My dad buil his farm up for 20 years and wached i burn down in fron of his eyes in one hour, said Marc Racine, son of farmer Keih, afer almos wo days of helping his faher picking hrough he rubbled remains of his barn and work shed. The blaze began in he shed and quickly spread o a neighbouring barn wih family members saying boh burned down wihin an hour. A cause is undeermined, according o Campbell s Bay Fire Chief Kevin Kluke, hough he suspeced he cause was elecrical, due o is origin in he shed. There s only elecrical in here ha could have caused i, surmised Kluke. Ruined were he wo buildings, a bailer, plus housands of dollars of oher farming equipmen and workshop ools. Keih had an acive workshop where he did equipmen repairs and welded. He was in here daily, From 6 a.m. o 6 p.m., according o Marc. Saved were a racor, a ruck and all 85 head of cale on he beef farm. The family had no insurance on any of he iems los. Kluke said firefighers were on he scene for abou hree hours bu despie being a he propery wihin minues of being called, hey were able o do lile o save some of he belongings. The fire deparmen [made] a valian effor. They did everyhing hey could bu i was oo lae, said Racine, sruggling for words a he sie Monday morning. Tweny years of my life are gone. Racine s 19-year-old son, Marc, was compleing an agriculural course in Shawville wih an eye o aking over he farm in he near fuure. Please see FIRE on page wo Picking up he pieces Wilbur McLean. The Equiy Lichfield farmers Marc Racine, lef, and Keih Racine, are forced o rebuild afer a fire desroyed wo buildings on heir farm, plus much equipmen and ools. The fire occurred Saurday afernoon. Junior B s reach Valley division finals Poniac blows hrough Perh; lead Carleon Place in bid for second ile in hree years PONTIAC The Poniac Junior B's made surprisingly easy work of he Perh Blue Wings and are now leading he Valley division finals of he Easern Onario Junior B' Hockey League. Afer a resounding game one loss, he Poniacs won four sraigh games in emphaic fashion in he division semi-finals o eliminae a eam ha on paper should have given he Junior B s all sors of problems. I said since he beginning ha once we go a good defensive zone we would be a very good eam," explained Head Coach Dan Saumier, who has helped ransform he Poniacs from a onedimensional scoring eam o a complee squad. Games four and five agains Perh were srong 8-4 and 4-1 wins, respecively. Game four was never really compeiive once he Poniacs go going and a one ime hey held a 6-0 lead agains he Blue Wings. Six differen players scored for he Poniacs. In game five he Poniacs again made hings look easy agains Perh, conceding only one goal and conrolling play on boh ends. The Poniacs again displayed heir muli-iered aack, as nine differen players conribued a leas one poin o he cause. Once again, he eam's nex series presens an even ougher challenge. Carleon Place has he advanage of being well-resed wih heir second Wilbuf McLean. The EQUITY Jacob Picard of he Asicou Skaing Club performs a he Winer Inviaional held on he weekend in Shawville. For he firs ime he inviaional had enough male enrans o have boys-only evens. round bye giving hem almos wo weeks res. They also led he Valley division pracically from wire-o-wire his season. However, he Poniac eam hey're forced o deal wih barely resembles he one from earlier his season. We played a fabulous game (Sunday) nigh, beamed Saumier. We played very well when we didn' have he puck and ha was he difference. The Poniacs fell behind 2-0 wihin he firs 8:20 of he game. Saumier called a imeou, refocused he players, and he Junior B s managed o pull ou an excellen effor in winning he game 4-3. I old hem o jus keep doing wha hey were doing in our oher games, said Saumier. Local players Sandy Dubeau of Oer Lake and Shane Powell of Shawville were insrumenal in he win and heir effor earned kudos from Saumier. The line of Dubeau, (Derek) Foran and Powell played very well. They find a way o score for us. Tha line was responsible for he game-winning goal in game one wih 2:33 remaining in he cones. Powell scored wih Foran assising. Also gone, according o Saumier, are he days of individual accolades rumping he needs of he eam. The eamwork and defensive effor have been ramped up exponenially in he playoffs. All he guys are playing ogeher," said Saumier. We dominaed he las four games (agains Perh) as a eam. Goalie Michel Racico has also goen ho and Saumier credied him wih much of he eam's success. Saumier said