1 WNTER PARK TOPCS A Weekly Revew of Socal and Cultural Durng the Wnter Resort Season Actvtes Vol. 9 No. 3 Wnter Park, Florda, Frday, March 27, 942 Prce 0 Cents NEW EXHBTON AT RESEARCH STUDO On Sunday afternoon a new exhbton opens at the Research Studo n Matland. t s a three-part dsplay consstng- of the hghly colorful and decoratve pantngs of Howard Schleeter, the pleasantly orderly cement sculpture by Clfton Adams and a seres of "cyeloromantes" (a combnaton of pantng and stage model) by the untrng expernentor, Andre Smth. Referrng to Schleeter's work, Mr. Smth says n a foreword to the exhbton: "Weary crtcs, prognostcators of art movements and clusters of mnor prophets have long ago declared Abstract Art, n all ts manfestatons, a bured experment. And yet n the face of ther combned funeral oratory t stll moves along brskly as ever and constantly wnnng- followers among artsts as well as art lovers. "The work of Howard Schleeter s n the front of ths healthy movement whch allows the panter the same freedom n pant as muscal notes allow a composer, that s, not an mtaton of nature, nor an mpresson of nature, but a personal nterpretaton of t by means of form, color and space. Add to hs pantngs ther textural enrchment (not. unlke a woven fabrc) a Schleeter pantng becomes almost a thng n tself, a fabrcaton that, back of ts creator's concept, has a basc foundaton n earthborn realty. "All ths may sound a bt wordy, but not more so than any attempt at an explanaton n verbal terms of a manfestaton whch, after all, asks of us only a vsual reacton through our personal nterpretaton, Howard Schleeter's pantngs must be seen n order to be apprecated. And by seeng mean that deeper sense of vsual understandng whch, regardless of surface qualtes of pant and pattern, gves us the sprt of Truth wthout whch no work of art s worth a moment's consderaton." The New Buldng of All Sants P. E. Church Photo by Pago. ALL SANTS NEW CHURCH BULDNG TO BE OPENED FOR SERVCES ON PALM SUNDAY All Wnter Park wll jon n congratulatons to the congregaton of buldng had become very apparent gaton, The nadequacy of the old All Sants Protestant Epscopal n 938, and the vst to Wnter Church next Sunday when ther Park of the noted ecclesastcal archtect, Ralph Adams Cram, durng new church buldng wll be opened for ts frst servce. To many who mssed the passng of the old buldng whch had for so long graced ths corner of nterlachen and Lyman Avenues, the gradual dsclosure of the smple but beautful outlnes of the new church was as nterestng as the unfoldng of a flower. The new All Sants gves an mpresson of quet and hallowed dgnty, yet frendly and nvtng, a wholly approprate and nsprng sanctuary. (Contnued on Page 2) A SUNDAY AFTERNOON AT HUNGERFORD What Hungerford Gves ts Students March 25, 942. Edtor, Wnter Park Topcs. Sr: My nterest n the Hungerford School s based on the type of educaton t gves. Vocatonal educaton. t does not teach colored boys and grls to use long words and to ape lterary folks. t teaches them how to work wth ther hands n ktchen, feld and shop, to do a good job and earn both money and happness. t follows the example of Tuskegee, the famous school establshed and run for many years by the great leader of colored democracy, Mr. Booker Washngton. He taught by voce and example that the colored boy or grl who could cultvate a crop, cook a meal; mend a plough, shoe a horse better than a whte man won a poston not only of equalty, but of superorty. That's the way to rase both self and race. And that's the way of Hungerford Ẏours truly, JOHN MARTN. The above bref trbute to Hungerford School by Dr. John Martn may ncrease the nterest of Wnter Parkans n a hghly valuable nsttuton. Too many of us have been vaguely conscous, the wrter among them, of an excellent school for negroes somewhere n the vcnty whch came to.notce frequently durng the wnter season because of ts sng-ers and the mld requests for fnancal ad whch were sent around. There were promnent ctzens on ts Advsory- Board, f you took the trouble to look over the lst, and ts appeals for mantenance funds were not carelessly turned asde. But the fact s that Wnter Park has so many nterests, that Hung-erford has not been counted very much wth many people who should be strong supporters and workers for ts success. At the urgent nvtaton of Mr. Wllam F. Pelham, whose enthusasm for other good works as well as Hungerford, stamps hm as a mltant, constructve Amercan, attended the Sunday afternoon concert at the school, had heard on varous occasons a quartet of the young men students sng ther amusng: "States Song" "What dd Dela-wear" and "Where Dd Mary-land", etc. Ther efforts, whle entertanng-, were no preparaton for the program of sprtuals sungby the whole group