He said he siuaion "would need a leer or verbal conac wih whoever is in charge of he dormiory o ell hem o keep he equipmen clean and keep he equipmen covered." Environmenal Healh and Safey Specialis Michael McCauslin, who inspeced he food sales las monh and compiled he repor, recommended "requiring all food sales o be limied o pre-packaged food," in a Nov. 15 leer o Faher John Van Wolvlear, vice presiden of Suden Affairs. A policy change is expeced from Van Wolvlear before he end of he semeser. Commening on he change, Van Wolvlear said, " suspec ha some food iems (such as ho dogs) will be allowed, bu some ha require special equipmen, such as pizza ovens, will no." Some of he violaions in he repor, however, would warran shudown if hey were no correced immediaely, Deichley said. nsec and rodeo infesaion, lised in McCauslin's repor as a violaion in Fisher, Flanner, Sanford and Sorin halls' food sales, would cause a couny healh inspecor o close down he food-preparing esablishmen "unless he violaion were correced immediaely," Deichley noed. McCauslin's repor found '.'mouse infesaion" in Fisher and Sorin halls' food sales, "roden infesaion" in Flanner Hall's food sales, and "an and roach infesaion" in Sanford Hall's food sales. Deichley added, "Whaever we do in he couny is also saewide. Everybody in he sae of ndiana would have o conform wih he same regulaions." However, he noed, "The dorms are no under our jurisdicion. They're done hrough Bob Zerr (Direcor of Environmenal Healh and Safey)." Zerr declined commen on he repor's resuls, and said McCauslin would no be available for commen on he issue unil Monday. Deichley said while he violaions lised in a couny healh deparmen repor remain on he business's record, a specified amoun of ime is given o correc he violaions. "The amoun ofime would vary wih he case," he added. Sorin Food Sales Manager Larry Nardolillo said ha mos of Sorin's violaions lised in he repor already have been correced. "We've go wo new ovens and cleaned he microwave," he said. "Alhough we have mice hroughou he dorm, we've never seen a mouse in he food sales area all year... The Universiy renovaed he enire basemen of Sorin, including he foodsales, o Universiy specificaions." 3 . The Observer Organizer explains dinner cancellaion By JOAN GDLN News Saff The Madrigal Chrismas Dinners, an annual 1 5h- 16h cenury choral music and dance Chrismas producion a Sain Mary's, were cancelled largely because of a personal decision by he even's organizer, Professor Ray Sprague. Sprague, assisan professor of music a Sain Mary's, said being denied enure by he College led him o make "a crucial decision" as o wha aciviies he would devoe his ime o his year. " had o sar hinking in erms of sricly professional aciviies, as much as waned o have he dinners. have worked on hem for six years because waned o and because believed in hem." Sprague said he fel he should dedicae his las year a Sain Mary's o oher hings. - Anoher major problem is ha he Chamber Singers, he real backbone of he producion, jus didn' come ogeher his year, Sprague noed. "The original funcion of he Chamber Singers was o perform in he Madrigal Dinners each Chrismas season and o go on our each spring," he said. "Unforunaely, he financial siuaion caused he our money o be cu, and he our was dropped. We los a lo of he male singers bec"ause of he our's cancellaion, and he dinners were a lo of hard work and long holrs." Sprague had offered o help ou ahd coordinae his year's dinners, bu could no oversee he smaller, necessary, bu ime-consuming asks. The dinners, sared 11 years ago by Dr. James McCray, originally w ere.designed o raise money for he our fund. Over he years, he direcors changed he forma and allocaed some of he our money o beer cosumes and decoraions. " r Corby"s] :Jill was a capial invesmen, because he decoraions can be used again and he cosumes can be i_rnproved year o year. The Office of Special Programs helped ou by adding a good lighing sysem o creae differen moods and he like. "n he pas few years, we have been using more of he early insrumens and more auhenic dance and music from he 15h and 16h cenuries. We have a fireplace a he end of he room and long ables. f you weren' aware ha you were in he Regina Norh lounge, you'd almos believe ha you were a a Madrigal Dinner," said Sprague. Alhough in recen years he icke price increased o $12.50, his did no hur