Upon one occason a frend at the dyng mans bedsde referred to the success of "Trlby" as a book and play, whereupon Du Maurer repled: "Yes, t has been successful, but popularty has klled me at last." One of Du Maurers frends who was present at hs death sad: "He ded almost as tragcally as Svengal. At the zenth of Trlbys fame Svengal became the vctm of an affecton of the heart. Du Maurer has gone the same way. At the zenth of hs popularty the author has succumbed to the heart trouble from whch he has always suffered, hs sufferng beng accentuated by a constant successon of ectng ncdents n whch the closng few months of hs lfe were spent. Checks raned n upon hm as hs old heart trouble ncreased. The heart trouble, complcated by affecton of the lungs, took hm off." Funeral of Du Maurer. LONDON, Oct. 3. The Hampstead Church was crowded today wth the frends and relatves of the late George Du Maurer, the artst-auth- or who ded on Thursday last, and whose remans were cremated at Wokng on Saturday. Australans Enjoy the Sghts Ban- - quet Last Nght. Among the through passengers on the Marposa yesterday was the Australan Crcket Team, who are returnng home after a ten months trp around the world. Durng ther trp they lost but eght matches, s n England and two n the States. They were very much dsapponted that a game could not be arranged wth the Honolulu Crcket Club durng ther stay n port. They, however, put n a very pleasant day n the cty, gong out to Wakk n the afternoon and enjoyng a bath at Sans Souc. Swmmng and dvng matches were held between the dfferent members of the team, n whch H. Musgrove, the manager, proved hmself to be a stayer. The captan and the best all around player of the aggregaton s H. S. Mc-Kbb- n, Trott. One of the members, T. R. met a relaton of hs n the cty n the person of Dr. McKbbn, whom he had never met before. A. hall has not been flled wth so large a number of young men for a long tme as t was last nght, when the Assocaton gave a socal meetng to ts members. About two hundred and ffty young men were present to lsten to the entertanng program whch had been prepared for them. Nearly every number on the program was encored, and some of them receved double encores. The followng selectons were rendered: Muscal selecton, by the Nuuanu Quartette; song, "Solders Farewell," by Messrs. Macurda, Babbtt, Wood and Warrner; rsh jg, by Bobby Scharpe; voln duet, Love and Het-ma- n; rectaton, A. L. Morrs; song, Absence, Quartette; club swngng Davd Ko; banjo solo, A. S. Cunha. Every number on the program 3 worthy of menton, but especal menton should be made of the quartette, the rsh jg by Bobby Scharpe, and the club swngng by Davd Ko. After the lterary part of the program, ce cream, sherbet and cake was served and the boys had all they wanted. Secretary Bluome was very much pleased wth the number present, and stated that the Y. M. C. A. ntends to hold these evenngs durng the wnter months. Chef ustce udd was one of the most nterested of the audence, and he seemed to enjoy the entre program. t was the concensus of opnon that the entertanment was such that repettons of t. wotld be a great beneft to the Assocaton. To get 250 young men and old nto the hall s not a common occurrence, but the number wll no doubt be larger at the net socal. UNCLE SAM TURKEY FEARS. Forcble Talk About "Forcng" the Dardanelles. NOBODY HAS YET HE EN HURT. False Rumor About Venezuelan Affars Bs Fre n Guayaqul Roseterys ResgnatonRussas Czar Smooth Poltcan. Somethng of nterest to Sugar Producers. NEW YORK, Oct. 4. The Suns Washngton specal says: The publcaton n the Sun ths PRACTCE mornng of the determnaton of the Government that the practce shp Bancroft shall be anchored off Constantnople aroused new nterest n the Turksh queston. Attempts have been made to deny the accuracy of the dspatch, but wthout success. The Bancroft has been ordered to go to Constantnople, and as she cannot do ths wthout the assent of the Turksh authortes, she wll pass the Darden-elle- s wthout t. These are facts, and Whte House denals based on techncaltes do not alter them n the least. The Bancroft may be and probably wll be able to pass the Dardanelles wthout trouble, but ths can only be determned after the attempt s made. Dplomats and publc men n Washngton apprehend that no serous consequences would follow a bold stroke on the part of ths Government, and many of them assert that f the State Department gves a frm and decded notfcaton to the Porte that t proposes beng represented n Turksh waters by a guard shp, no defant objecton would be rased. They have cautously commended the course as outlned n the Sun ths mornng, and are confdent that f the admnstraton cast asde the precedent whch has gven slent recognton to the Portes contenton that we are not enttled to have a guard shp at Constantnople, and send the Bancroft through the Dardanelles, the way wll be open for the European powers to reach a satsfactory conclu son of the Eastern queston, whose gravty for some months has come very near upsettng the peace of Eu rope. Although the plans outlned by the admnstraton and determned upon lately may be modfed somewhat to meet emergences that