MAU, Sept. 5. Durng Saturday afternoon, August 29th, Waluku streets n the vcnty of the hotel were crowded wth people. Some one sad that he never saw so many people together on Mau. They wated patently and they watched eagerly the nflaton of the balloon wth hot ar, generated by the burnng of sundry gallons of kerosene. t was rumored that $100 or $150 was rased by subscrpton before the ascenson. Somewhat after 5 p. m.. Prce, the aeronaut, entered the nettng of the parachute whch was attached to the lower ropes, and the ascent of the balloon began amd the cheerng of the multtude. Hardly had the nose ceased when an awful slence ensued the balloon had burst, and Prce was seen to unhook the parachute, turn a somersault and fall lke a stone a dstance of 50 to 75 feet nto a mango tree growng n the yard of W. T. Robnson. The tree saved the lfe of the balloonst, for wth the excepton of a severely scratched face he was unnured. The ascent and descent were accomplshed wthn fve mnutes. New York Tmes. Former Slave Market, Constantnople. On benches so placed as to command a good vew were the buyers, coarse lookng Turks, whose calm, searchng gaze seemed to take n every detal. The merchant conductng the sale stood before them, talkng and gestculatng wth great vehemence. He turned to one of the x w whch was flled wth young CrcasStn women, most of whom were very handsome. They were seated close together on the ground n an atttude of lstless despondency, ther whte garments flowng around them, and, as they gazed up at me wth ther sad, dark eyes, felt panfully how they must envy the free and happy stranger who came to look on them n ther nfamy and msery. The slave trader came forwrd, followed by a phlegmatc lookng Turk, and, sezng one of the women by the arm, forced her to stand up before ths man, who, t appeared, wshed to buy her. He proceeded to nspect her, very much n the same manner as he mght have examned a horse or a dog, and hs decson was unfavorable. He turned away wth a contemptuous movement of the head, and the slave merchant, n a rage, thrust back the unfortunate grl, who sank down tremblng among her companons n captvty. Ths scene was as much as we could stand, and we left the place hurredly at once. t s well ndeed that such sghts can be wtnessed no more, at least n Europe. Blackwood's Magazne, Blackburn and Blar. He had an exctng argument n a senatoral cloakroom at Washngton several years ago as to the relatve value of brandy and whsky as man's greatest boon. n the mdst of the argument the stocal prohbton Senator Blar of New Hampshre entered the room. Forgettng the well known total abstnence tendences of the New Englander, Senator Blackburn appealed to hm to settle the dspute. " do not know the dfference between whsky and brandy, " repled Senator Blar, wth a face as passve as a Japanese doll. After Blar had departed Blackburn's eyes actually mostened wth sympathy as he shook hs head eadly and sad : "Poor old man! Hs gtouach must be n awful shape." New York Trbune. Dncks and Drakes. Lord Russell's speech on arbtraton before the Saratoga conventon he spoke of the large sums of money nowben g expended to ncrease and mprove the armament of the natons of the word. There s ndeed a pecular rregularty n the common place asserton that the day wll soon arrve when arbtraton wll take the place of settlement by force of arms, when n the face of the theory practcal facts prove qute the contrary. Great Brtan s today as proud of her powerful navy as she ever was, and every Power on the globe s dong, ts best to keep up wth the strong adversary. European natons are spendng mllons to keep up the armed forces and the border lnes brstle wth death dealng weapons of the most destructve type. Certanly there s not much of the sprt of arbtraton n ths. nternatonal ealousy s as strong as t ever was. and the only hope held out s that the armament wll become so formdable that natons wll be more fearful of gong to wa. nternatonal fear may thus lead to nternatonal peace. AFTERMATH OF THE SENTENCE. JAMESON The manner n whch the Englsh press and people receved the sentence of Dr. Jameson and hs Transvaal raders gves a well founded mpresson that the ngo polcy has a strong followng among Brtsh subects. The leadng poltcal organs of the country naturally express gratfcaton that the law has taken ts course and that the raders have been gven ther ust dues. The sober thnkng people also follow n the same lne, but underneath t all there s an undercurrent of feelng that Dr. Jameson's great crme s represented n hs falure to succeed n hs undertakng. One paper says that nothng n legal penaltes can repar the dreadful mschef sprngng out of that mad and unscrupulous adventure; but t s safe to say that had Jameson been a lttle more careful n layng hs plans, the mad adventure would have been looked upon as more n accord wth the wonderful poem whch the new laureate composed n honor of the rad. The Saturday Revew represents one sde of publc opnon n the Brtsh sles when... t says: "t s hardly to be beleved. s our law so brutally vndctve? Do prevous character and past servces to the country go for nothng? s t the one fault that counts alone? A venerable lookng old gentleman, wth a wfe leanng on hs arm, trod the decks of the brg Gallee as she lay at anchor n Msson bay last evenng. He was the Rev. W. G. Buckner, who had ust returned from two years' mssonary servce n Ptcarn sland, says the San Francsco Chroncle of August 23d. Ptcarn sland s