"Overall, thnk the entre team was flat," talback Charles McCray sad. McCray led the Flames wth 99 yards and 18 carres. "Even though we won the game, was dsapponted wth the way played and the way all of us played." After the Tgers grabbed an early 3-0 lead on a 42-yard feld goal by kcker Bryan Dck, the Flames roared back, scorng 30 unanswered ponts. The Towson State cornerback lunged at Whte's ankles and appealed to have made the tackle, but Whte somehow reganed hs balance and easly sprnted nto the end zone for a 30-yard score, makng de score 7-3. 'The play was an opton where had the choce to go ether way," Whte sad. Whte led the Flames wth fve receptons for 101 yards. On the next possesson me Flames marched 63 yards on 13 plays capped by a one-yard drve up the mddle by McCray, gvng Lberty a 14-3 advantage. The Flames were aded on the drve by a 15-yard face mask penalty aganst Towson State. Whle the Flames' offense held the ball for more than 21 mnutes n the frst half, the Lberty defense was just as potent, holdng the Tgers to a total of 127 yards n thefrsthalf. 3 Page 2, The Lberty Champon opnon Wednesday, Oct. 25,1989 Edtoral "...Where the sprt of the Lord s, there s Lberty." Cornthans 3:17 Students must thnk n terms of bg pcture All the constructon that has been takng place n the ravne area has served to create Lberty Unversty's own verson of the "Dustbowl" era. However, keepng Lynchburg's usual precptaton level n mnd, we mght more accurately refer to the mass of red clay that seems ntent upon swallowng the sdewalk as the Mudbowl. (Students on the "Other Sde" of campus who have not had the opportunty to experence the wonders of ths snkhole should defntely take the tme to do so.) t would be rawer nave andrdculousto pretend that ths constructon mess has not caused a great many nconvenences n the lves of students. t s also unrealstc to beleve that we, the students, just wander around n the mud thankful of the fact we are gettng an arena and never complan about the stuaton. We are thankful for the arena, but the fact remans that some defnte dffcultes have been created by the constructon. Furthermore, these annoyances wll stay around for qute some tme. To begn wth, the muddy pt that now exsts between DeMoss and the Crcle-sde dorms s a far cry from the serene lttle thcket that used to grace that very spot. t s, for the tme beng, undenably an eyesore. Add the sghts and sounds of the constructon equpment to the scene and the vew only gets worse. Then, of course, Uere s the dust. But t's not just dust that floats through the ar and tckles your throat or causes a sneeze. Ths s more lke a flm that settles onto your clothes and skn. The dust hangs n the ar and makes t dffcult to breathe whle you walk through the constructon ste. Fortunately, the effects of the dust last only through the duraton of the walk past the ravne area. t s bascally a mnor nconvenence. Ran, however, s nevtable n Lynchburg. And, unfor nnately, t s a fact of nature that great amounts of red dust and great amounts of ran combne to form a superabun- dance of red mud. Mud, n general, s bascally harmlesss enough. But t s an nterestng characterstc of Vrgna's red clay that once ; t gets nto your clothes, t never comes out. Soakng, scrubbng, washng, bleachng and/or usng spot remover may help to lghten the clay to a rather unobtrusve orange; but the stan s there to stay. No one can deny the fact that these are all legtmate nconvenences experenced by the student body durng Lberty's tme of flux. They, among others, are annoyng ntrusons nto our lves, but there s a deeper, more mportant sde of the ssue. To the untraned eye that looks strctly at the ndvdual nconvenences, the Mudbowl s nothng but an ugly obstacle we must endure. However, when t s vewed through the bg pcture, ths mess of mud and constructon s a blessng from God and part of the realzaton of the dream. Upperclassmen remember Dobson's unque methods Not everyone shared the same exctement when a short man from Mchgan entered the Lberty Unversty Multpurpose Center on the mornng of Wednesday, Oct. 18. Most students were unaware of who Dr. Edward Dobson was to most of Lberty's upperclassmen. To those students who were here whle Dobson was here, he was a vtal part of student lfe. As hs chapel etquette proved, Dobson has of a very ladback approach to presentng hs message. Ths qualty allows hm to produce and then play "rap" commercals at LU. Upperclassmen remember ths approach through events lke the tme Dobson wore hs knee-hgh green wadng boots wth hs sut to a Sunday