Dr. Brown took for hs subject educaton and ts meanng. He brought out the fact that educaton s not smply the subjects we take, but the use we make of them. A degree does not necessarly consttute an educaton. In llustratng ths fact Dr. Brown sad wc mght compare students and educaton to the lttle dog who ran down the track after a ralroad tran. After we catch t, what are we gong to do wth t*.' Educaton centers around these thngs, control, apprecaton, and understandng. Apprecaton of value o flfe s one of the realsatons of educaton. In fact an educaton s synonymous wth apprecaton. Dr. Brown brought to the attenton of the audence, our purpose n school and our duty as future educators, as well as leaders. Hs talk was nstructve and at the same tme hghly entertanng. Followng Dr. Brown's address the Chromatc Club gave a muscal selecton. Ths selecton seemed to appeal to the audence. I was beautfully rendered. Dr. Jarman gave the fnal talk of.the evenng. Hs talk he sad had no tdefnte subject. Bu. centered around jleadershp and ts part n campus lfe I Dr. Jarman sad that he realsed the j Importance of a fne type of scholarshp, but even more than ths be felt [the need of campus leadershp, based on campus servce. A NE}\ BEGINNING The old leaves have turned and we fnd ourselves near the end of the school year wth a clean page. It s a spur to our desre to serve to see our new offcers comng n wth bgger and better thngs before them. We feel that we can stand behnd them wth fresh energy and a new desre to help the lve up to and put over ther bg ams. The grls who wll hold the rens next year have all that those of ths year have accomplshed to begn wth. They have a brght torch to carry and f they lve up to ther predecessors they must carry t hgh. It s the desre of the student body, havng elected these new offcers, to have them carry the torch just a lttle hgher even than those who are handng t to them. We do not doubt that they have the ablty to do t and we must realze that we must play our part. It s up to the ctzens of the college to make the "Campus Servants," as Dr. Jarman calls them, feel that we really are backng them. The school sesson of 1928-"29 wll be a record year for S. T. C. as far as ellcent offcers are concerned. 0 HONOR SOCIETIES We have another honor socety n school. What are honor socetes lor? Recognton. They are noals toward whch we strve. They are deals whch strengthen our efforts for achevement. In the last several years S. T. C. has acqured three addtonal honor socetes. P Kappa Omega s the oldest. P Kappa Omega means "scholarshp, leadershp, servce." Alpha Delta Rho comes next, "character, accomplshment, nfluence." P Gamma Mu follows, "learners of socal scence." Our newest honor socety s P Kappa Delta, "the art of persuason beautful and just". Each of these three organzatons recognze achevement n dfferent felds. Recognton of servce to our Alma Mater through debate and oratory s the purpose of P Kappa Delta. S. T. ('. s fortunate n havng the Alpha Chapter of ths fraternty whch has chapters n about twenty-lve states. S. T. C. was gven the Alpha Chapter n preference to V. P. I. Do we not have hgh deals to lve up to n P Kappa Delta? 28 '28 30 THE ROTUNDA, \VEl)N, ESl)AV, APRIL 26, 1928 AND A LITTLE CHILI) CAN LEAD US SOMETIMES Not that we consder the freshman class as a lttle chld n a detrmental sense do we call them that n ths dssertaton. Vet. they are the youngest class n school fro mage and experence down here. However, they upheld a prncple Tuesday nght that t seems hard for the upper classmen to grasp. Ths s the prncple of the varaton of offce holders. Not that the frame grl sn't capable or worthy or re-electon, but that she s capable and worthy of a change whle another has the ablty to lead and releve the frst. The freshman class has grasped the Uemocratc, broad-mnded and sensble pont of vew on electons. Ther frst year has been a successful one, ther second s assured. Could not the older classes proft by followng the lttle chld's example. INTERCOLLEGIATE NEWS The?,'r!s at Harrsonburg State Teachers College are certanly fortunate The entre student body wll attend the annual Apple Blossom Festval at Wnchester. It s evdent that a tf»od tme s n store for them. The Vrgna Tech. "College", says the "Wesleyan Argus", "s lke a washng machne. You get out just what you put n, but you never recognze t." We extend our congratulatons to "The Breeze", publshed by the Harrsonburg students, for beng gven second place among college papers n the Columba Scholastc Press Assocaton. Ths assocaton comprses practcally all schools n the Unted States as well as several foregn ones. "The New Student" reports that the two edtors of "The Tower", lterary magazne of Dartmouth College, have resgned because New Hampshre laws by whch they are governed dffer from them on what s mmoral n lterature and what s not. After havng three of ther stores rejected, the edtors decded that the law wrrs every tme. "The Dartmouth" commented that the decency of New England, "whch throws nto bold relef the ncdental elements of smut, s a parastc fgure of hypocrsy." One of the bggest presentatons of the year at Msssspp State Teachers College wll be the comedy "As You Lke It". SPRING FEVER There have been moves, essays, poems, and even arguments receved on ths subject of sprng fever; but there s really only one way to fnd out exactly what a case of sprng fever s. Experence s the one way. I have just been subject to an attack of ths dsease. I mght add that I haven't as yet wholly recovered. It came upon me suddenly n the afternoon of one of those frst warm days, one of those days that trcked us nto gettng our prnt dresses out of the trunk. I started studyng for a test about 3:30 p. m. I read the frst page of the frst chapter wth eara-st concentraton. I "came to" when the 5:30 bell rang I hadn't even turned that frst page. I hadn't been asleep, I had been day dreamng, the surest symptom of ths prevalent dsease. If, my frends, you wsh for A's on your report n June, don't catch sprng fever. I. M. B. 4 RESOLUTION Sad, dull, and cold s my heart. My