbert C. Van Horn, edtor of the centennal ssue. Sod houses, lonely cabns n the mountans or on the plans, busy vllage homes and brght cty apartments have been made frendly and glowng by the Recorder. ndeed those who stll have attcs are often as nostalgc about dscardng old Recorders as they are about a worn-out Bble, because these are symbols of the fellowshp and truth of ther Chrstan experence. And more than once possesson of a copy of the Recorder has been a means of dentfcaton between erstwhle strangers. A hstory of the Amercan Sabbath Tract Socety n Volume, Seventh Day Baptsts n Europe and Amerca, tells how our denomnaton's rght to exst was tested at dfferent tmes, and how Seventh Day Baptsts n Schenectady, N. Y., felt that a medum of communcaton among wdely scattered churches and peqple would strengthen them. The stock company they organzed to publsh the Mssonary Magazne n 1819 faled for lack of support. The Protestant Sentnel at Homer, N. Y., and the Seventh Day Baptst Regster at De Ruyter, N. Y., also faled; but the convcton fnally establshed tself n N ew York Cty n 1844 through eleven men who promsed to see t on ts feet. Four years later a publshng socety was organzed to buy the paper from the frst edtor, the Rev. By Albert N. Rogers George B. Utter, and hs colleagues, but ths socety lost out and sold the paper back to Utter who moved t to Westerly, R.. n 1872 when the Tract Socety had grown stronger the Recorder was purchased agan and moved to Alfred, N. Y., where t was publshed untl Then on recommendaton of General Conference t was moved to Planfeld, N. J., ts home snce that tme. Other publcatons and church extenson work of the Tract Socety across the country and overseas can be only noted here, but they contrbuted to the ncreasng nfluence and crculaton of the Recorder. A. H. Lews, our most nfluental wrter and leader n Sabbath promoton, was edtor of the Recorder from 1898 to 1907 and ts pages were one of hs platforms. Theodore L. Gardner who succeeded hm dd more than anyone else to rally support for a denomnatonal buldng at Planfeld, and he lved to see t dedcated n 1929 as the home of varous Seventh Day Baptst agences. Durng World War the names of men servng n the armed forces, totallng 43 1, were publshed regularly and each ssue was opened fearfully lest some frend be. lsted as a casualty. n the dffcult post -war years t was natural for the Tract Socety to share ts secretary, Edwn B. Shaw, wth the Mssonary Socety, establshng precedent for more recent coordnaton through the Plannng Commttee and the offce of the general secretary of Conference. The tny and solated group of Seventh Day Baptsts that lved at Calhan, Colo., n the eghte,s held debates and declamaton contests on vtal ssues of the day n ther schoolhouse church. They had regular reports on mssonary actvtes n Chna, whch they supported herocally. Ther prmary source of current nformaton for these was the Recorder. Our prmary source today for denomnatonal news and edtoral comment, as well as of consderable materal for general thought and culture, s the same. One! college professor sad that a respectable Ph.D. dssertaton could be wrtten on several subjects from the Recorder fles. The Recorder's edtors through a century and a quarter are approprately lsted n the masthead of ths annversary ssue. t would be equally approprate f space allowed to lst those who contrbuted copy regularly through certan perods. The edtors guded the polcy of the publcaton and wrote the edtorals whle the contrbutors gave t much color and charm. The Chldren's Page edted for many years by Mzpah S. Greene wth ts letters to and from chld readers, the Denomnatonal Hook-Up conceved by Herbert C. Van Horn out of hs vast de~omnatonal acquantance when transcontnental rado programs were new and exctng, and the wrtngs of Los R. Fay Powell each added somethng dstnctve. Mssonares' letters afford a vvd account of both the Chrstan enterprse and socal development n other countres. Lucy M. Carpenter, wfe of one of our frst mssonares to Chna sent to the Recorder a pognant poem she had wrtten n farewell to the shp "Houqua" and ts captan after ther voyage, the manuscrpt of whch s now n the Seventh Day Baptst Hstorcal Socety museum. t expresses her lonelness and hopes, and the cost of Chrst's servce n such a place n Reports of local church actvtes and the tours of home mssonary pastors, before toursts were vacatonsts, mrror the vtalty and deep concerns of people n a thousand places. We should also pay our debt of apprecaton to the offcers of the Tract Board who through the years have fostered the Recorder, pad ts expenses and employed ts personnel. Subsdy by General Conference has always been necessary and sometmes ths has seemed heavy. But hours and hours 'of thought and effort are donated or a much larger subsdy would be requred. The presdents of the Tract Board and ther assocates through the years have been consecrated men and women tryng to do ther best to meet the needs of the denomnaton and the objectves of ts weekly. God has spoken hstorcally through Jesus Chrst, through law and covenant, and Hs Word. n some very real sense the Sabbath Recorder s for us an expresson of all of these. Congratulatons From the Evangelcal Press Assocaton At a tme when new magaznes are bcng born overnght and old ones arc strugglng to survve, t s gratfyng to note the edtoral stablty of a Chrstan perodcal. The Evangelcal Press Assocaton congratulates the edtors of the Sabbath Recorder on the occason of ts 125th publcaton annversary. The magazne has mnstered to at least three generatons and outlasted ts edtors. May the Lord be pleased to keep strong ths edtoral voce for Chrst and Hs Kngdom. Norman Rohrer Executve Secretary From the Baptst Jont Commttee on Publc Affars Leon Maltby, Edtor The Sabbath Recorder Dear Brother Maltby, The occason of the 125th annversary beng currently celebrated by Seventh Day Baptsts s an event whch we are pleased to note. The Baptst Jont Commttee on Publc Affars s apprecatve of the contnung and fathful partcpaton of Seventh Day Baptsts. 6 E/lTED BT GEOBGE a. OTTEB UTHE SEVE."TH DAY S :J'HE SA&lTH OF THE!.ORO 1'HY GOD" VOL.. NEW-YORK. FFrJ DAY,.JUNE 13, 1.8«. A ArDcles n the frst the Scubb(Q}th Rec@rder By Rev. Wllarq D. Burdck* ;.1-- A glance at the pages of that old Recorder remnds us that the edtor, Rev. George B. Utter, planned the paper when condtons, n many respects, were qute dfferent from what they are now-but that he planned wsely. The terrtory of the Unted States was much smaller than t s now; slavery exsted n several of the states; travel was slow; newspapers were not numerous; and denomnatonal, natonal, and world news traveled slowly. n 1844 there were but three of our present Seventh Day Baptst churches west of New York State-Jackson Center, Oho, Mlton, Ws., both organzed n 1840; and Albon, Ws., organzed n The most nterestng artcle n the paper, beleve, s the "ntroductory" by the edtor, coverng the frst column on page two. The quotatons that make from ths artcle cannot adequately convey the plan and sprt of the artcle. The frst lnes are these: "n presentng to the publc the frst number of a paper, a statement may justly be expected of the reasons for ts