After showng by llustraton and by pre cept somethng of the feversh age n whch we are rvng so full of unrest. and dssatsfacton Brother Van Horn sad ~ ths text s approprate for our tme and should be heeded. Have we come here dscouraged over the sgns of the tmes over the worldlness of our feversh age? Then lsten to the words: "Be stll and know that am God." May we as dd the prophet of old see God lfted up n the temple. Let us learn even here to st quet be stll and kno~ our God. After Eljah was ready to de from ds.couragements he found God and by the stll small voce was qrected to the best work of hs lfe. May t be so here. We must hear Gods voce callng us to march on wth hm. Be stll and know that am God calls for more Bble study and devoton; more tnle for prayer. Prayer opens the very gate of heaven where lke Jacob at Bethel we may see angelsde- scend1g and ascendng. ft us for servce. These thngs wn Fve Good Addresses On On the second FacngOur Responsbltes day of Conference.after the report of the Sabbath School Board by Doctor Lavetle Burdck and a report of the Commttee 0~1 ndustv and Servce by Pastor James L. Skagg~. and the Federal Councl Commttees report Elder John C.Branch led n devotonal servce. Hs lesson was n Romans 12 and the burden 6f hs remarks was to the effect that every hnderng thng may be lad asde and. that the Holy Sprt may lead- n the path of unty and Chrstan love. -May he gve us the sprt of work ~and real servce. lvlay every effort n reports n sermons n songs and n addresses be blessed of God. Then came the fve short addresses on the general theme: "Facng Our Respons- bltes." 1. n.home Tranng by Rev. Edgar D. Van Horn; 2. n Chrstan Educaton by Esle F. Randolph; 3. n ndustry by Rev. James L. Skaggs; 4. n Cvc Lfe by Rev. Ero E. Sutton; 5. n nternatonal Relato~s by Presdent S. Orestes Bond. All these speakers but Brother Sutton had papers whch wll be found n the RE CORDER. Brother Suttons remarks were extempore and we gve the substance of them here as best we can: Wth the many problems of economc socal and farmng condtons Amerca needs a Chrstanty that fu1tcto1l-s rather than a formal eccle-sastcsm. A vtal Chrstanty wll go farther toward solvng our natonal problems than anythng else. Chrst was practcal. He ponted out the poltcal and socal evls of hs day taught men how to correct them and showed hs followers that relgon wthouf works s dead.. A vtal relgon wll put men and women on the job n any. rghteous work. t wll cause- them to work and vote as they pray.. too many forget ther relgon when they go to the polls to vote. would lke to be able always to vote my party tcket; but can not do so when some of ts canddates are unworthy of my support. For the most part Amercans obey law; why gnore the Prohbton Amendment and enforcement laws. No loyal ctzen has reason to complan of them; but "No rogue eer feels the halter draw wth good opnon of the "law." Yes Amerca needs a vtal ~hrstanty that wll make her ctzens fearless n-facng ther tasks. Brother Sutton closed wth the words of Abraham Lncoln: "Let every Amercan every lover of/lberty every well-wsher to hs posterty swear by the blood of the Revoluton never to volat~ n the least partcular the law of the country and never to tolerate ts volaton by others. "Let reverence for the law be breathed by every Amercan mother to the lspng babe that prattles on her lap; let t be taught n schools n semnares and n colleges; let t be wrtten n prmers spellng books and n almanacs; let t be preached from the pulpt proclamed n legslatve halls and enforced n courts of justce. "And n short let t become the poltcal r~lgon of the naton;. and let the old and

We gve the report as handed n by the secretary and feel sure our readers wll gve t a careful study. The ffteen tems "Dpped from the Stream"; the fourteen "Recommendatons"; the seven planks n "Our Platform"; the seven tems n "Our Program"; the complete "Onward Movement Budget" and the last page "By Way of Comparson" are all too full of nterest to be allowed to go unread. "By Way of Comparson" under the last headng of the report shows you at a glance somethrg of the steady ncrease n gfts for the Lords go?d work n fve years. Who can thnk of stoppng now?. Chldrens Work t was mpossble for the n Conference edtor to attend the outsde meetngs _ whch were usually held durng Conference hours. Four days of Conference at three oclock there was a specal servce for chldren n the college buldng n charge of Mrs. Wllard D. Burdck who was asssted by others n ths good work. Then on Sabbath day a very nterestng demonstraton of chldrens work was gven n whch abo\!t sxty chldren took part. The drectors wll supply some descrpton of the" work for the Chldrens Department. Young People More and more as the years At Conference go by. actve nterest :n denomnatonal matters by the young people s clearly seen n our annual gatherngs. Ths year there was a larger number than usual present n Conference and the three assocatons already held have been charac: terzed b :;sspecal and nsprng actvtes of fne groups of- young people. Each day at Mlton specal servces were held at one-thrty called "Yqung Peoples Actvtes." There was a fellovshp socal. _to begn wth.and then came "A Workers Conference" commttee conferences" a fellowshp breakfast and the regular program of the Young Peoples Board. We leave the~ matter of presentng the good papers and addresses for our readers n the Young Peoples Department of the SABBATH RECORDER" to the Young Peoples Board. Womans Board The -afternoon of Wed At Conference nesday was gven. to the program of the Womans Board. t was