How nce can one be wthout gvng them an undue advantage n ther carefully rehearsed propagand'a efforts? Are you sure enough of your own Bble kn~wledge to detect the onesdedness of thers? Most of those we have seen n recent years have been mnors or members of mnorty groups or races. t has appeared to us that they were chosen for door-todoor work wth that n mnd - to appeal to the senstveness of the Chrstan conscence. Good people would not be mpolte to such. f our estmate s corr~ct and representatves are ndeed cho~en Wth a vew to playng on our syrnpath:s, then we should act n accordance Wth the errors of the Jehovah's Wtness system as well as n accord'ance wth Chrs1tan courtesy... The best defense aganst acceptlng counterfets s a thorough knowledge of the true con of the realm. Do we know what we beleve and why? Wth a ready-made, gant advertzng space under the theater name, the church decded to use the facltes. n addton to the name of the temple and the hour of the evenng servce a hugeletter queston was arranged. t read: "Why Pray When You Can Worry?" t s probable that the man who carred the words up the ladder got the order mxed a lttle. We wonder, however, f there are not a good many Chrstans who mght not admt the atttude but who, n practce, shove prayer asde as f worryng were more pleasant. Those who wrte books on prayer testfy that there s a naturalness about prayer - and there s. On the other hand, prayer s supernatural; worry s natural. Some people are content to spend a weekend wth Jesus, but balk at havng Hm as a permanent guest. fgures tell us rather clearly the fnancal task that yet les ahead of us. To rase $38,885 n three months when n recent months we have contrbuted only about $6,000 per month means some real effort and sacrfce - a sacrfce comparable to what some of our poorly pad representatves on home and foregn felds are mak ng. The correspondence whch one must carryon n ths work takes a great deal of tme. Some requests can be answered quckly, others requre days and sometmes weeks to fulfll. n past years most of the correspondence seemed to concern genealogy, etc. Whle there have been many such requests ths year, there have been even more requests for nformaton about the hstory and background of the S~venth Day Baptst Denomnaton, the hstory o~ ndv~ual churches, or requests for ad n majong specal studes of a der:omnatonal nature. 4 L. Skaggs. Ths church was known as the Seventh Day Baptst Church of Delaware, - Chrstan County, Mo. t was organzed Aprl 29, 1882, by the Rev. Samuel R. Wheeler. The leader of the group was the Rev. Leroy F. Skaggs, a Baptst mnster, who accepted the Sabbath truth n 1882, and n turn nfluenced others. The followng resoluton was adopted by the group at ther frst busness meetng. Resolved, That we tender our thanks to the Seventh Day Baptst Mssonary Board for ther love of the great cause of Chrst n ths part of God~s vneyard n that they sent our beloved brother - Elder Samuel R. Wheeler - to ad n ths our tme of great need to organ~e us nto a Seventh Day Baptst Church and thus plantng the stand, ard of truth more fully, and our prayer to Almghty God s that the Board may con' tnue n ths great work n other parts of God s vneyard, and we resolve to do all we can to ad n ths great work, God beng our Helper. ' Ths church had an actve exstence of some 20 years and exerted consderable nfluence n the communty. Another nterestng and valuable accesson was a fle of letters from Mlton College. These had been wrtten to the Rev. and Mrs. Solomon Carpenter and they cover a perod from 1847 nto the 1870's. t s very evdent that the Carpenters had urged ther frends n the homeland to wrte of the every-day, smple happenngs. Ths many of ther frend's dd and as the letters come from dfferent sectons, they gve an nterestng pcture of events and people n Westerly, Ashaway, Planfeld, New Market, Shloh, De Ruyter, Brookfeld, Berln, Alfred, l\lton, and New York Cty. Even poltcs have a place. Quotatons from one letter formed the bass for an artcle on the Westerly (Pawcatuck) Church whch appeared n the Sabbath Recorder a few weeks ago. We hope to use others from tme to tme. Maton College also recently sent som,e valuable books and manuscrpts whch had been housed n ther lbrary, among them a complete fle of The Peanlall" People, a weekly journal "devoted to Jewsh nteres'ts, poltcal, socal, lterary, and r,elgous." There s a dsposton for Protestant and Roman Catholc to combne n campagns for such legslaton. The opposton, composed of Adventsts, Jews, Seventh Day Baptsts, and a few others, s n a hopeless mnorty. Advocates of the law argue that t s for health purposes only and that relgous consderatons are not nvolved. Opponents contend that a Sunday closng law does, nevertheless, mpnge upon ther relgous freedom snce t crmps ther means of lvelhood. There s force n both arguments. People who don't have sense enough to qut busness n one day n the week ought to be made to by law. But why prescrbe the day ths has to be? Only at that pont, t would seem, are -relgous mplcatons nvolved. Let there be not Sunday laws, but.. one n seven" laws. Ths leaves choce of the day for rest and worshp up to the ndvdual where t properly belongs. *The edtors of Church and State are Glenn L. Archer and C. Stanley Lowell, men who have spoken n Seventh Day Baptst churches. Our people may well express apprecaton for the stand taken by the edtor of ths POAU organ. Jew, asssted' by Ch. Th. Lucky. After Mr. Fredlaender's death about a year later, the Tract Socety assumed ts publcaton, wth the Rev. Wllam C. Daland, as edtor. n 1894 the Revs. S. S. Powell and Wllam C. Whtford were added to the edtoral staff'. The lbraran s thoroughly convnced that we as a people need to be more aware of our hertage and our responsblty. We need to stress the facts of whch we have every reason to be proud, and not emphasze alone the amusng features or eccentrctes of the leaders of old. t s the functon of the Hstorcal Socety to lead n ths. 5 "CHRSTAN ~DlJCATON - See. ~e" ~. Zwebel ~~~n~w LS ~lq)~11~ For many years several persons n the Seventh Day Baptst denomnaton wshed for an organzaton that would draw our youth closer together. t seemed that the natural agency to accomplsh the wsh would be a natonal organzaton of the young people. When the Rev. Harley Sutton was secretary of the Board of Chrstan Educaton, he carred the dea and had t well on ts way untl he was forced by ll health to resgn hs poston. (No doubt the Young People's Board, whch operated for many years before t was merged wth other boards. to becom.e. the Board' of Chrstan Educaton, had VS10ns _of some such organzaton. We would be glad to hear from Seventh Day Baptsts who were members of the Young People's Board regardng the work that they dd n regard to natonal organzaton.) Varous steps were taken under succee? ng board secretares. As remember t, offcers were elected at the 1946 Pre-Con, and then agan at the 1947 meetng n Ashaway, R.. Ths dea was abandoned because of a lack of cohesveness. The offcers were too wdely scattered. for effectve acton. Wth the present Youth Work Co~mttee charman, J. Paul Green, Jr., n charge, under the leadershp of the board secretary, the Rev. Neal D. Mlls, the present venture was launc.h~d. A letter wth suggestons for organzng ~as sc:nt to the local churches. Later a questtonnalfe was crculated askng the opnons of our youth socetes as to name, dues, ams, etc. All who repled agreed that the name should be Seventh Day Baptst Youth Fellowshp. The name apples t~ t~e natonal organzaton, to Assoclatlonal groups, and to local socetes as well. The ams were developed and presented. The dues were s,et at $1.00 per year payable n January. The natonal offcers are the members of the Youth Work Commttee of the Board of Chrstan Educaton. The offcers ths year are S. Kenneth Davs, Dck Stearns, Ernest K. Bee, Carol Harrs, Roberta Armstrong, Luan SUltton, James Burdck, Alse Ogden, Hllar lves, J.. Paul Green, charman, and Rex Zwebel, ex offco. Some of these folk wll have to be replaced as they do not plan to be n the A,lfred area next year. The commttee members come from hgh school, college, and semnary, and two are youthful publc school teachers. They serve an average of 2-3 years. Others who have served on the commttee n recent years nclude the Revs. Charles Bond and Vctor Skaggs, Mrs. Lola Sutton Webster, the Rev. Donald E. Rchards, Ever, ett Harrs, Jr., and Mrs. Harrs (Barbara Warren), Lyle Sutton, Camlle Crofoot Harrs, and Marlyn Osborn Davs. t s expected that Barbara Cruzan and Helena Knox wll agree to become members ths fall. The Youth Work Commttee meets monthly, and