aendance, said Sprague. A he wors imes, he show sold ou wo o hree nighs, he said, wih an aendance low of abou SQO, or 125 a nigh. Aendance peaked abou four years ago wih 700. Sprague said he dinners arac a crowd composed mainly of people from Souh Bend and surrounding communiies. This year, here is anoher Madrigal Dinner in he ar_ea, and each year more Chrismas evens compee wih he dinners. Sprague feels ha Sain Mary's has been very forunae o have mainained such high aendance. Sprague &aid he Madrigal Dinners can coninue in he fuure, bu will have o be re-hough ou and approached wih a new forma. Professor Clayon Henderson, music deparmen"chairman a Sain Mary's said, "The Madrigal Dinners will go on. Bu his year, wihou he core of he singers, he producion was vir" ually impossible. Sain Mary's is he.only college in he area wih a Madrigal Dinner, and we will j;eep he radiion going." fhe dinners were originally slaed for Thursday, Dec. hrough Thursday, Dec. 8. Holy Cross junior Cindy Boyle said she doesn' feel he changes are neccessary, because all halls oher han Regina "are inegraed enough." " wouldn' wan o live in Regina again nex year," said Suzanne Licon, "because i's going o ake a long ime before Regina loses i's sigma as he freshman dorm." Mary Louise Padden, a sophomore from Holy Cross, said she hinks he proposal is a goou idea, because "i would give he freshmen a chance o alk o upperclassmen." Wha Rome has o do Wih Wall Sree Bishops o consul expers in business, heology o gaher informaion for upcoming pasoral leer By MARY JACOBY News Saff The old quesion "Wha has jerusalem o do wih Ahens?" will be appropriaely changed o "Wha has Rome o do wih Wall Sree" when a symposium sudying ehics and he markeplace convenes a Nore Dame Monday. Five American bishops charged wih drafing a pasoral leer on Caholic social eaching and he American economy for he Naional Conference of Caholic Bishops will consul wih expers in business, labor and heology. The bishops will likely presen heir firs draf documen a he naional conference of bishops in November This symposium, however. is he firs consulaion by he bishops ha has been open o he public. More han 50 colleges and universiies will be represened, and 20 newspaper and elevision reporers from around he counry will aend. Because he evenual documen may criicize some aspecs of capialism, he bishops' effors are aracing almos as much aenion as he commiee which recenly drafed he saemen on nuclear war. The bishops' commiee, appoined in 1981 by he naional bishops conference, asked Nore Dame's Cener for Ehics and Religious Values in Business o convene he symposium. The cener is under he co-direcorship of Faher Oliver Williams and john Houck, boh of he managemen deparmen. "The bishops wan o wrie a documen oday ha hisorians 40 or 50 years from now will say had major impac on he rajecory of indusrial sociey," Houck said. The naional conference of bishops in 1919, Houck added, wroe a documen on he economy ha "laid he blueprin for he New Deal." The symposium will be held in he Cener for Coninuing Educaion Monday hrough Wednesday. Seminars on economic planning, employmen he poor, and U.S. rade wih developing counries will be led by 18 expers in he fields. Some 50 resource persons from Nore Dame's faculy and from church, business and labor groups will paricipae in he discussions. The seminar leaders will disribue previously prepared 25-page papers and summarize he conens during he discussions. Microphones will also be provided o allow he audience o ask quesions. The bishops' commiee previously decided ha he proposed leer should include a presenaion of Chrisian principles and a of he economy. The symposium is open o he general public, including sudens. Advance regisraion is required. According o Williams, he pasoral leer was proposed because he church has always been concerned wih insilling Chrisian values in sociey. The leer, he said, will focus on how Chrisian ehics can help deermine he organizaion of he economy for boh growh and equiy so ha economic burdens do no fall primarily on he poor. By examining Caholic social eaching and he American economy, he bishops hope o offer guidance o people wishing o apply religious values o he economy. The bishops' commiee has already wrien he porion of he leer concerning Chrisian principles and visions of he economy. Bu a complee draf - including secions on economic