a great day n more respects than qne. The meetng was n charge of Mrs. Allen B. West. Besdes the usual reports there was a celebraton of the forteth annversary of the organzaton of the Womans Board whch took place at the Conference at Lost Creek \"1. Va. n The reports of ths. meetng wll appear n the W oman.s Department of the RECOR DER; so no attempt at a specal descrpton of the program wll be needed here.. There were two dvsons of the program -Vson and Realzaton. The Vson represented the outlook of those attendng the nformal meetng held forty years ago n whch the queston of organzng a womans. board was dscussed and settled. Twelve persons dressed n the style of 1884 and representng the men and women of that day marched n and held conven- \ ton on the platform. n ths conventon opnons for and aganst organzaton were presented and the decson to organze was reached. The Vson Realzed came next. n ths was gven a summary of last yeaes work by the correspondng secretary and a most nterestng revew of the achevemen.ts of forty years. Ths was gven n large sheets on an easel wth the good thngs done ~ prnted n large black type. Each sheet was read by Mrs. H. C. Van Horn so all could hear and then removed untl all the recofd was read. 1 After ths demonstraton of the "Vson Realzed" there was no chance left for any one to doubt the \vsdom of organzng n Womans Board n n ths sesson a large womans -chorus of about twenty. persons from Albon Ws. cparmed the audence wth ther sngng. Mss Gladys Hulett.9f! Bolvar.. " THE N. Y. sang a solo. Then came a pageant n whch representa~ves of the varous socetes of the denomnaton marched and counter marched wth more than forty _ banners up and down the asles. t" was a great demonstraton n whch about two hundred women took part. The slogan of ths parade was: "n the name of God we set. up our banners.". Mrs. May - Ross Davs gave several tableaux n whch young people n costpmes represented scenes n the home socal and school lfe of Chna. The ~logan on the frst page of ths program was: "What hath God wrought?" _ A Great Prohbton OnvV ednesday eve Meetng. nng there was ndeed a great prohbton meetng. The program began wth excellent movng pctures showng the dfference bet~een c<!ndtons n ~he home lfe and n the lquor bus_ness before and snce the Eghteenth Amendment was enacted. -Ths was a most convncng demonstraton of the good results of -prohbton.. The Mlton College Quartet sang and responded to an encore. Then came two. strong addresses and an excellent paper by Presdent B. C. Davs. The frst was by Thomas W. Gale superntendent of educaton n Wsconsn. The speaker was certanly a lve wre and made art address whch my pen s not able to report n a way that wll do t justce. The-last speaker was Dr. Scott ~cbrde presdent of the Natonal Ant-Saloon League. He was glad Uncle Sam s gettng after the real crm~1s by pushng the. brewers" and bootleggers behnd prson bars. The lquor traffc never -dd obey the law even n lcense fmes; and now mllons of dollars are beng spent n efforts to. show prohbton a falure. _ All eyes are _ turned toward Amerca and what we do wll settle the matter for the world. Have fath n God do your duty and the Eghteenth Amendment wll stay and law wll be enforced. - Presdent Davs haspronlsed hs excel SABBATH RECORDER 291 lent address for the RECORDER. t wll come n due tme. At the close of. ths meetng Brother Hosea W. Rood offered the followng resoluton whch was adopted by the General Conference: -Resolved That ths Seventh Day Baptst. General Conference"n annual sesson at Mlton Ws. January put tself on record as postvely" n favor of the followng propostons: Frst-That practcal relgon and cvc rghteousness are closely related. Second-That t s the duty of every voter to nterest hmself or herself ntellgently n cvc affars and to vote at every electon for such men and measures as n hs or her best judgment wll be for the hghest good of our sta te and naton. WHTFORD (Gven at Conference at the Educaton Socetys Hour) My subject may be a trfle msleadng as do nc?t plan t? talk about the technque of makng a wll nor of the precautons that one needs to take to make sure of havng hs wshes carred out after he s dead and gone; but rather of the mportance of -study and care to make a good wll. The prvlege of makng dsposton of ones property after death s one of the to~~ns of our cvlzaton. The savage ret~uns control by force or cunnng of what he has; and when force and cunnng fal as they must fal wth the) weakness of age and fnally be extngushed -wth hs death then he has lost all power to control what once was hs. Our modern cvlzaton as manfest n the laws and customs of our land assures to us the prvlege of havng Our property go to those who are near to u~ by the tes ~f relatonshp. O~ we Can gnore the demands of relaton Shp an~ bestow our property outsde. of the f~mly. as reason. or fancy may suggest. Wth ths power to make a wll comes a moral oblgaton to make a good one. There are tp be sure many hndrances roof when t does not ran? And when t do~s ran of course he can not repar t. t S easy to say What s the use of makn~ a wll when a man s well and strong? ~ t ~s very easy to f org t that the tme when t S no longer practcable to make a wll may come very suddenly. All of these dffcultes are very real but they can be met ~nd ~.ll be met b; the man of resolute dsposton. t s no worse to be judged of men for the drec:" tons that we leave after death than for the deeds whch we do now. We must of a. necessty be makng dscrmnatons. The. very fact of our acqurng property nvolves the oblgaton of dsposng of t. f yve do