publcaton, and of the course t s ntended to pursue." Followng a statement that amcable arrangements had been made to remove the publshng nterest of the Seventh Day Baptst Regster from DeRuyter to New York Cty, the edtoral states, "We now propose to ssue from ths cty a weekly sheet, n the phlce of the Regster, devoted to an exposton and vndcaton of the pecular vews of the Seventh Day * Ths s a reprnt from the centennal ssue wth a few short paragraphs omtted. Baptst denomnaton, n connecton wth the crculaton of relgous and secular ntellgence. n the prosecuton of our labors, we shall endeavor to speak consstently wth that grand maxm, 'The Bble only s the relgon of Protestants.' " "Two objects, connected wth the people for whose especal beneft our paper has been establshed, wll be constantly before us. Our frst object wll be, to promote vtal pety, n connecton wth unted and vgorous benevolent acton, among the people themselves..... t shall be our am, then, to exert an nfluence n favor of jonng the two, and leadng men, whle they 'keep!!e commandments of God,.' to honor also 'the fath of Jesus'... Our second object wll be to show the reasons why the Seventh Day Baptsts occupy ther present poston n regard to other denomnatons, and the bearng of the common vew respectng the change of the Sabbath upon the nfluence of that nsttuton. Wth a full convcton, that by forsakng the day orgnally set apart by God for the Sabbath, men have been led lghtly to estmate the prvleges and to neglect the dutes of the nsttuton, we shall from tme to tme speak freely of our reasons for belevng that a return to the observaton of the seventh day of the week s the only means 'of securng fully the desgns of the Sabbath. We cannot thnk that ths s a queston of words merely, but must thnk that t s a queston vtal to the best nterests of an nsttuton whch has exerted, and must contnue to exert, a most mportant nfluence upon the destnes of man. And we shall endeavor, by presentng the hstory of the Sabbath, the dfferent dscussons whch t has undergone, the reasons of those dscus- (Contnued on page 25)., How We D@ t Producng the Sabbath Recorder n 1969 Not long before ths 125th year of publcaton there were some changes n the workng force and the general procedure n the publshng house of the Amercan Sabbath Tract Socety - changes that could well be called consoldaton. The once successful plan of dong commercal prntng to equp and man a prnt shop capable of effcently prntng the Sabbath Recorder and other denomnatonal lterature had to be dropped because the commercal work had become a lablty rather than an asset. The publshng house returned to ts orgnal sngle purpose and pared down ts force to just what was needed for denomnatonal work. Takng advantage of the good equpment on hand and purchasng more that was suted to the need t has been possble to operate effcently. n ths 125th year the new procedures are well establshed and runnng smoothly. The numerous and dversfed proced ures nvolved n gettng the Sabbath Recorder nto the mal every Frday have not changed. There are not many shortcuts. Edtng, wrtng, typng, typesettng, proofreadng, hand composton, prntng, foldng and malng are some of the processes that are constant each week and are carred out effcently by our loyal workers wthout a pad manager (the Rev. Alton L. Wheeler s the actng manager). Belevng n the mportance of our work a number of people go beyond the call of duty gvng extra hours of labor. Clock watchng, so common n most enterprses, s foregn to our publshng enterprse. Everybody has a part n plannng ahead to get the Recorder job done, along wth the denomnatonal work that flows through the publshng house.. Specal trbute needs to be pad at the end of another quarter century of publcaton to the key man n the shop whose years of servce go back more than twenty-fve years. Henry Pouln, long-term pressman, has learned several new sklls Henry Pouln at one of the machnes and has taken on a varety of tasks. Our fathful lnotype man, Gerry Landry, s pretty well ted up to hs machnes. Mr. Pouln takes over the galleys of type, makes up the pages accordng to the dummy provded by the edtor's offcc, locks up the prntng forms, and prnts the ssue. Ths s normally completed on the Wednesday precedng the Monday date of ssue. He then takes a lttle tme on Thursday for foldng and trmmng. When the papers are ready to mal on Frday, he completes the weekly cycle by transportng the malbags to the post offce. n hs spare tme, wth occasonal help from former regular employees, he does all the other work of smlar naturc for the other publcatons. There are others whose tme of servce n offce and shop has been long and fathful. Etta North O'Connor, who s known personally by most of our su b scrbers through her many years of thoughtful handlng of subscrptons, now assumes the panstakng task of dong most of the proofreadng, not to menton several other necessary offce tasks such as telephone grl and mal clerk. Another helper whose work spans the years s Gladys Wooden Pouln, wfe of Henry Pouln. Her work as clercal assstant to the edtor goes back of the sxteen years the present edtor has been at hs desk. She also does the offce work of the Memoral Fund afternoons. For 10 11

some tme she has desred to drop off her part-tme work n the edtor-secretary's offce to have more tme to herself. Durng the past year when the edtor was handcapped wth a broken leg and some hosptalzaton she fathfully took on extra responsbltes n gettng out the Sabbath Recorder and handlng the other offce work. To her a long standng debt of grattude s due as we round out the f-rst quarter of our second century of ths denomnatonal organ.,we have mentoned the mportant work n. the begnnng of the prntng process, the typesettng done for a number of years by our mature, experenced, ntellectually acute Mr. Landry. At the other end of the process s the part-tme work of gatherng, sttchng, wrappng, and addressng. Margaret Herres, wfe of a former long-tme foreman of the shop does ths and many other thngs on a partal-week bass. Nmble-fngered and versatle, Mrs. Herres, after years n the malng department has learned a number of new sklls. The Sabbath Recorder has come to depend heavly on her knowledge and skll. Of less years of servce, but mportant to the total operaton of the prntng process s Mrs. Wllam McAJster who keeps books, helps wth proofreadng and. takes other denomnatonal responsbltes. She does not work full days. She follows n the footsteps of her mother, Mrs. Courtland V. Davs, who for much of the tme covered by ths ssue was the chef proofreader for Recorder Press. -L. M. M. From CD llon~sablbatl'hkeeperr Dear Recorder frends: Just. a: note to enclose wth my check to express apprecaton for the Recorder and for all the staff who make t possble. am glad for ths means of keepng n touch wth denomnatonal affars and many frends across the country. Betty Rood Galt Salt Lake Cty, Utah Greetngs from the Natonal Churches Greetngs and congratulatons to the 125 year old Sabbath Recorder for your fathfulness to the "Good News." We salute the Seventh Day Baptsts also for your contrbuton to, and nvolvement n, the ecumencal movement. As a charter member of The Federal Councl and