Van Horn Secretary W hen a group of Chrstans wth the same basc belefs comes together to organze as a church one of the verv frst thngs they seek to accomplsh s the drawng up of a covenant. The church covenant s an agreement concernng the dutes of the members toward the church and each other. Frequently covenants nclude some doctrnal statements as well. Most Seventh Day Baptst church covenants are bref and smply wrtten. Recently' the Conference commttee on Fath' and Order sent a questonnare to the churches regardng the functon of ther covenants. Some of the questons asked were: When was the covenant adopted? Are new members ntroduced to the covenant pror to jonng the church? Are new members expected to sgn (or agree to) the covenant? s there a renewal of the covenant for the members? and s the covenant used on any perodc bass n worshp and/or study lfe of the church? These questons no doubt wll prove helpful to all as we seek to make our covenant relatonshp wth the church and each other more meanngful. The Mll Yard Church (1617) n England evdently orgnally used the Ten Commandments as ts covenant. The church records show ' that 'on. the frst day of the month (September 1698) the Ten Commandments were set up n the meetnghouse.' n 1704 the Ten Commandments together wth Matt. 5: 19; Rev. 12: 17; 14: 12 are mentoned' n such a way as to leave the mpresson that these were the Church's Artcles of Fath; and ndeed t seems never to have had any other. CHURCH COVENANTS by ] ohn D. Bevs We have not been able to locate a covenant as such for the Newport R.l. (1671) church. However the Pscataway N.J. church founded n 1705 no doubt gves a clear vew of covenants n colonal tmes among Seventh Day Baptsts. Ths covenant s enttled Artcles of Fath. We beleve that unto us there s bul one God the Father and one Lord Jesus Chrst who s the medator bel ween God ana manknd and that the Holy Ghost s the Sprt of God. 1 Cor. 3: 6 1 Tm. 2: 5 2 Tm. 3:6 2 Peter 1: We beleve that all Scrptures of the Old and New Testaments gven by nspraton are the word of God-2 Pel. 1: Tm. 3: 16 Mark 7: 13 1 Thess. 2: 13 Acts4: and are the rule of fath and practce. m. We beleve that the Ten Commandments whch were wrtten on two tables. stone by the fnger of God contnue to be the rule of rghteousness unto all men. Matt. 5: Malach 4:4 James 1:21 Rom. 7:25 Rom. 3:31 Rom. 13:8 910 ph.6:2. V. We beleve the sx prncples recorded n Hebrews 6: 1 2 to be the rule of fath and practce. V. We beleve that the Lord's Supper ought to be admnstered and receved n all Chrstan churches. Luke 2: 19 1 tor. 11: V. We beleve that all Chrstan churches ought to have church offcers n them as elders and deacons. Ttus 1: 5 Acts 6: 3. Vll. We beleve that all persons thus belevng ought to be baptzed n wat.er by dppng or plungng after confesson s made by them of ther fath n the above sad thngs. Mark 1:4 5 Acts 2:38 Acts 8:37 Rom. 6:3 4 Col. 2: 12.2 One of our newest congregatons Central S.D.B. n Upper Marlboro MD (1978) has the followng covenant: We the members of the Central Seventh Day Baptst Church as followers of Jesus Chrst do solemnly covenant: To accept the salvaton of God through the grace of Jesus Chrst and through no works of our own; To. accept as members of the famly of God Hs forgveness and love n our relatonshps; To care for one another as Chrstan brothers and ssters through joys.and grefs n the experences of lfe; To accept the Bble as the nspred revelaton of God provdng gudance for our lvng; To partake of the Holy Sacraments partcpatng n Chrst 5 resurrecton through Baptsm by mmerson and experencng the assurance of God's forgveness through the Lord's Supper tll He come; To celebrate God's everlastng gft of each Sabbath Day as our tme of refreshng for He the Lord Most Hgh s here; To delght n sharng the gfts that God has gven each of us for the good of the Church that the kngdoms of ths world mght become the kngdoms of our Lord and of Hs Chrst. Amen. No doubt as churches reexamne ther covenants some wll need revson n vew of the current feelngs and atttudes of the congregaton. n churches where the covenant s seldom used we would suggest at least a yearly readng perhaps n the form of a renewal servce. The church n Salem W.. Va. has done ths for some years and dscovered that t s very meanngful to verbally' renew the covenant wth fellow. belevers. May God bless us as we not only revew our church covenants but also our personal commtment to God and the buldng up of Hs kngdom durng J 3

