DESGNER OF TEACHERS METHOD lls System Compare Wth Onrs Today Honors Tendered tho Great Moravan School Reformer 2fo Teacher Should Fall to ad ll. tlfo followng nterestng paper on. lfe Comenlus, great Moravan teacher, was read by nspector-gener- al Townsend at openng ot Summer School n Honolulu, Aug. 5th. John Amos Comenlus was born n Morava n year 592, one hundred years after dscovery Amerca by Columbus. Hs parents belonged to relgous sect known as Moravan Brethren. Ths sect was made up followers John Huss, Boheman reformer, who was burned at stake rar than recant hs doctrnes wthout pro r falsty, n 45, one hundred years before begnnng Reformaton under Lur. At frst y were naturally known as Boheman Brethren, but mssonary zeal combned wth persecutons at home, soon transferred center ths relgous body across mountans nto Morava; thus t came about that y are known n hstory as Moravan Brethren. Famlar wth persecuton, y learned to value r relgous fath more hghly than r lves. t was from such stock that Comenlus sprang; t was n ths relgous atmosphere that he was brought up. Of hs early lfe educaton we know lttle. has told us that ns parents ded n hs chldhood, that hs educaton was neglected tll he was sxteen years age; that he reupon set about makng up lost tme n good earnest, that he became dssatsfed wth educaton hs tme began to consder ways means for ts mprovement Let us turn asde from our story for a moment that we may get a vew ths educaton whch young Comenlus wshed to mprove. prevalng educaton seventeenth century was a w ell defned type. That type was determned by sprt Renascence personaltes two great men, John Sturm gnatus Loyola. Sturm was a man great force ot character. Flled wth sprt Renascence, he worked wth great zeal after a very defnte plan to developnot beauty thought, not thought at all, not practcal or oretcal wsdom, but beauty expresson. was a Protestant for forty years rector gymnasum at Strassburg re chldren began study words phrases, n Latn language at that, frst year r school lfe; for fourteen years, accordng to StraBsburg scheme, Latn words phrases were staple nstructon. No mamatcs, no natural scence, no modern languages, no hstory, no tranng n mor tongue even was consdered necessary to a lberal educaton, accordng to Sturms deal. Loyola, mpelled by dfferent motves, establshed a smlar course study for schools Jesuts; thus Latn words phrases, Latn language, but not Latn lterature, became matter chef concern n schools, Protestant Catholc alke. To speak Latn as Ccero spoke t, Greek as Demosnes; to wrte poems lke Pndar or Horace ths was goal toward whch all pupls were encouraged to run. Now Comenlus, whle yet a sohool-bo- y, saw what t seems strange hs elders had not seen before hm. vz., that ths course was narrow, that languages ought to be learned n less tme. Whle he was a student n Germany he happened to see a report prepared for Unversty Jena, on Ratlch3 method. Ths seems to have confrmed hm n opnon that great mprovements n popular system educaton were not only desrable but attanable. Accordngly, at age twenty-fou-r, we fnd hm publshng a short Latn grammar. same year he became a teacher, n aboned hs school for mnstry. Two years later relgous troubles began across mountans n Bohema, farl Brethren, se precptated bloody devastatng Thrty Years War. n 62 town n whch Comenlus had hs charge was J taken plundered by Spanards. j Comenlus lost nearly all that he had. Three years later a decree wa3 ssued banshng all Protestant clergymen. But Comenlus would not entrely abon hs people. took refuge n mountans,, strange to say, became a teacher. n 627 a new decree banshed all Protestants. persecutons now became so hard that 30,000 famles aboned r homes sought refuge n or parts Europe. How strange all ths must have sounded n seventeenth century! And agan n same stran he says, "Not only are chldren rch noble to be drawn to school, but all alke, gentle smple, rch poor, boys grls, n.great towns small, down to country vllages. And for ths reason. Everyone who s born a human beng s born wth ths ntent that he should be a human beng, that s, a reasonable creature, rulng over or creatures, bearng lkeness hs Maker." Ths beleve to be earlest appearance a dem educa ton for every human beng smply be cause ue or she was a human beng Whle ths was a tardy statement what seems to us an nevtable consequence acceptance Chrstanty, t has taken world two hundred ffty yean, to reach stpont Comenus. For longng after good, however t sprng up n heart, s always a rll flowng from fountan all good from God." was ndeed a man aspratons fath hope, as well as charty. Hs undertakngs were all on a large scale. When he set about work reformng educaton hs tmes, t was no ordnary task whch he undertook. And even desolatng Thtry Years War could not dscourage hm. And he was a man heroc ndustry energy. work whch he undertook accomplshed, n a few years would have occuped anor for a lfetme. Moreover when he dd a thng he dd t thoroughly. When he undertook to pround a scheme for reformaton schools world, no detal seems to have escaped hs notce. Thus t wll be seen that work whch he dd, mpled, n addton to ndustry energy, large mental powers. A man strong convctons, ot deep pety, endurng fath, hope whch knew no dsappontment, almost superhuman energy, ndustry mental power, such was Comenus. n tryng to dscern chef educatonal reforms whch Comenus advocated one s struck at once wth classes nto whch he proposed that schools should be dvded; st, School nfancy; 2d, )he Mor Tongue School,; 3rd, Latn School; 4th, Unversty. se suggest Kndergarten, Elementary School, Hgh School College, Unversty.