The Natonal Councl of Churches you have made a sgnfcant contrbuton to the Church of Jesus Chrst through the conclar movement as well as through your own denomnaton..'0 These are days of crss and opportunty for all churches. As Chrstans "we do not lose heart," as Paul wrote to the Cornthans, but we jon together to face the challenges and opportuntes of these days wth the hope we have n Jesus Chrst, our Dvne Lord and Savor. The Natonal Councl of Churches, organzed n 1950, has been able to assst the churches n developng dynamc lay and clergy leadershp, n renewng and revtalzng the church n ts msson of servce to all men, and n confrontng persons wth the relevancy of the Gospel n all areas of lfe. We pray that the NCC may contnue "to manfest our oneness n Hm," to show forth "msson and unty" and "to brng the churches nto lvng contact wth one another for fellowshp, study and acton." Through four program unts -Dvson of Chrstan Educaton, Dvson of Chrstan Lfe and Msson, Dvson of Chrstan Unty, Dvson of Overseas Mnstres- and three offces - Admnstraton, Plannng and Program, and Communcaton - we seek to fu1fll the msson of Chrst and the wll of the churches. We are pleased that more than 4,000 persons serve on more than 275 commttees n the Councl, and we are grateful for the splendd leadershp your communon provdes n our common dedcaton to msson and unty. R. H. Edwn Espy General Secretary!... So Do Bo World Fed~raton Takes Shape By Loren G. dsborn, Presdent When the Sabbath Recorder noted ts 120th annversary of publcaton, the seeds for a worldwde fellowshp of Seventh Day Baptsts were planted. That was fve years ago n sessons of a group representng Seventh Day Baptst Conferences n several natons - CoWoCo t was called. Now, on the occason of the Recorder's 125th annversary ssue, the seeds of CoWoCo are sproutng nto a vable organzaton known as the Seventh Day Baptst World Federaton. Provde, Promote, Stmulate and Coordnate are the keywords n the Consttuton of the Federaton as t was adopted at that hstorc sesson of cowoeo. The results, slow to become apparent, but real all the same, have been ncreasngly encouragng. Based on the orgnal plans worked out by the cowoeo delegates representng seven natonal Seventh Day Baptst Bodes, the membershp has reached a total of eleven... wth a number of nqurng groups showng n-. terest n dentfyng themselves as Seventh Day Baptsts and addng ther membershp to the growng lst. The future s mpossble to forecast, but certan hopes and ams for-that uncertan tme ahead are dscernble. Stll based on the key words of the Federaton Consttuton, forward progress s contemplated. Let us reterate the phrases that accompany the key words: To provde ncreased communcaton among Seventh Day Baptst groups.... To promote. projects of mutual nterest... To stmulate fellowshp.... To coordnate mutual endeavors... These four ponts, coupled wth the defnton of membershp, spell out progress n worldwde cooperaton and understandng, and the strengthenng of the dstnctve Seventh Day Baptst wtness n many lands. ncreased communcaton s provded through numerous' channels, ncludng drect ~ommuncaton among the mem- bers of the Executve Commttee and the offcal representatves of the Federaton; the use of the SDBWF Newsletter delvered perodcally to approxmately 300 subscrbers n key postons among the meqlber bodes; strong support from the Sabbath Recorder wth ts nternatonallyorented lst of subscrbers. 'Yth freer communcatons, the promoton of projects of mutual nterest to the members has been made possble. The surface has only been scratched n the potental benefts to be realzed n the future from ths servce. Fellowshp has been stmulated, not only through more frequent communcaton, but n the exchange of fraternal delegates among Conferences, and n the plannng for the frst sesson of the Seventh Day Baptst World Federaton to be held n August 1971, at Westerly, R.. Coordnaton of mutual endeavors s probably the most tangble result of the functonng of ths nternatonal bod y. Such endeavors nclude the encouragement and nvestgaton of nqurng groups who dstngush themselves as Seventh Day BaptSts wthn varous. natons, channelng of assstance to meet the feeds and,~e~ue~ts "of fello~.members; 'J~ettng up MSSon -emphaszng unts wthn member Conferences so that mutual ad can b~ ~ore ~ractcal, and other equally unrealstc projects. The future surely holds promsegreat promse-f patence and dlgence are practsed n equal measure. Wth the 125th ~nnversary ssue of the Sabbath Recorder now n hand, and realzng that only fve years have elapsed snce the formalzaton of the World Federaton, t s easer to comprehend the slowness wth whch meanngful novements mature. To paraphrase the concluson of the CoWoCo report of 1964: "t s the heartfelt prayer of the member bodes that ths s only the begnnng of a substantal trend toward the goal of Seventh Day Baptst unty n Chrst and a vgorous wtness throughout_ the world." 12! 13

Seventh Day l8aptsts f8tuj~d for Tomorrow Although much space n ths annversary commemoratve ssue s approprately devoted to work of the past century and a quarter, we note wth nterest and approval the buldng of Seventh Day Baptsts for the future. The followng are examples of mprovements and expanson of facltes n churches n varous parts of the denomnaton. The Church of Jesus Chrst, as Se~th Day Baptsts conceve t, s certanly much more than brck and mortar. But buldng projects offer a joyful sort of stewardshp, and they testfy to a fath n generatons to come and the God beyond hstory. A. N. R. e. ~. 9 The New lev~ngedbsm By Mynor G. Soper (Mr. Soper of North Loup, Nebr., recently pastor of the Los Angeles church s the new "Home Front Evangelst" employed by the Seventh Day Baptst Mssonary Socety on a project bass.) We stand at a pont n the hstory of evangelsm between two man methods: mass evangelsm and personal evangelsm~ For the most part, ma~s evangelsm, whch so electrfed great masses of people and served as a channel through whch the Holy Sprt moved the hearts of many to repentance and commtment to Chrst, has for years been on the declne. The need for ths type of "entertanment" to draw people has dmnshed wth the advent of moves, rado and televson and a myrad of other "attenton-getters." To be sure, ths method always lacked one fundamental ngredent - personalness! ts very nature, where many were respondng, made t almost mpossble to deal wth each ndvdual on a personal bass: ~thout that personal touch, many well-mtentoned, sncerely motvated repentants, lackng drecton, had no alternatve but to contnue on the only way of lfe they. knew. Thus, charges were brought aganst the practce of mass evangelsm as beng only an appeal to emoton whch ddn't last. The real falure lay n the lack of understandng of what to do wth and for those who had responded to the nvtaton to commt themselves to God through Jesus Chrst. Recognzng ths falure, modem mass evangelsm has developed ~n?rganzatonal structure and coupled t Wth teachable technques to tran personal workers to assst those who make a publc response. The results have been gratfyng. thnk there wll reman a place for mass evangelsm n the process of communcatng God's love to the world. t wll obvously no longer be the major