planning, employmen, he poor, and Third World rade- has no been made final. Williams said he bishops will have o decide a nex week's conference how deailed he leer should be. Chrisian principles mus be applied o he four areas, alhough he said here arc no any specific "Chrisian" answers o he problems. "The hrus here is o find ou he meaning of one's faih as i applies o an indusrial sociey," Houck said. Sudens preparing for careers in business, law, medicine and engineering "would wan o ask hese quesions." Commiee members, arriving on Dec. 13 and 14, will be saying a he Morris nn. There were some flaws in his, like: in he case of he occasional person who overslep his place in line, and i also wa'> a mess in large loeries, bu compar:d o he sysc:m of hrowing Ds ino a ha and drawing hem, and having people pay for he ickes wihou knowing wha hey're gc:ing bdorc:hand, i makes more sense. Sc:cond, develop some way o deermine suden response o cerain acs. is my undersanding ha he concer people a Suden Union had no idea how popular a Billy Joel concer would be. Shame:, shame! n April 1979, Joel made a sop a he ACC during his 52nd Sree our. The people running concer loreries knew how popular he was hen (and he's even more popular now) and were ready for i: he loery was scheduled a nigh ( 7 pm) and in Sepan Cener, he: larges building available. Approximaely 1,850 people were here:, and he line sreched a one: poin back o he Norh Dining Hall. We: all know wha happened when ao; many people ried o jam ino he Nazz! There are cerain acs which will do well accep he limiaions of he English language, openly acknowledge hem and move on o less inracable probler.s? do agree, however, wih Picher's conclusion ha "when we sop referring o God exclusively as 'He' we will make more of a saemen abou ourselves han God." ndeed, we may make an "Az" ou of vurselves. Rick Aucher P. 0. Box Q Exam proposal Dear Edior: Nex year a his ime could he sudying for exams ha~ are worh more han one half of my grade. However,, like he majoriy of Nore Dame sudens will be grealy dismayed if his new exam proposal is passed. Alhough here may be some reasoning behind he sysem, he disadvanages grealy ouweigh he benefis.!.alhough an exam is a good meao;ure of he suden's comprehension, an exam is no necessarily he bes mehod for every course. 2.A more heavily weighed exam would probably make he suden sudy more inenly. Bu presenly, mos sudens sudy coninually hroughou he semeser and sudy ~ aa&jl even harder during exam ime. However, if fv.,. he final exam is worh one half or more of he final grade, here would be a greaer endency o "blow off' he semeser and cram for he final. creaing poor sudy habis..'u could also foresee 6ercer compeiion ~ among sudens. Righ now, he sudens arc highly compeiive, bu no necessarily wih each oher. Friendliness prevails here as sudens help each oher, unlike many schools where experimens are desroyed and hdp is d<:nied. Bu if he exam value is increased, academics would be sressed even more, and people would be more concerned abou heir own academics and no heir fellow sudens. 4.Finally, i would be highly unfair if one wao; o work diligenly hroughou he course, geing good grades, ye because of a "bad day" or poor esing abiliy, he grade could be among ND sudens. Everyone knows Bruce Springseen is one of hem, bu no one seems o know who else. Finding hose ou is imporan o avoid having anoher oudoor loery in freezing weaher. also should avoid having o give sudens an excess of bleacher seas. Third, when a high-demand concer does come o he ACC, change he loery sysem! One of he flaws of boh he old and new 'llehods described above is he wai... and wai... and wai involved. Seniors will recall he bungled Bruce Springseen loery of December 980, in which sudens sa in Sepan Cener on he sudy day before finals for up o five hours - for bleacher se:j.s or no scas a all. This leads o he obvious quesion (and answer) on solving his: Hasn' anyone who works a Suden Union ever heard of he compuer? Afer ha loery, wroe an aricle in The Observer (January 16, 198) explaining how Suden Union could run big loeries using his novel device. The mehod is similar o ha adoped in 98 by he Services Commission for is away fooball game loreries: sudens sign up for several days, lising name and D number, and hen he enries are fed ino a compuer. will hen spi hem ou in random order. The lis hen could be posed in several convenien LaForune locaions. drasically lowered. By viewing he effecs of he exam proposal, i is dear ha i only pus he Nore Dame suden a a disadvanage. Kelly McCloskey ND-SMCies Dear Edior: The hough of being a freshman a Sain Mary's College, locaed righ across he sree from he Universiy of Nore Dame, had me ecsaic hroughou he summer. Upon arrival, found he recepion from boh schools raher cordial a firs. However, by he second week of school! was dubbed a "SMC Chick." 