He wll fly to Kngston, Jamaca, the next day to become a member of the staff at Crandall Hgh School. When makng applcaton for servce he wrote: "At Young Adult Pre-Con n 1972 became convnced of somethng had never accepted before - that the Lord has a defnte. plan for each of our lves. Though had loved Jesus and tred' to follow Hs teachngs, when examnng my own lfe felt that somewhere had 'mssed the boat.' was not happy, am' convnced, because' stopped short of gvng my lfe lterally to Jesus. had not asked Hm to come nto my sprt. Consequently, 1 was followng my plans and not Hs plan' for my lfe. "n Colossans 3 :3, 4 we are told that Chrstan regeneraton nvolves, n some sense, an actual death of self and brth of Chrst wthn as a replacement of self. The reason dd not experence the 'peace of God' promsed n Colossans 3: 15 s that the concerns of self had too strong a tyranny n my heart.. "Snce then have asked Chrst to enter my lfe, to ad me n feelng Hs presence. have been gvng more tme readng the Bble, wth the understandng that the 'new man' s 'renewed n knowledge' (one way of sayng that he s renewed n Chrst snce Chrst s the Logos -the Word made flesh).'. "1 asked God to show me what to do wth my lfe. 1 wanted to be sure am lvng for Hm. t was then that 1 learned of the need for someone to serve n Jamaca. Somehow felt that God had. ' smgled me out to help there n whatever way needed. " ntend to examne my lfe very closely from now on n every respect, to Kenneth Burdck speaks at Mlton on... THE ROLE OF MSSONS Snce am gong to be nvolved n mssons have been examnng the role of mssons n the Chrstan Church and as a part of my ndvdual fath. What were my mpressons of mssons before decded that was gong to get nvolved?. One tends to thnk of mssons n a stereotype cotext.mssons are a gft of one commult to another communty. The word glft S thought of n the con- ) text of charty and communty n 'the concept. of a local church one denomna- ' ton, etc. t wll be useful to examne ths dea wtl an emphass on the words gft and communty. Let us do t n the context of the Conference theme book ths year - Ephesans. Just last week we were readng from the fourth chapter. would lke to read verses 1-6 from the Jerusalem Bble. How does ths chapter speak to the 'deas of gft and communty and the context of mssons? ", the prsoner n the Lord, mplore you therefore to lead a lfe worthy of your vocaton. Bear wth one another chartably, n complete selflessness, gentleness, and patence. Do all you can to preserve the unty of the Sprt by the peace that bnds you together. There s one body, one Sprt, just as you were all called nto one and the same hope. when you were called. There s, one h Lord, one fath, one baptsm, and one God who s Father of all, over all, through all, and wthn all. Each one of us however,,. nsure thar t s Chrst's plan am followng rather than my own. 1 have dedcated myself to lvng for. Hm, followng. whatever path He may show me." 3

3 ! Y ' (! -J!,. l.. f has been gven hs own share of grace, gven as Chrst allotted t. t was sad that He would: when he ascended to the heght, he captured prsoners, he gave gfts to men. When t says, 'he ascended,' what can t mean f not that he descended rght down to the lower regons of earth? The one who rose hgher than all the heavens to fll all thngs s none other than the one who descended. And to some, hs gft was that they should be apostles; to some, prophets; to some, evangelsts; to some pastors and teachers; so that the sants together make a unty n the work of servce, buldng up the body of Chrst. n ths way we are all to come to unjty n our fath 'and n our knowledge of the Son of God, untl we become the perfect Man, fully -mature wth the fullness of Chrst.hmself. Then we shall not be chldren any longer, or tossed one way.and another and carred along by every wnd of doctrne, at the mercy of all the trcks men play and ther cleverness n _ practcng decet. f we lve by the truth and n love, -we shall, grow n all ways nto Chrst, who s the head by whom the, whole body s ftted nd joned together, every jont addng ts own strengtb, for each separate part to work accordng to ts functon so the body grows untl t has bult tself up n love.", Now _ ths _ passage nvolves a lot of thngs besdes gfts and communty and the context of mssons. But there are some mpotant thoughts about these deas n ths chapter. _, ' Frst of all, f you thnk 'of mssons n the terms merely of one communty to another, you 'see the dea that Chrstans are all n one communty. t s very hard fo us to say, "We are gong to do somethng for those other Chrstans over there." n the _ ultmate Chrstan sense '!hereare no separate communtes; There S. one. communty - a communty of fath Wth the same baptsm and the same Lord. ' The dea of gfts here seems to apply more closely to mssons. t talks about workng n the church - some' beng apostles, some prophets, some