(Baccal'aurcate scrmon preached at Alred Unversty Alred N. Y. June 6948) No age has e- er been so tyrannzed by ts own creatve genus as ours. Whatever we may say or beleve about our tme no one wll serously deny our pre.. occupaton wth thngs. Newsprnt rado and move keep them ever beore us. They are the means o both comort and \var-electrc lght and atomc power. The secrets that are unlocked n the dscoverv o prncples and truths that le back o our many new thngs are a part o the great unversal system. They are n no sense wrong-they do nothng o themselves wthout mplementaton t4te "know how" you wll and \ve are surrounded by myrad ne\.v thngs that would seem strange even to our grandparents. "Tme makes ancent good uncouth" We nsst on beng up to date. Ths nsstence demands ts prce. our tme ders rom others n ths matter t S n degree. We have more opportunty to be tyrannzed by our crea' tures or we lve a lttle arther along the tme stream. The seeds o ths tyranny have been cultvated or a long tme. n the cty o Athens many years ago there arrved an.early Chrstan mssonary traveler. A certan group o men learn" lng o hs presence led hm to the Areopagus that he mght speak hs doctrne to them. The ncdent S treated wth some care n th~ Scrpture and depcts a gather ng o curous.. mnded men havng ther curosty satsed. The sprt o the group S descrbed exactly n Acts 7: 2 HFor all the Athenans and strangers whch were there spent ther tme n nothng else but ether to tell or hear some ne\lj thng" Paul whose home town was the unlver' sty cty o Tarsus n Clca ound t easy to speak to the men o Athens presum.. ably n the Sprt o the unversty club. That he dealt n what was to them a new relgous phlosophy does not dm our pcture o ther preoccupaton wth new thngs even though they be thngs o the mnd. Ths obesance to newnc&s we have ahvays wth U~. t S but a gant's strde CJm AthenK across the mouth o the Aegean Sca to the sland at Patmos to whch John o Ephcsus was banshed or hs nsstence on reedom to worshp as a Chn!-t:u rather than as a subject o Domtan. n hs book called "The Revelaton" he made usc o a pecular lterary orm (apoca.. lypsc) \ljhch ]5 strange to us. Whle hs predctons were never ullll'd n the manner he belleved mmnent there ls a verse we have chosen or ts valldty n human expenence. Men and women o varyng ages and expenences have tcetl' ed that an honest allegance to the Master has led them oten to sense a power other than ther own that makes or rghteous' ness sayng unto them. "Behold make all thngs new. - Revelaton 2: Sa. Ths sense o renewal s not the hlurred and mperect maglnlng o an addct to stmulants- t]s the sober cxpenencc o uprght outrght orthrght men and \J.'omen. t ls a po-'shllty to ;l \vho would seck t. On the one hand there s the never-endng se;{rch or some new thng. on the other hand 6 the perennal expencnce o renewal. The ormer makes dem3nos uron men that ;re exactng to the pont o t yra nny. The latter reduces the tyranny o a nevj thng untl that ~vhch had us n hondage to tsel has become a servant o men our servant hecallsc there ls a povjcr thot makes all thngs new. 3 20 2! '!! t. ' '\ :. ; There are many tests o educaton ocal and unocal and one o them wll be the manner n whch you work out your own approach to these altema' tves. n these two le two derent mo' tvatons-two derent drectons. Nothng Has Been Fnshed Ours s an age o materal wealth. The presdent o nternatonal Busness Ma' chnes Corporaton Thomas J. Watson ] r. wrote ths publshed n the NEA News last February: Nothng has been nshed. n the past ty years Amercan homes have had the advantage o 20 mllon electrc washng machnes~ 8 mllon vacuum cleaners. and 2 mllon mechancal rergerators. There are 28 mllon automobles regstered and 29 mllon telephones n use today. Fty years ago we had a.'bout 400 thousand homes wth central heatng plants. Today we have nearly 8 mllon. We had then about 800 thousand homes wth bathtubs; today (thank goodness) we have nearly 26 mllon. Medcal research has lengthened le and reduced dsease mmeasurably. Snce the twenteth century opened nant mortalty has been reduced rom 00 to 37 per.000 brths. n the same perod the average le o man has ncreased about seventeen years. The ncreased value placed on human relaton has brought about socal securty n ways never dreamed o by the leaders o the nneteenth century. The advantage o publc educaton s open to all. n /2 mllon students were enrolled n elementary and secondary schools. and n /2 mllon were enrolled n these grades. More than 2/2 mllons are regstered n the colleges and unverstes today whereas only 257 thousand were enrolled n 900. Great developments have taken place n the past. but nothng has been nshed. Today. we