Only the most meagre nformaton could be obtaned last nght, as the offcals or guards at the al declned to gve any nformaton, preferrng rather to go on a stll hunt for the escape than to gve the matter publcty. Rumor has t that Cullen, who was a trusty at the prson engaged outsde the walls, faled to answer to hs name when called at 5 o'clock. How long he had been away when the dscovery was made s not known, but t s supposed he had been absent about an hour. Search began at once wthn a half hour the prsoner's strped sut was found, showng that he had assstance n hs escape. The clerk at the staton was qute as retcent as the guards at the al. He would say only that a prsoner had escaped. nformaton was communcated to the arshal about 7 o'clock that Cullen was seen talkng to a well known young man on Sunday for about three hours, yesterday at 3 p. m. he was agan n conversaton wth hm outsde the walls. To the surprse of everybody on the water front, the steamer onowa got n from Sydney va Auckl, Apa Honolulu yesterday. The good shp has made twentyfou r trps to ths port, only on eght occasons has she fulflled the dems of her contract by arrvng, on schedule tme. On ths occason she has done remarkably well by arrvng four a half hours ahead of tme. "We had a very heavy northnorthea st yale aganst us for the last fortyeg ht hours," sad Captan Carey yesterday, "but nevertheless we made excellent tme. They have some new applances n the machnery, consequently we have averaged half a knot an hour better tme all the way across. "Whle we were n San Francsco the onowa was ftted wth new flters," sad Chef Engneer ccag. "These were to catch all the ol that floated on the water all the fne drt that would get nto the bolers. They were a great success. "When the shp got to Sydney they ftted her out wth 'retarders.' These are onesxteenscrews th about of an nch thck, whch are ftted nto each boler tube. They 'retard' the flame as t rushes through the boler tubes, consequently the extra heat the savng of fuel was consderable. Durng the entre run the steam n the gauge never vared a pound, the savng of coal was 2"J) pounds an hour. Why, my fremen nsst that they are n a new shp, say that for twentyfv e days they never had to prck a fre. Only vessels wth an extra good natural draught those that have a forced draught can use the retards; but, thank goodness, the onowa has a splendd natural draught, you see the result of our gettng here ahead of tme. Wth our new flters new retarders combned we are able to hold our own wth any steamer that comes to San Francsco." San Francsco Call, October 23. Swft Trp From Yokohama. The Brtsh shp Andelana arrved from Yokohama on October 24, only 26 days out. Ths s the best trp a salng vessel has made from Yokohama n many months. The Andelana s noted for her speed. n S9 she made the quckest salng voyage from Hong Kong to San Francsco ever recorded, dong the dstance n thrtyon e days. San Francsco Chroncle. Bg Brtsh Cruser Launched. GLASGOW, Oct. 2. The new Brtsh cruser Dadem was successfully launched here today. She s a shp of,0"0 tons, 405 feet long, the contracts for her constructon requre her to show a rate of speed equal to twenty onequart er knots an hour. The armament of the Dadem wll enable her to fre,000 pounds of shot per mnute. The Archer fnshed dschargng yesterday. She wll haul alongsde the W. G. Hall today to take on sugar. The Brtsh steamer Egremont Castle, Valentne master, departed for San Francsco at 6:30 p. m. yesterday. The U. S. S. Adams was decorated wth flags yesterday n honor of the brthday of the Emperor of Japan. The kahala was a lttle late n gettng away yesterday afternoon on account of the large amount of freght she had to take. The W. G. Hall brought down over bags of sugar from Pahala plantaton, Kau. The locomotve at that place has at last been fxed now the steamers may go that way reocng. The steamer W. G. Hall dd not arrve n port untl ust as t was turnng dark last nght, every one along the water front was begnnng to thnk somethng terrble had happened. However, t was only because the steamer had bad weather along the Kau Kona coast, added to the fact that she s slghtly n need of cleanng. ARRED. WANSEYHOOK E At Dungog, N. S.