3 - { f f ~. { The sermon topc appearng at head of ths wrtng notwth-. standng our ntent s nether to cast aspersons nor to toss bou-. quets n the drecton of those of the teachng professon. We take am rather at the consstency or lack of t n the moral behavour of all who have confessed Jesus Chrst as Lord and who consequently consder themselves Chrstan.?' Wth the emergence of nnumerable groups both nsde and outsde the ~rganzed church the nsttuton f you please the number of so-called professors of the Chrstan fath s legon. From the Scrpturally mmoral sectors whch practce such thngs as homosexualty free love and common-law marrage through the gamut of all the other so desgnated human freedoms many of whch ndulge n personal and materal explotaton the confessors Who cry out to Jesus Lord Lord are beyond countng. Klaus Bockmuhl' wrtng for Chrstanty Today's Current Relgous Thought has an artcle enttled CHRSTANTY HAS A MORAL BACKBONE.) n ths' artcle he lsts' three major ssues whch evangelcalsm today faces. Frst the queston of socalsm PRACTCNG PROFESSORS by Rev. Francs D. Saunders Berea West Vrgna and ts appeal to the younger generaton of evangelcals. Second the queston of the authorty of. the Scrpture and thrd to whch hs artcle s addressed moral lcense spreadng secretly a knd of evangelcal lawlessness that produces a Chrstanty wthout a change of lfe. He goes on to assert We need to face the fact that the landslde of mmoralty has reached the Church. Later n the same wrtng he says Many people never seem to be taught just what converson means. They regster a decson for Chrst but there s no content to t. Converson s a change of mood' of frends of opnons but not of daly lfe. t does not reach the level of behavour. t does not ncl ude moral change. Whle s may be. that the men. n the pulpt ncludng ths wrter have n days past done a dsservce to Jhe body of Chrst the Church through neglectng to adequately proclam the Person and power of the Holy Sprt t may be that today we. are dong an even greater dsservce n falng to relate that Person and that power to moral behavour n keepng wth the teachngs of Jesus Chrst and the Word of God. THE MORAL BACKBONE OF OUR FATH There are any number of Scrpture texts whch mght be adopted as a bass for our thnkng today. have chosen one whch to me s most pertnent because t comes as an admonton from the One who s the very center of our professon. Jesus sad Not everyone who sath unto me 'Lord Lord' shall enter nto the kngdom of heaven; but he that doeth the wll of my Father whch s n heaven.2 We mght have gone however to the wrtngs of Paul and used hs Now are ye lght n the Lord: walk as chldren of lght.3 On the other hand we mght have chosen the words of James Be ye doers of the word and not hearers only decevng yourselves.4 Whatever text mght be chosen however the admonton s bascally the same namely: The one who professes Chrst as Lord and Savor should back up hs professon by practcng the clear teachng of Jesus and the word of truth contaned n the Scrptures. n the Bockmuhl artcle from whch we have already quoted we fnd these words: We need to reaffrm that Chrstanty has a moral backbone. The Chrstan fath s nseparably joned wth God's absolute moral standards and wth a change of our relatonshp to socety. n the New Testament truth s alled wth justce and opposed to lawlessness. Accordng to Chrst the very truth of Hs message can only be dscovered n ts obedent applcaton. He here refers to John 7: 17 and the words of Chrst -f any man wll do hs wll he shall know of the doctrne whether t be of God or whether speak of myself. Mr. Bockmuhl contnues: Paul taught 'Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from nquty' (2 Tm. 2: 19). There can be no Chrstan fath wthout dstnct moral consequences.~' n the framework of the teachngs of Jesus Chrst and the Holy Scrptures t s evdent that a smple!ro!e~sonf!f fath on the part of the mdlvldualls not necessarly accompaned by consstent practce. So t s that Jesus affrms NOr everyone who sath unto me 'Lord Lord ' shall enter. nto the Kngdom ~f Heaven. SQ t s also that He sets a condton upon those who. profess to sncerely love Hm 'f ye love me keep my commandments. 5 Paul also put a condton on sprtualty by sayng f we lve n the Sprt let us also walk n the Sprt. n the Ephesan passage already quoted he declares Now are ye lght n the Lord but adds walk as chldren of lght ndcatng t seems to me that there may be some who clam to be the chldren who are not enterng nto the walk. Lkewse the James quotaton Be ye doers of the Word and not hearers only seems to suggest that there are hearers who have lttle or no part n dong. Whle t may be Scrpturally evdent that smple fath s set as the frm crteron for enterng the Kngdom t s also equally evdent that the professon of such fath s meant to ssue n a changed lfe wth Godpleasng behavour. John's Whowever beleveth n hm should not persh but have everlastng lfe6 taken n the context of all of the teachngs of the beloved dscple means much more than a smple uncommtted professon of belef. t ncludes also a dlgent walkng n the way and example of the Master whose name s confessed. Agan the same dscple says As many as receved hm to them gave he power to become sons of God. 7 assume that becomng sons means ''obedent sons. We can see from the wrtngs of Paul that salvaton comes to the nc;lvdual as a gft from God not dependent upon works. Hs declaraton By grace are ye saved through fath 8sets the