a small speck on the Pacfc ocean, about a mle and a half n dameter and contanng about 135 nhabtants, all told. Not a wde feld for mssonary effort: yet Mr. Buckner s well satsfed wth the result of hs efforts. Hs prncpal achevement was n furnshng the natves wth an abundance of clear, cold, healthful water. Prevous to hs vst the people of the sland were compelled to drnk warm and stagnant ran water, months old at some seasons of the year. The stuff had quenched ther thrst through so many generatons that they had become accustomed to regard t as refreshng. t was not untl Mr. Buckner arrved and. Moses lke, struck a rock from whch a flood gushed out, that they knew what good water really was. Mr. Buckner formerly conducted the SeventhDa v Adventst Church of Stockton, and was sent down to the sland by the Oakland Adventsts. On the outward trp two years ago he was very sck. Arrvng at Ptcarn. hs frst request was for a glass of fresh water. He had become so tred of the shp's stale drnk that he could hardly swallow t. and on the last few days of the voyage had been kept alve by the hope that on reachng land he would have a chance to get a cool, fresh drnk. What was hs horror when the natves hastened to hm wth a cup of the nastest stuff he had ever tasted. "Ran water s bad enough. ' sad Mr. Buckner. relatng hs experence, "but ths was old ranwater. Probably t was three months old. and orgnally t had been collected from a thahed roof. 1 would rather have drank far water wth a heavy charge of lobela n t than the stuff they poured nto me. mmedately grew stronger began to explore the lttle mountanous sland to try to dscover a sprng, but my search was unavalng. The natves explaned to me that there was a wet.sprng up on the sde of the mountan, whch ran only n the rany season, but n the dry season they had only the water they stored n casks flled from ther roofs when t was ranng. Later, however. became somewhat acquanted wth the tradtons of the sland. "An old natve one day n conversaton told me that years and years ago the people of the sland were suppled wth the best of water by a stream that came out of the hllsde, but whch had beeen flled up by a landslde. got hm to tell me all he knew about the locaton of the stream, thnkng f t ran there once t must be stll runnng. One day wth a party of natves began tunnelng nto the sde of the mountan at a pont ndcated by the old sage, and after gong only about twenty feet, to my profound surprse and gratfcaton a great volume of the clearest, coldest water you ever drank shot forth wth great force. The stream has every evdence of beng perpetual. The land slde had so packed the earth n about ts old mouth that t had been compelled to change ts. course. " sent to Oakland here for more ppes, and re confned the water and led t down nto the lttle town. Now the people are healther and happer than they have been for years and years." The people of Ptcarn sland. Mr. Buckner asserts, are the best he ever met. They are sprtually mnded, and the students n the Adventst boardng school recently bult to accommodate forty are makng excellent progress. The Gallee was forty days comng up from the cty o Papeete. Taht. The length of the trp was prncpally cue to calms and lght wnds. The brg experenced no rough weather. Captan Dnamore sghted the Hawaan Commercal Company's brg Lurlne on August 3d n lattude 26 deg. 20 mn. north. longtude 154 deg 50 mn. west. She reported lght wnds. MARKETNG HUMAN FLESH. The plan of Ubang, now the bone of contenton between France and the Kongo State, s the home of confrmed cannbals, who eat no meat exceptng that of man. They wll not eat beef or veal, but human flesh, seasoned wth salt and pepper, s ther greatest delcacy, and as often as they can afford t they purchase slaves of almost any age and sex. Accordng to recent nformaton, the French mssonary, Allare, succeeded not long ago n rescung 74 young slaves from these cannbals, anl escaped wth them aboard the steamer Lon to the orphanage of the msson house. Allare found these slaves exhbted n one of the markets lke cattle. He stated that these human beng were not only sold as a whole, but even n parts. f anybody had not money enough to buy an entre slave he would choose a porton, say an arm or leg, the seller markng the pece sold off wth whte chalk. The next comer would buy another part of the same unfortunate slave, and so on untl the entre body was sold. When the head was cut off the purchasers receved the porton marked down for them upon the spot. The custom s popular through the entre dstrct, and Allare estmates that annually at least 25,000 human bengs are dsposed of n ths way. Ex. Specal Englsh Trats. The ntellectual specalty of the Englsh, as we should contend, s ther mpatence of abstract deas, ther nablty to beleve that because an dea s sound they are. therefore, bound, even when t s nconvenent, to push t to ts logcal result. They nsst on self government, but are qute content to tolerate monarchy and arstocracy. They hold to relgous lberty as a dogma, but tax all landlords ndfferently to Bnpport an establshed church. They beleve n the equalty of ctzens and tolerate the most astoundng dfferences n the amount of votng power whch s assgned to each, so that a Londoner has scarcely a thrd of the power to nfluence laws possessed by an Arcadan or man of Klkenny. They swear by the franchse as the sheet anchor of lberty, but do not fret, f they get lberty, because the franchse s a restrcted one.