technque. At ths very moment, we stand at the brnk of dscoverng the exhlaratng techngue of personal evangelsm. To say "d1scoverng" may seem a msnomer. t s really a redscovery of the method Jesus Chrst commtted to 16 Hs followers and commanded all belevers to use, when He commssoned us to "go n:to all the world and preach (tell, communcate) the gospel to every creature" (Mark 16: 15). He ntended for every belever to be personally nvolved. The technque was smple: "Go... tell them how great thngs the Lord hath done..." (Mark 5: 19), wherever and wth whomever one could get an audence. There s nothng so convncng and contagous as lstenng to someone who s moved and alve wth hs own personal experence of what Chrst has done for hm. However good t may have been, the system that has developed through the centures of the nsttutonal Church, has robbed ndvduals of the personal nvolvement of sharng wth each other what the Lord means to them personally. At long last the laty has begun to move, convnced that ts role s more than beng a spectator. n addton, ths role as spectator seemed to reduce them to passvty and mpotence, both n ther ablty to lve Chrst-controlled lves and to gve meanngful help to anyone else. And, n all farness to the laty, t must be conceded that many of us n the mnstry were smlarly afflcted. Now, however, by the grace and mercy of our heavenly Father, Hs Sprt s mpellng the laymen n many places across the world to ether practce the love of God trust Hm that Hs word s true and share. Hs love exemplfed n Chr~t, or gve up the pretense. Amazng thngs are begnnng to happen on whch have not the space to elaborate here. The exctng thng now s that great numbers of Chrstans are becomng vtally concerned about those who have never heard of the love of God and the savng power of Chrst or those who have not heard t n such an appealng way that they too want to commt ther lves to Chrst. Ths great arm of heretofore untapped resources of God's army s. now ready to be tapped! What les ahead for them? Wll they go dashng off n all drectons flled only wth ther desre to help? The future for effectve evangelsm depends on our ds- J.\ cernng the need and equppng people wth effectve tools to stand n the gapthat s, beng able to teach ths vast army of sncere belevers a transferable technque! They must be traned now n two partcular thngs: 1) How to have the assurance of the fllng and empowerng presence of the Holy Sprt n ther own lves. Jesus warned Hs own mmedate followers to "tarry ye n the cty of Jerusalem, untl ye be endued wth power from on hgh" (Luke 24:49b). And agan He sad, C;C;Ye shall receve power, after that the Holy Ghost s come upon you: and ye shall be wtnesses unto me..." (Acts 1: 8 ). Ths s a must! But the falure to under:.. stand and teach ths smple truth has made us as mnsters and laymen alke to be mpotent. 2 ) The second thng s that we must tran them n a smple, yet effectve method whch not only works, but s vtal n ther own experence, thus makng t a real, lvng testmony to the truth. Such methods have been made avalable today as God has spoken to dedcated men and revealed to them the "how" of personal wtnessng coupled \vth the essental ngredents of the gospel. Lterally thousands of people who prevously sad they couldn't wtness have no,v become excted wtnesses for Chrst, smply by beng shown how to communcate ther fath n Jesus Chrst. Ths type of tranng s the thng that s needed most at the present tme: to take advantage of a vast army of Chrstans who sncerely want to see the world changed, who really want to share ther fath, whch they know s the answer to the world's problems, but who don't know how to go about t. Heren les the great future n evangelsm - that about whch Paul exhorted Tmothy: "And the thngs that thou hast heard of me among many wtnesses, the same commt thou to fathful men, who shall be able to teach others also" (2 Tm. 2: 2 ). We must teach others to teach others so that they can teach yet others to be wtnesses to the good news that God s wllng to forgve and cleanse and gve eternal lfe to everyone who wll beleve that He "so loved the world, that He gave Hs only begotten Son, that whosoever beleveth n hm should not persh, but have everlastng lfe" ( John 3: 16). Congratulatons from the Assocated Church Press Edtor: There are very few relgous journals n the Unted States and Canada that have reached the venerable age of 125 years. n fact, there are very few secular publcatons that can boast such an amazng contnuty of publcaton. Please accept my congratulatons on ths happy occason. know your readershp wll rejoce wth you upon ths annversary. Be assured that the Sabbath Recorder has always been an honored member of the Assocated Church Press and your contrbutons to greater understandng among our many publcatons and edtors has always been apprecated. Klausler Executve Secretary From the Revew and Herald Noone can challenge the vtalty of a magazne that has survved for 125 years, ever snce 1844! Please accept the congratulatons of the Revew and Herald, a mere youngster that frst appeared n 1850, when the Sabbath Recorder wasr already a healthy sx-year-old. The world has changed dramatcally n the past century and a quarter, but the seventh-day Sabbath has not changed. t s stll God's holy day. t stll commemorates God's creatve power exercsed durng the frst sx days of world hstory. t stll stands as a contnual challenge to both thestc and athestc evoluton. The Sabbath Recorder has mantaned, ts vgor because the message t bears s sorely needed by the entre world, Chrstan and non-chrstan alke. 10 l"fract ll ~l'esdefr}t As others have so fttngly demonstrated n other columns of ths 125th annversary commemoratve ssue, an eghth of a mllenum s longer than most journals of relgon and church lfe are able to survve. May add a few words of commendaton from the Amercan Sabbath Tract Socety to all persons who have carred on the Sabbath Recorder tradton durng the latest 25 years of an llustrous, f sometmes stormy hstory! Seventh Day Baptsts owe a debt of grattude to the memory of the late busness panager, L. Harrson North, Edtor Herbert C. Van Horn and hs wfe, Abbe B. Van Hom, who flled an nterm edtorshp. But more approprate today s a hearty greetng and salutaton to two past edtors - the Rev. Hurley S. Warren' now n "retrement," and laymaneducator Dr. K. Duane Hurley, now presdent of Salem College - and to the present ncumbent, the Rev. Leon M. Maltby, who contnues to lead, teach, encourage, nspre, perhaps even to cajole hs readers n thought-flled weekly messages. One strength of the Sabbath Recorder s ts hstorc polcy of encouragng more than one sde of a queston to be presented honestly, wthout rancor or unchrstan p'~onal attack. Edtor Maltby has successlully mantaned that tradton, f crtcsms from "both sdes" are any crteron. My salute goes out also to those who work behnd the scenes - to the coworkers n the publshng house and the Tract Socety offce, to the often anonymous contrbutors from local churches, to persons who prepare sgned artcles for publcaton (sometmes on request, but always wthout remuneraton), and to those who fathfully renew ther subscrptons even when they may take ssue wth one or another opnon they read