scene for the salvaton of the snner and hs further confess'on and conce'pt All have snned and come short of the glory of God9 ndcates the unversal need; however the very ncluson of the element of sn assumes the fact that there s a better way and that a hgher moral standard should be the norm for behavour on the part of the one who confesses Chrst. Now t s true that wth the nflux of so many dfferng and often contrary Chrstan 'deologes t s possble for the professor to practce what choose to label cheap grace meanng that the professon of fath s not accompaned by a practce of the precepts of the same..' OBEDENCE THROUGH LOVE n the framework of the teachngs of Jesus Chrst and the Holy Scrptures professon and practcng ChrsTanty nvolve obedence to the revealed wll of God. Agan n our text 4 5

4 Jesus emphatcally affrms that the one who wll enter nto the Kngdom s he that doeth the wll of my Father whch s n heaven. t logcally follows that dong the wll of God s contngent upon knowng what s the wll of God. Both the Old and the New Testaments of the Bble provde ample evdence that the precepts embraced n the Ten Commandments form the bass for the wrtten revelaton of God's wll. Somehow the words of the Psalmst rng persstently n our ears The law of the Lord s perfect convertng the soul. 10 Gvng dlgent attenton to the answer Jesus gave to one who asked Whch s the greatest commandment of the law? we fnd that the love prncple whch He emphaszed covers the complete set of prncples ncluded n the two tablets of Old Testament law. To love God wth all the heart. soul mnd and strength was not only the avowed teachng of the Son of Man; t was also the appled prncple and purpose of Hs very beng. Thus the frst responsblty of the practcng professor s toward God hs Maker. Havng no other gods before Hm; not makng any mages or holdng any objects to worshp; not takng Hs name vanly; gvng sprtual attenton n keepng the Sabbath as holy tr).e; all ths s evdence that we have heard Chrst mplorng f ye love me keep my commandments 12 and have responded. Lkewse Jesus' second love prncple Thou shalt love thy neghbor as thyself was not only Hs avowed teachng but was most rchly exemplfed n Hs dealngs wth Hs fellow men. He sad The Son of man s come to seek and' to save that whch was lost 13and the. day by day performng of Hs' tasks s a testmony to Hs never-laggng love. Concernng the mportance of the law Jesus n that most mpressve of Chrstan documents the Sermon on the Mountsad Thnk not that am come to destroy the law or the prophets: am not come to destroy but to fulfll. For verly say unto you Tll heaven and earth pass one jot or tttle shall n no wse pass from the' law untl all be fulflled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments and shall teach men so he shall be called the least n the kngdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them the same shall be called great n the kngdom of heaven. 14 There s no place for doubt as to what law He has reference to as He pcks out specfcs from the ten and gves them true sprtual nterpretaton. Ye have heard that t was sad of them of old tme 'Thou shalt not kll; thou shalt not commt adultery' and whle t s true that He lsts other specfcs not lterally quoted from the ten all are closely connected wth the hgh standard of moral behavour He expects from those who profess Hs name ths same standard havng ts concepton n the law whch He came not to destroy but fll full of meanng. Concernng ths obedence prncple both Paul and James lend ther support. Paul's walk as chldren of lght speaks of consstent. moral behavour and he strongly emphaszed ths n wrtng to the Romans Be not conformed to ths wor14: but be ye transformed by the renewng of your mnd that ye may prove what s that good and acceptable and perfect wll of God. 15 One of the lessons personally have had to learn wth my health condton s to walk daly. Probably the frst queston the doctor asks me when go for appontment s Are you walkng every day? have found that when fal to walk daly feel the results of my neglect. How true ths s also n the matter of the sprtual walk of the Chrstan. Daly consstent moral behavour brngs sprtual health and satsfacton... Lkewse James' Be ye doers of the word s an admonton to obedence to the wll of God.. n the framework oj the teachngs of Chrst and the Holy Scrptures the Chrstan who practces hs professon enters nto the Kngdom. Ths s vtally mportant for the phrase enter nto the Kngdom has ~9th present and future connotatons. When John wrtes He that hath the Son hath lfe16 he affrms that the very acceptance of Chrst wth ts connotaton of the new brth has todo wth a new qualty n contemporary lvng. The same s the essence of hs declaraton Now are we the' sons of God! '; 17 There s somethng noble and beautful n the change whch has taken place n the belever's. experence. He has n a very real sense entered nto the Kngdom of God. Sprtually although he s stll present among. the same people vewng the same scenery and expendng the same tme he s n another world. That s hs purposes are ne~ hs d.es~es are dfferent the qualty of hs hfe s superor. Ths s precs~ly what Paul was referrng to when he spoke of the Chrstan as beng transformed by the r~newng of your mnds. The professor's allegance has been redrected toward Jesus Chrst now enthroned as Kng of hs lfe. A present enterng nto the Kngdom f you wll. t s sure however that there s a future Kngdom whch wll be even more glorous than that whch here and now we enjoy as the result of our professon and our practce. As Paul asserts to the Cornthans f n ths lfe only we have hope n Chrst we are of all men most mserable. 