ts chef concerns are plannng Pre-Con actvtes for youth and young adults, plannng and arrangng for youth actvtes at Gen~ral Confer~~ce, workng on SDBYF poltcy and actvty, promotng Youth Week and Camper exchange, and securng and sendng out feld workers. The publcaton of the Beacon, our youth magazne, always s of great concern to the commttee. There are approxmately 1?0 members of the Natonal SDBYF. t S our hope that that number may be doubled n After havng been n effect for almost one year, the organzaton wll be under concerned dscusson n the General Conference commttee to revew the work of the Youth Work Commttee. t s our prayer that greater servce mght be rendered to God and man through our SDBYF program. Dr. Gates keynoted the openng mass meetng of the 45th nternatonal Chrstan Endeavor Conventon n the Baptst Temple n the Cty of Brotherly Love. n hs address he lfted up the current theme of Chrstan Endeavor, whch wll contnue for the next two years: "For Chrst and the Church." n speakng of the conventon theme, "Forward - For Chrst and the Church," Dr. Gates sad: "Ths theme takes the tradtonal motto of the movement and propels t nto new acton. Assuredly, such acton s our dvne responsblty, frst n ths conventon, and even more as we move out from t. Countless decsons wll be made here, some affectng the lves of ndvduals, others the lfe of the total church. Prepare now for dedcaton of the hghest and best." He challenged them to 'advance n the area of recrutment" and ponted out that a recent survey shows that by 1970 the teenage populaton wll be double that of "Let us be ready to brng these young people nto the Chrstan lfe," Dr. Gates sad. "The growng needs of the day challenge us to a massve campagn for temperance," Dr. Gates contnued. "The dangers of the use of alcohol and tobacco, as well as narcotcs, must be made clear to the youth of the contnent. Chrst-centered ctzenshp and effectve leadershp tranng are our mperatves today. "t s not enough to merely mantan our status quo; the mandate of the day s 'Advance!'" concluded Dr. Gates. "To ths end we must re-study our hertage and resources, we must determne to take postve new steps, and we must ever affrm, '... wll do whatever He would lke to have me do.' "!" The trouble today s that parents n many, many homes have gven the tranng of ther chldren over to ngeorge," because we lve n a fast-movng world. By Vctora My topc beng about tranng n the home would lke to use saah 54: 13: "All thy chldren shall be taught of the Lord: and great shall be the peac~ of thy chldren." The suggestons here gven may not work n every famly. Parents are dfferent; chldren are dfferent; so are crcumstances and envronments. Parents do need help today. Many are at ther wt's end to know what to do wth ther chldren. n ther hearts they long to brng them up rght and they try to do t, f t s a Chrstan home. But they stand by helpless as ther boys and grls get "out of hand," and jon the boys and grls brought up n non-chrstan homes. We seem to have a generaton of rebellous chldren. Youth rebels aganst all types of authorty; so parents should work hard. t means beng everlastngly on the job day and nght from chldhood to youth, from youth to manhood and womanhood. We must watch over our chldren wth ceaseless vglance. f we want to brng up our chldren rght, we cannot leave them half the tme wth the neghbors, or the best babystter we know. Neghbors or babystters are not a substtute for a mother. Do hear you say, "n our famly mother has to go out to work? Many a tme he wanted to relax, especally on Monday mornng when the thought of begnnng work on the next sermon was not nvtng. At such tmes he remembered hs father's words, and dscplne through the years kept hm at hs task. Let your chldren's earlest thoughts be about Jesus and Hs love. As soon as they can read, teach them to study ther weekly Bble lesson. Urge them to say ther prayers every nght before they go to sleep and each mornng when they get up.. These are prceless habts whch wll stay wth them through lfe. As often as you can gather the chldren around, read the grand old Bble stores n famly worshp. Have them pray aloud and repeat the Lord's Prayer together at the close. Unted prayer bnds a famly together n ther love and n servce to God. Teach prvate Bble study and prayer so that each chld bulds