Carleon Place's size and srengh will es he Poniacs They have very big boys," he quipped bu he coach has never sounded as confiden in his eam since aking over he reins midway hrough he year and sounded as hough Sunday's highlyraed cones was he sandard for his side now. I know wha we can do and I am no surprised (by he winning sreak), he said. I hink he series is going o be long bu I hink we can win. Please see PONTIACS on page wo Skaing inviaional coninues growh SHAWVILLE The annual Winer Inviaional is all abou highs and lows. Keri Beck of Shawville knows ha quie well. One of he Shawville Figure Skaing Club s op compeiive skaers, Beck was riding a srong sreak afer a gold and bronze medal performance in her firs wo evens on he firs day of compeiion. However, in her final even of he day he 12-year-old crashed hard. I was doing a double salchow and fell on my righ side, she said, huring her hip, shoulder and hand. Despie he fall, she amazingly sill pulled in he silver medal for ha paricular even, he preliminary solo, hough i marked he end of her compeiion and she was forced o wihdraw from Sunday s evens. I was really mad (Saurday), bu I sill won silver so ha was good, she said. The annual Shawville Figure Skaing Club s Winer Inviaional a he Shawville arena welcomed 11 skaing clubs from Easern Onario and Wesern Québec for his year s ediion. A esamen o is growh afer seven years, he 2008 version had enough boys enered for hree separae boys caegories, he firs ime here were enough males o have even a single caegory. Tha was so big for us, exclaimed enhusiasic Lyse Lacourse, even chairperson. We always waned o have boys evens, bu never had enough boys. The even s success has skyrockeed in he las wo years, growing from one o wo days and welcoming more clubs and skaers. Organizaionally, he even was seamless, as schedules were kep and everyhing wen as planned. Wih so many years a he helm, Lacourse said her commiee's experience has produced a op-class compeiion. You always learn somehing new, somehing o improve on," said Lacourse. This year s club champion, deermined by adding up medal winners from each club, was Asicou wih 85 poins. Hull finished second wih 53 poins and Shawville was hird wih 49 poins. The Shawville coningen of skaers was abou 30 srong wih compeiors from hroughou Poniac. The club has a oal of 58 skaers. Two skaers from Oer Lake and one from Danford Lake also compeed wih he Gaineau Valley skaing club. Please see SKATING on page wo Slaugherhouse plans changed; will be processing plan insead PONTIAC The consrucion of a slaugherhouse faciliy in Poniac is a lo farher off han originally planned. The Ouaouais Valley Fine Meas Co Operaive (OVFMC) recenly said hey plan on building a processing plan firs. The reason is prey eviden," said OVFMC Secreary Pa Kavanagh. Slaugherhouses across he province are running under capaciy and losing money, he said, and as a consequence i would be ill-advised o spend shareholders money on somehing ha migh no make money. As well, here is he possibiliy he slaugherhouse faciliy locaed in S- André-d Avellin (in he MRC Papineau) would suffer if anoher was buil so close. I was simply a quesion of building a plan ha would be direcly in compeiion wih anoher op of he line plan in he region, said Jeffrey MacHan, he regional direcor of he Québec Minisry of Economic Developmen. Please see ABBATOIR on page wo Exclusive inerview Murray reurns o coaching Team didn qui on Paddock: Luke Richardson LUKE MURPHY Equiy Spors PONTIAC The Oawa Senaors needed a change and hey go i in he form of a familiar face las week. Afer much debae, much anicipaion, he coaching swich has been made and Bryan Murray is back in a familiar role. Afer 64 games in he NHL regular season, Oawa Senaors head coach John Paddock has been fired, and replaced by general manager Murray, a role he held less han one year ago. He spoke o THE EQUITY in an exclusive inerview las week. We could ve made he move sooner, bu I was holding ou as long as I could. Since Chrismas I ve noiced he lack of energy, discipline, and an increase in bad habis in our club, Murray said over he phone on Friday afernoon, he reverence in his voice relaying his feelings. The coaching change came on Feb. 27, afer back-o-back shuou losses a he hands of he Torono Maple Leafs and Boson Bruins, respecively. I was a move ha some criics said was long overdue, and had been foreseen. Since Jan. 12, he Sens were , and looked dreadful. This is a eam who las season was hree wins away from a Sanley Cup Championship; a