On Hottest Nghts Odor of Burnng Rubber," Cause Fumes and odors of a most objectonable type alleged to come from the plant of Tyson Brothers, n Edgar Hll, are makng lfe mserable for resdents there, especally at nght, accordng to statements made by some of them. The'warm nghts of the-past week have brought the stuaton near the breakng pont, t s sad. The odors are more pungent and dstressng as the heat ncreases, partcularly f t s heat accompaned by dampness or the condton known as humdty. At such tmes people must have ther bedroom wndows open wde n order to sleep wth any comfort at all. But t s alleged by the Edgar Hll folk, t s_at just such tmes that the odors become so unbearable that the wndows have to be closed tghtly. On Sunday nght the fumes and vapors wth the accompanyng odor arsng from the plant, spread over the neghborhood n a heavy mst or fog. Homes all about the dstrct were nvaded by the heavy, malodorous vapors. A sort of ndgnaton meetng was held n the vcnty of the ralroad'staton where resdents of Freeman street, Prospect avenue and, Rdgedale- avenue and other streets n the dstrct gathered and voced protest. From a vantage pont near the staton the vapors could be seen arsng from the plant and spreadng over the adjonng terrtory. The Tyson concern manufactures rubber substtutes but the smells that arse from the plant, t s sad, are not substtutes but the genune smell of burnng rubber an odor that for offensve qualty compares wth the best efforts of the skunk. There was a general demand for acton of ta concerted nature on Sunday nght, t s understood, and some of the leaders of the dstrct are sad to have' a plan n mnd. These leaders were not dsposed to reveal what jplan, f any, s under consderaton. The relef, they clam, should come from the Townshp commttee or Board of Health. It s contended that the publc s enttled to fresh, pure ar and that any-ndustry that flls the ar wth offensve odors s mantanng a nusance. I Servce of Owners Assocaton Satsfactory and Ther Outlay Heavy Competton Would Be Unfar Although there have been several applcatons fled wth the townshp commttee for permts to. operate new bus lnes through Woodbrdge, t s not lkely that any new lne "wll be opened n the near future. One of the recent applcatons was tljt of Peter Rosenvnge, of Metuchen, who proposed to operate att express bus lke between Perth Amboy and Rahway wth local stops n Woodbrdge and Rahway but none ff Perth Amboy. Ths applcaton s now n the hands of a commttee and, t s learned, t s lkely to stay there wth several others. One reason why the applcatons for permts for new lnes wll le dormant s that the present Bus Owners' Assocaton, operatng the exstng lnes through the townshp, s gvng good servce. The busses run on tme; there have been no complants lately of dscourteous treatment of passengers, and the busses now n operaton are all practcally new and much more comfortable and safe than the ones that used to furnsh transportaton here. The mprovements n servce and n new busses represent a heavy nvestment upon the part of the owners and t s consdered only far to them a chance to reap some of the benefts of ther nvestment wthout, undue, competton. In other words the bus owners have kept fath wth the offcals and now the offcals feel that they are enttled to some protecton. There s also a dsposton to keep just as many busses on the roads as are necessary to handle the traffc and no more, especally at a tme when the detours, caused by road repars, are developng a consderable traffc problem n the townshp streets. c, ale /s Presbyteran Church Granted Free Use of. Gve Steerng Gear and Brakes Rght Attenton There are two elements of every motor car upon the perfect operaton of whch vtally depends the lves and { lmbs of the passengers. These are the steerng gear and the brakes. The engne may "go dead," the gears strp, or mportant parts of the mechansm may break, wth not more serous result than, delay, nconvenence and a repar bll; but when the steerng gear fals, an accdent of a more or less serous character usually takes place, explans an expert. It s thus obvously advsable, as a reasonable precauton, frequently to nspect all parts of the steerng gear wth the utmost thoroughness In order to forestall derangements. All steerng gears are very much alke, and consst of these parts:.the steerng column and steerng devce, usually located at ts lower end under the hood, wth ts crank extendng down under the car; the drag-lnk, whch connects the steerng crank wth the knuckle of one or the other of the front wheels; the parallel rod, whch connects the knuckles of the two front wheels and the pvoted knuckles of the two wheels wth ther spndles and pna. In a general way the nspecton of a steerng gear conssts n assurng oneself that the fastenng devces connectng these parts are all perfectly secure and that there s no undue looseness or lost moton n any oj jh«jonts, or, elsewhere n the system. [They are for Studebaker cars dentcal wth those whch have been n tremendous demand at hgher prces durng the past eleven months. -They are for Studebaker cars so well bult of such hgh qualty materals that net profts durng the past sx months have averaged only $ per car. The rest.of the money the publc- pad us ;went nto makng a car wth scores of thousands of mles of excess transportaton. These earnngs are a trumph for the one-proft bass of manufacture. No manufacturer on a less (effcent bass could have made a dollar