pastors and -teachers. The dea -s not the one we -usually assocate' wth mssons, OUf gvng somethng to someone else. Rather t s that frst of all the Lord has gven us somethng: the prvlege, the experence. of servng n mssons, wthn the body o.f Chrst. Therefore ths gft s a gft to that person who s nvolved rather than merely the gft of that person to those he s servng. Frst of all our communty s one of the body of Chrst. t s a unty whch knows no barrers. The stereotype that one communty sends to another communty works aganst ths. Tbbe Maddox n her dscusson of mssons n a recent Sabbath Recorder ponts to the fact that we as Seventh Day Baptsts have always prded ourselves on beng ndvduals and that ndvduals determne what the church does, etc. Ths atttude, and the one that's gven n Ephesans four - that each of us s a part of the body - show that ndvduals functon as well as groups and that ths functonng s wthn the general communty. We mght apply ths to mssons by sayng that t s not necessary merely to tran an elte corps of a -few ndvduals n mssonary sklls. We don't have to work merely through those few dedcated executves n our msson boards. OUf actons do not have to be lmted to the organzed and the structured., Ths -rases the queston then; can all partcpate n mssons? What s the natpre of ths partcpaton? Whle ths s somethng know less about, one m.portant role was' mentoned n a recent Sabbath Recorder. n the artcle on "P. S. Means.Prayer Support" (January 6, 1973, p.5-6) a mssonary was quoted, "Through your money you provde the means whereby we can work; through your prayers you provde, the power whereby we can work." Hen s a very defnte w.ay anyone can partcpate n any actvty of the church -- by prayng for ndvduals who have taken the responsbltes and prayng for new avenues of approah. Ths s one thng that should not be set asde. t s very mportant. f ths s one role, how can t be facltated? Several of our churches have held mssonary conferences or specal programs on mssonary actvtes. n ths way people become aware of what s gong on n mssons. They recognze ndvduals who are nvolved and assocate ther own Chrstan fath' and ther own actvtes n the local church wth w1at s gong on the same sort of communtes n other places. Ths s one way, through prayer. Another way s through contrbutons. Ths s perhaps more relevant now snce' the devaluaton of our currency. Our mssonares, as everyone else overseas, wll face new but contnung needs. (The Mssonary Board polcy has provson to compensate for such changes and t s beng done.-ed.) We can also dedcate ourselves n dfferent ways - wrtng to people that we ' have come to know at Conference from overseas churches; functonng wthn the body of Chrst n ways that may not be very dramatc or even very sgnfcant; beng aware that there are Chrstans, who are gong through the same struggles, the same hopes, that we have here n our own church. N ow there s one more thng. n Ephesans, ths dea of communty s really a way.of fulfllng our fath. t says that we wll grow -n all ways n Chrst. Mssons s certanly one avenue for dong ths f we are one n the Sprt, f our communty s a gft n tself. t doesn't say that the role of apostle or of teacher was forced on people. t s a gft from the Lord. Ths mples that we acheve fulfllment n antcpatng the work. Ths fulfllment also comes when we assocate our own hopes wth those, of Chrstans everywhere. My emphass on mssons would be that mssonary actvty s not our gft to 'Chrstans over there. t s the gft of communty from the Lord, both to us and to those people. We are one n Hm. Ths s certanly a very defnte way that we should all try to grow n all ways nto Chrst n the' comng year. Comng and Gong The Conference commttee on Foregn Mssons nterests at Denver last August suggested, "as a 'rule of thumb,' that for each worker wthdrawn from one feld, a worker be sent to a new or growng feld.",wth God's drecton, ths s beng partly fulflled. ' Dedcated worker Elzabeth Maddox, R. N., has returned from Malaw afur an eghteen-month term of servce. She met wth the Afrcan nterests commttee of the Mssonary Board and was honored at a recepton tea on Sunday, Aprl frst. At the same tme, Kenneth Burdck was also honored. He was able to meet - wth the Amercan Tropcs, commttee of the board pror to the recepton. On Aprl 2 he flew to Kngston, Jamaca, to - serve for two years as a dedcated worker, teachng at Crandall' HgbSchool. n June 1973 Nurse Sarah Becker completes her second term of servce at Makapwa Medcal Center, Malaw, Afrca, and wll, return on termnal furlough. Ths wll leave the metlcal work wthout a, regstered nurse. There has not been a resdent M.D. -snce the Vctor Burdcks returned n t may be another two years before Mr. Harold Dzuman completes hs R.N. tranng n England and returns for servce. Who wll fll the gap? A couple s needed! Whle specfc postons are not as mperatve, we wll have not been able to respond to the call from N orthem Malaw, "Send us a mssonary!" Certan factors are under study. But, f our response s to be postve, we must have ndvduals who are commtted, traned, and led -by the Lord to Hs,vork there.. Who? ndvduals are urged to correspond wth the Mssonary Board, sharng ther sense of call and nterest n msson work. t s -only wse to plan ahead and to receve counsel and help n adequate tranng and preparaton for' the demandng and needed task of representng our Lord on Hs feld of call. We would welcome your letter and wsh to enter nto _ prayerful study of possbltes and opportuntes ,. :,".'.''',