n the Recorder's columns. Congratulatons to all of you, but don't forget that our work s never fnshed, there wll be more tomorrow! ~. Whle the Recorder has been more or less a "Planfeld project" only for the last 75 years, t s one of the prme responsbltes of a Socety whose trustees 18 have long been Planfeld area or HSouth Jersey" resdents. To others of the 30 trustees, may say that your dedcaton of tme and talents s ndeed apprecated, even when seemngly unnotced! Ths gves me an opportunty to speak a word to you, the Seventh Day Baptst reader, who may be enterng nto a new career on wshng to change to another one promsng greater rewards-whether or not fnancal, at least n the satsfacton of dong an mportant job as well as you can wth God's help! The Planfeld area abounds wth opportunty! Perhaps your feld s nertal gudance (so mportant to the recent lunar landng), or electroncs, or communcatons, or engneerng, or chemcal, medcal or drug research, or producton, or busness, or mechancal assembly, or any of the buldng or servce trades, or educaton, or cty plannng, or whatever - the metropoltan North Jersey-New York area has openngs cryng to be flled by the rght person! Perhaps you may have forgotten that ths Socety'S publshng house even now s solctng applcatons from a qualfed prnter who can double n creatve layout or n offce procedures, and from a secretary-typst for the edtor-secretary's offce. Not only ths Socety, but the General Conference, the Hstorcal Socety, the Center for Mnsteral Educaton, the Memoral Fund, and even the Planfeld church earnestly solct your nterest and help by sharng actvely n ther work! Much s ndeed gong on now, but your help could make t go even better. Only a word need be sad here about other mportant Tract Socety work n preparng, prntng or dstrbutng lterature for, by and to Seventh Day Baptsts and to the world. The Helpng Hand, the annual Yearbook, books, tracts, flmstrps and tape recordngs all share a msson wth the Sabbath Recorder to lead n "Chrstan enlghtenment and nspraton," and to "... promote the observance of the Bble Sabbath and the nterests of vtal godlness and sound mora lty..." --",. Charles H. North, Presdent Amercan Sabbath Tract Socety! OJ! \!.1 f t t! t: r ~. r ~', Revewng and Rene.wng the Sabbath Fath By Rev. Herbert E. Saunders "Whch of you, de~rng to buld a tower, does not frst st down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete t?" (Luke 14: 28 ).. "A Crss s at hand. The Sabbath queston has reached a pont... n ths country.. "" where a reconsderaton s mperatve.... God has blessed our efforts... untl we cannot go backward, f we would. The queston s not of one day aganst another. We stand for loyalty to God; for obedence as aganst dsobedence; for reverence and Sabbath sm aganst rreverence and Sabbathlessness. Seventh-day Baptsts have wated for centures 'n dumb endurance,' wth lttle hope, knowng that God bade them stand, as the Roman solder stood at the gate of Pompe whle the ashes from Vesuvus covered hm. Our fathers have lad the foundaton well. To us the call comes, 'Count the cost, and buld the tower.' We must heed ths call and rse wth the occason, or be overwhelmed by the comng tde."! These eloquent words, wrtten at the close of the nneteenth century, bear repeatng today as we thnk about 125 years of Sabbath wtness and consder a new and dynamc understandng of the Sabbath and ts role n modern socety. The dynamc changes that have characterzed modern man have developed an mpersonalzaton of our cultural lfe and actvty. All one has to do to realze the lack of ndvdual qualty s to examne the moral, socal and sprtual depravty nherent n twenteth century culture. We lve n a day and age that s searchng for somethng that has the sprtual qualty that wll restore God's human creaton to hs rghtful place as the hghest order. The majesty of God's promses that one day, through Jesus Chrst, man wll acheve the sprtual restoraton he so desperately needs, demands that we search out and fnd the tool through whch such sprtual reconclaton s possble. The demand s upon us to brng to the world of twenteth century man the means through whch, once agan, he can fnd fellowshp and communon wth hs Creator and realze the potental that s nherent n hs character. t s n the search for such a tool that the Sabbath and all t represents comes nto focus and brngs to man the relatonshp wth the Creator that makes personal hs lfe. There has to be n each man's lfe the opportunty to fnd expresson for hs most nward thoughts and desres. The Sabbath s God's provson for that relatonshp whch s the cryng need of ths restless age. Dr. Ernest R. Palen, a mnster of the Reformed Church of Amerca, n March of 1966 advocated a return to the Sabbath of the Bble. He sad: "Our madly rushng, neurotc socety needs the therapy of the slence and quetness that flows from a day kept holy. really holy. A day when our thoughts are of God, our actons are tempered by a desre to serve God and our famles, a day that s so dfferent from other days that t could make us dherent n our relatonshps to God and to our fellow men."~ The tme has come for the world to realze ts need for a Sabbath dedcated to the restoraton of relatonshp wth God and desgned to buld the ndvdual character of man. Somethng s necessary n the lfe of man today f the mpersonalzaton of hs lfe s not to relegate hm to the role of mechancal robot for an ndustral complex that denes any need for relatonshp to the Creator. New movements n theology and bblcal scholarshp have not been able. to acheve ths goal of restorng man to hs sprtual fellowshp wth God. n fact, often, as n the case of the recent "God s Dead" craze, the mpersonal relatonshp of a man to hs God has added to the confuson whch domnates our twenteth century world. The need, therefore, 19

.. s for somethng real and genune whch wll allow man to gve expresson to hs nward desre to meet God and share wth Hm the fellowshp of lfe. Ths s the purpose of God's Sabbath, gven to man as a trust and as a symbol of that constant personal relatonshp that he so desperately desres. "The day of God leads to the house of God, to the Book of God, and to the Son of God."3 We have come to the pont n tme when we must begn to "buld the Sabbath tower" keepng ever n mnd that what happens to the world because of our efforts s the result of our dedcaton and the response to our sncerty. A. H. Lews once sad that "there s nothng n the Sabbath unless there s much more n t than ether ts frends or ts enemes seem to apprehend."4 The demands of the hour are that we who bear the responsblty of mantanng a Sabbath sprtualty must come to a new realzaton of the sgnfcance of our "day of rest" and gve t the place n our hearts and lves that wll produce "character and Chrstan lfe so exalted so as to compel fath n ts mportance."5 There s a need for us who nsst on the mportance of the Sabbath to begn to keep t and proclam. t, "from a bass that relates t n meanngful and reverent ways to man's lfe today, and our lves must become lvng demonstratons of the values of sabbathkeepng before we shall be able to share these values wth others n a convncng way."6 The Sabbath does have sgnfcance for the twenteth century, possbly more than t has ever had