of men and women students, Led by ther Drectress. Mrs, L. B. Hall, wfe of the prncpal, Mr. John E. Hall, ths body of some 40 women and men sang tradtonal sprtuals wth a beauty of tone and a natural, unaffected devoton that t has seldom been my good fortune to hear surpassed. The voces had a mellow, sweet qualty, free from forcng, and there was an effortless balancng of the four parts that produced a sngularly spontaneous rse and fall of muscal tone. Hs frst symphony was played at a concert of the Royal Phlharmonc Socety n 909, Arthur Nksch conductng. The story of hs career snce these debuts as composer, panst and conductor has been one of cumulatve success n all three, and when he made hs Amercan debut n 909, he already occuped the very dstngushed poston he holds today n the musc world. 4 Page Four MRS. BLOCH'8S THRLLER STRS LOCAL NTEREST By WYNDHAM HAYWARD "The Bach Festval Murders": mystery novel by Blanche Bloch; Harper & Bros., 942, 289 p., $2.00. There s a large and voracous segment of the Amercan readng publc whch has taken the modern "mystery thrller" novel to ts heart. Mostly they are murder mysteres. Frankly we don't lke most murder mysteres, outsde of a few of the better efforts of Agatha Chrste, S. S. Van Dyne, etc., and so Mrs. Bloch wll probably say we have no busness revewng her new book. But n Wnter Park we try to keep abreast of sgnflcent trends n all the arts, and when Mrs. Blanche Bloch wrtes a mystery novel, t s somethng else agan. The dust wrapper of her new book s mldly frghtenng, wth ts llustraton and the blurb lne "a lvely and entertanng tale of murder and mystery". f we dd not know the author, and had not seen the book develop conscentously and panstakngly over many months, we would never have read t, probably. But better crtcs than we can ever hope to be have called t "tops" n mystery novel entertanment, so f you want the best n that sort of thng, we recommend t unreservedly. The book has a specal nterest for Central Florda readers, as Mrs. Bloch has borrowed a stuaton for the muscal settng of her story fantly remnscent of our own Wnter Park, wth rval factons of symphony orchestra proponents and Bach Festval advocates competng for popular attenton. The locale -s a Texas ol town; and the-varous characters are expertly drawn and the acton cleverly handled. Knowng Mrs. Bloch as we do, we can say that any effort to see a "roman a clef" n her book s a rank perverson of the facts, and a delberate msunderstandng of her talents. As we sad, when Mrs. Alexander Bloch, wfe of the conductor of the Central Florda Symphony orchestra, wrtes a mystery novel, that s somethng else ag-an. Most mystery novels n recent years that we have read have seemed ratter dull, WNTEE PARK TOPCS, FRDAY, MARCH 27, 942 lackng n the refnements of style, plot and characterzaton that make for good wrtng. However, as mght be expected, Mrs. Bloch's mystery novel s ntellgent, sparklng, clever, wtty and sophstcated. We hope t wll have a far wder audence than the ranks of '"mystery fans" alone. Mrs. Bloch knows how to wrte, her style s charmng, her management of stuatons deft, and above all, of course she knows and loves her musc. So whle we mght wsh she had put the same effort nto a more delcate and romantc creaton of young love and musc, we are happy, nevertheless, that our Wnter Park authoress has done somethng to reflect surpassng credt on herself and the Amercan mystery novel. And we hope her next book, whch already we antcpate wth eager expectaton, wll not be a "muscal murder mystery", because to us, murder and musc don't mx. We lke to feel that muscans do not resort to such extremes to settle ther dfferences. The bull fddle player may crack down on the pccolo player's head wth hs bass vol, and Beethoven, Bach and Brahms sometmes take consderable punshment at the hands of well-meanng players, but more than that we wll not concede. Lastly but not leastly, may we quote from Deems t Taylor, dean of Amercan musc crtcs, who sad n a recent commentary on Mrs. Bloch's frst novel, "Blanche Bloch's book s not only a swell mystery and a well wrtten one, but a book about muscans by someone who reallv knows what muscans are lke." Whch puts me n my place. A TRBUTE TO DELUS CHAMBER MUSC GROUP On Saturday evenng, the 4th, came the last concert for the season, of the Delus Chamber Musc Group. These delghtful concerts have already met a long felt want, and we are all proud of "our boys" for the fne muscanly renderng of such dffcult compostons. Bshop Whpple of the Docese of Mnnesota began to be a wnter resdent of Matland about 876. He conducted servces at the nn and soon after" bult the present beautful lttle church as a memoral to hs son. Ten years later the old Semnole Hotel was bult n Wnter Park and brought a number of Epscopalans as wnter guests. n that day of slow transportaton over sand roads by superanuated Florda horses the dstance of three mles to Matland was consdered far too nconvenent. Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Stovn of Wnter Park had been attendants, the latter the organst of the Church of the 'Jood Shepherd. They were the frst members of the new congregaton of All Sants. For a number of years the two mssons of the Good Shepherd, Matland, and All Sants, Wnter. Park, were under the charge of the same clergyman. Each had ts own rectory, whch t desred to have occuped by the mnster-n-charge. Ths led to a degree of argument whch made t seem wse for each church to have ts own resdent mnster. All Sants contnued as a msson from 886 to 924., Then t became a parsh church under the rectorshp of ts frst rector, Rev. James B. Thomas. Ph.D., now retred and lvng n Wnter Park. He came to be-n charge of the msson, October, 923, and the frst servces as a Parsh were held on May 8, 924. 6 Page Sx A SUNDAY AFTERNOON (Contnued from Page ) were sung, not reached, for, as s so often the dstressng habt n amateur chors; the lower and mddle regster of the basses had a sort of a mahogany rchness that remnded me of deep bells struck gently. There was no need of stranng the ear for the words. There was a very affectng' emotonal expresson but never lackng n dgnty and reverence. Ths was sngng that would move people and refresh ther sprts. t had nothng to fear from comparson wth any of the chors of wdely heralded rado and concert fame. "Whatever else Hungerford mght have, there was no queston, n my mnd, that Hungerford has MUSC. After the concert, a trp around the school grounds and buldngs provded food for reflecton. These classrooms were scrupuously clean but ther equpment, to say the least, seemed scanty. Perhaps chars are not an essental part of educaton, but a few more of them at Hungerf ord would not be luxury. Perhaps some of our Wnter Park housekeepers would be glad to send spare artcles of furnture. However, t would be much wser and more constructve to vst Hungerford and hear the musc and then make up one's mnd what to do. As t was Sunday, there was no opportunty for me to see the school n operaton, and for ths reason t seemed that the educatonal work of the nsttuton should be brefly descrbed by one of ts supporters hence the letter by Dr. HEALTH * STUDO Freshly Pressed Vegetable Juces From 0 A.M. to 5 P.M. SALADS A SPECALTY Vst us at our New Locaton 664 OSCEOLA AVE. Tel. 642 WNTER PARK TOPCS, FRDAY,. MARCH 27, 942 Martn at the head of ths story. t seems apparent that Hungerford possesses two of the fundamental values as a school: frst, t has n ts musc an art that would command respect wherever t s heard: second, t represents the prncpal of self-help. Wth these two sound assets t only needs to have ts musc heard and ts story told to get the fnancal help whch t needs. C. F. H. MR. BLOCH PRESENTS DELGHTFUL PROGRAM t was certanly no calamty for Alexander Bloch to have a dmnshed personnel under hs baton last Tuesday evenng for the last of the season's concerts of the Symphony Orchestra. He provded an apprecatve and enthusastc audence a most enjoyable and stmulatng concert. Whle the absence of the brass and other nstruments whch enrch the tonal color mght n tme be yearned for, there was no thought of any lack n the qualty and effectveness of the strng orchestra n ths program. Startng wth a perfect example of Mozart's work, the "Symphony Concertante for voln, vola and orchestra" wth Walter Trampler and Dante Bergonz as solosts, we enjoyed the quntessence of classcal elegance, superbly performed by both solosts and orchestra. Followng the cerulean clarty of Mozart we were served wth some heady wne n the nature of a recklessly brewed "Snf onetta, frst movement" by Ncolas Maskovsky. The themes were rather obstnately sent upon ther way on dfferent levels whch tended to meet wthout the slghtest annoyance, however, and one rejoced to hear how lttle damage was done. f Mr. : Bloch thought le was gvng Wnter Park a rather dffcult test, let hm now rest assured that we can take t and lke t. And we thank hm for gvng us the thrll of such provocatve composton. Lekeu's "Adago for Strngs" proved a work of exquste beauty wth fnely magnatve essays nto htherto lttle known realms. Arnold Kvam and Walter Trampler enrched the work wth exqustely played ncdental solos. The program closed wth Wolf-Ferrar's "Serenade", a. pleasng but rather superfcal work. Ths concert seemed to ths revewer to provde unanswerable argument for the permanence of our Symphony Orchestra, and Mr. Bloch well merted the spontaneous and sound approval of the audence.