've heen wondering since ha day why \ OJL J dg 0)\4/fl And fourh, end preferenial reamen in loeries for anyone no direc~y involled wih he process. has come o my aenion ha, more ofen and more blaanly han in oher years, Suden Union and Suden Governmen people have been abusing heir privilege of preferenial concer ickes. They ask for seas closer han ever o he fron row; a leas in he pas, hey were more discree in choosing icke locaions. Only hose people who have somehing o do wih he process - he Concer Commissioner, he people helping run he loery and sell ickes come o mind immediaely - deserve such a fringe benefi. Everyone else - ener he loery like your fellow classmaes. 's no wonder ha sudens wih decen picks (by pas sandards) ended up in Secion 7 or 0. Supposedly, some measures are being aken o make hings run more smoohly in he fuure. Bu as Souh Bend is no a popular sop for mos acs he ND/SMC communiy wans o see, wiu he Billy Joel mess - which made ha Springseen one seem like i was perfec - be forgoen by he nex ime? Le's hope no. Tim Nee~y, a 1983 Nore Dame graduae, currenly lives in Souh Bend. An Observer columnis for several years, he is currenly working on a book deailing he hisory of Nore Dame baskeball. Sain Mary's sudens are sc.-coyped and why a rivalry which really shouldn' exis, sews beween girls from Nore Dame and Sain Mary's. hough boh schools formed one Chrisian communiy in which anybody and everybody could be friends. The lao; hing a freshman from eiher campus needs is rejecion. Each ime sep on he Nore Dame campus feel like an invader. This frivolous prejudice held hy girls from boh campuses should be cas aside. Jus because aend Sain Mary's insead of Nore Dame does no mean am "supid" or "incompeen." is abou ime hese wo insiuions ry o forify, insead of sever, a bond among he sudens. 9 Showcase Leers o a Lonely God Applause! Applause! by Rev. Rober Griffin feaures columnis aher John Reedy, C.S.C., publis of Ave Maria Press and assis Fher an recor of Carroll Hall, died las Friday. A dinner on Sunday, Faher Mike Murphy asked, "Are you going o wrie abou john in The Obseroer?" answered, " hope no." Grief becomes so public, as hough you were showing off, when you wrieofhedead. Ye, in weny-five years of wriing, always wroe wih john Reedy in mind. He was he criic, seen ou of he corner of my eye, whose approval was seeking. No one can ake his place as he faihful reader. am wriing his because his deparure is so overwhelmingly on my mind. john and were ogeher as seminarians; he was ordained wo years ahead of me. As edior of Ave Maria magazine, he published a number of my early pieces, including he very firs aricle. He encouraged me o wrie. praising my syle for having a special ouch, or infuriaingly chuckling as he rejeced he junk. mus have wrien more han a million words in my lifeime, and john, hink, saw mos of hem. He read aricles never dreamed he would see; occasionally, because of him, Obseroer pieces would be re-prined in naional publicaions. He alked of publishing a book of my wriings, and kep a file of maerials had auhored afer old him never kep copies of hings wroe. "Applause! Applause!" is he name of he game. The old vaudevillian akes he cener ofhe sage and shuffles hrough his dance rouine. He'll perform unil his dying breah if he audience encourages him. The dying Tinker Bell revives when she hears he clapping. n Salinger's sory, Zooey ells Franny ha he show mus go on because he Fa Miss Manners Lady is waching. The Fa Lady belongs wih he las ones of he Gospel who represen Chris. John Reedy, for me, ook he place ofhe Fa Lady. He was Peer Pan and he Homeless boys clapping for Tinker Bell. He was he appreciaive audience which kep he sof-shoe dancer going. He was my firs and las criic; because he was so unfailingly ineresed, he was probably he mos valuable criic. Reedy, as a lifelong friend, undersood he kinds of experience ha