eam who d made few changes in he off-season and were expeced, once again, o be a srong conender o no only win he Easern Conference, bu he Sanley Cup. Media rumours claimed Paddock had los he respec of his players and he eam qui on him. Oawa naive and firs year Senaor defenseman Luke Richardson was quick o dismiss ha noion las week o THE EQUITY. Subconsciously, no player in his room qui on Coach Paddock. Trade ime is a difficul one on every player. You hear he rumours, you si back and wai for hings o happen raher han aking care of business yourself. We never los confidence in John. We los confidence in ourselves and he eam." A eam going hrough a slide is no unusual. In an 82 game schedule here are injuries, exhausion, personal slumps, and privae maers o overcome. Bu in his case he energy wasn here, he players were no compeing and here was a lack of commimen and hear, perhaps making changes ineviable. Murray believes he righ pieces are in place for a urnaround. Righ now, everybody is rying o score goals. I hink we need o focus on work ehic, working hard wihou he puck, and eam defense. Once hose problems are solved, hen we can work around i. In mos ciies, a eam siing in second place in he conference wouldn be an issue. Bu his is a eam ha sared he season 15-2, looking unbeaable, almos inhuman. This is a eam ha in Ocober had been compared o powerhouse Monreal Canadian eams of he 1970s by some analyss. Murray had chosen Paddock o be his successor as head coach. Murray recognized he had made a misake and needed o correc i. John Paddock is a good guy, a good friend, and i was a difficul decision, he said. Conroversy enveloped he eam midway hrough he season. The larges disracion arguably came in he form of goalender Ray Emery, who had been lae for pracices, involved in on and off ice incidens and complains by Emery himself ha Oawa police argeed him. 2 Page 2 TheEôi iy Wednesday, March 5, 2008 Poniacers win agriculure awards PONTIAC Two Poniacers were recenly awarded for heir conribuions o he developmen of he agriculure and agrifood indusry in he Ouaouais region Laura Palmer Thomas, a Clarendon residen, and Bob Griffin, a Calume Island residen, were honoured Feb. 23 during he 18h annual Soirée Acion- Valorisaion, which is organized by he Table de Conceraion Agroalimenaire de l Ouaouais (TCAO). This is he firs ime he Poniac has paricipaed in he awards and wo of hree awards were won by locals. I hink... i shows Poniac sill has improvemens o do in he diverse agriculure secor, bu he ones who are doing i are doing i righ, said Luc Dubois, a developmen officer wih he SADC Poniac. I hink (nex year) more Poniac businesses will aend, he awards because now hey see hey have a chance a winning Cedar Creek Farm owner Palmer Thomas was chosen from seven oher conesans for he CRÉO Sur les races d Érard-Seguin award, a bursary valued a $2,000. I was shocked, said Palmer Thomas. I had nohing prepared, no speech or anyhing. According o a press release, he award is presened o a new business ha is less han five years old ha has disinguished iself hrough dynamism and he qualiy of is business plan. I is sponsored by he Conference régionale des élus de l Ouaouais (CRÉO) Candidaes nominaed for he award were evaluaed on heir enrepren e u r i a 1 profile, he originaliy of heir business, he realism of heir goals as well as he business principles hey follow. I was jus hrilled o be nominaed, said Palmer Thomas. Cedar Creek Farm offers fresh rainbow and speckled rou ha visiors can fish for hemselves or hey can choose o purchase he fish smoked or freshly filleed. Cedar Creek Farm is he only fish farm in he Ouaouais region wih is own provincially inspeced slaugherhouse. We're saring o ge ino more good producion wih all our avenues open, said Palmer Thomas. Palmer Thomas said her plans for he money include compleing renovaions or purchasing more equipmen. Dubois sponsored Palmer Thomas for he award and said he hopes o arac more Poniac businesses nex year. I s opening up he area, he said. Ouaouais Valley Fine Meas Co-operaive (OVFMC) Presiden Bob Griffin was chosen from of hree oher conesans for he Érard-Seguin award, which, according o a press release, is presened o a person who has conribued o he promoion and developmen of agriculure and agrifood hrough achievemens and enhusiasm. I was a oal surprise, said Griffin. I m honoured ha I won i. Griffin was nominaed by his sponsors, MAPAQ and he CLD, for his effors wih he OVFMC, which hopes o see a processing faciliy for local meas