up hs own connectons wth God. Chldren who come to regard Jesus as ther frm, true frend' n ther earlest days wll turn to Hm n perods of stress and.stran n years to come. Keep Them Busy Keep your chldren and young folk busy. The old sayng that "Satan fnds some evl always, for dle hands to do" s true. Chldren and youth are normally so full of lfe that f they are not engaged n somethng good they wll surely be up to mschef. don't mean parents should be thnkng up one job after another for ther chldren to do. That doesn't make for a happy famly. Chldren must have tme to play. But as.soon as they are old enough to do lttle jobs they should be taught to do them. t sn't rght that mother should get the supper ready and wash the dshes whle John and Mary run the streets or watch TV. Chldren can be a marvelous help around the place f you get across the dea that t s ther duty and' prvlege to keep the home runnng and nce, because t s ther home. When they catch ths dea they wll help wthout holdng out ther hands to be pad for every lttle servce. Lay responsbltes upon your chldren and youth and see that they carry them out. Ths wll teach self-relance and make them trustworthy n days to come. Ths wll take tme, too. t s easy enough to gve a chld a job, but consderably more dffcult to see that t s done, and' t takes real perseverance to nsst that t be done over and over untl t s done rght. One of the curses of the present age s "passng the buck," known as, "Let George do t. " Work s regarded as somethng to be by-passed f possble, or hurred through, no matter how slpshod the task s done. The remedy for ths dsease of rresponsblty must be appled n chldhood. Chldren traned n the ways have suggested wll grov.' nto dependable youth. As parents we know that such basc character trats as honesty, dependablty, and courage are the qualtes our chldren and youth need n order to meet lfe's later demands; yet we neglect to develop these trats because we are so busy. As soon as chldren can read, ntroduce them to good books and magaznes. Ths wll take more tme, for you wll have to read the books and magaznes yourself to fnd out whch are good and whch are not. Remember that one bad book or comc can poson a chld's mnd for lfe. Keep a strong control on readng matter that comes nto your home. Ths s not an easy task. Then explan why some thngs are good and others are bad. As parents t s our duty to teach our chldren how to be alone and have fun readng. Keep control of the knob on the TV. As dvnely appont.ed leaders of the home parents have the rght and the duty to decde on the knd of programs the chldren shall look at. Help them to lsten to good musc, to do thngs wth ther hands, to soak n the beauty of a sunset or a song of a brd. f you do ths, n later years when there s no grown-up around to tell them, they wll make the rght choces. Settng an Example n her home a mother can do the two thngs whch are most lkely to safeguard young people from formng the drnk habt. She can set an example and establsh an deal. Young adults and teenagers who enjoy, the gracous hosptalty of the abstanng mother recognze that there s no truth n the oft-repeated propaganda that alcoholc beverages ncrease the zest and glamor of socal occasons. n recent surveys of the atttudes of hgh school students toward alcoholc beverages, the effect of the example set n the home s clearly rebected n the standard observed by the young people. So make home the central attracton; plan thngs to make the young folks happy. Take tme to show nterest n them; make them feel they arc wanted; and let them know you love them. Tell them to nvte ther frends - at proper tmes of course. Above all, read to them. There s no sound' lke mother's voce. The result of all of ths wll be that chldren wll look upon the home as the most beautful place n the world. More than ever we must try to nculcate n the younger generaton the desre and determnaton to carryon the way of lfe revered by our poneer mothers and fathers, whch forces n devous ways are seekng to undermne. n accomplshng ths, our small towns and ctes - along wth our churches and homes - are our chef hope for our young people. ~@f1'~ ~~ ~@mlp b\.