You asked me for some human nterest stores from our experences here. t s dffcult to select thngs that mght be of nterest to you people. Anyway, shall try. Chubby, sx -month - old Rose was brought to us wth severe darrhea and a fever of 103 degrees. We treated her for malara and the darrhea. The next mornng she was cool and feelng much better. By noon she was cryng for food and the mther sad that she had fed her porrdge twce already. We asked about her nursng and that brought out the mother's problems at brngng up ths. chld. The' left breast was an abnormally formed and nonfunctonng lttle organ - about a fourth the sze of the rght breast. The rght breast had dred up when Rose was three months old. She had fed the chld canned mlk for sx weeks then slowly weaned her onto porrdge.. We dscussed how she could add protens by addng ground peanuts nto the corn flour and also beatng an egg nto the porrdge, also how to rub greens through a seve and add to the porrdge. t all sounded new to the mother but she sad that she wanted to try t. We gave her a pnt of corn-peanut flour and added mlk powder and soya bean flour. The mother cooked some porrdge and came " t? me wth a bg smle sayng that Rose lked the new porrdge very well. Fortunately, the darrhea left as soon as the malara' was under control and Rose went home.?n the thrd day wth her mother promsmg to attend the Under-fve Clnc to learn more about chld feedng and care and to get mlk powder and soya flour. Eght-year-old Belna was brought to the Female Ward wth the complants of eakness, abdomnal pan, and no appe-. tlte. She had already been treated n our General Clnc for roundworms and malara but some problems had contnued. The. mother was very anxous to feed Belna but the porrdge always ended up all over' her neck and chest.- forced feedng just ddn't work. Fnally, after tryng mlk, tea, wjth mlk, and cocoa, we asked what she would lke - but we, lke her mother, got more shruggng of her left shoulder.. (She had eaten only green mangoes wth salt so far.) Fnally she agreed and dd eat an egg wth some n'sma. Yesterday mornng she greeted me wth, "Today shall need to eat bread and boled rce" (two very specal. a delcaces n her famly). thnk all our vtamns were begnnng to mprove her appette. Durng the mornng we found she was loaded wth hookworm and n the afternoon she had a dose of our. new worm medcne, Ketrax. Ths mornng she s eatng qute well and wll. go home wth her mother. We hope the mother has learned how to keep the chld from agan havng worms May the Lord bless each of you, and nay you experence Hs nearness. The new scence buldng at Makapwa prmary school. A Co\1 to the World By Pastor.Leroy Bass We need to know more about Jesus Chrst; He s comng agan, and the tme of Hs comng s very near. Weare told to "wtch and pray 'tl He come." f we c.ould somehow catch a vson of the love of the crucfed Chrst, the sufferngs, the agony and' heart-rendng He went through for you and for me, then. we would not hestate for one nstant to gve ourselves to Hm. How He loves us; He has gven Hs all for us. t took Hs lfeblood to save us. Shall we stop to count the cost?. f only each and everyone of us could catch a vson of all that Chrst has done. for us, how He empted Hmself, how He suffered and ded upon Calvary's cross,,then how quck we would be to flng ourselves at the foot of the Cross, and say, "Oh, Jesus, save me. am so unworthy, but gve myself to Thee." We would not make the Lord wat our argung, our ndfference, or lve of the. world. We would see that eter al lfe s far nore. mportant than anyt lng else. We've got to see our mserable selves as,we really are, and then behold the lovely. character of Jesus 'Chrst. "0 wretched an that am! Who shall delver me from thy body of ths death? thank God through Jesus Chrst our Lord" (Rom. 7: 24-25), ' Jesus sad:. "The harvest s plentful." J esu1j s referrng to the potental harvest, t the laborers go out to do the work of the Lord. Then, and only then wll the potental. harvest become an actual harvest. Jesus goes on to say, (Matt. 9:38) 'Tray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers!" Jesus sad: "And have other sheep, that are not of ths fold" (John 10: 16). These "other sheep" are Hs by creaton, but not yet Hs by redempton. He wants them to become a part of Hs "one flock" that wll be translated at Hs COff-. ng n glory. 7

