Lhue TeamWns Champonshp Wth a record of only one ganle lost durng the season, Lhue cnched the cup by beatng the Makees n a runaway game at Wupoul last Sunday. The game was a play-o- l to decde the champonshp of the sec ond seres both teams beng ted for frst place wth one game lost for each team. t could hardly be called a game t was a slaughter, ll whch the daughty old warror, Doc Wood, met hs Waterloo and Ncorc 23 o 3 Wth the excepton of the thrd nnng, n whch they scored three runs, the Makees got goose eggs, and at the end of the long, drawn out game t was found that Lhue had amassed twenty-thre- e runs. t was not expected, however, even by the Makees themselves, that they would wn, as they dd not have the cracker-jac- lne-u- k p Returnng to School The young people returnng to school swelled the Knau passenger lst to the utmost capacty of the accommodaton on Saturday, and there were anxous fears that she mght not be able to take them all. LYDGATK. Mrs. Lucy Wrght of Wamea returned from town ths mornng. All Pan The baseball season s pan and has been an unqualfed success. The class of ball played throughout was far ahead of any other seson we have had, and the attendance at the games goes to show that practcally the whole populaton of our sland are rabd fans. Ths speaks well for the future of the game on Kaua. The season just ended was started two weeks too late, as the school boys had to return to Honolulu before the season was over, thereby serously crpplng some of the teams. The next season was hammered out of the box. Lhue scored n every frame wth the excepton of the seventh should start about and seemed to be able to place ther hts just where they would do the most good. the mddle of June. The Vhumpons t must be acknowledged by everyone that Lhue has developed a mghty good ball (cam. A great many of ther games were won n the last nnngs, by a sngle run or so, and seemed to be just luck. But to the close and unbased observer, t s somethng else besde luck. t was teamwork and the thng they call nsde baseball. Copt. John Fermndvz Capt. John Fernandez s responsble for the Lhue team. He knows baseball nsde and out, and ths knowledge he has used to develop a team that would wn games up n ths communty and handed smlar sentences t would have a wholesome effect. The World Prce of Sugar From Facts About Sugar) Under exstng condtons the queston of what s the actual world prce of sugar s an nterestng one. t s a queston more d.flcult to answer than one unacquanted wth the stuaton mght assume. Before the war there was no dffculty n determnng the world market prce because of the quotaton f. o. b. Hamburg was unversally recognzed as the world bass, even though t became at tmes a purely theoretcal fgure so far as concerned ts relaton to sales values n any partcular market. Wth the outbreak of the war Hamburg puotatons ceased and "Hamburg party" has now become an obsolete term n.ugar reports. Wth avalable supples tar below normal consumpton the governments of the varous bellgerent natons found t necessary to establsh control both of prces and dstrbuton and the prces thus fxed m.m, nun oenn..borr no drect relaton to the rates that would have prevaled under the unrestraned operaton of demand and supply. As the prncpal consumng and producng natons were drectly.nvolved n the w?r the prces estab lshed by authorty of ther govern ments became the bass for such sales to neutral countres as were permtted. Regulatons and agreements governng prces and dstrbuton are stll n effect n most of the bellgerent and n many of the neutral states. The prncpal European natons, under the necessty of collectng vastly greater revenues than formerly, have mposed cry heavy tu.ts on suga so that wthn Mn? borders, even though they were not artfcally regulated, would not represent the equvalent of a world valuaton. The nearest we can come to an accurate estmate of the fgure that wll represent the. present world prce s by consderng quotatons for shpments f, o. b. n those prmary markets n whch prces are not controlled, or c.. f. at ports of prncpal consumng countres. Another dffculty s met n the fact that there are almost no sugars avalable for prompt shpment n any market. Such sales as are beng made are manly lor future delvery. Wth the greater part of exstng stocks under control, both as to prce and dstrbuton, the offers made by purchasers who have partcularly urgent requrements to meet do not represent the true rato of supply and demand under condtons that would exst were a free movement permtted. Of the prmary markets not under restrcton as to prces the most mportant are those ot the Far East. n Java recent f. o. b. quotatons for late delvery from the crop now n the makng are gven as approxmately 0.5 cents a pound for whtes whle reported sales of Phlppne centrfugals at between eght and 8.5 cents f. o, b. Manla for delvery