before, prmarly because the demands of the age requre that man fnd hmself and reestablsh the communcaton lnes between hmself and hs Creator. There s a great longng n the world - a longng for somethng, real and vtal and creatve. There s a search for dentty and recognton. There s a demand for new purpose and new drecton, new trust and new fath, but above all, new sprtualty and personal qualty of lfe. The realzaton of these demands s to be found n a restoraton of the Sabbath and the sabbatc dea. The fulfllment of all the desres of man as a sprtual and moral beng s to be found n a restoraton of the clams that the Sabbath has on a man's lfe. The frustratons of the present age would quckly be dspelled should man fnd unque fellowshp wth the God of the Sabbath who made the Sabbath for hs sprtual renewal. Seventh Day ~aptsts ought to stand n unque contrast to the present world's preoccupaton wth busyness and ts overemphass on the materal. We ought to stand for sprtual lfe and a personal encounter wth God n contrast to concern for wealth, prestge and socal recognton. Because of the Sabbath we fnd ourselves n the unque poston of beng the nstruments through whch a new sprtual lfe can be born n twenteth century man. We have the one, perfect and God-ordaned symbol of true sprtualty, and our keepng of t and our expresson of ts values must be sncere and nspred.!;'the Sabbath queston forms the only just reason for our denomnatonal exstence, separate from other Baptsts.... Ether the Sabbath s not of suffcent mportance to justfy our contnuance, or the present and prospectve ssues are such as demand far more of us than we have ever yet done."7 We stand today on the threshold of ether a new concern for sprtual lfe or the sprtual sucde of contemporary Chrstanty. The pressures of the. secular world are beng forced to envelope the mass of socety and are brngng pressure to bear on the very ndvdualty of man. Even contempo-. rary Chrstanty s beng caught up n the overwhelmng pressures of secular lfe. What s needed today s a new emphass on personal dentty and worth, and such contemplaton requres a tme set apart for renewal and sprtual exercse, such the Sabbath affords. Seventh Day Baptsts have the oppor-!, r j, j "! tunty to share ther fath wth the world. "No man can prove hs fath n the Sabbath by a quet observance of t alone... (for a) non-propagatng fath n the Sabbath s dyng or dead fath."8 We who call ourselves Seventh Day Baptsts can relnqush the rghts we have to the Sabbath merely by lettng our fath n t de. For years we have done almost that, and the tme has come for us to begn the process of Sabbath renewal. What we do about the Sabbath from now on wll determne not only the place of the Sabbath n a socety that needs t, but our own denomnatonal exstence. "t s therefore of the greatest moment, that Seventh Day Baptsts consder how they can successfully push themselves, and the truth of the Sabbath nto the thckest of the fght. f ther poston wll not stand ths new change, better know t at once. A truth that cannqt go to the front when God calls t there s not a truth to be contnued."9.-" There s a qualty of Sabbath experence that cannot be found on any other day than God's own day. There s n the Sabbath the realzaton that somethng dramatc has taken place, that one s no longer subject to the world but s once agan n command of hs own destny as God has ordaned t. There s n the Sabbath the qualty of change and release that cannot be found unless one realzes the potental whch God gave the Sabbath Day. Worshp, socal servce, fellowshp, and rest are all possble on any day of the week, but sabbathsm s only possble on the Sabbath - the seventh day of the week. The holness of the Sabbath sprngs out upon us as we set t asde n antcpaton of fellowshp wth God. When the Sabbath comes t restores n us the sense of belongng and once agan we are freed from the tyranny of the world. We realze and accept ts qualty and meet God on a plane not possble on any other day of the week. Keepng the Sabbath as Sabbath, wth God, restores n us the sprtual character that has been ours snce creaton. A. H. Lews, n hs book Sprtual Sabbathsm, wrtes: "People wll never understand Sabbathsm untl they try t, and try t on a hgh sprtual plane. "10 The frutless efforts toward sabbathsm gve eloquent evdence of the futlty of tryng to nstll sabbath qualtes on any day but the Sabbath. But let us not presume to suggest than one automatcally realzes sabbath qualty by merely "keepng the Sabbath Day." Even we who hold to the bblcal foundatons of the Sabbath are all too often ndfferent, neglgent and careless as to ts sabbatc qualtes. True sabbathsm must be a conscous expresson of Sabbath understandng. Belef n the Sabbath must concde wth Sabbath-keepng. A search for Sabbath lfe must go hand n hand wth Sabbath observance. One must fnd God on the Sabbath or the sgnfcance of Hs rest s meanngless. "To enjoy the Sabbath and the Lord of the Sabbath, one must frst have entered nto rest through fatvn Hm.... When fellowshp s restored, then the Sabbath has a meanng for man. "11 Sabbathsm" then, s the conscous observance of the Sabbath Day n communon wth God, keepng ever n mnd that "t s God's Sabbath; He made f' and "t s man's Sabbath; he needs t. t should make us more conscous of God, and more lke Jesus Chrst. ts hghest value for us wll depend upon how we use t; whether we hold t sacred and keep t holy.":! There s no set human standard for Sabbath observance. Conscence becomes the gude for Sabbath observance. "The keepng of the Sabbath ourselves n order that others may keep t, s keepng t for God, and therefore keepng t holy. Any conduct, or word, on our part that wll hnder a~y one else drectly or ndrectly from keepng the Sabbath can hardly be sad to be keepng the Sabbath holy."13 Anythng, therefore, "whch does not 20 21

; : 1.;-, hnder our Chrstan growth or harm our sprtual well-beng - these thngs are n keepng wth the sacredness of the day. "14 Sabbath-keepng must enter a hgher plane than that magned by contemporary man. f t s to be meanngful at all there must be a conscous effort to do that on the Sabbath whch leads toward an understandng of God's wll. Anythng that detracts from such contemplaton or that allows one to forget that t s the Sabbath s detrmental to the joy and peace and quetness that the Sabbath can brng. There s somethng n the Sabbath that only a conscous keepng of t - n obedence to the wll of God - can brng nto the lfe of man. Values are nherent n t, but can only be found by one who keeps t wthout fal. There s, therefore, a dstngushng mark on one who regularly keclps the Sabbath. The Sabbath, kept fathfully and conscously, gves dstnctve qualtes to one's lfe. What we are n our Sabbath keepng, then, determnes the.recognton of others that the Sabbath has qualtes for them. "The best tes!nnony that we can possbly gve to our belef n the Sabbath s a people urutedly and consecratedly keepng the Sabbath holy. Our nfluence n ths respect s greatly hampered by ndvduals who, by ther practce, make lght?f the Sabbath day."15 Sabbath keepng, then, evdences sprtual lfe, and nfluences, one way or the other, others who may be searchng for such lfe. We who. observ~.the Sabbath and experence ts