sellng cars of Studebaker qualty at Studebaker prces. Studebaker s the only one-proft car n the fne car feld. Only Ford and Studebaker make for all ther cars all bodes, all engnes, ol gear sets, clutches, sprngs, dfferentals, axles, steerng gears, gray ron castngs and drop /orgngs. Thus we save and pass on to purchasers profts whch many other manufacturers must.pay to outsde parts and body makers. No "yearly models" makes sales jump Thus we were able last January to reduce prces already low. Then we announced that Studebaker would have no more "yearly models" to artfcally deprecate cars n the hands of owners. Sales nstantly started to soar and have forced the vast Studebaker plants to mantan peak producton throughout the summer, n the face of declnng producton for the ndustry n general. To one-proft savngs we thus add savngs due to long contnued peak producton. These savngs we share wth customers n the prce reducton announced August 1st. We stll use genune leather, mohar upholstery, fne ndrthern whte ash and hard maple, tough extra gauge steel for whch we pay premums, plate glass, walnut nlad wth holly and other refnements. In short, these are the same fne cars n every partcular only the prce has been reduced. You can't apprecate what a bargan Studebaker cars are at these new prces untl you compare them pont by pont wth others. Remember that Studebaker cars have been kept constantly up to date. Improvements have been made as soon as developed not saved up for spectacular announcements under the guse of "new yearly models" desgned to deprecate cars. already n the hands of owners. Superortes both hdden and obvous Many of the most mportant superortes of Studeba'kers are hdden untl revealed by thousands of mles of usage, but here are some you can check to prove our statement that every Studebaker s more up to date than the newest "yearly model." It s demonstrated daly n the larger ctes that proper control and supervson of traffc has resulted n fewer accdents. Elmnaton of lefthand turns, segregaton of street traffc, pedestran control, traffc offcers, synchronzed traffc lghts, and. numerous other devces haye been nvented to lessen the hazards to lfe and lmb. Busy streets where traffc s thus controlled have much fewer accdents, In proporton to the number of vehcles and pedestrans, than uncontrolled streets have. * Traffc-Control Problem. A feature of the traffc-control problem s the ncreasng mportance of mechancally ^operated control. The traffc offcer ft becomng a huge burden of expense to the larger ctes. In the congested dstrcts there are sometmes as many as four or more offcer; on each of two or three shfts supervsng the traffc at one ntersecton. SMITH Threatenng WNU Servce DERHAPS I had slept an hour on ^ the desert when the uproar started. I sat up suddenly n the darkness of a camel's-har tent wth the echo of a woman's screams vbratng n my ears. Gong to the door I beheld n amazement my travelng companons, the Arabs, fallng upon ther faces, whle they chanted loudly n a werd, mnor key. I made out that a baby had ded. It belonged to a Persan woman who traveled n a cage-lke box on a camel by day, but danced for the footsore plgrms by nght. As I gazed on the curous people before me the woman sprang from the ground besde her dead chld and, wavng her bare, dusky arms over the prostrate prayng trbe, wldly called down curses on the camel drvers. Almost drectly they dug a shallow hole and bured the chld, whle the mother sat apparently unmoved, starng dry-eyed across the heat-scorched sands. By ones and twos the tred men dsappeared nto ther tents untl only the mother, one Arab and myself were left outsde. Ths natve was a Haj, wth a beard panted fery red, and unquestoned authorty. He now saw ft to exercse ths power by abusng the woman and orderng her to bed. She shrank from hm and begged pteously to be let.alone. I saw an expresson of deepest cruelty overspread hs features as he bent over her, hssng: "So be It. You st here ths nght and tomorrow your ear drums shall be bored n wth thorns and your soft eyelds splt thrce." Why, I mused, would I endure the hardshps of a desert trp wth a band of wanderers, rockng all day on a camel's back, eatng only dred fruts and drnkng muddy Tgrs water from a goatskn why? Because the sweet sren voce of adventure called rwas stll callng and I smled at the ablty of that voce to be heard over these bodly dscomforts as I got up and went once more out of the tent for a cool breath. It was almost mmedately that my attenton was attracted to a queerlookng object lyng on the desert to the east of our camp, near a depresson called the Wells. A few low trees and camel thorns grew there, but I dd not remember ths partcular boulder, for such t appeared. Perhaps, I thought frvolously, some feversh, bespectacled antquaran dug t up and left t after he had removed the ancent scarab t concealed. The place nvted exploraton. I decded to walk out to t. ' I had gone about half of the dstance between the eamp and the desert stone when I was brought to a standstll so suddenly that my vertebrae tweaked. Wth a slow, clumsy twtch the thng had rolled perkly over once, then all was stll. The sands were slent, wth only a desert's slence. Ths object of my stroll had turned over, unaded by human hands. And more, as t turned T could have sworn t emtted radant flashes as of damonds n a bass of gold. My breath came short and, hard, my eyes were straned from ther