after January frst are not far below party wth ths quotaton. Reports are current that small transactons n refned held n second hands have taken place n the New York market at 2 cents. These represent speculatve transactons or sales to necesstous purchasers and are too small n volume to establsh a bass that mght be accepted as normal n the absence of restrctons upon general wholesale prces. Statements of recent sales c.. f. European ports ndcate that the reported Java fgure perhaps comes nearest to a reasonably accurate ndcaton of the world prce under exstng condtons. Would these quotatons hold good THE GARDEN SLAND. TUESDAY, SEPT. 6, 99 A f all restrctons upon prces and dstrbuton were removed? t appears probable that a steadly ascendng prce scale would rule for the remander of the year n vew of lack of avalable stocks to meet world demands, and that wholeale prces for refned rangng as hgh as 5 cents mght become a realty before the turn of the year made avalable fresh stocks n large volume. Such a wholesale prce as ths, however, wth the addton of the heavy taxes that must be pad by European consumers, would result n a sharp scalng down of European consumpton and t seems reasonable to antcpate that a movement toward a more normal prce level would set n as soon as new crop supples became avalable n consderable quanttes. The leadng European governments already are takng steps t- supervse purchases, regulate dstrbuton and lmt consumpton durng the comng year. Apparently, therefore, the consumng Sound fve years and the expanson of the automoble busness and the assured contnuance of ther growth, you wll readly see why an ncrease n our captal s necessary n order to handle the ever ncreasng volume of busness. -- Date The last sx months has seen such a great expanson n our busness that we found t necessary to ncrease our captal stock from $75,000 to $200,000, and snce placng ths stock on the market rhe response has been so enthusastc that wthout any great effort on our part we Subscrptons accepted upon and 0 per markets that wll be n a poston to offer whatever prces may bo necessary to attract supples wll be very lmted n the extent ot ther requrements. t s reported that unoffcal representatons already have been made to the government of the Unted States and Cuba suggestng concerted acton for the stablzaton of prceb and for the adopton of measures to assure an equtable dstrbuton of avalable supples. Wth the fnal removal of control, whether at the end of ths year or next, where wll the world prce be de termncd? From present ndcatons the New York quotaton on export refned and the quotaton for Cuban raws c.. f. New York wll provde the most relable bass for determn ng world values. New York s the naral clearng house for the sugar ot the Western Hemsphere and the probable contnuaton of an extensve export busness n refned, n vew of the fact that no other country has any consderable surplus refnng capacty, wll tend to make ths port, for some tme to come at least, the prncpal sugar mart of the world. When a rapdly growng corporaton n a cty wth such a brllant future as that of Honolulu offers you shares of stock at par, you have a proposton well worth consderng. When you realze the rapd growth of Honolulu n the past When you are nformed that ths concern has grown from a small company of $3,000 to ts present sze, wth a captal of over $65,000, you wll admt that the Pond Company, Ltd., offers one of the most attractve and soundest nvestments n Honolulus future prosperty. 7 Mau and Kaua on the Polo Feld (From ttr lulmn) Superor team work and better horses gave to Maul the polo champonshp of the Hawaan slands yesterday afternoon at Kaplolanl park after a hard battle n whch Kaua went down to defeat by a score of fo 6 ponts. t was the best ganfe of.the season flled wth sensatonal playng, clever passng, good horsemanshp and brllant head work both on the part of the men and pones. Bg Crowd The bggest crowd for a polo game ths year was on hand to wtness the match and exctement ran hgh. The fatb were well dvded although Kaua, beng the team behnd throughout the game, apparently receved the greatest backng on the prncple that the Mau team beng the stronger dd not need verbal support. The Garden sland quartet dd not go down easly. The men from the slopes of the greatest extnct volcano crater n the world had to work hard to wn. There were no dle moments when horses could be rested. t was np and tuck and away throughout the entre afternoon. Start Pat Collns and Edward Bak.lwn were the bg stars for Maul whle Ummy Spaldng and Johnny Marna earned the glory for Kaua. Colns was n wonderful form yesterday and lterally played a rovers game, appearng unexpectedly and gettng away wth a speed that was astoundng. Both he and Edward Baldwn scored four goals each. Sam Baldwn, Johnny Mallna and Jmmy Spaldng had three goals each and