ace greater opportuntes n all elds o endeavor or people who have ath n ther country and themselves. Mr. Watson has ponted a savng grace :n hs reerence to ath n country and sel. Whence Cometh Securty? These accom plshments are mpressve. They -have served to lghten the burden o lvng; they have delvered mllons o people rom the drudgery o physcal bondage. We would not be wthout them. Even so washng machnes vacuum clean' ers mechancal rergerators automobles telephones central heatng and bathtubs ha ve not saved us rom world crses. Whle we ncrease the le expectancy o man we lower the age o retrement. To our cam puses have come veterans many o them brngng Wves and amles changng the aspect o educaton n many regards but as parents they lnch as surely as anyone who aces the queston ~~Wl my boy grow up to be the target or enemy guns? Wll my amly lve n dread o bombs?" To what purpose s our terrble preoccupaton wth new thngs? They are tyrannous n ther rule over us; we are almost helpless n the ace o some o the mon' sters we create-as wtness the anxety over the uture o atomc power. Se curty does not le n new thngs alone. By themselves they stmulate a unversal greed. mre -Kovacs wntng n the wnter number o the magazne HTalent~~ says: U "There s a book whch could start a revoluton n the Sovet wthn a month' as quoted Presdent Roosevelt last spnng n Georga." uwould t be the Consttuton o the Unted States?" someone asked. UNo. They have a consttuton." HThe Bble?" HNo. They have Bbles. But people don't read them there ether." ~"What book could t be then?" "The Sears Roebuck catalog." There s undoubtedly truth n the state' ment. t could start a revoluton over thngs. Seekng some n~w thng would he popular. revolutonary. But t would be a revoluton over thngs. Lookng through the NEA Journal o Aprl was attracted by a cartoon. n t was represented a move theater w-th an attendance o boys and grls. The move was showng a barren and denuded hlltop on whch cowboys and ndans were battlng to the de'ath. One o the boys watchng the show had turned to the one next to hm and sad... Crtcal stua' ton sn't t? Notce how eroson has eaten away the best topsol. H The punch lne on that.cartoon sets one thnkng. Not just about the slly waste o the natural resources o topsol n our naton but the eroson that s eatng away some o the best o our mnds our sprts. n a world that has battled to the death ths eroson has gone on. We have told ourselves or several years that there would be a naton'wde backwash o moral letdown ollowng the war and we have been rght. Even so we were not really prepared or the magntude o t. We are concerned wth the delnquency o youth but n the last analyss they ha ve merely carred to a logcal conclu' son the atttudes and assumptons o ther elders. You and can see n them the dramatc realty o the eroson o our deals habts atttudes. Whether we lke t or not there s a degree to whch our souls have been denuded to create a dust bowl o moral problems. Magny t su cently and you have natonal and nternatonal problems. The Chrstan traveler to whom we reerred at the begnnng o ths sermon. wrote a letter to the people n Rome n whch he sad HAnd be not conormed to ths world: but be ye trans' ormed by the renewng o your mnd that ye may prove what s that good and acceptable and perect '.vll o God." Romans 2: 2. The Ultmate Source o Renewal Be ye transormed by the renev..rng o your mnd-there t s-the problem we are workng at. Ths s the stu o whch newness o le s created. To pull away rom the tyranny o new thngs one must renew hs mnd. Constant ellowshp wth ~he great sprt o love that broods over the unverse that makes all thngs newths s the ultmate source o renewal. N ow at the close o your college work you look orward to opportunty-to each hs own. n your respectve eld o endeavor. whch ndeed may be an honest search or some new thng you wll ace the problem o the renewal o your mnd your sprt. make bold to suggest a ew bre ponters. do not know that t was ever recorded that a graduatng class took serously what was sad at the baccalau' reate servce but we're gong to suggest and leave the rest to you.. Trust Good People t wll be helpul n the constant re newal o your mnds you wll trust the goodness o good men and women. Some years ago a rend taught me a verse jngle that has stayed wth me snce. t came rom a newspaper column ong' nally beleve. The Department o Englsh mght not accept t as poetry nor the School o Theology accept t ab thc' ology. You have no ath n Man you \;;sy-' No ath n Man? My eye! ~aw you board a plane wth ten And!'