Wlder.) London, Oct,. A St. Petersburg spec dspatch to Tmes says: The Czar has lost n weght enormously durng last few weeks. He suffers great pan, and looks very ll. A dspatch cabled from St. Petersburg Saturday stated that "The Czar, actng upon advce of Professors Zacharn and Leyden, hs attendng physcans, wll make a temporary stay n Lvana shortly. The Czar has a pace n a town named Lvana, THE CZAR on sourn coast of Crmea. There s so a town named Lvana n Greece, not far from Ans. The sendng of yachts to Pneus seems to mean Czar s gong from Spa to Greece, nstead of to Crmea, as heretofore reported." The Standard correspondent n Berln s authorty for statement that Trofessor Leyden has dagnosed Czars ment as Brghts dsease n an advanced stage. On or hand, Venna Tageblatt mantans that Czar s sufferng from neurasna, coupled wth anaema, n addton to kdney dsease. The Czars condton, t s sad, was made worse by a cold whch he caught two urhts before leavng St. Petersburg. He went to one of telegraph offces n Wnter Pace at oclock n mornng and dctated a message to Abbas Tuman, n Caucasus, concernng heth of hs favorte.son George, and wated an hour and a hf n bare offce for a reply from doctor. He was not satsfed wth reply, and returnng to hs bedroom threw hmself nto an armchar and wept. He cred : 44 Oh God, what have done to be so severely puushed? " The Czar could not sleep through thnkng of h son George. Durng frst nght of hs stay n Georges resdence n Spa Czar arose from hs t ed, went to hs sons room and watched hs sleepng son for a long tme. n returnur to h3 room he passed through a com passage and was attacked wth rheumatsm, whch made h l condton worse. t s sad that, he gtvatly prefers Grand Puke George to Czarewtch. t s far to say that l who have come nto contact wth tn Czarewtch hold a hgh nptm of hs ntellgence. He was to have artved at Darmstadt Frday preparatory to takng hs fancee, Prnces Alce, to Wesbaden next week, re to be receved nto Orthodox church. These arrangements have l been up et o ng to llness of te Czar, hut fact that y were m;e and publcly announced sets at st persstent rumors as repugnance of The young Prncess to renounce fath n whch she was born and bred. She s an average prncess, after l, wth no partcular reluctance to become an Km press. Humors affectng Czarewtch exstence of opera dancer. Ors admt possblty, even probablty, that story s true, because Czarevtch, though amable and geuerous, s not by any means of resolute character, and, moreover, he s pecularly susceptable to pretty faces and wnnng ways. These blemshes of character may be merely ndcatons of mmaturty, but y are causng anxety ust now n vew of possblty of ths young mans early cl to throne. HER TO THE THRONE. Peculartes of tho Man Who f Wll Succeed ths Czar. ) Ncholas Alexandrovtch, Czarevtch, her to throne, s by no means a robust young man; (He s short and rar delcate lookng, wth anythng but mper bearng whch has come to be assocated wth Romanoff famly. The present Czar s a vertable Aax, of enormous sze and strength. Hs heart would probably have gone out n sympathy to an her who nherted bodly qutes of hs race, or would have forgven hs weakness of frame, had OF RUSSA. t contaued an mperous mnd; but Czarevth had ner, and t s sad to be only through nfluence of Czarna that eldest son hab not been set asde from successon n favor of hs younger bror, Mchael. However much Czar may love hs eldest son, he has no great respect and admraton for hm as a RusHan Emperor, says a wrter n Munseys Magazne. He s a student, and Alexander thnks that students are of sml account n world as compared to men who can bend ron pokers n r lngers., Ncholas Alexandrovtch has studed l hs lfe, because studyng was; hs only pleasure. Fear of Nhlsts kept hm for years most a prsoner n mper pace and country places, where he grew up an nnocentface d boy, wth no knowledge of lfe except what he ganed through books and papers that had been carefully nspected before he saw m. The darker sde of Russan hstory was to hm a seed volume. Some fve years ago young prnce started out upon hs travels. He