18 The Easter proclamaton of the unversal Church attests to the hstorcal fath poston t holds n regard to the Kngdom yet to come. Thus Jesus promses n my Father's' house are many mansons: f t were not so would have told you. go to prepare a place for you. And t go and prepare a place for you wll come agan and receve you unto myself; that where am there ye may be also.19 Ths we beleve and we all affrm wth John Beloved now are we the sons of God and t doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that when He shall appear we shall be lke hm for we shall see hm as He s. 20 t may be that there are those who are so heavenly mnded as to be of no earthly good but t cannot be so sad of the Chrstan who s a practcng professor of hs fath. Ths then s the purpose of ths message: that all of us who really love Jesus Chrst and have accepted Hm as Savor and Lord of our lves mght become most actvely nvolved n fulfllng the wll of God n our daly lves; that the qualty of our lvng mght be patterned after the teachngs of God's revealed wll and the perfect example of Jesus Chrst our Lord. May ths be our constant prayer that as professors of the Chrstan fath we mght be practcng the Chrstan lfe. 0 1 CHRSTANTY TODAY October p Matthew 22: 36ff 2 Matthew 7:21 12 John 14: 15 3 Ephesans 5: 8 13 Luke 19: 10 4 James 1:22 5 John 14: Matthew5: Romans 12:2 6 John 3: 16 7 John 1:12 16 John 5: John3:2a 8 Ephesans 2: 8 9 Romans3:23 18 Cornthans 15: John 14:23 10 Psalm 19: John3:2 FROM THE TME we were greeted at the door. had a dfferent type of feelng than any that 'd ever had George says a warmth that pulled us lke a magnet. 5 Saturday Aprl BAPTST MEN'S WORLDWDE DA Y OF WTNESS A'~D PRA YER. r---strvng Together n Prayer'-' - n a world that s torn by ts many dvsons where dsunty prejudce envy greed and hatred are evdent n all socetes and among all people the People of God strve' for unty n servce and wtness to the glory of the Name of Jesus Chrst. There are plenty of other men who'll be glad to get the work. Make up your mnd - take't or leave t!. My heart sad No you can't work on Sabbath but my head sad You have to support your famly. The struggle wth my conscence was bref as the clerk wated mpatently for my answer. '''ll take t sad. Strangely enough my sster-nlaw's luck had changed that same week. Esther had been notfed that her applcaton for t was so gradual. Frst we neglected famly worshp and studyng the Bble. work at a new varety store had been accepted and she was to begn work on ther openng day Saturday. She had hoped to begn durng the week and prove herself so dlgent that the manager would be wllng to grant her Sabbaths off. But now t would be mpossble to do ths. What could she do? She certanly ddn't want to work on Sabbath and yet here was an opportunty for steady employment and '''a chance for advancement for those wllng to accept responsblty accordng to the newspaper ad she had answered. Wth ths glowng opportunty at hand she felt she couldn't bear to face the scrubbng and dustng for that crotchety old woman any more. Perhaps later on when she had become establshed at the store the manager would be more wllng to let her have Sabbaths off. She must b~ there on openng day she reasoned. As my wfe sat ponderng the stuaton we were all n she tred to remember just when our sprtual experence had begun to deterorate. t was so gradual. Now we were even breakng the Sabbath. f we had been lvng as we should ths would never have happened Arbutus sobbed aloud. We mustn't go on lke ths or we'll be lost. Droppng to her knees she began to pray. She poured out her heart to her heavenly Father beggng Hm to forgve her for drftng away from Chrstan prncples and askng for strength to brng her lfe nto harmony wth Hs wll. At the factory that mornng my day had begun lke any other - by punchng the tme clock. But somehow as saw the abbrevaton for Saturday - SA T - over the date the letters seemed to leap out at 'me.. But must work my mnd was answerng or 'll lose my job. shoved the tme card back nto the rack and stalked over to my place on the assembly lne. Some of the men worked wth were qute relgously nclned. They were members of churches. One was a Sunday school teacher but he had been excused recently because hs pastor understood that he had to work on Sunday now. That was