go ino wriing; he was a wrier himself Las year asked him, "John, why do you wrie?" He said, wih a grin, "Because of our egos." He undersood he pain underlying he carefully chosen words. Once, when my life was chaoic, and john was in a posiion of auhoriy, he conribued o he pain, and wen hrough a period of misrusing him. He old me should expec no special favors because he was my friend. never expeced special favors, and fel he was unfair. never waned o work for him as a young edior, because he would have been a ough boss. He mellowed wih he years. He would have become a beauiful old man, if he had lived He was one of he younges of our elders, wise and compassionae as a leader should be afer being blessed by suffering. Membership in a religious communiy gives you many brohers in Chris; i means you make many rips o he church o say goodbye o confreres. One funeral is like anoher, bu all deahs don' leave you feeling so exposed o life. Who else will undersand so well of care as John did? Who else will keep me hones wih his grin and ironic chuckle? A Mass, hink of he whie crosses in he cemeery by S. Mary's lake. How long does i ake in heaven o say hello o everyone? Do you speak o God firs, before shaking hands wih your family? Or do he sains gaher o mee you on he shore, so ha hey can lead you in like a freshman being brough o see he recor? shouldn' be searcy, should i, going o sleep in deah, when you know you will wake in he morning o he sigh of familiar faces? The hardes par of dying may be ha here is no chance of wriing a column abou i laer. The mysics who have visied heaven always say ha words are inadequae o describe he experience. 's hard o ge enhusiasic abou eerniy as you imagine i while living in an imperfec world. john Reedy, like ohers before him, has sepped ino an adjoining room, and closed he door behind him. A he hour of his deah, he was joined by wo oher members of Holy Cross, including Broher Kieran Ryan. 's impossile o imagine he joy ofhe family reunion. A he funeral services, fel jealous of he minisers who officiaed, as hough hey were closer o John han was. On a lis ofjohn Reedy's bes friends, here were probably many names ahead of mine, hough we were scarcely compeing. Reedy gave hem good advice, exchanged sories, performed as an elder, made hem feel cared for. Probably he didn' give hem an ideniy; ha's wha owed him: he gave me an ideniy. He said, "n wha you do bes, when you do i well, you have a special gif which gives excellence o your work." How beauiful i is o have a criic who praises you so highly. Life buns quie a lo when you lose your cheerleader. On behalf of all who miss him, wish he hadn' lef us so soon. Throw guess a meaphorical owel Dear Miss Manners - Please discuss houseguess who visi roommaes. Ou of financial necessiy, four of us share a ownhouse. We all have our own bedrooms; he oher wo women share he full bah off he maser bedroom. share he hall bah wih he man who is our fourh roommae. We live quie independenly of each oher, rarely go ou or socialize wih each oher, bu he household runs quie smoohly. We all spli he ren and divide all he household expenses. We share a living room wih half bah, a dining room urned sudy area, and a small kichen wih a able ha scas hree. Thing.-; are fine unil we sared geing houseguess. Wha are he hosess's responsibiliies oward boh he guess and he roommaes? Wha are he "roommaes" responsibiliies? And how should guess ac? Here arc some of he siuaions ha have occurred: Gues, and "didn' wan o be any boher" o heir hosess, and so would no use her bahroom, bu insead used he hall bah and hose "owels already ou." They lef he living room sofd bed coninually open and heir suicases and personal hings srewn abou so ha i by Judih Marin consanly looked like a fifh bedroom and was unusable as a living room. Guess and V didn' seem o realize ha we were cooking individually, and aced shocked when didn' share my dinner.