may arse, t s now ts ntenton, as t has always been, to send the Bancroft to Constantnople, and she was selected from all the vessels of the North Atlantc staton smply because of her sze and lght battery, and other characterstcs whch make her conform more nearly to the type and class of shps mantaned at the Porte. Admnstraton offcals, who are anous to mantan the admnstratons polcy of secrecy, leave the mpresson that she was to act as a dspatch boat to Admral Self-rdge- s fleet and transport stores from Genoa to the shps of the fleet. To send a war vessel 5,000 mles, however, for the purpose of actng as a transport was a theory advanced that few credted, and at last ths evenng Prvate Secretary Thurber admtted that the admnstratons object n as- - sgung her to the Medterranean was for the purpose of havng her serve as a guard shp to Mnster Terrell. He dened, however, that the shp would force the Dardanelles, but thought necessary th frman would be secured to permt her free entry. Ths s the frst acknowledgment made yet by any one competent to speak wth authorty that the Bancrofts msson s n Turksh waters. Ths mornng the arrval of the Cncnnat at Smyrna was cabled by Admral Self rdge. Tomorrow the Bancroft s epected to put n an appearance, and then Mnster Terrell wll be nformed that she s at hs servce. Hs Reputaton as a Scene Panter. Wllam T. Porter, the veteran scenc artst n the Unted States, s probably better known around the theaters from Mane to Calforna than most men connected wth theatrcals. When the old Pkes Opera House n Cncnnat was bult years ago, Mr. Porter was engaged to pant the scenery. Not long after the theater burned and Mr. Porter went to Calforna, but the people n Cncnnat have not forgotten hm, as the followng, clpped from the Commercal Trbune of October 4, wll testfy: "Through the kndness of Mr. ames Landy, we are permtted to publsh n ths ssue of the Commercal Trbune an admrable lkeness of Wllam T. Porter, the veteran scenc artst, who years ago fgured conspcuously n our local theatrcal world. Mr. Porter was at one tme the artst n charge of the "pant frame" at the old Pkes Opera House, but drectly after the burnng of that theater made hs way to the Pacfc coast, where he has been for nearly a quarter of a century the leadng theatrcal panter, fndng employment n the very frst houses of the far West. He was recently called to Honolulu to ft up the Hawaan Opera House, erected upon the ste of the one destroyed durng the revoluton. The scenery for the frst theater n Hawa was from the brush of Mr. Porter, and t s no small complment to hs ablty that he should be called from San Francsco a second tme to pant the curtan and "stock stuff" for the leadng playhouse of that far away cty. n the days gone by no artst stood as hgh n the estmaton of Cncn-nata- ns as Mr. Porter, and chershng even at ths day the fondest remembrances of the people of our cty, he sends to Mr. Landy, one of hs most devoted frends, the Commercal Advertser of Hawa, contanng an ntervew n whch he relates many nter-estn- g thngs of the old Pke Opera House days. Atlas Reader, the stage carpenter of Pkes; DeWtt Waugh, the artst, and nearly all of the contemporares of Mr. Porter are now dead. E. T. Harvey, the dstngushed artst, who, f we mstake not, was a "pant boy" under Mr. Porter, s about the only one of the number stll actvely employed n stage work. The portrat upon ths page s taken from the Hawaan Commercal Advertser." ( The Cncnnat Commercal of the same date, n speakng of Mr. Porter, says: "An tem clpped from a San Francsco paper says: "Scenc Artst Wllam T. Porter s at work on the new Honolulu Theater, preparng for the openng by the Frawley company n November." Some thrty years ago "Bll" Porter, as he was called by hs famlars, was the scenc artst at the old Pkes Opera House n ths cty, and later of the Mozart Hall, now the Grand Opera House. He went from here drect to San Francsco, and has been constantly employed n that cty up to the present tme. Mr. Porter was and s an artst of great ablty, beng consdered n hs younger days one of the best scenc panters n Amerca. Many of the works from hs brush are stll among the stock scenes of the Grand Opera House, many of them havng been n constant use for the last quarter of a century." 3 R. SCHAEFER REPLES. Eplans Poston of the Trustees of Queens Hosptal. MR. EDTOR: The statement n your ssue of ths day, of the proceedngs of the meetng of the Board of Health, held last Wednesday,, as regards the acton of the trustees of the Queens Hosptal, s n so far msleadng as the recepton at the hosptal of Government patents free of charge has not been declned by the trustees, but they declned to recognze foregn women under the act to mtgate, as such Government patents. Ths acton s the more justfed as the Board of Trustees has not long ago made an agreement wth the Board of Health by whch patents under the act to mtgate are to be receved, treated and mantaned at the Queens Hosptal at the nomnal rate of ffty cents per day, Hawaans free of charge. The enclosure s a copy of the letter addressed to the Secretary of the Board of Health on the above subject whch more clearly defnes