-al acro~~ the ~.ky. You have no ath n God you ;S y' No ath n God? ndeed' Then why dd you break up the od And F-cattcr lower ~ced" Every hour we lve by vlrtuc o our trust n others. When we rde n a car we are orced to trust the drver wth our very le. Mountng costs o automoble nsurance prove t. When wc enter a man's house t s n mutual trust. When \ve put money n the hank when we call a doctor or hre a teacher '.ve exhbt trust n our ellow men. When you enrolled n Alred Unversty you demonstrated trust n her aculty her student body. Ths trust n men ;nd women ]s a very real and 5u8.alnln~~ matter. To trust the goodness o good men and women wll lead us a long v..'ay toward trust n the Eternal Sprt n whch all thngs become new. 2. T rust Truth Agan t '.vll help n the renewng o your mnd you wll trust tru.th. Nev~r be arad o truth. Long ago t was sald that t s a weary way to truth but t s a a.r wearer one to a haltruth. Remember the debasement o truth that made Htler. Let's not orget the snster nluence o hs statement that the bgger the le the more readly people wll be' leve t. To ace truth n terms o onesel s educaton. Munger put t HAll truth s an achevement. you would have truth at ts ull value go wn t." Trust t to be worth the wnnng. Seton says umanhood. not scholarshp s the rst am o educaton." There may be danger even n quotatons and ~c hasten to add that there s not necessanly any conlct between manhood and ~ho~' arshp. Nether one s acceptable t makes lght o the other.

4 22 2~ ".. '. j -. " :"!. There are many competent mnds that have been prejudced by'unortunate att.. tudes on the part o weu.. meanng rends. Mnds have been closed to relgon to orms o relgon ncludng worshp and prayer because o antastc clams and demands that have been made n relgon s name. The Chrst has become an unem" ployed carpenter wthout benet o un" employment nsurance. Ths s not only unortunate t s tragc. All truth s o God Hmsel-whether t be n reerence to atomc sson or to the renewng o a mnd and soul bowed down by the weght o crcumstances. one cannot nd and trust truth he s ll"prepared or the next mportant suggeston. 3. Trust God Trust God. HCloser s He than breath.. ng and nearer than hands and eet." HGod s a Sprt: and they that worshp hm must worshp hm n sprt and n truth." John 4: 24. We wakened ths mornng wth an assurance that the day would go orward. the sun ddn't shne or us t would at least be n the heavens. t would set. Day ater day ollows. We do not doubt t. We look out at moon and stars. Wth the telescope we see others--other worlds untl we dscover that our sun s only one o a larger system. Out nto the Mlky Way we march wth our telescope tll we can see no arther only to realze that we are only n the suburbs-we haven t reached the man cty. Yet through t all run unversal laws. Except that we can trust God Hmsel Hs truth s easly prosttuted to selsh purposes. t has been sad that astronomcally man s an n.. sgncant speck on a mnor planet. t has been answered that astronomcally man s the astronomer. Suppose you were gurng your ncome tax only to nd that ths yeat" two plus two equals our but next year t equals ve. Suppose you had reached your bac" cal aureate only to nd that now all that you have learned and been assured o has suddenly been nulled. No we do not lve n that knd o world. uths s my Father s world and to my lstenng ears all nature sngs and round me rngs the musc o the spheres... You do not lve outsde ths wonderul world-you are as natve to t as earth and sky-as ar and water. Trust t or what t s. Trust ts Creator and Sus.. taner. Trust God. 4. T rust Yoursel You have a personalty that s pecularly your own. t relects you. You may be naturally beautul or not-you may be by nature ashoned as a Greek god or a lttle less mposng. What nature gave you n endowment s not your acheve" mente Trust yoursel enough to mprove t. Jean Francos Mllet sad "'Beauty does not le n the ace. t les n the harmony between man and hs ndustry. Beauty s an expresson. When pant a mother try to render her beautul by the mere look she gves her chld." As you gve yoursel to your work you wll not only work out your own salva.. ton n ear and tremblng you wll be showng your most dstnctve character to the world. To try to be beautul or mposng otherwse wll eventually lose or you a precous porton o your very soul. Losng the soul or even a porton o t s a serous matter ether or man or naton. Perhaps you remember what Mr. Van Loon wrote about old Hellas n hs Story o Manknd. You wll remember also that we selected one Scrptural nc dent rom Athens. The Greeks were a people o pecular talent n art. They developed a hgh artstc level. But n the ourth century beore our era the Greek cty states lost ther ndvdualty n the larger order o Alexander o Mace.. don. Says Mr. Van Loon HThe day the lttle cty states o old Hellas lost ther ndependence