( didn' have enough o share.) They also made no aemp a all o be quie in he mornings, alhough hey knew was on a schedule ha should have allowed me o sleep an hour longer. fel hey hough was somewha of a co-hosess. Gues V ried o be helpful, and even aemped o help me ou be removing dishes from my bedroom and puing hem in he dishwasher. Since hese included my ea's waer bowl and my favorie mug, neiher of which ever pu in he dishwasher, i was a puzzle o figure ou where hey were. f hese were in-laws, 'd feel cerain responsibiliies. fl really were a co-hosess, 'd know how o ac. Since 'm no, don' know he delicae differences beween rudeness and being sraighforward. Separaely, hese problems aren' very big. Bu 'm oally fed up by now. My roommaes eiher can' or won' sugges anyhing abou making sure we aren' consanly imposed on by guess. Wha should we do? The eiquee rules of he pas never had o deal wih a muli-independen person household. Can you please provide some ground rules? Genle Reader - Oh, yes, hey did, bu he esablishmens were called boarding houses, and hey had a residen owner who made rules and enforced hem or ejeced people who violaed hem. You will have o do his cooperaively, as equals, which is harder, bu as you have managed o pu ogeher a smooh household in oher respecs, Miss Manners is confiden you can accomplish his. Wha is hrowing you off is he pseudo-social relaionship you feel oward he guess, who have hus innocenly aoused your ire. Miss Manners raher piies hem, warily creeping abou, dripping wih anxiey o be ou of heir hoses.j's way, oaly o sumble ino yours. Throw hem a meaphorical owel, will you? Draw up some rules abou how much hospialiy--including elephone ime, bahroom assignmens and food suplies--each of you has o offer your guess. f yo a prin hem and eiher hand hem ou or {los hem, each of you can apologize o her guess, pleading heir cooperaion in placaing an unreasonable, fasidious :md sric landlady who remains secluded in he a~c unless her wrah is aroused. This will be he firs meeing ever beween he. 3 3 rish and he Engineers, who have a record of 0-4 his year. The Engineers, who los four sarers o graduaion las year, will bring a very young eam, including a young coach, o Nore Dame his weekend. This season marks he firs year ha Lehigh coach Tom Schneider is coaching college bas- rishlookorebound agains rival Michigan By MKE SULLVAN Spors Edior Afer being reaed raher rudely a~ visiors o Welsh-Ryan Arena by Norhwesern Wednesday nigh, he Nore Dame women's baskeball eam will ry o rea heir visiors he same way onigh as Michigan comes o he ACC a 7:30p.m. Mary DiSanislao's rish hope o even heir record a 3 3 agains he Wolverines. However, in order o do so, hey mus avoid he ype of offensive bale ha hey had wih Norhwesern. Nore Dame's srengh since DiSanislao ook over four years ago has been is defense and ha defense will once again be esed by he Wolverines and heir fa-;-paced, run-and-gun offense. "Our game wih Michigan is always a good game," says DiSanislao. "They ake a lo of shos and score on he ransiion game." As he Norhwesern game indicaed, Nore Dame is someimes vulnerable o a good ransiion game. The Wildcas' rapping defense gave he rish guards a grea deal of rouble early in he second half and helped Norhwesern jump ou o a lead ha i never los. f he rish can conrol he empo of he game and no allow Gloria Soluk's squad o ge he offense in high gear, he Wolverines could be in rouble. Conrolling Michigan's offense has no been oo hard for opponens his year. The Wolverines have dropped boh of heir games so far, losing firs o Wesern Michigan and hen o Cenral Michigan. Add his sar o a 4-24 record las year, and i would appear ha Michigan should be a pushover. However, h Wolverines do play Nore Dame ough, as la~ year's 62-'H! loss o he would indicae. n ha game, The Nore Dame hockey eam will pu is undefeaed record on he line his weekend when i akes on Division power Lake Fores in a weekend series Michigan rallied from a 16-poin defici o ge wihin a baske wih less han a minue lef in he game. On paper, his Michigan eam would seem o be improved over las year's. Ten lecrwinners reurn from las year's eam. However, he one leerwinner ha did no reurn his year, Peg Hare, averaged almos 20 poins a game and served as cocapain while only a sophomore. Judging from he eam's early season performance, her deparure afer her sophomore year has hur he eam considerably. Wihou Hare, he Wolverines sill have a powerful offense ha ceners around he guards. Sophomore Orchia Lilly and senior Lori Gnakowski are he guards ha will direc he offense. Lilly was second on he eam in scoring behind Hare )a<; year wih a 13.3 average, while Gnakowski was also among he scoring leaders as she averaged 7.4 poins a game. "They are a good ransiion game eam which has good ouside shoo ing," explains DiSanislao. "Their guards are no afraid