sockets I wanted a lttle more assurance that I was lookng upon a phenomenon. I had not long to wat. The gorgeous apparton turned agan and, slowly acqurng a regular, moton, came drectly toward me. Its revolutons dazzled my eyes ns the l;rht of the moon caught the fre of the jewels. Fear and wonder transfxed me whle an cy grasp enveloped my arms and legs. I seemed -to be freezng wth horror and the ball was ganng speed, farly whrlng toward me, aflame wth ts own splendor. Suddenly my paralyss dropped away. Self-preservaton sent me runnng at my hghest speed across, the hot earth. I beleved t was a small celestal body that would kll us wth lre or smother us wth ts posonous?ases. Musa, my good gude, slept f>y my door. I must warn hm of ths approachng doom. I was breathless and could not call out. I was trng and that horrble tlng just behnd me. I staggered aganst the Srst tent prop and looked back to gauge the dstance between myself and- ths messenger of death, when a bran-storm sezed me. My hand sought my head, there was somethng vaguely famlar about the shape and swft tumblng moton of the body. A pcture of the States and a stage flashed through my head. At ths moment the lttle demon of brllance swerved from ts drect course,. Fear left me. I was tryng to remember the fant lkeness. Ah! I had»t The contortonsts! A tumbler! T was about to congratulate myself when the pathos of t struck me, for the ball had stopped besde the tny grave and the dancng woman was alone wth her dead. The red costume wth ts mllon spangles and cheap stones had served her well. Had cruel Haj seen the flery ball he would have fallen on hs face and mplored the sun god to remove ths sgn of wtherng drouth. She had planned cautously. I went noselessly nto my house of cloth. I know not how long she remaned or how she went a'.'fay. I was only too grateful that the greedy love of adventure had not qute led me nto betrayng tender mother love. (Copyrght.) In Ffth avenue I there were few pedestrans, and a fat man n evenng dress hurryng northward, attracted attenton. Sx nght brds, who thought hs actons mysterous, followed a few paces n the rear. At Thrty-second street a polceman, dozng on the opposte sde of the road, straghtened hmself as he saw the hurryng group comng towards hm. Swngng hs nght stck he crossed over and wated the approach of the ltte processon. The Law was a trfle astonshed. As he stood lookng after the Leader ol the hurryng squad, he was jostled by the nqustve ones followng, and he became annoyed. He grabbed a strawhatted youth by the shoulder and questoned hm. "What's the matter?" he cred. "Search me," answered the questoned one. "Le'me go; I want to see what the ole guy s up to." The polceman lost hs temper. He was beng treated wth dsrespect. "Here, what's the game?" he panted. "What sort of a stunt are you up to, anyhow?" The fat man shook off the grp of the Law and ran faster than ever, bs outstretched hands crclng round each pered nto hs ear as he kept pace wth the fat man. The new polceman guffawed loudly, and agan the angry crowd looked vanly for the humor that seemed apparent to the two guardans of the peace. The frst polceman slackened speed, called out a frendly "Good luck" to the fat man, and then returned to hs own beat,' whle hs comrade trotted swftly n hs place. The fat man swung east, down Ffty-thrd street, and new recruts joned the processon at every yard. But all thrsted vanly for nformaton. Questons put by the newcomers were met wth the one answer: "Don't know; look at hs hands. Been twstng them round and round all the way from Twenty-eghth street." Crossng Thrd avenue the fat man halted suddenly. He knelt dow upon the car tracks, and the offcer stooped besde hm. The crowd pressed round tll the swftly-swung nghtstck swept them back. Much of ther breath was exhausted n strange phrases denouncng the secrecy of the polce, but they were determned to see the end. Near Second avenue a man standng on the sdewalk turned when he beard the nose of the chargng squad and contemplated the runners. Then he stepped nto the street and crossed over. The fat man chuckled. He whspered to the polceman at hs rght hand, and the offcer dashed ahead. The man n front started to run, but hs pursuer overhauled hm n a dozen strdes, and they rolled on the pavement. "Wot's the matter?" gasped the captured one. "Wot are yer scruffn' me for?" "Ths gentleman wants hs rubber door-mat," murmured the polceman, relevng hs captve of the parcel he carred beneath hs arm. Preparatons for the flmng of ths George Gbbs novel began two months before actual flmng started. At the tme Roberts Kane, who presents ths producton through Paramount, decded upon ths story, Drector Kng began to mentally cast the varous roles. He decded upon the deal players for all but one of the parts. Then he set out to obtan the servces of the "deal" cast and, to hs own surprse, was successful n each nstance. Fttng Alce Terry to the role of Joan Freeman was easy. The story had been decded upon n the frst place because the leadng femnne role seemed to have been wrtten especally for her. So t came about that the queenly beauty of the one who ganed fame n "Scarmouche," "The Arab," "The Prsoner of Zenda,' "The Great Dvde," and other productons, become Joan Freeman n "Sackcloth and Scarlet." As had been predcted, those n charge of the stands where wares for the most part conssted of edble products, were kept qute busy the entre evenng.