consruced in Shawville. (The award) belongs o every oher producer in he Poniac, as far as I m concerned, said Griffin. Every producer has done a lo of work here wih his co-operaive. Griffin began farming dairy cows in 1979 and in 2002 he made he swich o beef. He said he fac Poniac ook home wo of hree awards a he gala is grea because i s abou ime people in he area are recognized for he effors hey have been puing ino he agriculure indusry. Close o 300 people aended he even, which was held a he Auberge e Club de Golf Heriage in Nore Dame de la Paix. Fire: Barn, shed, bailer all desroyed Coninued from page one The farm was originally owned by Keih Racine s faher, Arhur, whose wife, Doris, sill lives a he house on he propery. * She explained ha on Saurday, Keih Racine had gone o he garage o work on his wife s ruck bu he garage door had slipped off is racks. I He wen o ge someone o help repair he garage door and upon reurning noiced smoke filling he area. By he ime he ran ino he house o call 911 and reurned, i was a fullfledged blaze and he was only able o save he ruck and racor. I was an inferno. I was ou of conrol," said Keih. Boh Keih and Marc expressed sorrow abou he fire, especially considering how well hings had been recenly. My dad had buil up he farm for me so I could ake i over, explained Marc. The farm began under Arhur wih 10 head of cale bu grew over he years o is peak under Keih, wih 110. Since hen i seled o 85, bu Keih and Marc said hings had been seadily growing and improving and here was a lo of reason o hope for he fuure. Everyhing was going so good for us, said Marc. Keih esimaed i would cos him upwards of $60,000 o rebuild he pars of he farm ha were los on op of all he ools ha were los. He said he was no sure how he would sar o rebuild. Now i s jus one day a a ime for me, said Keih, fumbling wih some rubble beneah his foo. Tha s all you can do now. The fuure of he Racine farm, Marc, remained in good spiris, however, and realisic abou he work ahead: The pain is all over, now i s ime for he clean-up. Abbaoir: Too much compeiion feared Coninued from page one ; If building a slaugherhouse in Poniac has a negaive impac on he one in S-André-d Avellin, boh unis would have difficulies. 1 The projec will now see animals slaughered a he federally inspeced plan in S- André-d Avellin. The carcasses will be ransferred o he processing plan in Poniac. The mea would be cu, processed, packaged and disribued (in Poniac). Tha s my undersanding a he momen, said MacHan. However, Kavanagh insised a slaugherhouse was no enirely ou of he quesion, saying plans have jus changed slighly. There hasn been a change in our mission. The slaugherhouse and processing plan are par one and par wo, said Kanavagh. All we re doing now is reversing i. He said he processing plan would be buil firs, allowing ime for a markeing sudy, which would assess he feasibiliy of going ahead wih he consrucion of a slaugherhouse in he fuure. Poniacs: Coninued from page one If able o defea Carleon Place, he Junior B s will have heir second division championship in he pas hree years and jus is hird Overall, he projec would cos less o build, said MacHan. I would be easier o manage, ha way he co-op will be able o concenrae is effors on producing a Poniac-branded produc. OVFMC Presiden Bob Griffin firs menioned he change in plans o The Equiy las week bu did no wan o commen furher. MacHan said a his poin in ime i would be financially responsible for he OVFMC o concenrae solely on he markeing sudy. We wan o make sure we spend our producers money carefully, explained Kavanagh. The evenual consrucion of a slaugherhouse would depend on he volume of cale needed o feed a processing plan, he said, and he number needed depends on he markeing sudy. Given all hose facors we hough... we were going in he wrong direcion for he ime being, said Kavanagh. Members of he OvFMC me wih he miniser of agriculure las week o presen a brief on he saus of he projec so far. Through in he eam's 22-year hisory- Saumier said he's noiced a palpable exciemen wih he Poniac fans. In Carleon Place Kavanagh said hey are hoping for suppor, boh moral and financial, from he minisry. Abou he projec The faciliy is supposed o be buil on propery behind he Shawville Chrysler on Hwy Griffin said he OVFMC has pu a down paymen on he land bu have no compleely purchased i ye. He said he OVFMC has a sanding agreemen wih he owner, Tom Orr. I d never sell unil hey had every opporuniy o use (he land), said Orr. I s sill here for hem if hey wan i. Two