Ths commttee s to be one of the standng commttees of the board, and wll n all lkelhood become one of the most mportant arms of ths organzaton. The dutes of ths commttee nclude the. responsblty for studyng and', nvestlgatng P?tental msson enterprses; counselng Wth the executve vce-presdent on procedures; mantanng an awareness, or even ntatve, on newly presented opportuntes and, wth study, make sound recommendatons to the board. Mnor revsons n long-standng ol Ces were made recently so that the responsbltes of ths commttee can be mplemented, brngng the possble acton of the board nto lne wth current realstc stuatons as they exst around the world. Add to ths ncreased flexblty the. hope that our executve vce-pres dent wll accompany the executve secre- ' tary of the S. D. B. World Federaton on a trp around the world (n 1974) for frst-hand nformaton and contact wth many sster groups and prospectve felds of work, and we have a year, and a decade, to look forward to wth antcpaton. Elzabeth Maddox, R.N; One of my bggest wshes s that those "back home" mght see people n foregn felds realstcally. And, suppose, my topc of Malawan cookery mght alenate some, rather than accomplsh my wsh, snce t s qute dfferent' from Amercan cookng. But, dear reader, f you could put yourself n the barest ktchen magnable - wth only an open wood flame, a few alumnum cookng pots, a large water pot, a wooden spoon, perhaps a tn cup and some tn cans -, and jon me n dscoverng how much' alke we and the Afrcans are, even n adaptng to a stuaton such as ths. My favorte experence n an Afrcan ktchen' was on a youth pcnc last July. There were three' grls besdes myself chosen to cook for our allboy' youth group. As e hked several mles, could see everyone ahead wth our cookng utensls on ther heads, and by the tme arrved, some boys had begun gatherng kun (frewood). Others had selected long poles for the "ktchen," and two trees a yard apart had been selected. Quckly poles were ted securely wth strpped bark, horzontally and laterally. From each tree, the poles met another pole n the ground between the trees, formng a two-sded wall Another wall was extended from the left tree and soon all was covered wth grass. t was a fne wnd shelter and all done n about twenty mnutes or less! Two small holes were dug wthn the shelter and three rocks placed around each for cookng pots to go over. the fla1j1e. 'm sure some of our readers are knowledgeable n the fne art of fre;.makng ('m, stll not), but thank goodness these grls make them, startng, from the formatve years. As for our menu, breakfast was smply sweet potatoes and weak cocoa. Whle the boys recreated, two of them kndly slaughtered the two chckens brought along, and the grls cleaned them out. They took care 'not to throw out anythng from the chcken except ts rocks for dgeston. Usng twelve-nch squat pottery 'bowls,,they boled the, peces, then chopped up tomato, and onon on a flat rock, tossed, these n along wth some curty powder and sal t and left them to contnue cookng. The next tem to be made, called n'sma, s what Malawans call "food." N a real meal s eaten, wthout t. t s made from corn dred on the stock, pounded, wnnowed, soaked, dred, and ' ground. Cookng ths przed fne flour s an art as these grls weren't about to let me mss. They weren't havng the boys laughng at ther n'sma, ether. A thn porrdge s boled frst for a long tme and gradually handsful of flour are sprnkled n the pot wth constant strrng., What was to do comes next - the grls must have a helper each to put n more flour as they volently str wth long wooden spoons, the quckly thckenng mass. Much ar s whpped n to make t lght. f allowed to cool at all, t becomes glue-lke, so t s quckly scooped out n mammoth servngs wth a specal wooden spoon and allowed to set ths way for servng. Malawans' use t lke men use bread at home, to soak up gravy or pck up a bt of food. And the greatest part of ther det at every meal n ths starch. N'sma and curred chcken was our lunch - delcous! Supper was a smple bowl of boled rce, sugar and mlk - oh, yes, " and Brtsh tea (mlk, sugar and' a lttle tea)., The boys wanted some knd of food for entertanment, so they asked me to mx up a quck bscut dough, and they cooked the small, globs on long stcks over an open fre - so clever. t's nterestng to me how these women can cook so easly wth such smple tools. They use a larger pottery pot for an oven' - the bottom s flled wth sand, and heated, then a tn can wth batter s placed on the sand and the pot s covered.. Glowng coals on top and bottom make for a quck and effcent bakng tme. The more, dscover bts of, Malawan lvng, such as ther cookng, dscover people much lke me and mne. hope ths lttle narratve, dear reader, has n some way helped you, too to see Malawans more realstcally.