and were orced to become a part o a bg naton the old Greek sprt ded. And t has been dead ever snce." Ths quotaton was not gven to try to undermne the untng o natons n the eort to establsh a world order. Cer.. tanly there wll be no lastng peace untl each o the soveregn member states recog' nzes the pecular value n every member and bulds the over' all order upon that recognltlpn. Conversely there can be no lastng peace untl each member brngs to the peace table the very best o tsel unstntngly unselshly and wth mutual regard. But-we dgressed to speak o a naton whle tryng to draw a pattern or a man although t s equally true or both..... To thne own sel be true and t must ollo'\v as the nght the day-thou canst not then be alse to any man." Trust yoursel to brng your best sel to the world s personalty market. t was the late Presdent Tat who sad that the greatest menace to democracy s not n the mpulses but n the ndolence o the masses. 5. Make Wse Choces For the sake o renev.ral o mlnd make your choces as v.rsely as possble. There are men '\Vho say that we are the result o only two orces-heredty and envron.. mente They take the sum o heredtary characterstcs bequeathed n the blended blood stream o all o our ancestors add to t the orces at work about us and say that ths smple problem n addton wll gve us ourselves. They omt one very mportant actor namely our ablty to choose. n one o the recent translatons o the Scrpture s a verse that everyone should know HThe sprtual man s alve to all true values. Few o us have dculty n choosng between somethng '\vholly rght and some' thng wholly '-vrong. Our perplextes de' velop when the pcture s not so clearly cut. When '-ve must consder matters o degree o derence we long or that sprtual grace that s alve to all true values that would hep us n our choce. There are some very apparent matters o choce that tell a great deal about us. What do you most enjoy spendng your money or? What do you do '\vth your spare tme? What would you most lke to be? Not long ago there appeared n one o the popular magaznes a parlor game that has n t the seeds o real nterest. Par' tcpants were asked H you had ve mnutes to talk to anyone you '\vshed ln the "vhole world '\vho would t be?" -vonder the conversaton '\vould renew your mnd your zest or le. Some o the most mport.-.nt choccs that one can make. you have already made. There are others that you wll make rom tme to tme. Make them as v.rscy as you can. You know what: happens to your pcture when the camera s out o ocus t s blurred. You know \vhat happens to the musc when your rado s not properly tuned t s ndstnct or ds torted. or dsturbed by statc. Your chojcc.s are equally mportant to you. \\Thcthcr you're votng or a presdent or makng or recevng- a proposal o marrage make your choce as wsely as posshle. These ve suggestons leave wth you: Trust the goodncss o good men and women; trust truth; trust C;od; trust your' sel; make your choces as \"rscly as you can. Ths s not the -vh0e o he but an mportant segment. Alred the Mother o Men To everyone who has ever attended Alred there s an appeal and a challenge n the vjords: NCEt]ed away 'md the Empre St;jtc hlllr. ~Neath the watch care o :entncl pjne~ Where the murmurns! SCENCE AND RELGON The greatest thng n the world s re' lgon. But many people thnk that scence s all mportant and relgon s outmoded. Now the whole unverse and everythng n t s run scentcally. God s the Author and Drector o t all. So how can there be anythng but complete har' mony between scence and relgon? God s the Master Scentst and the Bble s Hs Word. Just because some o our presentday scentsts are unable to harmonze the wordng o the Bble wth some o ther theores s no proo that the Bble s not true. Even some mnsters o the gospel seem to have dculty n belevng the story o the vrgn brth and the dvnty o Chrst. But the greater the advancement o scence the nearer we nd t s n harmony wth the Bble or the tme beng a person cannot understand some thngs n the Bble and cannot prove them scentcally he should take them n ath. There are many thngs happen' ngs n everyday le and n scence that we are unable to prove or understand but we do not doubt them. Many have doubted that the earth can be destroyed n the twnklng o an eye. And then the atom bomb comes. a mllon tmes more atoms were released than when the lapa nese ctes were bombed t s easy to understand how the whole earth could be changed nto dust and gas. No man has ever made one seed o a plant or tree and put le nto t. Scence never saved a soul. and t has not that purpose. t has helped to make us more comortable physcally but has not queted our souls nor gven us peace o mnd or brought us ellowshp wth God. - H. N.