went to Denmark, to England and to Germany, and amount of modern nformaton that he managed to mbbe and carry back to Russa set teeth of czar on edge. The young man had brought back wth hm well defned am radc opnons and ores upon questons and lterature of day. He had decded that Jews were human bengs, and that t was nhuman and rdculous to persecute m. Worst of l, n bs fars eyes, he had become devoted frend and admrer of German emperor. Look upon Russa as she s today, and magne a mld, very ntellgent, modern young man comng n to take rens of an most absolute monarchy ; a young man who has chosen as hs wfe a vvacous German grl, wth a keen sense of humor and daughter of an Englsh mor. When present ruler des re s lkely to be a housecleanngn Whte Czars country. The czarevtch s twentys years x old. Ever snce hs boyhood Europe has been busy selectng a wfe for hm. He s so Englsh n hs tastes, so fond of hs cousns, chldren of Prnce of Wes, that t was supposed he would select one of daughters of that house, but even had nclnaton ponted that way Greek church absolutely forbds marrage of frst cousns. nterestng Remnscences of Vsts to Theosophst. STRANGE REVELATONS BY HER. Stores Told of ast of Wrter That Were Startlng ndeed, But Prognostcatons as to Future Not Correct Pecular Kevolver ncdent. As subect of osophy s exctng consderable nterest n Honolulu at present tme, and ndeed has been occason of much dscusson and comment throughout Unted States for sever years past, anythng wth reference to famous author of system s lkely to be nterestng. n summer of S75, whle n a law offce n New York wth Wllam Q. Judge, present head of order n.unted States, Madame Blavatsky came nto cty from Europe. Her advent and doctrne aroused some newspaper comment. Mr. Judge, beleve, was personly acquanted wth Colonel Olcott and, through hm, procured un ntroducton to Madame. One afternoon he asked f would lke to meet her wth some or people holdng varous pecular vews. Of course, wa only too glad to have opportunty. n a few days an appontment was made, and wth Mr. Judge went one evenng to where Madame Blavatsky was resdng on rvng Place. We found a dmlylghte room, wtl a d few, rar nterestng and curous people ready assembled. Sttng round a large table, Madame and some of more promnent thnkers, lke Colonel Olcott, began dscussng some of propostons of sprtusm whch were n exctng attenton. They had much to say of recent dscoveres n Egypt and Orent. They dscussed meanng of heroglyphcs. t was stated that key had been found whch opened way for those who became suffcently possessed of osophc dea to perform many wonderful thngs, and to exercse mmense sprtu power. t was sad that one, thoroughly acquanted wth sgns and symbols used by magcans of Egypt, could agan accomplsh mauy of strange and apparently mraculous acts performed by m. MADAME B LA VATS KY S APPEARANCE. The Madame herself was to me qute as nterestng as subect dscussed. She was very large, heavly bult, very fleshy, wth a neavy face, brght, sharp eyes, and marks of, ntellgence and power; but, to my thnkng, face so seemed a gross one. t so happened that sat at one end of table whle she was at or, aud every once n a whle she observed what was dong. A revolver lay before me and, weeng that t was not loaded, occasonly handled t, slowly cockng t, watchng revoluton of barrel, whle lstenng to dscusson. Now and n t caught hfcoc k, at though could not see why. Present Madame observed: " Be careful: you wll hurt yourself wth that pstol." 