reasonable. A man had to support hs famly. vaguely wshed could somehow be as conscence free to work that day as they would be to work the next. One of the men began to whstle. Why dd t seem' to annoy me? often whstled at work myself. just ddn't feel lke whstlng today. Qh why ddn't he stop that? Suddenly re~lzed why hs whstlng bothered me - he was whstlng a hymn. The work we were dong was ol sandng. After the automoble' bodes were spray panted they were dred n a large hake oven. The next operaton was the ol sandng. Naturally the pant fumes were strong n the whole department. Strctly No Smokng sgns were clearly vsble n many places. Stll some of the men would go behnd the bake oven and have a smoke when the foreman wasn't around. t hadn't bothered me too much however untl that Saturday mornng overheard one of the older workmen swearng at them for sneakng back there to smoke. But f a dsaster should occur ' certanly wasn't ready to de. Why had broken the fourth commandment? Hadn't proved n the past that f kept God's commands He would take care of me? Why had. doubted Hm? Flled wth remorse slently prayed that f God would protect me that day and gve me another chance would never work on another Sabbath come what may. Across town n the new store Esther was surrounded by the holday atmosphere of an openng day. She seemed to be hearng the fourth commandment repeatedly Remember the sabbath day to keep t holy. '.. but she wouldn't lsten. Tryng to drown out that nner voce she began to hum along wth the tune comng from the nearby musc counter at frst not notcng what t was. Wth a start she realzed that t was Nearer My God to Thee. When at last t came tme to clo~e the store she kn~w what she must do. cannot come to work on. another Saturday she told the manager. Hs answer was just as fnal. Then you wll have to be replaced. She left the store wth mxed emotons. Dscouraged and dsapp()nted about losng the job that had seemed so promsng a few hours before she was happy that she had decded never to work on Sabbath agan. The fact that the hymn was popular at the tme had certanly worked together for good n mpressng our hearts. Dd all the events of that day just happen? We don't thnk so. None of us were surprsed to learn that my wfe's mother had also spent much ofthe day on her knees' prayng for her wayward chldren. Ths happened many years ago. They share n the preachng Bble studes and callng and they are always ready to counsel us and share ther love wth us n any crcums tance. Two specal prayer groups are held each week: the Men's Prayer Breakfast s held Monday mornng at 6: 30 and a Prase and Prayer Group for the lades meets Wednesday mornng. Once a month the two groups meet together. For some tme the Frday evenng servce has been a study of the Holy Sprt and Hs gfts to us as ndvduals. On Monday evenngs the Young Adults have a Bble study and the Young People on Wednesday evenngs. Begnnng January we are usng a devotonal booklet The Daly Walk whch s a readng plan and study whch enables the readng of the Bble through n a year. An explanaton n our bulletn says Whle a monthly readng gude wll be made avalable the readng goal wll be up to each ndvdual. There wll be no meetngs to attend nor reports'to be made! Whle small groups may decde to utlze the readng plan or an adult Sabbath School class the plan s prmarly desgned for ndvdual and/or famly use. At present thrty-fve are enrolled. On December 16 our annual Chrstmas party was held n the Fellowshp Hall when everyone sang Chrstmas carols and a play was gven by the Youth Fellowshp. The YF 'was also actve n solctng food and money for baskets and ad to needy famfes both at the Natvty Season and at Thanksgvng. As a group they went Chrstmas carollng. Perhaps the clmax of the year was the Sabbath of December 23 at the worshp servce. The front of the church was banked wth red ponsettas and a lovely Chrstmas tree at one sde. The Chrstmas tree always remnds us of God's creaton and the growth He desres n us'. The tree was lghted wth all whte lghts makng us thnk of Chrst the Lght of the world and was topped wth a beautful whte dove and small doves on many branches brngng to our mnds Chrst the Prnce of Peace. Rex Zwebel ALFRED STATON CHURCH GANS VSBLTY ' ALFRED STATON NY-The church recently ganed hgh vsblty wth a large announcement on the church page of the Hornell Trbune. The announcement whch was placed as a publc servce at no charge to the church featured a photo of the church and Pastor Rex. E. Zwebel. Pastor Zwebel was able to share the followng message wth the readers: We are nterested n what shows n our lves and n our churches. Whle some of us apparently want to be seen others are more nterested n programs to be accomplshed wthout any publcty for themselves. There must be a mddle ground. Perhaps the text for vsblty s Matthew 5: 16-HLet your lght so' shne before men that they may see your good works and gve glory to our Father who s n heaven. Whatever a church does or