nght servce. And he was the man who convnced half of a Thomas Road crowd to run out after the servce to the local Dary Queen and purchase a blzzard. All of these thngs were done to help us remember some Bblcal prncple. t was under hm many upperclassmen found nspraton and gudance, support and encouragement. He had an ablty to get us tuned-up sprtually, physcally and emotonally to face the pressures of college lfe. A lst of prases could go on for ever. Dobson meant a lot to many of Lberty's upperclassmen; and when he announced he was leavng to pastor a church n Grand Rapds, Mch., we cred wth hm. Years later, t was a great feelng for us to see hm take the stage once more. Although we wsh he never left, t was wonderful to have hm back for just a day. ; Pctue" -^owg&vt* Frst Amendment protects everyone By KATHE DONOHUE Edtoral Edhor The freedoms guaranteed by the Analyss Frst Amendment * "-~have been an ncreasngly ntegral part of socety's conscousness throughout the 20th century. However, the ssue of freedom of speech and expresson has peaked durng the last two decades. As "rghts conscousness" has contnued to ncrease, the tendency has been for groups of people to jon together for the promoton of a certan deal or belef. Many of these subgroups vehemently declare ther rght to partcpate n a partcular acton or to voce a certan opnon or to commt an act that may not concde wth the belefs of others. At the same tme people wth opposng vews band together n order to declare that they have the rght to be heard on ther partcular convcton; thereby avodng a barrage of vews they do not want to lsten to. Eventually battle-lnes are drawn, the war begns, and sometme n the future a wnner emerges. t s smply an ssueof whose belef scorrect and whose s wrong. Rght? Not really. t s true that battle-lnes are drawn. However, those lnes often become dstorted and marred gven enough tme. n fact, thngs get sodstorted that t wll be vrtually mpossble to declare a wnner f the war were ever to come to a close. Realzng that the Frst Amendment operates as a gude or a road map and not as a mandate helps to keep the ssue n perspectve. A natural tendency exstsforpeople to accept the freedoms of the Frst Amendment only as they apply to ther own personal belefs and bases. t s common for people to beleve that ther deals are correct so no one else's should be tolerated. What people often fal to see as they are screamng "We have our rghts" s that people on the opposte sde of the ssue have therrghtsas well. Forexample, thesameFrstAmendment that guarantees the rghts of mllons of pastors to stand behnd ther pulpts and preach the Word of God every Sunday mornng also allows a collecton of athests to gather outsde the church and proclam "God s dead." See Frst Amendment, Page 3 Flag burnng proves emotonal ssue as legal battles rages By DANEL DOMBAK Feature Edtor Flag burnng s a complex and emotonal ssue. On one Analyss sde, the flag represents the Unted States and has been carred nto war and to the moon for our country. Amercans have an nnate love for the flag. n 1984 Gregory Lee Johnson challenged that noton by burnng the flag as a form of poltcal protest at the Republcan Natonal Conventon n Dallas, Texas. He was jaled for one year and fned $2000 for hs acton. Yet, convnced that hs acton was legal under the Consttuton, he appealed hs convcton through the court system untl t reached the Unted States Supreme Court Campus: ssues and Answers College presdents hold socety's most msunderstood poston Queston: What s t lke to be an unversty presdent? Dr. A. Perre Gullermn Answer: t s challengng. Herman Wells once sad that "a unversty presdent needs to have de wsdom of Solomon, de patence of Job, the strength of Hercules, but n any case de stomach of a goat" am not sure ths s totally an accurate profle; however, there s a great deal of truth n Wells' observatons. As de Amercan college presdency approaches ts 350th annversary n 1990, Dave Dyson and Ralph Krkman, n an artcle enttled "Presdental Prortes," sad "The poston remans one of de most msunderstood n contemporary socety." t s a test of endurance. Whle de challenges facng ndvdual presdents may vary, de opportunty to play a sgnfcant role n shapng the lves of the leaders of tomorrow provdes a sense of personal achevement. Change has to come from wthn. Mllons of Amercans became rate when the Supreme Court declared t lawful to burn the Amercan flag. But what exactly dd ths decson concernng freedom of expresson change? Allowng the flag to be burned n no way desecrates the freedom and democracy for whch t stands. The decson does not reverse patrotsm. Those who loved what the flag repre- -Flag burnng Contnued from Page 2 would not push for an amendment unless the new federal law was overturned by the Supreme Court. But just because the b-partsan push for the Consttutonal amendment has come to a close, t does not mean the ssue s dead. Emotons stll run hgh on both sdes, just as they dd when the Supreme Court debated the Johnson case. 