44 Why," sad, " what s matter wth t?" "Nothng," she "t s n perfect order, but sometmes John, n a sprt of mschef, mddles wth ts workng and t catches, and, f you are not careful, t may suddenly snap and hurt your Augers." Ths was nterestng, and looked at revolver agan very carefully wth renewed nterest, tryng to make up my mnd as to who "John" mght be, and wheren hs nterference conssted. Fnly er myself or Mr. Judge asked: " Who s John, and where s he?" "John," sad Madame, "s a knght, who lved durng tme of Queen Elzabeth, and he 3 often wth me. That s he," she sad, pontng to a sml pcture n an ov frame hangng on wl. glanced at t agan, for had looked at t sever tmes durng evenng wth some curosty, for t appeared as though a red ro e had been forced between glass and pcture. Both Mr. Judge and ruyself examned pcture aud observed that t appeared to be of u knght of about perod of Queen Elzabeth apparently from hs dress. To me he seemed to wear a pecular snster expresson. The eyes seemed to glsten (though ths may have been from my magnaton) aud, lookng closely, t appeared tome that a rose had been forced between glass and pcture mat. " Why s rose re?" asked of Madame. " t comes tself," she sad; " sometmes t s re and s agan suddenly removed." Ths agan found to bo extremely nterestng, and watched pcture furtvely durng remander of

The ors agreed, and t was so understood and agreed specfcly for that those who oned socety low fctudy of osophy shouldstep benothng else to nterfere or of pursut ths tween m and great subect. Whle was very desrous of knowng more upon ths topc, felt that had no rght to throw asde everythugelse, and refore could not on socety; so, when those gared around table, at Madames command, oned hands and arose to repeat promse, one to anor, and to form socety, whch was n done, wthdrew and kept my seat. Madame, at or end of room, leaned toward me, her eyes gvng out an angry lght, and motoned for me to stand up and on hands, but shook my head and must confess that was rar embarrassed to appear to stand n way n any degree of obect n vew. As soon as se prelmnares were over and company began to dsperse and converse wth one anor, Madame came quckly to where was standng aud, an empressve, perhaps an angry voce, sad: "Perhaps, Mr. C, you do not thnk that fully understand and apprecate what t s that comes between your sprt and mne that prevents you yeldng to me, but do; re s anor person who stands between you and me, but wll gan that yet." The Star gves a poltc sgnfcance to some unfortunate and dsgraceful dongs n Hawaan hotel, because ts propretor s sad to be a royst. Ths s constructon to be put on ts stern resolve, n ludng to se dongs, that " any attempt at a revv of monarchc bad habts, er n publc or n prvate, wll be met wth open rebuke " by Star. t would be more n accordance wth facts to warn any Amercan vstors here, or who may come here (for l partes nvolved are Amercans), that any attempts on r part to mtate " monarchc bad habts," would be everlastngly, and exclusvely, rebuked by Star. Because some Amercans went on a spree n hotel, and under supervson and toleraton of steward, who s a naturzed Amercan, t seems hardly far to charge Colonel Macfarlane wth attemptng to revve "monarchc bad habts." Shortly after three oclock yesterday mornng, Mss Lzze Cutter was awakened by feelng somethng around her neck. At frst, beng only hf awake, she dd not thnk much of matter. n a few mnutes, however, she was fully awakened by feelng a rope slowly tghtenng around her neck. Lookng up, she saw a man kneelng on bed, wth a rope n hs hand, or end of whch was looped around her. She put her hand between her neck and rope and worked noose off. Then phe screamed, and man, whoever he was, escaped by a back door. Mss Cutter ran out on porch, where she met her sster, who had been awakened by cres. The case s a most mysterous one. The only explanaton that seems feasble s that vllan was about to attempt crmn assault when Mss Cutter awakened, and frghtened hm away by her screams. Ths seems to be only soluton of matter. t s hardly probable that man, f he was a burglar, would take trouble to choke hs vctm, when she was asleep and he could have robbed house wthout fear of nterrupton. The whole affar showed careful preparaton. The man had entered house by a wndow n rear, whch had been left open. He U ano aad to have Vod sever whte boys not to assocate wth atv of hfwhte th scholar, an natve blood was sure to show out some tme, and y were not tu for good boys to know All ths, wheu t became nosed arounj, rased a bc fuss. t was clamed that Professor losmer had dscrmnated greatly aganst royst scholars, and that whole atlar wasslmplv a poltc