Frank Baldwn got one but for the wrong team. Edward Baldwn demonstrated hs debut as a star player. Sam Baldwn played hs usual- strong and clever - game and Frank Baldwn held up the defensve end n an excellent manner. Malna was the shnng star for Kaua. Jmmy Spaldng was also brght n the foreground and the Rce brothers proved that they are stll the relable players of old. Maul Starts After the prelmnary ramble back and forth n the openng chukker, Mau took the lead and drew frst blood when Pat Collns talled. He came rght back four mnutes later for the second. Hard luck kept Kaua from scorng; the ball httng the posts twce. Kaua got a goal n the Becond chukker, when at the start wth but three Mau men on the feld, the Garden slanders carred forward, and Malna scored. n the thrd chukker Edward Baldwn came to the front wth a tally. Maul opened the fourth chukker n a whrl wth Sam Baldwn gettng through n 40 seconds, and scorng agan two mnutes later. Kaua staged a rally n ths perod and after several hard luck attempts Jmmy Spaldng fnally scored, pckng the ball out of a scrmmage and tallyng wth a backhand stroke. Kaua came on agan and Malna scored a lttle later. Half Tme After the ntermsson, Maul took up the burden of the play, but Kaua ralled and the battle became a seesaw affar. Phlp Rce was forced nto a safety. Collns followed wth a tally from a dffcult angle after rdng off hs man n grand style. The sxth chukker saw the north ern men begn team work whch resulted n a score by Malna..Twce more, Kaua, threatened by Maul, ralled and Edward Baldwn made a goal before the sesson fnshed. The seventh chukker was a fast one wth both teams Antng t, hard. Spaldng scored n 2 seconds and Pat Collns came back fn a mnute and evened up that tally. Edward Baldwn followed wth a goal and then Kaua threatened. Frank Baldwn of Maul, attemptng to deflect the ball, scored a goal for Kaua. Edward Baldwn scored for Mau shortly after. The fnal chukker saw a goal each n the early part and hard work and no talles n the latter stages. THE TEAMS Maul. Frank Baldwn. 2. Edward Baldwn. 3. Arthur Collns. 4. Sam Baldwn., Kaua. THE GARDEN SLAND.TUESDAY. SEPT. 6, 99 The College of Hawa The College of Hawa yesterday, entered upon ts most successful year thus far. The enrollment already s larger than ever before and the type of young men and women comng well-benpromses much for the of the College. The freshman class wll number about ffty students and the sophomores wll be numerous enough to make lfe nterestng for the frst year men. The upperclass students wll be fewer n number but what they lack n quantty they wll make up n, qualty, some beng servce men. Consderable regret s felt that the legslature faled to approprate for a College dormtory, for t represents a vtal need n the growth of the College. Rooms are scare and expensve for students from the other slands and from the manland and a dormtory s much needed to offset ths dffculty. Then, too, college sprt s much enhanced by dormtory lfe, a real asset to any college, Consderable reparng and alterng has been done n the man buldng of the College ths summer. The lbrary has been enlarged to releve the pressure untl the new lbrary buldng s erected and general renovaton of walls and floors has been the order of the day. The new chemstry buldng s watng for the terrtoral bonds to be sold. n the meantme the congeston n the old buldng can be par tally releved only by workng the larger classes n several shfts. That makes much more work for the n structors but t cannot be avoded un tl the new buldng s put up Professor Herbert Bergman, the new Botany man at the College of Hawa, s havng hs share of trou bles gettng transportaton from San Francsco. Mr. Bergman has been n Washngton, D. Dean, Presdent of the College, was n San Francsco re cently he arranged for Mr. Bergman to come out on the Great Northern Transport. Unfortunately, ths wll brng about two weeks late, delayng the botancal work n the College. Professor Rock, the other College botanst, also wll be late returnng from the far east where he has been for several months on a specal ms son. Mexcan bandts held up am robbed Prof. rvng Ots Pecker, the new professor of Spansh and French n the College of Hawa. Mr. Pecker has been spendng the past year n Mexco n study and on hs way out recently was robbed of everythng he possessed except the clothes on hs hold-up- s back. Between bandt and scarcty of steamers Mr. Pecker s prevented from reachng Honolulu at the openng of College, but wll arrve one week late, comng on the Sonoma. f you have anythng to sell, or there s somethng you want, put a lttle notce n the Garden sland, and you wll get results. t does not cost much. These franchses are pretty explct, and carefully guarded. They must be made vald by executon wthn a reasonable tme and may be taken over by the Terrtory on the expraton of 20 years.