sprtual qualtes know tha! there.s a.poslt~e effect on the lfe of man. Accomplshng those tasks WhCh are.l! hne wth ~abbath sacredness gves meanng to one's lfe and restores splntual expresson. There s so much that the Sabbath offers modern man. Rest, renew~l, sprtual devoton and a qualty of lfe that has no parallel. The keepng of the Sabbath wth these thoughts n mnd wll do much to buld a sabbath fath that wll stand the test of tme. 1 Lews, Abram Herbert. "Great Demands." Utter, frst edtor of the SABBATH RECORDER, later moved to Westerly and establshed the WESTERLY SUN, the only daly n the U. S. whch omts publcaton on the Sabbath and has a regular edton on Sunday. The present head of the Utter Publshng Co. s Wlfred Utter, grandson of our frst edtor. "You are now approachng Westerly, Rhode sland, whch was settled n 1669 by Seventh Day Baptsts, a number of whom stll resde n the vcnty." So read a large sgn located at the top of the hll on what today s South Broad Street but then known as the Stonngton Road some ffty years ago. t had been erected by the Unted States Tre Company as a part of the latter's natonal advertsng program and depcted an open hstory book wth the quoted legend thereon. t was n fact a true statement, but those early Seventh Day Baptsts, as hardy a lot as they were, hardly could have lved that long as some facetous people construed the sgn to say. Actually the dea of a settlement n Msquamcut or Ascomcutt, as ths southwestern part of Rhode sland was then called., was conceved as early as June 29, 1661, when a group of Newport, R.., people purchased a tract of land from Sosoa, an ndan captan who clamed ownershp of the desred acreage by reason of hs conquest of the Pequots. t was about ffteen mles n length and seven n breadth bounded on the west by the Pawcatuck Rver and on the south by the Atlantc Ocean. Artcles of Agreement were entered nto by the orgnal purchasers and some seventy-sx others pror to the actual purchase date grantng the same prvleges to the added group accordng to ther proporton of land n the total purchased area. Ths group was composed preponderantly of ndvduals who were then Seventh Day Baptsts wth those who were not of that fath at the onset Address gven at the mornng servce of the Pawcatuck Seventh Day Baptst Church n Westerly, May 31, 1969, n connecton wth the observance of the 300th annversary of the foundng of Westerly, R.. By Karl G. Stllman becomng members later. Among thcl1 are ancestors of a great many Westcrly resdents of today ncludng Babcocks, Burdcks, Clar1;es, Cottrells, Crandalls. Greenes, Greenmans, Langworthys, Larkns, Lewses, Maxsons, Potters, Rogcrs. Saunders, Stllmans, Utters, Vars and others. Only Robert Burdck, Joseph Clarkc. Jr., and Tobas Saunders, all Seventh Day Baptsts, of all the purchascrs who planned to establsh new homes n the western part of the colony, actually made the move n 1660 but fve years later n 1665 more of them removed from Newport to the new settlement n the wlderness wth Rev. John Crandall as ther mnster as well as leader n the handlng of the busness and poltcal affars of the group. He, a Seventh Day Baptst, was the only mnster wthn a radus of twenty mles for a generaton. Although n general the ndans were frendly and wllng to trade wth the whtes, warrng among the varous trbes threatened the safety of the new settlers at tmes~~, Added to the trals of those poneers were the conflctng clams of the Massachusetts and Connectcut colones to the Msquamcut area. They each clamed jursdcton over the occuped land and accused settlers of beng trespassers. Robert Burdck and Tobas Saunders soon after ther arrval were forcbly abducted to Boston, charged wth trespass, fned 40 and mprsoned untl the fnes and a securty payment of 100 aganst any future trespass had been pad. n 1669 the terrtory of Msquamcut was ncorporated by the Colony of Rhode sland as the Town of Westerly, the 300th annversary of whch we are now celebratng. At the tme, the entre whte populaton n the area conssted of about thrty famles. The ncorporaton 22 23

was the frst under the new Colonal Charter of 1663 and the ffth n the hstory of the colony. Boundary dsputes contnued and n 1671, Connectcut authortes arrested Rev. John Crandall and others mprsonng them n Hartford. Rev. John Crandall mmedately followng ncorporaton together wth Tobas Saunders, had been apponted by the colony as "conservators of hs Majesty's peace" wth power to summon jures and hold courts. These Seventh Day Baptsts all held membershp n the Newport church and loved the relgous freedom secured n Rhode 'sland by Roger Wllams and hs assocates and had no ntenton of standng dly by whle both Massachusetts and Connectcut attempted to gan control over ther lands, ncdentally forcng them to accept the state domnated Congregatonal relgon. Not only would they have been prohbted from observ!ng th~ Sabbath but from baptsm by nnmerson. At the tme both states were mprsonng Baptsts and Seventh Day ~aptsts alke for followng that practce. n 1676, Kng Phlp's War was developng and relatves n Newport, notably Samuel Hubbard, sent over boats to brng back the threatened famles. There they remaned untl hostltes were over then returnng to Westerly to resume ther lfe n the wlderness. By 1680 there were so many Seventh Day Baptsts n the area that t was decded. to erect. a church buldng on the knoll n what S now the Frst Hopknton Cemetery at Meetnghouse or Seventh Day Brdge. Here servces were held n ths frst church n Westerly as a branch of the Newport Seventh Day Baptst Church, the thrd Baptst church n Rhode sland, preceded only by the Frst Baptst Church n Provdence whch was f~unded by Roger Wllams, and the F~st Baptst Church n Newport other WSe known as the John Clarke Baptst Chur:ch. Also the Newport Seventh Day BaptSt Church and the new church n Westerly as a branch of that church was the seventh Baptst church to be establshed n the entre country. Ths frst church at Meetnghouse Brdge ganed ts own dentty n 1708 when t separated from the Newport church and for nearly ffty years was varously known as the "Sabbataran Church n Westerly" or "n and about Westerly" or "Westerly an~ vcnty'" recognzng the fact that ts members resded n both Rhode sland and Connectcut. Eventually t was subdvded nto the Frst, Second and Thrd Hopknton (Rockvlle), the Frst (Dunn's Corners) and Second (Nantc) Westerly, the Paw~atuck Seventh Day Baptst, South Kmgstown (Green Hll) and Greensmanvlle Churches because of ts greatly ncreased membershp. n colonal day~ ths Sabbataran Church of Westerly havng some 900 members was beleved to be the largest church n the country, accordng to some hstorans. The frst church buldng resembled a typcal farly large colonal house two stores n heght. The Purtan smplcty of ~hs structure wthout steeple or decoraton gave t a dstnctve charm. As one entered the buldng there was a narrow vestbule at ether end 'of whch stars went up to a narrow balcony of the same wdth extendng along the full length of. the buldng. Drectly opposte the front door at the end of a wde asle runnng from the openng nto the sanctuary ~rom the vestbule was the pulpt. Extendng from the pulpt on both sdes around the nsde permeter of the church were twenty-two