scheme to sdow those who" were n favor of restoraton that 4P. C. V were better than y were. Those parents? who were roysts became very ndguaut and, f report were true, tuey would have been perfectly rght. Before facts became known, four of scholars cuus to Preparatory School, whch s under same management as college, were wthdrawn, and one from college. The parents were most ndgnant that such statements should have been hfwhte s, made n regard to and were very severe on Professor losmer for hs leged trade agust m. But fact of matter s, that Mr. losmer never sad a word derogatory of never locked hfwhte s, two boys up n r rooms for a month, was never struck by a boy, never nssted on Mrs. Domn beng cled and, n fact, s not tyrant exquee and double dyed vllan whch be has been made out. Those Hom er who know Mr. could hardly beleve such a thng possble at any tme, and y wll be glad to know postvely that re s no truth n report. The true case s that recently an epdemc of swearng seems to have struck college. Sever of boys were heard usng language whch would not grace a rawngroom, and Mr. losmer cled sx of m to account for t. t o happened that three of culprts were roysts, and ors annexatonsts. He nformed m that y came to Punahou to learn somethng else besdes profnt y and, as that study was not ncluded n college currculum, t would be better for m to abandon t. Then he told boys that y would be requred to spend l r snare tme n r rooms for three days, as a punshment. Durng progress of Mr. losmer s lecture to young ollenders, he made remark whch was so twsted as to become reported trade hfwhte s. aganst Some of boys were hfwht es and, n part extenuaton of r usng bad language, Mr. losmer sad that Hawaan boys, when tkng natve, were prone to be freer n r speech than were whte boys. Ths was, accordng to boys own stores, sad n kndest way possble, hut n some way t leaked out and t?c.tme dstorted versou whch has caused l trouble. After reports had started, and had assumed shape whch y dd, two of boys hfwht e concerned made a volunteer statement n wrtng to Mr. losmer to effect that he had not, to r knowledge, ever abued.t he hfwhte s, had made no derogatory statements concernng m, and that poltcs cut no fgure whatever n college. 6 G THE PACFC COlMMERCXA ADVERTSER: LOXOaUAJ, OCTOBER 7, S94. POSTAGE STAMP FAD. T BEGAN AS A HARMLESS AMUSE MENT AND BECAME A MANA. Mllon f lhur Aff Locked l p n llt f rjrtlut Hate No r Vue of th Hare Spffmm For Whch abalo a Trers Are Akrl and Gven. The osta stamp mana s on.; of tho mast enroas of human fad, remarks a New York wrter. A collecton of cons s at most worth weght of met. Not so a collecton of etamps. The fashon may go out as t came n, and n stamps wll so much waste papr. The fad broke out n 80 n form of a few sporadc ra.sfs amon schoolboys and madf lades. t was not only a harmless fad, hut n case of t was even an educatve one. t proved easest, pleasantes t and most tflcacous way of drvng knowledge of geography nr. adolepcent mnd. But nrrw that se frst few sporadc attacks have developed nto somethng armngly lke an t ndemc oue brans to speculate wher craze of s not a dstnct bar to human progress, narauch as t consumes a large amount of bran force anl vta energy that mght better be turned nto or and more useful channels of actvty. n Unted States one re s an organzaton cled Amercan Phlatelc assocaton, whch numbers l,o)o member. But ths represents on a sml fracton of phlatelsts actuly n country. Tho greatest and most famous of lvng phlatelsts consdered merely from tho phlatelst pont of vew s L Phlppe do Ferrar, a dgnfed, courteous and whte hared old gentleman who lves n Pars. le s a son of tho late Duchess de Glera, who wa so a passonate lover of stamps. Hs collecton s vued at r00,000. o has been known to pay o00 for an bum whch contaned only a tngle stamp that ho coveted. Tor more vuable collectons ho has never lmted hs expend tnres. Next to Ferrar collecton comes that of Baron Arthur de Rothschld, whch s Kovuablo that ts owner, wth tho truo eousy of collector, reserves tho pages contanng hs rarest treasures for