the acton taken by the trustees. may add here that the trustees are fully aware of the condtons placed upon the appropraton of publc funds n support of the Queens Hosptal by the last Legslature. As ths law went nto force on the SOth une, 896, hosptal blls aganst the Government pror to that date are epected to be pad, whle Government patents from and after that date are under the new law to be receved and treated at the Queens Hosptal free of charge, to whch objecton has been rased. am, dear sr, Yours respectfully, F. 4 4 PACFC COMMERCAL ADVERTSER: HONOLULU, OCTOBER 23, 896. ACFC WALLACE R. FARRNGTON. EDTOR. FRDAY, OCTOBER 23. SGNS ONT TO McK N LKV. All sgns pont to McKnley s the only concluson that can be drawn frnm the nolteal stuaton n ue States at the last reports. The elec- - tons n Florda and Georga nae e- - cted comparatvely lttle nterest as the two partes are too near the fnal struggle to pay much attenton to sde ssues whch about balance each other so far a3 the poltcal sgnfcance goes. n Georga good szed Democratc gans were the rule and Tom Watson certanly receved very lttle from h3 own State to rase hs hopes for possble electon on the natonal tcket. n Florda the Democratc losses were large enough to offset the gans of Georga. There were three tckets n the feld, two of whch were backed by Republcans and Populsts. Ths dvson of course precluded any possblty of carryng the electon, but there s no doubt that nroads were made on the rulng party. Elsewhere there has been lttle change. Every leader of every party s makng the most of every moment. Bryan was last heard from n the Dakotas and one of the most notable gatherngs at Canton has been a large vstng delegaton of Confederate veterans, who pledged ther votes to the sound money cand date. Palmer and Buckner have been travelng together, "dong" the country on somewhat the same style as Bryan, ecept that they are confnng ther efforts to doubtful terrtory. They have been well receved as every Pres dental canddate has been n every cty and town. There s one partcular feature stll worthy of notce and that s, whle the Republcan, Democratc and Populst managers are constantly sendng out forecasts whch fgure the sure electon of ther respectve canddates, each and every man n every party s contnung to work as never before. t s stated that durng the last week of the cam pagn the Republcans wll have up wards of 3000 speakers jn the feld, each one of whom wll make from one to three speeches a day. Such a thng as over-confden- ce has been and wll be unknown n ths campagn of 896. The sensaton or attempt at sensaton of the last mal from the coast s that the Unted States dspatch boat Bancroft wll force the Dardanelles. From the reports n the papers, one would suppose that the Bancroft was one of the Unted States most formdable fghtng craft, suffcently powerful, to wpe every Turksh fort out of estence. After a moments consderaton of the condtons, the whole stuaton as portrayed n the dspatches s etremely funny. n the frst place, the Bancroft s one of the smallest shps n the Amercan navy, and n the second place, to "force the Dardanelles," the Bancroft must pass a lne of forts suffcently well armed to blow three or four good fghtng shps nto smthereens. "There s no doubt the Bancroft s gong to Constantnople as fast as steam can carry her, or just as soon as Mnster Terrell makes a request for her servces." So says the dspatch, and t s safe to say that Mnster Terrell wll not request the servces of the Bancroft wthout frst havng the assurance that the shp wll not; be molested.. When Ella Castle, the wfe of Walter Mchael Castle, a wealthy San Francsco merchant, purlons valuable jewelry, etc., etc., she s known as a kleptomanac, and wll doubtless be the subject of consderable lenency on the part of the court. Let Magge Maloney, a poor, half starved washwoman, take one-tent- h the amount Mrs. Castle stole, and she would be put down as a dangerous thef who should be punshed to the full etent of the law:. "t s the way of the world," and not one n ten thousand stop to consder what ought to be done about t. Secretary Schaeffers letter to the Board of Health shows planly that the Queens Hosptal trustees are anous to fnd out whether the patents treated under the Act to Mtgate are Government patents. Here ndeed s a fne queston to decde, and by ts decson the people wll be able to judge whether the recognton of the socal evl as a lcensed evl s ganng headway or not. To be "Wnthroped" s gettng to be the proper fad n San Francsco. The last man who clams to have been through the treatment states that he gave up funds rather than be tortured, and now refuses to tell who hs assalants were. They may fnd men who out-wnthr- op wll Wnthrop, but those out-campb- ell who can Campbell are few and far between. ds- n the Seventh Congressonal trct of Kentucky the Republcans and j j Sound Money Democrats have combned on W. C. P. Brecknrdge for Congress. Sound money.s a good thng, but f Brecknrdge.s elected t wll have to answer for at least one poltcal crme. Brecknrdge has been eled once, and the doors of Congress ought to be closed to hm forever more. PERSONAL PKCULAl.