box pews each provdng seats for sx persons. n the center of the buldng and of the asle from the front door to the pulpt was a stove. On ether sde of ths asle n the hollow center of the sanctuary apparently there were benches for those who were not pew-holders. t s beleved that the nteror woodwork of the buldng w~s left n ts natural condton, unpanted and undecorated, as also probably was the exteror. The pew next to the pulpt was reserved for the mnster. The others were rented at one tme by members wth the famlar names of today's descendants ncludng Babcocks, Burdcks, Clarkes, Gavtts, Langworthy's, Larkns, Maxsons, Potters, Saunders, Stllmans and others. " ;l ;'1 1 ~ Three governors of the Colony of Rhode sland, all Seventh Day Baptsts wth Westerly connectons headed the Government vz. Benedct Arnold who as. ~econd ~overnor succeeded Roger Wllams, Rchard Ward and hs son Samuel Ward. The home of the latter stood at the comer of Langworthy and Shore Roads. Seventh Day Baptsts from Westerly and vcnty joned n the formaton of Brown Unversty n 1764 whch was called at the tme Rhode sland College. Samuel Ward served on ts Board of Trustees from ts foundng and was one of the frst to sgn ts petton for a charter. Rev. Joshua Clarke and Deacotl John Tanner also were trustees and Dr. Joshua Babcock, Westerly's frst postmaster, host to Benjamn Frankln on a vst of the latter to Westerly., was a fellow of Brown Unversty from ts foundng to hs death n Hs home stll stands on Grante Street and s now occuped by Mrs. Orlando R. Smth Jr. From the begnnng the orgnal settlers were members of the Colonal Assembly: Tobas Saunders servng from 1669 at sessons durng the years ended n 1690; Rev. John Crandall begnnng n 1670 through 1671; Nckolas Cottrell n 1670; Suball Paynter every year from 1670 through 1677 except 1671; Rev. John Maxson n 1670 and for several consecutve terms begnnng n 1687; Rev. Joseph Clarke from 1678 through 1708 for ntermttent terms; Robert Burdck n 1680 and 1685 and of course many others throughout the Colonal perod untl Seventh Day Baptsts n Westerly and vcnty throughout the entre three hundred years of ts hstory have been promnent n all felds of endeavor and leaders n local, state and natonal affars. do not mnmze ther accomplshments as have drected your thoughts to earler days. - These then were the settlers of Wester- 1y who braved the hardshps of poneer lfe n the wlderness of Western Rhode sland and who by ther courage and magnaton carved out a communty wthn' whose bounds a progressve cvl- zaton was developed. Ther strong characters and relance upon God at all tmes have provded us today wth a hertage both nsprng and well worth emulatng. A Revew of Artcles (Contnued from page 10) sons, and the persecutons to whch ts observers have been exposed, to show that the change of the day has wthdrawn from the nsttuton the sancton of God's authorty, has gven occason for men to deny the soundness of Protestant prncples, has strengthened the hands of papacy by allowng the authorty of tradton, has lad a heavy burden upon the Jew and prejudced hs mnd aganst the recepton of Chrstanty, and has done njustce to all those who adhere strctly and conscentously to the fourth commandment.... At the same tme that we shall endeavor to state our vews wth dstnctness, and defend them wth becomng zeal, we are determned that those who dffer from us shall have no occason to complan of unkndness or unfarness. " The paper as planned would have frequent bographcal sketches of nfluental Sabbath keepers n ths and other countres. The followng are also quotatons from the edtoral: "The benevolent and refo~atory movements of the day \vll receve a full share of attenton. We shall not fal to look wth deep nterest ~pon any efforts whch seem lkely to mprove the condton of the masses of socety, to dffuse knowledge~ to reclam the nebrate, to enfranchse the enslaved. an~ to make known those gospel truths WhCh are the foundaton of, everythng valuable to ndvduals or communtes.... A reform s needed - and an entre and radcal one t would be - whch shall brng us to the Word of God as the suffcent drectory n all matters, and exalt that above any of the nventons of men. Such a reform would strke at the root of our dffcultes. t would remove all those evls, n the church, n socety, n the world at large, over whch good men now mourn." '- "A porton of our paper wll be de

t -- voted to relgous, lterary, and scentfc subjects." "n the ntellgence Department we desgn to present the most mportant tems of foregn and domestc ntellgence." The plan so clearly presented n the "ntroductory" was mmedately entered nto n the frst ssue of the paper. The subjects of some,of the relgous artcles are: Sanctfcaton~ of the Sabbath, Methodst General Conference on the Sabbath, The Second Advent and the Sabbath, The Bble, Anecdote of Luther, and Walkng wth God. There are several tems and artcles from our churches and felds. A letter from Rev. J. L. Scott told of a second vst that he m3;de to Fulton County, ll., as our mssonary. Resolutons appear from the Hayfeld, Crawford County, Pennsylvana, Church when ther pastor, Rev. Thomas B. Brown, was about to leave them at the concluson of four years of servce. Rev. N. V. Hull wrote of addtonal and valuable accessons to the ranks of Sabbath keepers at Clarence, N. Y. He wrote, ~' am stll laborng n the cause of Sabbath reform, wth the best prospects to cheer me that have ever enjoyed. feel my whole soul engaged n the work." Elder S. S. Grswold wrote from ndependence, N. Y., March 12, 1844, of a revval n that church conducted by hmself and Elder James H. Cochran. "N ot amng to excte the passons," he wrote, "we enforced the plan truth of the Bble, untl t produced ts effect. Backslders cred for mercy, prodgals returned, and those at ease n Zon trembled. The anxous seat was crowded wth snners nqurng what they must do to be saved." Elder Grswold baptzed twenty persons. On the fourth page s a long artcle taken from the Baltmore Amercan about Morse's Magnetc Telegraph that had just been perfected and ~sed. The wrter of the artcle was thrlled as he wrote of the conveyng of news from the Democratc Conventon n Baltmore to Washngton, as soon as t was announced n Baltmore. He wrote, "All ths s calculated to put us upon the nqury nto the future agency of the wonderful contrvanc~ whch thus, wthout metaphor, annhlates both tme and space." Under "Congressonal Dongs" s the statement that n the Senate "a bll was ntroduced to purchase and construct Morse's Electro-Magnetc Telegraph between Baltmore and New York." Also that memorals were presented n the Senate "for and aganst the annexaton of Texas to the Unon." n four other paragraphs nformaton was gven about the bll presented for the annexaton of Texas, and dscussq\~ of the subject. Nearly a columl.of the paper s gven to "N ew York Prces Current." Here are quoted prces of ashes, bark, bottles, brstles, coal, coffee, cotton, cloth, drugs and dyes, feathers, fsh, frut, gran, hemp, hops, ron, lumber, naval stores, provsons, rags, seeds, tn, wool, etc. There was begun n ths frst Recorder the Obtuary Department, that has contnued through the century. Three obtuares were gven: Mrs. Susan Burdck of Mlton, W.
