ThejBfpnrtrty Garage n CarUret and the Ralto Garage just over the borough lne n Woodbrdge terrtory, were robbed some tme Saturday nght, presumably by the same gang. n the Ralto a cash regster valued at $325 was runed but the theves secured no loot. The cash regster n the Economy Garage was robbed of J20 n cash and a few res were taken. Evdence left n he latter garage ndcated that the gang ntended to steal a Chrysler ar but were baffled by a bolt whch >l< one of the man doors. AlthOSgh there s a bg arc lght n front of the Economy Garage the heves worked boldly, breakng the ocks on the bg doors to the garage nd the smaller door leadng to the jfflce. After openng the two street doors they broke open an nner door between the garage fnd the offce. The fact that the Economy Garage had been broken nto was dscovered by a drver on the Carteret-Rahway bus lne at 5 A. M. Sunday. He notced that the two street doors were open and called up the owners of the garage, Davd Wohlgemuth and hs son, Alfred. The crcumstance of the two street doers beng forced leads the polce to beleve that a gang of theves was workng. The cash regster n the Economy was not broken open but the one n the Ralto Garage was broken although t was not locked Ths has gven rse to a theory that the Ralto was vsted frst and that the theves became famlar wth the workngs of a cash regster there. The Ralto Garage, owned by Jo- Beph Catr, was entered by breakng all the glass out of a wndow on the sde of the buldng. The theves carred the heavy cash regster to the wndow and threw t out. Then they carred t some dstance back n the felds n the rear of the garage where they pred the drawer open. The cash regster was badly damaged. No tools, accessores or other property was taken from the Ralto. As t s located just over the borough lne at Edwn street, the case was reported to the polce of Woodbrdge. Because no accurate lst of the stock of tres n' the Economy Garage was kept the propretors were unable to say just how^nany tres were stolen but are sure that some are mssng. Kng PERTH AMBOY ANOTHER CROSSNG ACCDENT At the rsk of beng branded tresome we feel mpelled to agan refer to the grade crossng danger. Lart week we commended the acton of Woodbrdge Post No. 87 n adoptng a resoluton urgng the Pennsylvana Ralroad Company to nstall a more adequate sgnal system at the Man street crossng of that ralroad. Snce that tme a serous accdent occurred at the Port Readng Crossng of the Central Ralroad. The sgnal system of the Central Ralroad at Port Readng s much superor to that of the Pennsylvana Ralroad Company at Man street. But t lacks one essental: there s no fed lght to warn drvers at nght of the approach of trans. A block away at the crossng of Turtle Brook road there s one of these red lght sgnals and we do not recall an accdent at that crossng snce the sgnal was nstalled. These red lghts arranged so that a seres of bulbs are lghted n rotaton gvng the effect of a swngng red lantern, are n our estmaton, the most effectve nght-sgnals that have yet been devsed. They are automatc and are so perfected that they seldom get out of order. Such a sgnal at Port Readng would have averted the accdent Monday nght. That accdent mght well have taken a toll of human lfe. t was by the merest chance that the drver and hs companon eeaped by leapng just before ther truck, was ht, Had the truck been a few nches further onto the track t mght easly have been tossed along the platform of the staton and mght have klled or njured persons standng there. The rsk s so great that even- possble means of warnng drvers should be employed. ONE-SXTH OF OUR TME USED TO PAY TAXES Whle, n the majorty of busnesses, the tax bll s one of the greatest sngle tems of overhead, busness men gve far less thought and consderaton to ths expense than to other, and often smaller, expendtures whch they control drectly. Accordng to an artcle n the Tax Dgest, approxmately^ one-sxth of our natonal ncome goes to pay the cost of government. Three years ago, n 1925, on-eghth of our natonal ncome was used for ths purpose. And before the war taxes took but one-sxteenth. Governmental actvtes and mantenance n general are becomng steadly more expensve wth lttle sgn of mprovement. n spte of federal economes, the costs of state, c^tnty and cty governments have so ncreased that the average ctzen s carryng a greater burden than ever before. The busness man should realze that one-sxth of hs workng tme belongs to the tax collector under exstng condtons, Every sxth automoble, every sxth klowatt of electrcty, every sxth bushel of wheat produced goes to the tax offce. f we are to have reducton, we must have publc nterest that examnes^and controls expendtures. A lax publc conscousness results n poltcal extravagance and waste that must leave ts mark on personal and general prosperty"."*"* BULD WDER HGHWAYS The trend n hghway buldng s toward wder pavements n all centers and terrtores where traffc s apt to be heavy and congested. The Amercan Automoble Assocaton has apponted a commttee wth the object of furtherng ths plan, usng the slogan that "Wder Hghways are Safer Hghways." Under exstng condtons, trucks and other slow-movng vehcles on hghways delay many mles of cars capable of greater speed, that are unable to pass because of the narrow roadways. The fact that a car wshng ^c pass must'turn out nto the path of oncomng vehcles s the cajuse of a large proporton of Berous and fatal motor accdents. Ths s a condton that s beng changed n many progressve localtes. THE STORY OF THE SULLVAN LAW., t./ _ The New York Sullvan Law whch makes carryng a concealed weapon wthout a permt a pententary offense, s often held up as a model by crme reformers who advocate the enactment of smlar laws throughout the naton. n speakng of ths, Justce Strong, of jbrooklyn, recently Bad that "the hstory of the so-called Sullvan law s one of nterest. The law was frst enacted at the request of one Sullvan n order to protect hs gangs aganst the nroads of other gangs nfestng the East Sde of New York, so that Sullvan's gangsters could obtan permts, whle the rval gangsters coud not. Ever snce the enactment of ths law gangsters have all had pstols, ether wth or wthout permts, many of them ob- 'tanng permts through ether poltcal pull or decet. Whle the gangster s evadng or volatng the law the householder and average ctzen has been left unprotected, largely because the obtanng of & permt by hm has been surrounded wth annoyance and red tape." All laws whch have attempted to reduce crme by passng general restrctons on the Bale of weapons, have borne smlar results. Effcent crmnal organzatons would have no trouble n provdng ther members wth smuggled guns, even f other sources falftd. To the crmnal "pstol" laws j.re whfch assure hjm unprotected, unarmed prospects r NO DANGER OF OL SHORTAGE There? enough gasolne n the world to la* at least l?.00 vears, sad Dr. Gustave Egloff, a Chcago scentst, recently. Dr. Eglnff stated that there are today 1,100,000,000 acreof possble ol lands n the Unted States alone. The potental ol areas n other parts of the world are suffcent to product over 100,000,000,000 barrels of crude ol. The "crackng" process, whch s beng used to produce more than 5,000,000 gallons of gasolne yearly from petroleum ols, could be used on present by-products and ol shales, as well, to ncrease the amount of gasolne producton when necessary. Another encouragng sgn s the determned effort beng made by the ndustry to conserve ol resources and curb overproducton. Co-operaton among producers ':!! : :,z a supply that wll meet adequately the demand at a stable prce. Those who crtcze use of our natural resources on the ground that they wll be quckly exhausted, have no support n the scentfc facts.