tho delectaton only of hmself and hs most ntmate frends. Now, what consttutes tho enormous vuo of so collectons? t s not number of specmens. There are more than 0,000 dfferent varetes of utampe now actuly n exstence. A certan number can bo obtaned at comparatvely lght expense. But rarer ones command largo prces. Never mnd wher tho rarty was created by ago or accdent.. Tho MacMahou stamp n France s blue rose, tho unattanable de of collector. "When marsh was presdent of France, hs wfe was anxous to sco hs mago set n stamps. Desgns were accordngly prepared, but post commssoner reetted m and adopted anor desgn. Neverless tlere s a legend that sunn.f se MacMaho stamps got nto crculaton. f a sngle specmen ever turns up, t wll l e r.rcclc:. Ahor lost plead s a postage stan n ssued by government of Brtsh Q uana n t has dsappeared from market, and specmens held n hands of prvate collectors are vuv. l at f2ox A set of four S30 stamps so ssued n Brtsh Guana brng anywhere fn $00 to $500, and a set of four ls.vj Hawaan stamps are vued at f l,50o. The 5 and 30 ceut reunon stamps brng fooo. The New Brunswck 3 cent stamp, wth head of O Councl, s rarely parted wth under $30. Rare s so black Canadan 2 penny stamp, vued at $23. But tho collector does not stop at legtmate ssues of stamps. He gves fancy prces for varetes of shades, for perforatons, errors am watermarks. At a recent stamp exhbton n Venna an enthusastc collector named Gwel b dsplayed wth prde "error" of France a stamp of 25 centmes prnted n blue nstead of black, error of Afghanstan and a stamp wth a mssng ornament n a corner. Dr. 3lmann of Venna had even more wondrous delghts to unfold, for he was tho proud possessor of two rare errors of Cape of Gvl Hope, stamps of penny and 4 penr respectvely, whch aro bluo nstead of reel and red nstead of blue. Such "errors" fetch a very hgh prce, kept down only by uneasness of creatng new "vues" by wantng msprntng. No artcle on phlately could be complete wthout some notce of.000,00 0 postage stamps myth. Ths stll survves n vague and uncertan forms n tho rur dstrcts, where t s beleved that some vast beneft, fnanc or or, wll accrue to any one who collects,000,000 stamps and forwards m to proper address. But th proper address s never known. nronemon. A clerc correspondent of one of tho church papers relates that a certan prelate had great dffculty n suppressng hs laughter at consecraton of a church or day owng to devlc o on one of school banners whh was carred n processon before th Fervce. Ths banner was adorned wth a very ferce lookng lon, wth Terrble claws and tevth, whle underneath hm was legend, "Suffer lttle chldren to come unto me." Loudon Truth. Yellow FfTfr. Thero s a marked pecularty about yellow fever whch dstngushes t from most epdemcs. t s essently a dsease of a hot clmate, and t takes a certan amount and duraton of heat to awaken t to lfe. t s sad that t can never prev where ndan corn wll not rpen. Eectrc elevators are multplyng. STUDYNG HUMAN NATURE. Lades Column. Nfl anl Vuable Scentfc Work w lets Carred on n Wellngton. A new lx ng knd of scentfc work s turrt d. on n Washngton, n whch testng of 23,XO school chldren mently, morly and physcly s th" prelmnary step. Dr. Arthur McDonaM s conductng work under au s pces of Unted States bureau of educaton, and tho results when arranged and tabulated are expected to throw vuable lght upon a number of woon d questons concernng race. For example, t s desn d to know wher boys of laborng class anl s brght than sous of well to do. Are y as well nourshed? n London not long ago nvestgaton proved that chldren of laborng people n that :n tropols weye better nourshed that s to say, weghed more at same age than those belongng to hgher soc strata, latter beng fed on too much candy and cake. The work here beng unfnshed, conclusons cannot be stated. To begn wth, heght and sttng heght of each chld were taken. Long boded race5, generly speakng, aro nferor. t s desred to know f long boded ndvdus are less cleverer less strong than ; short boded of same race. Aro long Wcd boys and grls apt to be stupd?