'The hard fact s that we sometmes must make decsons we do not lke," Justce Anthony Kennedy wrote n hs majorty opnon. "We make them because they are rght, rght n the sense that the law and the Consttuton...compel the result" Justce Wllam Brennan, who also wrote for the majorty, renforced the freedom of speech guarantee. "f there s"a bedrock prncple underlyng the Frst Amendment, t s that the Government may not prohbt the expresson of an dea smply because socety tself fnds the dea offensve or dsagreeable," Brennan wrote. On the other sde of the ssue was Chef Justce Wllam Rehnqust who wrote the man dssent "Flag burnng s the equvalent of an nartculate grunt or roar that, t seems far to say, s most lkely to be ndulged n not to express any partcular dea, but to antagonze others," Rehnqust wrote. Whle the majorty agreed that flag burnng was protected under the Frst Amendment, the dssentng mnorty found t dffcult to unte under one sngle reason. "Sanctonng the publc desecraton of the flag wll tarnsh ts value - - both for those who chersh the deas for whch t waves and for those who desre to don the robes of martyrdom by burnng t," Justce John Paul Stevens wrote n a separate opnon. The symbolc value of the flag, recognzed by Stevens, became a central ssue n the Supreme Court case. Kath Drew, assstant dstrct attorney for Dallas County, focused depresses you, reduces your energy and prevents you from gettng your work done. College students are bg worrers. That worry leads to stress and college students are very bg on stress. n fact, the Nuprn Pan Report, the frst natonal study on pan n Amerca, documented that more people sents before the Supreme Court decson ths summer wll stll love t for the same reasons. Those who gave ther lves for ther country are no less loved and respected for ther sacrfce smply because the symbol of what they fought for can now be burned n publc. The logcal concluson of the Frst Amendment s that anyone has the freedom to express hmself n any manner he desres as long as hs actons do not volate any other laws secured by the Consttuton. The Frst Amendment protects the rghts of ctzens to express ther opnons; t does not force anyone to lsten. c %4 on ths aspect as she represented the State of Texas n the Johnson case. "We have the rght to preserve the physcal ntegrty of the flag so that t can serve as a symbol," Drew sad durng the court's oral argument sesson, "because ts symbolc effect s dluted by certan flagrant publc acts of flag desecraton. Veterans also hold the symbolc value of the flag n hgh regard. 'The flag s a symbol of the U.S. and when you destroy that flag, you destroy the prncples of our country," Don Braken, adjunct quartermaster of the Veterans of Foregn Wars chapter n Seattle, sad. Veterans feel they have been slghted after rskng ther lves to protect the symbol of the naton only to have someone else burn t. Amercans do have a hgh degree of respect for the symbolc value of the flag. mages of battle-weary Marnes rasng the flag at wo Jma and astronauts plantng the flag on the moon are ngraned n the memory of every Amercan. Yet Justce Scala faled to see the reasonng n the poston whch states the flags symbolc value can be reduced. " don't see how you can argue that he's (Johnson) makng the flag any less of a symbol," Scala sad durng the oral arguments wth Drew. " thnk when somebody does that to the flag, the flag becomes even more of a symbol of the country." Scala's reasonng s a bt more dffcult to understand than that of the veterans. Brennan expounded on t n are lkely to suffer stress and pan than any adult age group. Most of what we worry about s out ofourcontrol. Wecan'tcontrolother people's responses, a gradeaprofwllgve us, whether someone wll agree wth us, what they thnk of us, traffc, roommates, money.howwelook, grades, the future. The more we worry about thngs we can't control, the worse everythng gets. Remember ths rule of thumb: We can't control other people or external STOMACH 1 PANS DENTAL 1 PANS stuatons. But you can control how well you prepare for and respond to them. n other words, you can control