soul, f there be a soul, Is lke unto t. Love Has done ths to me, Ths wondrous dol wth clay feet I wll have no more of love My lfe wll be sham Tnsel and trckery For of what jjood s a heart If t aches? L. M. B. '330 INFATUATION One nght I loved you. I close my eyes and feel The throbbng of your lps; I ca/.e nto the depths Of eyes that speak of love. But n ther ntensty I can read Vows bubbles born of ar That very soon wll vansh. And all that nght my dreams Brought me only you; Agan you held me n your arms And whspered thngs That were not true. But wth the chll, sane dawn I forgot, and I wonder f you dd too. L. R. R TO YOU To love and be loved s blss They say the best of happness. I am loved 'Round me gfts I see That were gven thru love for me. I love and from heavens above The moon whspers to me about love And yet, not for me has been blss Or yet have I found happness. Oh, I love and am loved, 'ts true But he loves me and I love you. D. L. '31 WHEN I WASTED TIME ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF A LESSON Very methodcally I placed the necessary apparatus on the table book, paper, pen. and nk. I drew the char up to the table and carefuly, very carefully, straghtened the scarf to the exact angle. Thnkng thngs were n shp-shape, I lstlessly sat down; but, no, too much lght came through the wndow so I got up and lowered the shade. Surely no more studous envronment could have been found than n my own room at that tme, but to me nothng appeared to be correct. Nevertheless, pen n hand, I preceded to wrte. The topc was one n whch I had no nterest, one about whch I dd not care to learn, consequently concentraton came hard. "A hgh tartv s not justfable," I wrote laborously. Where n the world was Jane gong so dressed up? Lucky grl. She had no theme to wrte. Why, oh, why, dd I have to be the one? I contnued to glance dly out of the wndow, seeng no one n partcular, ndulgng n a great wave of self-pty. Hm! It looked as f t mght ran. I wondered how Ll would get home wthout an umbrella. A sudden thought struck me. I would take her an umbrella! Wth joyous abandon I rushed forth nto the ran, heedless of deserted lesson and a prckly conscence. Needless to say my grade the followng day was somethng I never mentoned. VIRGINIA ELLIS From the tme \ rgna entered S. T. C. she has been hel dn the hearts of all who know her as a true, straghtforward, fathful. lovable frend. She s one of the busest people on campus, perhaps because she doesn't relnqush a task untl t s complete. Few people hold before them deals as hgh as Vrgna, and rare are the people who lve up to them as she does. We have found her Mm-, re, whatever the COSt, and we admre her for t. For her radan smles at the approach of week-ends, there s a reason for Vrgna lovej her jaunts to North Carolna. A member of P Kappa Omega for three years, her scholastc record s an envable one. She s also a member of Alpha Delta Rho and Delta Sgma Ch. She served >n the Student Councl as v ^-presdent, and or. the Y. W. C. A. Cabnet. S. T. C. s proud of Vrgna. We are confdent that she wll brng honor to herself and her college as she makes her place after graduaton, a true daughter of Alma Mater. VIOLA GRAY WOODSON Who would ever thnk of Jack as Vola. Those who mean the most to us usually have a 'uck-name because a nck-name seems to draw them closer to us and Jack s surely one who s close to our hearts. The Moon was shnng rather mstly because of the recent Rane. Well, I started the Ball rollng by askng what the Bunch was dong now. The frst one I asked about was a rather Wley fellow who could always get out of a Peck of trouble wthout payng the Prce. He never seemed to have to Wayte for anyone. Lfe s but a long vacaton To the man who loves hs work; Lfe's an everlastng effort To shun duty to the shrk. To the heaven's best romancer Lfe's a story ever new; Lfe s what we try to make t Brother, what s lfe to you? The followng s an "Essay on Men" taken from "The <', >pher Countryman," student publcaton of the I'rverst) of Mnnesota; Mm are what women marry. They have two feet, two hands, and sometmes two wves, but never more than one collar or one dea at one tme. Lke Turksh cgarettes, men are all made of the same materal) the only dfference s that some are a lttle better than others. Generally speakng, they may be dvded n three classes: Husbands, bachelors, and wdowers. An elgble bachelor s a mass of obstnacy entrely surrounded by suspcon. Husbands are of three varetes: przes, surprses, and consolaton przes. Makng a husband out of a man s one of the hghest plastc arts known to cvlzaton. It requres scence, common sense, fath hope, and charty, especally charty. It s a phychologcal marvel that a soft, fluffy, tender, volet-scented, sweet lttle thng lke a woman should enjoy kssng a bg, awkward, stubbychnned, tobacco and bay-rum scented thnk lke a man. If you flatter a man t frghtens hm to death, and f you don't t bores hm to death. If you permt hm to make love to you, he gets tred of you n the end; f you don't he gets tred of you n the begnnng. If you beleve hm n everythng you cease to nterest hm, and f you argue wth hm n everythng, you cease to charm hm. If you beleve all he tells you, he thnks you are a fool, and f you don't, he thnks you are a cync. If you wear gay colors, and rouge, and a startlng hat, he hestates to take you out, and f you wear a lttle brown hat and a talor-made he takes you out and stares all evenng at a woman n gay colors, rouge, and a startlng hat. If you jon hm n hs gates and approve hm n hs smokng he swears you are drvng hm to the devl, and f you don't approve of hs smokng and urge hm to gve up hs gates he vows you are drvng hm to the devl. If you are the clngng vne type, he doubts whether you have a bran, and f you are a modern, advanced, and ndependent woman, he doubts whether you have a heart. If you are slly, he longs for a brght mate, and f you are brllant and ntellectual, he longs for a playmate. If you are popular wth other men, he s jealous, and f you are not he hestates to marry a wall-flower. Gosh dang the men, anyhow. Va. Tech.
