The Norse called t Easter, a festval of sprng, a sea' son of rebrth. When Ea~ter came the hearth fres wer~ lghted anew, and Easter bonfres were lghted upon the hlltops, for the Norsemen beleved that the po"vers of evl were scattered as far as the Easter fres cast ther lght. The Hebrews called t Pascha, ""the passng over H of Hebrew homes when the frst' born of the E~yp' tans were smtten. and devoutly observed the Feast of the' Passover to the tme of Chrst. All over the world festvals of sprng closely, resemble each other. Ths shows a common nclnaton on the part of man to worshp, to reverence, to seek a dvne power n hs unverse. Ths joy n the return of sprngtme, and ths natural nclnaton to worshp, take on a dfferent meanng when consdered n the lght of the Resurrecton, wth ts elements of hope and nspraton. Chrst, n the Resurrec' ton, has brought together the two streams of thnkng-the blnd searchng after a god of the pagan, and the paschal thanks' gvng of the ~ehrew~. He s ""the Lamb that was slan." He removed all doubt concernng the plan of the Creator for the created. He demonstrated to Hs followers forever the realty of eternal lfe. No longer do men need to grope blndly to fnd the true God. The fact that we cannot defne them,. makes the mpressons none the less real. But why should ths seem strange? The most real experences. of our nner lfe are always ndefnable. We may be as certan of the c.omng mmortal lfe as we are of the approach of sprng~ and the fact that we cannot explan t n words should, count nothng aganst the realty. s s smply because we lve close to n,ature"s heart that we almost mper' ceptbly catch premontons of the comng s!,rng,even before the more tangble Sgns appear; a.nd why should not the soul that lves close to the heart of nature s God have premontons of lfe"s eternal sprng? He had a Bble n one hand and a wooden cross n the other. He preached the message of the crclss to all who would hear. He told the people that the cross n hs hand was only a symbol of the cross on. whch Jesus ded to save them from ther sns. Ths same man was brought before the court and, have heard, cast nto prson, for preachng n publc places wthout' a permt. He at.. tended the servce at o ur chapel on sev" eral occasons. talked to hm, but found no fault wth hm. although many seem to ~nd much fault n what they term hs stupd method of wtnessng for Chrst. Now, my readers, am qute sure that f we take the cross of Chrst n anythng lke a lteral way we suffer persecutonthe message of the cross s no more popu" lar today than t was n St. Paurs day. The Cross and ts Clams have never felt called to preach n the streets, bearng a wooden cross n my hand, but have felt led to bear wtness td the very lteral meanng of Chrst's words: Hf a.ny man cometh unto me, and hateth not hs own father... mother... wfe... chldren... hrethren... ssters, yea, and hs own lfe also, he cannot be my d$cple.... Whosoever he be of you that renounceth not all that he hath, he cannot be my dscple." The frst took place at the ntersemnary conventon at New Brunswck, N. J. When each school was called upon to name a representatve to speak for ts group, was made the spokesman for our semnary because happened to be' the senor member. Among other thngs spoke of the Sabbath. After that the other boys knew where we stood, and t opened the way for prvate conversatons. Was the new understandng worth more tha n the cost of the tr p? On another occason was at a meet' ng of the Allegany County Mnsters' Assocaton at Belmont, N. Y. Our speak' er was a Catholc prest who was to speak about the holy days of the calendar year, but \'vho spent most of hs tme changng the day from Sabbath to Sunday. Durng the dscusson perod had an oppor' tuntv to speak, and spoke out boldly n behalf of the Sabbath, trac?g t from Geness through the lfe of Jesus and the early Church. Almost thou persuadest me to be a Seventh Day Baptst. n My reply was, HNot only thee, but all thy brethren. n dd not make a Sabbath convert there that day, bu.t maybe dd somethng more n ths world of strfe. That mnster seems to have learned tolerance, and now we work together as brothers. The thrd ncdent took place only a few weeks ago on February 8 at the Ale' gany County Youth Rally~at Cuba, N. Y. After the group dscussons, representa' tves of the varous dvsons brought ther fndngs before the entre assembly of more than 150 teen' age youth of dfferent denomnatons. The group on 44What Do Y au Bel~ve?" presented ts fndngs, and someone asked. HWhy do the people at Alfred go 'to Church on Saturday?" For some reason the charman asked me to speak on tls pont, whch gladly dd before ths' mxed assembly. am thank, ful that Seventh Day Baptsts were. represented, for who else hut one of our group would have spoken n behalf of the holy Sabbath? What,"vonderful opportuntes we may have to wtness for Chrst and the Sabbath f we are wllng to make the effort to get to these meetngs. God has no one to speak f Hs spokesmen are not there. n ths world of turmol t 'behooves all the rghteous forces -to work together. n ths age of ndfference the world needs the holy Sabbath of God. FNANCAL PROBLEMS Dear Edtor: For some tme some of the fnancal problems connected wth publshng the Sabbath Recorder have been a source of deep concern to many of ts frends. At the last sesson of Conference. we were nformed that whle the subscrpton prce remans at $2.50, the actual cost of prnt... ng was 'somethng over $8. Costs have, / 1..l rsen snce that tme. Accordng to the 1947 Year Book, the cost of prntng the Recorder was approxmately three tmes the recepts. Ths stuaton remnds one of the story of the old woman who kept a store, and was n the habt of sayng that the prces on the artcles she sold were below cost. \\,'hen someone rem:trked that he couldn't see how she could do busness that way, she repled that she couldn't f she ddrl~t do a lot of t. Whle our Re' corder stuaton s not exactly parallel, t s true that there would be consderably less loss f the subscrpton lst were-appre' cably extended. Everyone kno,vs that the frst copy to be prnted costs the most money; after that the cost decreases for a consderable number of copes. From the report as gven n the Year Book, t mght well be assumed that per' haps one thrd of our number are readers of the paper. f ths s true, then theo' retcally, at least, the crculaton of the Recorder ought to be three tmes what t s today,' for every good Seventh Day Baptst ought to be ~reader. TWO NEW SABBATH SCHOOLS A new Sabbath school was organzed at Metare~ La., near New Orleans, n Au' gust, The superntendent.s Mrs. Earl DeLand. There are about seventeen to twenty people attendng each week. Mr. Gerald Coalwell and Mr. Earl De' Land have been advertsng the denom.. naton and ts belefs n a New Orleans daly paper. They have receved about thrteen letters n response from people outsde of the denomnaton. These let' ters have all been answered jncludng tracts regardng the Sabbath and the de' nomnaton. One of these people has been attendng the Sabbath school regularly. From the nerest whch has been man' fested. t s expected that others wll come nto the group.
