THE FEDERAL COUNCL AT ST LOUS n December 196 the Federal Councl of Churches of Chrst met at St Lous Vol V And near the close of that report on p 242 of that same RECORDER under the 8th headng you wll fnd the declaraton and the "pledge" above quoted Ths proves above all cavl that the report of the Commsson on Su?day Ob- servance was adopted n full Wthout the changes we were told were made and leav:es the Federal Councl of Churches of Chnst n Amerca commtted to a dec1aratop drectly opposed to a fundament(ll Se~;nth Day Baptst d~ctrne when the~ sad ~he Frst Day of the week has dvne sancton and approval" and not only s the Federal Councl commtted but t s "pledged" to tt seek JJ the "enactment" and the "enforce- ment" of "both" state and federal laws for the upreservaton of the Chrstan Sabbath JJ THE SABBATH RECORDER: WHAT OUR MEN DD From personal letters receved from Brother Shaw explanng ther acton and from snatches of ther wrtngs n th~ RE CORDER all of whch practcally agree on ths pont wth the mnutes of the Councl we learn that when our men saw thatthe report of the commsson was not changed as they wshed and that t would go to the Busness Commttee ncorporatng ~~ose two bad features and n all probabl- ty would be reported to the Councl tself n that form they prepared a statement concernng these two obj ectonable features to be read hefore the whole Councl whenever ths report should appear for consderaton and acceptance And a brllant (?) pronouncement t s And yet Conference could not grasp t and called on these men to ((nterpret" t And ths nterpretaton s about as brllant as the thng nterpreted LET US ASK A FEW OUESTONS What Gaused them to make ths state ~ent to the Councl? t was the two ponts tn the report that are especally obj ectonablt to Seventh Day Baptsts What are the objectonable ponts? Why dd not the Federal Councl st glum and unmoved afte~ the readng and demand an "nterpr~tatton"? Smply because they accepted ther statement for ts face value and that amounted to an unqualfed surrender of our whole causeto the enemy And yet our men n ther Ulnterpret~ton n try to make t appea! that they d!d not mean that f they dd not mean t why dd they not dsll?s~?n the Fe~er~~ Councl? nether Hs ear heavy that t can not hear:" (sa 59: ) LTTLE GENESEE "OVER THE TOP" F SWHTFORD The Lttle Genesee Church the same as " other churches has ts fnancal dffcultes and problems The pledge card system has been n use here for some tme but the - ~mounts pledged have been slow about comng n makng t necessary for the treasurer to advance money to keep up church expenses For the past few years and especally last year a large amount has been expended for necessary repars and mprovements on the church and parsonage The money for ths was rased ether by solctors or by callng the people together at a specal meetjng and supper as n case of the cemetery fence when $70000 was rased n one evenng All of these causes as well as the Red Cross and war calls took so much of the peoples thoughts and money that the church and denomnatonal pledges fell way short Most o-f us fgured that as long as there would be som~ny outsde calls for lnoney we would make our church pledge the same as last year or less and let the other fellow make t up Result: our weekly collecton averaged about $1400 When t requred an averageof $293& per week to rase our budget Ths fact was not -dscovered nor worred about by anyone exceptng the treas- urer who had been advancng thedefcetcy ~ for the pastors salary and other mmedate expenses out of her own pocket She made an attempt to brng the stuaton before the communty but succeeded n alarmng 110 one except herself _ The church trustees next awoke to the sjtuaton when they called a meetng to arrange for necessary repars about the church and parsonage and dscovered that the only way to buy roofng to repar the parsonage barrl was to send the charnlan around wth a paper The sad charman had just fnshed one of that knd of money-rasng excursons and he recalled the hearty greetngs tales of woe etc that he ~ust accept along wth the money and the feelng that he s to blame because the roof leaks and money must be rased so -he unloaded to the pastor and the Fnance Commttee The FnanceConlmttee met and pondered over the stuatqn: $ had been pledged and the budget called for $ THE SABBATH RECORDER - The only feasble plan for rasng ths amount that came to the commttee was the one followed bysome of the Methodsts" of assessng each member Ths however -dd not seem advsable so they decded to get as many as possble out to church the followng Sabbath ( Aprl 20) and have fve or sx talk on the condtons and needs ot the church The commttee agreed that f Dr Hulett could be aroused on the subject he could~ turn arouse the people as to one else could " The doctor agr~ed to be aroused On copdton that he could have access to the pledge cards and could be the last on the program The entre meetng tme after the ntroductory servce ncludng the Sabbathschool hour was utlzed n ths servce~ F S Whtford opeled the remarks by presentng the stuaton from the vewpont of the trustees-"mprovements Repars and-no Funds" Next O M Burdck brought out very forcbly "Th~ Value of the Church to the Communty" He put several questons lke "How many would lke to lve n a communty where there s no ~hurch?"