years ago, when he OVFMC was founded, i was esimaed he slaugherhouse projec would cos an esimaed $2.4 million. The proposed slaugherhouse would provide cusom killing, cuing and wrapping and will conform o Kosher, Halal and organic sandards. Jewish and Muslim law have similar requiremens for heir meas in boh cases, animals canno be sunned before hey are killed and all of he animal s blood mus be drained by a o finals (Sunday), close o 50 or 60 people from Shawville were here, he said. Tha's grea, he crowd loves i and he playerslove i oo. Murray: Back o coaching Coninued from page one On he ice, Emery looked less han specacular. The fac ha Emery s counerpar, Marin Gerber, had no looked much beer made he goalending siuaion in Oawa appear unfavourable for a repea of las year's playoff performance. Bu i wasn he goalending alone. The offense, number one in he league, had spuered and scored only 13 goals in he eigh games prior o he coaching change. And he defense, one ime he backbone of his eam, had been inadequae. And John Paddock couldn urn i around. In Murray s firs game back as coach, he Senaors dropped a 3-1 decision o he Philadelphia Flyers. He said he ransiion back o he bench was difficul. (I fel) a lile ou of ouch. I ll ake some ime o ge my groove back, bu i ll ge beer. Bu being back on he ice oday, running pracice, being around he guys again was a grea feeling. Tha s wha I missed he mos. Bryan noed he amosphere in he dressing room: nervousness and a lack of confidence. Beer play and a few wins will bring a smile back o everyone s faces. Murray said he inends o remain he head coach for he res of he season, and hen conduc a lenghy search for a head coach during he off-season. Richardson noed he differences in he personaliies beween Paddock and Murray. Coach Paddock is a laid back, quie, reserved man. Bryan is a more powerful speaker, wih an auhoriaive personaliy who garners respec. Richardson admis he amosphere wih Murray around has already changed he dressing room. Bryan commands aenion. Everyone is on his oes when he s around. Bu Bryan is also grea a keeping he mood ligh wih a wisecrack or sarcasic remark. I s a wake up call for us all. Then Richardson added wih a chuckle, The big boss is around now. Murray is a proven winner behind he bench wih over 600 career wins and a record wih Oawa. He also showed las year ha he s capable of aking a eam o he finals. Bu pundis agree he has a lo of cleaning up o do if he expecs o reurn o he dance. quick, deep sli o he hroa. The business would be communiy-owned and operaed and would be buil o accommodae boh finished and cull cale as well as finished lambs, cull sheep, bison and farmed domesic deer. The slaugherhouse, which would employ sae of he ar echnology, would be able o process an esimaed 100 head per week wih he poenial o expand. The 728-page alas has Kaharine more han 900 coloured Flecher maps and 400 images of 286 species of breeding birds. And, despie his being an Onario-based alas, much informaion is perinen o Quebec as we share many species. Exensive voluneer research The research was conduced primarily by voluneers, more han 3,000 o be precise, who colleced 1.2 million individual bird records. Firs, a sysemaic grid was devised describing he province, from he islands of Lake Erie o lands surrounding Hudson s Bay. Moreover, here was exensive, unprece dened research done in he norhern secor of Onario, including he boreal fores. This is he second such alas produced. The firs was published in 1987 afer exensive research done in The comparison beween he wo daa ses show inriguing rends in bird populaions and disribuion which are well expressed by clear map sym bols. Species a risk Saring wih he bad news allows us o end on he beer. Many of you will no be sur prised ha grassland species such as he Norhern bobolink and aerial-foraging species such as he whip-poor-will are a risk. Precise reasons for populaions are no always idenifiable. For insance, abou he whip-poor-will, Alas conribuor Alex Mills wries, Declines may be aribuable o longer-erm, widespread changes in habia, such as inensive agriculure in he souh wes (of Onario) and naural fores succes sion farher norh. The Whip-poor-will is sill locally common in ideal habias such as pars of he Georgian Bay shoreline. The map shows a disurbing number of grey dos on he grid map of Souhern Onario, idenifying areas in which his bird was loca ed in he firs bu no second alas. Appendix 3, Proporional Change beween Alases for Each Species shows a 51 per cen