whatever a person does s not done to say Look at us but to' say f what we do attracts persons to the church of God then Hs wll s beng done. f The vsblty that the Trbune and the good people who make ths church page possble s good and the churches are thankful. Snce each church s lsted equally and wthout bas one mght magne that he could enter any church and Jeel rght at home. Whle t ought to be that way t smply s not so and for many reasons. Our churches reflect our hertage our experences our atttudes our devotedness our ntellgence our common sense our outsde relatonshps our state of mnd our use and understandng of the Bble and. so on and on. t s my belef that God can use all of the above f] the buldng of Hs church and Hs world but the true test of any church and of any person s the extent that we obey the Great Commandment TO LOVE TO LOVE GOD AND OUR NEGH BOR. Each church has t own peculartes that are attractve or unattractve to an ndvdual but ts true vsblty s the way they love God and each other and you. Let your lght so shne before men that they may see your good works and gve glory to your Father who s n heaven. JJ P. 17 o o o o o nce o' 0 ' WE ARE ABLE TO POSSESS THE LAND by Rev. A. L. Peat Mll Yard Church England J ' But Caleb queted the people before Moses and sad 'Let us go up at once and occupy t; for we are well able to overcome t' «Numbers 13:30). After ther long and tresome journey of forty years ' the chldren of srael had arrved at the border of Canaan. But before enterng the Promsed Land they wanted to make certan all was well. So t was that Joshua a great mltary leader selected twelve men as spes one from each trbe. They spent forty 0 days n lookng over the land. They found t to be a beautful land and very frutful. When they returned to ther camp they took proof of ts bounty wth the great bunches of grapes the pomegranates and fgs. They presented the products of the land to Moses and the o congregaton. However the spes gave an evl account whch shattered the hope of the people by sayng We are not able to possess the land. The other two men Caleb and Joshua stlled the people and urged that the land be taken. t s always sad that the majorty rules so ( was that the people hearkened to the report of the tmd and fearful ten who also reported that we cannot fght aganst them for they are all gants. These men were sprtually blnd they saw only the arms of flesh; whle Caleb and Joshua looked through the eyes of fath and reled on the power OD Almghty 0 God. 'These two brothers who were flled wth the power of God saw strong fortfcatons as no obstacle n the way of possessng the land. We can magne Caleb and Joshua repeatng the matte~ agan; Brethren we are well able to possess the land. They exercsed fath. n God whle the evl spes were flled wth fear. Satan's weapon s fear - God's weapon sfath. By fath thewalls of Jercho fell after they were compassed about for seven days. Jesus sad that f we have fath even as small as a gran' of mustard seed we can command a mountan; to remove and 0 be cast nto the sea and t wll be done. t s mpossble to please God wthout fath. These people had seen what God had done for them when He delvered them from bondage n Egypt. They had wtnessed the great mracles that God dd for them at the hands of Moses and Aaron they had seen the partng of the Red Sea. God had provded water n a barren land. He fed them wth the very' bread of heaven; He led them as a shepherd leads hs sheep. Hs presence was contnually wth them n the form of a pllar of fre by nght and a cloud by day. C'lleb and Joshua remembered these wonders and t gave them frm confdence. At ths tme Satan was hard at work among the people wth hs weapons of fear and mstrust. The enemy never tres of usng these weapons; he had used them n every age aganst the chldren of God and s stll usng them today aganst sprtual srael. Sprtual srael s explaned n Gal. 3: 29 And f ye be Chrst's then are ye Abraham's seed and hers accordng to the promse. God promsed Abraham that He would bless and multply hs seed and that through hs seed all the natons of the earth would be blessed. We who are redeemed by the precous blood of Chrst from the workhouse of sn under the hard taskmaster the devd are travellng on a smlar plgrmage. Our gong forth s not to' poss1;ss a kngdom n the land of srael. n the book of Danel we fnd how extensve wll be the nhertance of the sants. And the kngdom and domnon and the greatness of the kngdom under the whole heaven shall be gven to the people of the sants of the Most Hgh whose kngdom s an everlastng kngdom and all shall serve and obey hm (Dan. 7: 27). The way to the kngdom s a very dangerous pathway t s beset on every hand by wcked sprts. We have to fght aganst prncpaltes aganst powers aganst the rulers of the darkness of ths world aganst sprtual wckedness n hgh places. n our daly fght aganst the evl one we come n contact wth these satanc agences such as the agnostc the nfdel the athest the communst