-'1dllles ]~59 By Janet VanHorn Eghteen Seventh Day Baptst youth, each of them bubblng over wth exctment and antcpaton, arrved at Chemn A-H'aut State Park n northern Lousana on June 15, for the 13th Southwestern Assocaton Camp MLES. Smth, professor of Englsh Bble at Fuller Theologcal Semnary, was featured on the cover of the May Unt~d ]Evangelcal Acton magazne standng n the mdst of the stacks of hs personal theologcal lbrary of 24,000 volumes whch supplements the larger semnary lbrary. Dr. Smth dscourages students from tryng to buld up unusually large lbrares although he becomes almost ecstatc over a long-sought book whch states some element of Chrstan truth better than anythng else n hs great lbrary. To apprecate large numbers of books one needs a lttle of the readng power of Dr. 14 Smth whch s almost unequalled. Many of the books from Wlbur Smth's pen (and there are usually two or three a year) are hghly przed. He says he has such a large lbrary n ord'er to have materal avalable for Peloubet's Notes. New Bble nsttute n Germany The Greater Europe Msson s probably not very well known to readers of ths perodcal.,t s one of those fath mssons, nterdenomnatonal n appeal, whch appears to throb wth lfe and zeal. t has work n a number of European countres and s now rejocng n the opportunty to start the German Bble nsttute wth sutable property. The u.s. address of Greater Europe Msson s 650 South Clark St., Chcago 5, ll. t has Bble nsttutes n several countres, one of the best establshed beng the Europe~n Bble nsttute of France - well known to a number of Seventh Day Baptsts who have vsted t or have met some of ts faculty. Seventh-day Adventsts us~d ths dea for many years and bult up a great worldwde work. Now, however, they are stressng the tranng of mnsters and mantanng pad pastors n most local churches. Who s tjlnkng the matter through more deady, the bshop who has been accustomed to perhaps too much emphass on the prestly functon of a pastor or the Adventsts who have through most of ther hstory depended largely on unpad local leadershp? Whch s more up to date? Or s t a queston of reacton and faraway pastures lookng greener? What lessons, f any, are there for Seventh Day Baptsts? ][f You Stck Out Your Tongue Wth her arms around her father's neck, Mary was speakng words of endearment to hm. But her mother notced that over her father's shoulder she was stckng out her tongue at her brother Tom. The mother sad, "Take your arms down from your father's neck, Mary; your father loves Tom as much as he loves you, and you can't stck out your tongue at your brother and love your father." When you hud your curses, by word or deed, at those of ~~~--~----~--~----~ ~..) another race or class, you must take your arms from around the neck of God. - Lous H. Evans n Make Your Fath 'VVork (The Flemng H. Revell Company). ~~W$!r~ h'-a UC=3~ <C~U~CC:~ES DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. - The Rev. Rhodes Thompson of the Frst Chrstan Church of Da1tona Beach s supplyng our pulpt at present. At a recent church meetng t was voted to hold no church servces from August 8 to September 12 whle Mr. Thompson s on vacaton. The Church Ad Socety held two meetngs n June, the frst one to plan ther summer work and the second one to begn work on ther poster and banner for Conference. They also cut out and dd some sewng on blankets and nghtes for nfants, a Wodd Communty Day Project whch should be completed by November frst. They plan to meet durng July to contnue ths work. Our church address s 145 Frst Avenue, Daytona Beach, Florda. Those vstng Florda are cordally nvted to worshp wth us. We mss our frends who return north durng the summer season, but those lvng here the year around are fathful n ther attendance at the servces. - Correspondent. DENVER, COLO. - We n the Denver Church are happy to make a progress report on the work here. On Sabbath, June 27, our regular church servce was held outdoors at our new buldng ste. Pastor Kenneth Smth spoke on the theme, "Ths s Holy Ground." Followng a pcnc dnner, an mpressve servce of dedcaton of the parsonage and the church buldng ste was held. Greetngs were extended by the Rev. Maurce Palmqust, presdent of Lakewood Mnsteral Assocaton, and by Oz Black, extenson drector of the Denver Councl of Churches. Dr. Ero E. Sutton of Boulder, a former pastor here, spoke brefly of the begnnngs and progress of the Denver Church, and commended the congregaton for takng ths great step forward.