not spend our ~oney we must leave 1t.. The man who has sense enough to put a good roof on hs house when t does not ran ought to have sense enough to gve drectons for the dsposal of hs property w:hen he des. : There are ndeed many cases n whch the law oj decedent estates saves. a man the trouble of makng a wll. But. even when a mans property wll go just where he would have t go he can often save trouble and money by makng a wll ;-to say nothng of assurng hs dear ones of hs thoughtful care by gvng explct drectons.. Not long ago a man n Hornell ded wth- out a wll leavng a wfe and three chldren.. Hs wdow had to get apponted guardan for each of the three chldren. and gve bonds n each case and has to make an annual report for each. Another year wth ts record of falure or success has passed nto the hstory of the Womans Board. We thank God that he. has.~pared us to work together for hm "we beng many are one body n Chrst.". As a board we have been called to mourn the los~ by death of one of our fathful vce presdents Mrs. A. R. Crandall who for years has carred the nterests ~f the board on her heart and who was always.ready to defend the C4tse and gve freely of loyal sympathy and encouragement. We rejoce jn the memory of her usefulexemplary lfe. The annual letter outlnng the work of the budget was sent out early n the year. At that tme we hoped to be able.to report at the end of the year a womans socety n ~very church n the denomnaton. That hope has not been realzed. The women of several of our small churches where the membershp s scattered do not feel able to keep up an organzed socety for regular work. Perhaps they need the personal touch of a vstor on the feld. However we beleve our assocatonal secretares are capable of dong ths work and wll do t the comng year. We fnd that 48 socetes have reported. Last year only 42 of the 51 sent n reports. They gve a total resdent membershp of 1495 an ncrease of 106 above the report of last year; non-resdent membershp 235 an advance of 88 more than the last report; total members~hp The treasurers report wll show that wth the excepton of our pledge to the Tract Socety our For-. ward Movement pledge has been met. Two tems of our regular budget fell short the Retred Mnsters fund and the Twenteth "Century Endowment fund; perhaps because other appeals have enlsted sympa- thy and support. The Parallel budget Mlton College Thanksgvng offerng~ and contrbutons for the beneft of the colored people of. Asbury Park N. ]. and personal gfts for the Grls School n Shangha out- sde of the Parallel budget have come nto our treasurers hands. More than the usual amount has been rased for local work and general benevolence. For local work a total of $ was rased whle general benevolence has receved the sum of $ makng a total of $ not accounted for n the treasurers report. Who wll accuse our women of beng nactve? We could tell of qulted qults knotted comforters canned frut sewj?g rags for rugs etc.. as a means of rasng funds for the work.. One socety helped tpsc tend the church cotton to earn money to gve; also much free sewng and. other w.ork has. been done where needed of whch no record s made. And wthal very hearty and generous have been the gfts from many of the socetes toward th~!outfttng of Doctor and Mrs. George Thorngate for the Chna Msson. But we beleve that n dong what we ought we deserve no prase because t s our duty. and "the reward of duty s to fulfll another.".j _ Thus we leave the record of the year wth the prayer" " "We have not known thee as we ought Nor learned thy wsdom grace and power; The thngs of earth have flled our thought And trfles of the passng hour. Lord gve us- lght thy truth to see And make us wse n knowng thee." As woe are about to enter upon a ne\v year of servce we;. wsh to thank God for the blessngs of the past and to 0 take ncreased courage for t4e work of the future~ for "We know that every day wll brng us good Above our poor deservng ; We know that on the road of lfe" Hs love s leadng us along And never swervng.; As we consder the hertage of ever ncreasng opportuntes and new possbltes of servce left us by those who wth nspraton and consecrated devoton began organzed work for women n our denomnaton we do not dare to thnk of retrenchment nor do w~ n any way desre to lessen c any actvty that has for ts object the brngng:of souls nearer to the feet of Jesus Chrst the Savor of the world. "For t pleased the Father that n hm should all fullness dwell." We long to see the cause bult up at home and n forejgn lands and are some- ~ tmes tempted wth dscouragements because our efforts seem so ptably small n results. But we realze that ndvdualresponsblty n small thngs fathfully and lovngly accepted n tself tends for growth and larger attanments. "And whosoever shall gve to drnk unto one of these lttle ones a cup of cold water only n the name of a dscple.... shall n no wse lose hs reward.". Under the headng "What would you lke to see done?" one socety suggests "n every possble way ncrease the sprt of denomnatonalloyalty." "More socablty and more sprtualty n our socablty" s another good workng dea. "They that feared the Lord spake often one to another" Another suggeston s to. keep n close touch wth lone Sabbath keepers wrte them letters of love and good cheer "wthout duns or denuncatons" as Mss Baley wotld put t. Where our H. E. Davs mssonary famly has gone ths year an ncreased nterest n mssons has been stmulated. We can not keep them wth us but mssonary programs and mssonary studes help to keep the heart on fre wth longng for the advancement for the cause of mssons.