and the worldly-wse. But brethren fof all of ths be of good courage; we are well able to possess the land. Ths wll be the kngdom that each and every one of us has been prayng for. We are thankful that God has delvered us from the power of darkness and hath translated us nto the kngdom of Hs dear Son. Because t s through Hs Son that we have redempton through Hs own blood' even the forgveness of sns. Today the earth s corrupt before God and volence flls the world as t was before the flood (see Gen. 6: 11). We can see on every hand that ths world s fadng away gvng way for the establshment of the Kngdom of God. He has promsed to fll ths earth wth Hs glory even as the water covers the sea. And the sey.enth angel sounded; and there were great voces n heaven sayng The kngdoms of ths world are become the kngdoms 0 of our Lord and of hs Chrst; and he shall regn for ever and ever'' (Rey. 11:15). Now brethren we are standng wth Chrst on the mountantop of holness lookng over nto the Promsed Land ~here love peace joy anp happness regn. So brethren wth au the evl we have to fght aganst we are well able to possess the land whch wll be the sants' nhertance. And saw new Jeru- salem comng down from God out of heaven prepared as a brde adorned for her husband. And heard a great voce out of heaven sayng Behold the 0 tabernacle of God s wth men and he wll dwell wth them and they shall be hs people and God hmself shall be wth them and be ther God... He that sat on the throne sad Behold make all thngs new (Rev. 21:235). Ths wll be the condton of the home of the sants when they possess the kngdom. So you can see the comparson between ths earthly land of Canaan and the one that s to come; the nhertance of the sants. Ths was the cty that Abraham sought. Ths s the cty that hath foundatons whose bulder and maker s God. Brethren wth all the satanc hndrances let us go up at once and possess the land for we are well able to overcome t (see Rev. 3: 12). So as plgrms travelng toward our future homeland there w:l be great obstructons from the nvsble forces of the sprt world. They were workng aganst the chldren of srael and they are workng today aganst us. But greater s he that s n us than he that s n the world (see 1 John 4: 4). Brethren let'us go up at once and possess the land for we are well able to possess t. D page PUT SOME ACTON NTO' YOUR LOVE What does the word 'love' mean? asked Mrs. Patrck. The boys and grls of the Sabbath School class were quet for a moment whle they thought about what love means. t means carng about people sad Sharon. Love s dong nce thngs offered Blly. Love s ' a warm puppy gggled Mary and the rest of the class gggled too. Mrs. Patrck who had been wrtng the answers on the chalkboard laughed wth the rest of the class and sad That can be a knd of love too. But these other answers are about the way we act toward other people. What are some ways we can show our love? Ths tme the boys and grls thought even harder. We can obey our parents sad John. Sue sad We can share our toys wth our frends when we play. Good Sue and John sad Mrs. Patrck. Can you thj.1k of some ot~er ~~ngs? Mary was v~ry serous now and she sad We could do somethmg for somebody who s lonely. 'm glad you sad that Mary. Mrs. Patrck wrote Mary's answer on the board wth Sue's and John's. Can we do somethng as a class to show our love to someone who s lonely? Sue brghtened and sad When we go to see my grandmother n the nursng home see a lot of people there who seem lonely. Grandmother. s~ys that some of those people never have anybody VSt them. We could do somethng specal for them! That's a very good dea Sue. What do ~he rest of you boys and grls thnk about that? Snce t's so close to Valentne's Day we could make valentne cards for all the people and maybe even make decoratons to put on the tables where they eat. 0 Y ou chldren are full of good deas today! sad Mrs. Patrck. All those wh? thnk Sharon'~ dea s somethng we should do rase y?ur h~nd~; Every chld rased a hand and Mrs. Patnck Sad We need to make plans about what we are gong to do. Let's get started rght now! thnk ths s gong to be fun! And all the chldren agreed. 1: 1: 1: 1: 1: tr tr Maybe you would lke to do somethng specal for someone n a nursng home. Maybe your Sabbath class could do ths as a project. Or f you do t by yourself 0 you can pck two or three people to vst.. MLTON W WHTE CLOUD M How To Make Your Church Hum. Paul W. Powell. Nashvlle: Broadman Press 1977 $2.50. Paul Powell pastor of the Green Acres Baptst Church (Southern Baptst) n Tyler Texas has wrtten a short but comprehensve gude to effectve leadershp. t sn't just a book of easy technques rather Powell seeks to pont church leaders to God as the only source of true power. He presents n a readable and thought-provokng manner how to develop fresh and workable methods and plans for growth-to make the church hum. Some of the chapter ttles are:.wake Up the Worshp; Gve Dynamc Leadershp; nvolve the People; Advertse