o drive o he baske, eiher. "Wha hur us agains Norhwesern was our inabiliy o conrol Anucha Browne (who scored 35 poins) and our vulnerabiliy o he ransiion game, especially wih guards driving o he baske and heir defense." While he guards are very imporan o he offense, i is a forward, Wendy Bradeich, ha has been carrying he brun of he scoring so far his year. Bradeich, a 6-0 sophomore, averaged almos 11 poins and six rebounds a game la-; year, bu his year she is averaging more han 20 poins a game. see MCHGAN, page 14 keball. Leading he Engineers on floor omorrow will be 6-6 junior forward and capain Paul Wickman, he only sarer reurning from las year's eam. He will be joined a he oher forward spo by 6-5 freshman Seamus Dowling who is averaging jus under seven poins he game so far his year. Wickman and Dowling will ge some suppor up fron by 6-9 senior Terry Moran a cener. "Moran has really esablished himself as a force in he middle his year," according o Engineer assisan coach Fran McCaffery. Mark Murphy, a 6-2 sophomore, will help run he Lehigh offense from his guard posiion. His running mae a guard will be anoher freshman, 6-1 Mike Polaha, who McCaffery says "played well" in Lehigh's 13-poin loss o Navy Wednesday nigh and carries an 8.0 scoring average. They will be suppored by 6-3 sophomore guard Mike Androlewicz, who scored 22 poins in Wednesday's game and comes off he bench o lead Lehigh in scoring wih a 12.0 average. McCaffery affirms ha he Engineers "will come o play" omorrow, and says he doesn' hink hey will aler heir game syle for he rish. "The size facor will be a problem for us," he concedes, "especially a he forward posiions." see LEHGH, page Home-and-home series lbc Obsc=rvcr/Paul Lifarelli Tim Kempon, shown here aemping a layup agains UCLA, is one of he people ha will need o be more producive omorrow when he rish enerain Lehigh omorrow. They have beaen Cenral Saes Coflegiae Hockey League member Marquee. Two more vicories came wih a sweep of Wisconsin-Superior, and anoher was picked up hey spli a series wih Division represenaive Air Force. Two of he Foresers' losses came a he hands of Bemidji Sae, he eam ha las year finished firs in he NCAA Division final sandings. "Lake Fores is one of he perennial Division powers," says Nore Dame coach Lefy Smih. "We'll have our work cu ou for us. We're expecing wo good games." The Lake Fores lineup feaures mosly juniors who have played ogeher since heir freshman season. Experience, herefore, is one of he eam's op asses. "They don' have grea size. They're mosly a finesse eam," says sophomore Gary Becker, a ransfer player from Lake Fores. "They work well as a uni because heir coach (Tony Friz) emphasizes he Russian echnique of keeping guys ogeher wih he same lines." The op wo Nore Dame lines have undergone some resrucuring since las weekend's acion. The new firs line feaures senior Adam Parsons a cener, senior Mike Mezler a righ wing, and junior cocapain Bren Chapman on he lef side. The group firs played ogeher las Saurday and was responsible for all hree rish goals in he 3-3 ie a S. Norber's. Smih was impressed wih heir play, and is looking forward o a similar performance his weekend. Junior Tim Reilly is now he righ wing on he second line. He is eamed wih sophomore Jeff Badalich in he middle and freshman Tom Smih a lef wing. "We're hoping ha Reilly will bring ou he alens of he oher wo," Smih says. "They've been looking good in pracice. They seem o work well ogeher." n preparaion for he upcoming series, he week's workous have been highlighed by a lo of hard skaing. The eam has also been concenraing on inensifying is forechecking and on improving is overall offensive play. "Workous have been prey difficul. We're geing he aiude ha we mus ge going," says Mezler. "We'd like o remain undefeaed, and his weekend won' be anoher llinois or Norhwesern-ype series." The only casualy for he rish his week is junior forward Seve Ely. Ely had been nursing a knee injury and, on Tuesday, he knee finally gave ou. He will mos likely undergo arhroscopic surgery over he upcoming break. "Barring any problems, he should be ready o play in he second semeser," repors Smih. Chapman coninues o lead he eam in scoring. He ha-; accumulaed 32 poins on 5 goals and 7 assiss. Mezler, Parsons, and sophomore Bob Thebeau arc all ied for second wih 19 poins. Mezler ha-; 1 goals. Parsons nine, and Thebeau six.
