KELVINATOR ELECTRIC REFRIGERATION $ nnd up DOLAN BROS. 131) NO. UKOADWAY Telephone 294 Councl Consders Assessor Problems Resgnaton of Davd Qunlan, Thrd Dstrct Assessor, Brngs Up Debatable Ponts. That the local lax assessors are expected to functon as a board and not as ndvduals was the somewhat 'prsng development at the meetng of the Common Councl Tuesday evenng. Kven the councl members admtted havng been under the mpresson that a tax assessor for a gven dstrct had more or less full jursdcton over the assessments n hs partcular dstrct. Ths s not the case, n the opnon of Cty Solctor Coan, expressed as a passng thought n connecton wth another queston relatng to the tax assessorshp of the thrd dstrct referre'd to hm for opnon. The matter came up when the. resgnaton of Davd Qunlan aa ssessor for the thrd dstrct here vns read by the Cty Clerk. In ofern >' a moton to accept the regnaton, Counclman Stanton offered the name of Ex-Counclman J nl a,). Connors for the appontment. It was Counclman-ut-Largc J. Raymond Malloy that brought up he queston of whether or not an ssessor was not requred to resde.vthn the boundares of the taxng lstrcl for whch he was appontd. Nether of the other two counlmev present, Messrs. Gallagher.ml Stanton, were certan about the matter so t was referred to Mr. oan. Mr. Coan ddn't thnk t was essental that the appontee resde n he dstrct for whch he was beng ppontecl. In jlookng up the.ft under whch the Cty s ncormrated t seems that n the old lays when the assessors \v«re electd by popular vote, there was an ssessor for each, ward and removal rom the ward, etc. was equvalent o a resgnaton from the job. But hs does not apply (under the preent system ol' councl electon of ssessorehps, Durng hs remarks Mr. Coan lad that the Board of Assesors unctoned as a unt and each as- ;essor n makng the assessments.'as n theory asssted by the other nembers of the board. Thus passed nother bt of prestge that goes vth a cty offce. Incdently, despte the opnon of he Cty Solctor, whch was not -onclusve, he admtted, Mr. Maloy refused to vote on the moton appont Sr. Connurs because of hs techncalty, Thus the matter jad to be dropped and the acton taken was to accept the resgnaton f Mr. Qunan. The appontment o fll the vacancy wll come up at future meetng. Local People Receve Valuable Gfts Twelve Przes Awarded at Furnture Company's Event Last Fcday. 2 THE SOVTH AMBOY CITIZEN FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, U,YOUS CM 71NDTHE STATE AND COUNTY Ol'f d--ct XII. TNRUS Motorsts would sr.ve a lot of nconvenence for themselves and others on the roads f they developed the habt of makng rght and left turns n accordance wth the method outlned by the State traffc law, The Woodbrdge clover-leaf grade separaton and tbo rondponts, or traffc crcles beng constructed at "varous mportant nterssctons thrucut the State, wth ther emphass on keepng to the rght, undoubtedly are developng a turnng technque whch many motorsts heretofore have lacked. But there are thousands of drvers who do not have occason to travel over these roads and they contnue to make unnecessary trouble for themselves and for others by ther clumsness n makng rght and left turns. A rght turn s smple, f the drver prepares for t by workng h? way nto the extreme rght traflc lane before he approaches an ntersecton. Some motorsts may rdcule ths suggeston as too elementary They may nsst that the practce s BO obvously necessary that t does not warrant re-statement. Let such crtcs stand at any busy ntersecton and note the actons of even experenced drvers. An unbelevably large number wll approach an ntersecton on the extreme left of traffc and then, recklessly swerve or cautously nose across traffc on ther rght to make -a turn. And ths notwthstandng tho express provson of the State traffc law that "the drver of a vehcle ntendng to turn to the rght at an ntersecton, shall approach such ntersecton n the lane for traffc nearest to the rght-hand curb or sde of the hghway, and n turnng shall keep as closely as practcable to the rghthand curb or sde of tho hghway untl the turn s completed " When ntendng to turn to the left, the law says the drver "shall approach such ntersecton n the lane for traffc to the rght of and nearest to the center lne of the hghway, :and n turnng left shall pass mmedately to the left of the center of "the ntersecton, passng as closely as shall be practcable to the left of the center of the ntersecton." Here t may be approprate to voce a word of warnng aganst he all too-prevalent practce of cuttng corners, whch means turnng sharply along the left curb. Especally s ths hazardous at blnd corners, where tha.approach of another car on the nter- sectng street may cause a serous collson. By obeyng the law and turnng from the left of the center of the ntersecton, and precsely al that pont, clear vson down the ntersectng street s obtanable. - It should be understood that the Jaw gves local authortes, n ther respectve jursdcton, authorty to "toughest enforcement area," July nance was ntroduced and passed protecton of propertv and persons -><)'.> prohbton enforcements have on ts frst readng, and that on Such specal pol--me or patrolmen' ITrlfr AP IMTfnPPT ' f"^111 '' 1. t0 * h f c *V h 'v 2 f S; ' tem! Owners of mnature courses n Atlantc Hghlands, Red Sank, Long Branch and Freehold, as -well as a dozen or so ntermedate ponts, were asked the queston. Possbly because the wsh was father to the thought, or possbly because they are keen students of human nature, the owners repled, substantally: "The mnature golf courses wll enjoy large followngs for many years to come. The game s here to stay. In the nland dstrcts the game affords an nterestng dverson, just lke the moves or swmmng, and flls n admrably between these two pastmes. There s no more reason to suppose that followers wll fnd ther ardor cooled a year hence than t s to suppose that regulaton-golf wll suffer a declne. There sn't a sngle sport that you can name that can be played by young and old wth so lttle mmedate preparaton and at so low a cost as Tom Thumb golf. When you go bathng.you have to hre a bath house, tndress, dry off and dress agan. When you play tenns (and tenns sn't a unversal sport by any means) you have to tog up accordngly.