Well; and Cut Excess Meetngs. n regard to leadershp Powell states: Groups do not lead. ndvduals do. A dream an dea a vson begns wth one person and he then nspres motvates and leads the group to accomplsh t. f the church s to hum today t must have dynamc leadershp. We must lead follow or get out of the way. Perhaps many Seventh Day Bap-' tsts could proft from the chapter Cut Excess Meetngs. Powell gves useful advce on how to accomplsh more wth fewer commttee meetngs etc. He s radcal enough to suggest there s no value n contnuaton of a meetng or actvty smply because you have always done t. Tradton s no justfcaton for contnuaton he concludes. The SDB Mssonary Socety has sent copes of ths book to all pastors as well as members of the General Councl. However ths book can proftably be read by all laty who share the concern for seeng the church move forward. D Allegany's Uncommon Folk. Helene C. Phelan. Alfred N.Y $5.75 postpad.. Whether or not your roots are n the hlls of Allegany County New York as'-a Seventh Day Baptst you wll.fnd ths recently publshed book by Helene C. Phelan of great nterest as dd. The book s a hstory of the early settlement of the area wth emphass on many of the notable uncommon folk over the years. We found the chapter on Hram P. Burdck especally nterestng ndeed worth the prce of the book alone. Dr. Burdck a leadng Seventh Day Baptst of hs day was a unque man who s descrbed as a physcan dentst preacher evangelst temperance leader scholar and nventor. Perhaps our Alfred readers already know how the bell was placed n the church steeple-f you don't you smply must read Phelan's account... The Burdck famly had defnte deas about health and were lvng 100 years ahead of ther tme. The doctor establshed the Alfred Hghland Water Cure santarum whch flourshed for some years. n an advertsement whch appeared n the June edton of the Sabbath Recorder Burdkk stated that the facltes for successful treatment of varous (stated) dseases are not excelled n any establshment. Well f t appeared n the Recorder t must have been so!. Hram P. Burdck would no doubt be happy wth the current SDB commtment to evangelsm and church growth; no doubt f he were lvng he would be a leader n the cause. n the 1850's the author ponts out that the term born agan was a term heard often and wth partcular prde. Burdck was a mssonary for some tme laborng n New York Pennsylvana West Vrgna Wsconsn and llnos. n fact he organzed the Hartsvlle N. Y. SD B Church n 1847 from a group that he had been studyng snce boyhood. The book also contans many anecdotes of the local characters common to every small town and rural communty. Ths area of New York State saw the brth and development of many relgous movements: Mormonsm Sprtualsm Shakers Mllertes Campbelltes and Phelan provdes nterestn8 nsghts nto the lves of many ndvduals promnent n these movements. The book s $5.75 postpad (New York resdents please add sales tax) and may be ordered from the author Mrs. Helepe C. Phelan 114 S. Man Street Almond NY or at the Alfred College Bookstore. you wll enjoy t. 0 The Holy Sprt. Blly Graham. Waco Texas: Word Books 1978 $7.95 cloth.. n recent years new attenton has been focused upon the study of the Holy Sprt by the Chrstan Church. Blly Graham noted evangelst has recently publshed hs study on ths often-controversal subject. He says n the preface that ths book began as a part of my sprtual plgrmage. He undertook a systematc study of ths subject not wth the purpose of wrtng a book n mnd rather to learn more for hmself what the Bble teaches regardng the person and work of the Holy Sprt. n the book Dr. Graham seeks to answer such questons as: Who s the Holy Sprt? What does He do? Where does He come from? What s He dong n the world today? What s blasphemy aganst the Holy Sprt? How does He communcate wth Hs creatons? Why dd he enter the world? and What s the Baptsm of the Holy Sprt?. No doubt one of the most wdely msnterpreted teachngs of the Bble s that of the dfferng vews of Chrstans regardng the baptsm of the Holy Sprt. n recert years practcally every denomnaton has experenced dvsons over the study of ths queston. Some of these dvsons have occurred n a sprt that was not of God. Graham states that he receved the baptsm of the Holy Sprt the moment receved Jesus Chrst as my Savor. From hs extensve study he concludes there s only one baptsm wth the Holy Sprt n the lfe of every belever and states further nor do see that speakng n tongues s a necessary accompanment of beng flled wth the Sprt. To those who teach one must agonze labor struggle and pray to get the Sprt Graham says... no Chrstan need strve wat or pray through to. get the Sprt. He has receved t already... as an unmerted and unearned gft of grace. To ths we agree.. Ths book wll help those who are confused about the Bblcal teachng of the work of the Holy Sprt. More mportantly we beleve t wll help. lead the readers to a drect confrontaton wth the One who can ndwell and empower them