your nformaton, atttude and actons. Worryng s made up of two words: what f. "What f...they...say no,... don't get the money,...the professor assgns,..." The key to beatng the worres s to change the what f s to "L.then's." f they say no...then hs majorty opnon wrtng: "We do not consecrate the flag by punshng ts desecraton, for n dong so we dlute the freedom that ths chershed emblem represents. "Such a decson (the Johnson case rulng) s a reaffrmaton of the prncples of freedom and nclusveness that the flag best reflects." Tme magazne's Walter saacson summarzed t best n the July 3 ssue: "ndeed, the decson that Amercans have the rght to desecrate ther flag could be seen as yet another persuasve reason not to do so." Beyond the major arguments of the ntegrty of the symbol and the Frst Amendment, there are several other reasons people support each sde of the court. Senator Orrn Hatch, R-Utah, supported the recent amendment on the bass that the act of flag burnng s not protected under the Frst Amendment. "Ths freedom has never been absolute," Hatch sad, referrng to obscenty and cases concernng lbel and slander. He sad the amendment dd not preventa sngle dea orthought from beng expressed, t merely prevented the flag from beng desecrated n order to express that dea. Sen. 7 Page 6, The Lberty Champon sports \ Wednesday, Defensve captan strves to mprove By DAVE DENTEL Champon Reporter He's saved games, broken school records and set a hard-httng example for hs teammates, yet Flames football defensve team captan Donald Smth remans wary about hs success. "There's stll a lot of room for mprovement," Smth sad n an ntervew precedng the Flames' contest wth Eastern Mchgan Unversty. Soft-spoken as Smth may sound about hs own achevements, others certanly are takng note. "Donald s a mult-talented guy," LU Defensve Coordnator Jerry Petercuske sad. "He's been all over the place," Petercuske added, commentng on Smth's play not only on defense but on specal teams, returnng kcks and blockng punts as well. t may be hard for Smth to mproveon hs already outstandng work atcornerback. A pre-season favorte for AU-Amercan honors, Smth stands as the team's second-leadng pass ntercepter wth three nterceptons n four games. He s also at the top n pass break-ups and tackles. However, Smth's most dynamc ndvdual trumph came durng hs role as kckoff returner on specal teams. Smth came three yards shy of school record wth hs 94-yard return for a touchdown n the Flames season opener vs. Ednboro Unversty. Before the game aganst Towson State, he was number one n the naton n kck-off returns averagng just over 37 yards per return. n the same game Smth also added to hs school record of sx blocked punts. The senor batted an Ednboro punt attempt nto the opponent's end zone where teammate Phl DeBerry fell on t for sx ponts. Not that Smth allowed any of these record-breakng achevements to go to hs head. " feel t'salljustapartof wnnng," he sad. "t's just requred of me f 'm dong my best." Smth s constantly tryng to better hmself at hs poston, he stated, and to learn from hs mstakes mstakes whch last year, he feels, helped keep the Flames out of the playoffs. One partcular game he regrets s lastseason'shard-foughtlosstojames Madson. Smth gave up a late touchdown pass, whch he feels sealed the Flames' loss. Ths year aganst JMU, Smth dd not commt the same error. Vndcatng hmself, Smth pcked off a JMU pass n the end zone wth seconds remanng, kllng the Dukes' lastchance scorng drve and preservng a Flames vctory. As defensve captan. Smth also concerns hmself wth the mprove- 'ment of the entre squad. Although the coaches feel encouraged by team mprovement. Smth wants more. "We have work to do," he commented. He does feel good, so far, about the season, he sad, but added, the feelng s "lke when you make a 'B' nstead of an *A. m But to make the grade, Smth sad, the defense just has to stay consstent and become a lttle more aggressve. As part of ths goal and n keepng wth Coach Ru- Flames Feedba c Jc Donald Smth tglano's phlosophy of never losng a fourth quarter of play, the team s mplementng the "Flames Quarter." "When we hold up four fngers," Smth sad, "that's the Flames Quarter." When fans see ths sgnal, he explaned, then they should know t s the last perod of play, and the Flames defensve players are bracng themselves to hold ther opponents scoreless untl the fnal horn sounds. Memores of Eastern Mchgan wll lnger forever ErcGreen'stouchdown catch that slayed the Eastern Mchgan gant last Saturday was truly a memorable experence. Kevn M. Bloye When the referees rased ther hands sgnalng a touchdown, remember lookng across Rynearson Stadum and seeng the people n the Lberty secton (probably close to a thousand) plng onto one another. That entre secton made more nose throughout the nght than the 12,000 or so EMU supporters. was sttng on the EMU sde n the press box squrmng n my seat tryng my hardest not to scream and shout (NCAA rules prohbt cheerng n the press box). The Eastern Mchgan secton was n total shock, not really sure how to react. Before the game, kept hearng "Who s Lberty Unversty?" or "You mean ths s Jerry Falwell's school?" At halftme wth the Hurons holdng a narrow lead, those who doubted that we belonged on the same feld were slenced. One man sttng n the stands spotted my gray Lberty Unversty sweatshrt and sad, " don't know where you guys came from, but your team s mpressve." At least three people stopped me that nght and asked f our team always attracted such a large followng of fans. told them there were hundreds of Lberty students from Mchgan, but lookng at the huge LU secton, knew that students from all over the country had made the trp. Two hours after the game, a water at a restaurant near me stadum came up to our table and ruled that the LU vctory was tanted. "The game wasn't far at all," he sad. "Your team had God on ts sde." The four Lberty students (ncludng myself) laughed at the proclamaton, but n my mnd knew t was true and was never prouder to be from Lberty. As you well know by now, some dot wrote n The Champon before the Eastern Mchgan game "Yes, the Flames wll lose, but they won't be embarrassed." After that game that same dot was verbally abused by members of de football team, the student body and faculty members for an entre week. As much as hate to admt t, am the dot But let me state my case before everyone agrees. Frst of all, Lberty and Eastern Mchgan represented a batde between two unbeaten teams; de problem here, however, s that de Hurons are a Dvson 1-A program whle de Flames, of course, are Dvson 1-AA. Second, de Flames were startng a redshrt freshman quarterback who had never started a collegate game n hs lfe. Breakng Robbe Justno n aganst a undefeated Dvson 1-A team s not exactly a walk-n-de-park task for anybody. Thrd and last, de Flames were playng n de Huron's backyard whch usually contans close to 20,000 new r _ rowdes and a band that never shuts up. The Flames are a second-year Dvson 1-AA program; the Hurons won the Calforna Bowl n To my surprse and 'm sure to thousands of other people n Lynchburg, the Flames smply rattled EMU's cage from de outset Justno was posed, confdentandbatded back from a horrendous thrd quarter. The EMU crowd was never a factor because tey were too shocked at what was happenng on the feld. The Flames, showng the sgns of a wellcoached, talented team, overcame all adverstes and beat Eastern Mchgan n almost every phaseof de game. So had a rough tme last week. was told that had no fath n de power of God and that was a trator for pckng aganst my own school. Even my close frends told me deserved t My fve-man panel of football experts known as de "Fabulous Fve" was even dubbed de "Fadless Four" because four of us predcted that the Hurons would wn. Two weeks ago de Knghts squashed Dvson 1-AA East Tennessee State, n last year's meetng between Lberty and Central Florda at Lynchburg Cty Stadum, Flames' talback Charles McCray scored on a 65-yard run and added a 9-yard run late n de game to boost Lberty to a 24-7 vctory. The game s best remembered for heavy dunder and hal n de second half that made de feld vrtually unplayable. Because of de treacherous condtons, Flames quarterback Paul Johnson went to the ar only seven tmes, completng four passes for 41 yards. Ths year the Flames are burnng brghtly wt a 6-0 record, not havng lost a game n more than a year (Oct 22,1988 vs. Western llnos). More amazngly, the loss of Paul Johnson has had hardly any negatve effects on the offense. Redshrt freshman Robbe Justno pcked up rght where Johnson left off, leadng de Flames to three consecutve vctores over Eastern llnos, Eastern Mchgan and Towson State. Ths week look for Johnson to return to Flames' offense as de startng quarterback. The Knghts, comng off a loss to second-ranked Dvson 1-AA Georga Southern, are led by quarterback Shane Wlls. Despte sloppy condtons, Wlls burned de Flames last year for 119 completons and 191 yards n de ar. Ths game has all de makngs of a major upset, and de Flames' must not go nto Florda thnkng about Youngstown State (next week's opponent).