decline beween recorded populaions for he whippoor-will. The Norhern bobolink shows a 28 per cen decline beween alases Many of you know his bird: he male is je black wih gold and whie on is back and wings, and i remains a fairly familiar species here. To me, is cheer ful, gurgling chorle is a happy reminder of ho summer days in grassy meadows. Densiies of bobolinks hroughou Onario are ighly linked wih areas of relaively lowinensiy agriculure, wries conribuor Marcel A. Gahbauer. The Good News Worrying rends are, happily, balanced by some good news. Populaions of rapors (birds of prey) such as he bald eagle and peregrine falcon are on he increase. In fac, for he for mer, wrier Ted (E.R.) Armsrong noes, Bald eagle recovery is well advanced in Onario, and his species is now firmly re-esablished as a op predaor in Onario s avian commu niy. As well, some species were confirmed breeders in he second alas and no he firs. Included in his lis are hoary redpolls - less frequen visiors o Poniac area winer bird feeders han heir relaives, common redpolls. Significan reason for decline Unsurprisingly, he Alas explains, During recen geological ime, probably he mos sig nifican disurbance of Onario s naural ecosysems, in exend frequency, and inensi y, is he human imprin on he land. The pri mary disurbance is o vegeaion, hrough selemen, agriculure, ransporaion and foresry; in some areas, landform disurbance due o mineral exracion, paricularly pis and quarries, is exensive enough o warran concern as well. This aleraion or removal of vegeaion affecs he supply of suiable habi a for wildlife, including birds. Even he sim ple presence of humans may disrup he nor mal animal behaviour paerns necessary for successful breeding and mainenance of sus ainable populaions. We are learning... Balanced agains he effec we human beings have upon wildlife, we should also cel ebrae he fac ha we are learning boh how we affec our fellow living creaures - and we are doing somehing abou i. Organizaions such as he Naure Conservancy of Canada are proecing wildlife habias (here in Poniac, Quebec, for insance, we have he lae Diane Aldred s beques of her land, whereby par of her home, Ghos Hill Farm became he Breckenridge conservaion area). Bu also, we have learned a grea deal abou agriculural pesicides such as DDT and have banned is use. This chemical was paricular ly responsible for he decline in rapor popu laions.... Bu need ongoing vigilance Wild birds need our help in various ways. Bird feeders, for example, no only assis wild birds in winer; recen sudies show ha cluch size (numbers of eggs) of fed birds is higher han birds ha do no benefi from being fed. Landowners can assis populaions by no draining welands, by leaving grass pasures uncu, and by leaving naural hedgerows of naive species of bushes, grass es and rees. Given he narrow disance of 300 meers (1,000 fee) beween Quyon and he Onario side, and he exisence of bedrock on boh sides of he Oawa River, he cos of building a bridge would no be overly expensive. The Poniac Bridge Commiee srongly believes along wih over 3,000 people, 11 MRC municipaliies, and a dozen local businesses in he Poniac ha such a bridge crossing, among oher hings, would: enable businesses o rans por heir goods, livesock, producs and maeri als o local markes on he Onario side, hus lowering operaing coss; arac invesmen in exising or new enerprises which would help generae jobs and revenue for he municipaliies; enice people o build homes and/or coages in he Poniac because of he abundance of land and lower propery axes and; make he region more accessible and help boos ourism. Already Quebec and he federal governmen have con ribued 1.58 million dollars o upgrading he roadbed beween Brisol and Fizroy Harbour. My hope is ha Pembroke and he province climb aboard by supporing any commuer pro posal Pembroke o Oawa. Think of i, day shopping excursions o Oawa wih perhaps a connecion o he airpor. No raffic and no parking fees in own. This is an opporuniy no o be missed. Whiewaer and Renfrew residens could cach he rain a Porage. MORE There is a quie and very dif feren kind of sruggle in progress around he world oday. Some people are no even aware he conflic exiss (or could care less) and ye i has been going on for some ime. I is unique in appear ance because he paricipans in his conflic carry no weapons of any sor and ye lives depend on i. J is a conflic ha some consider immoral, and he leas influenial par of he populaion are a he highes risk. People, cale and cars are locked in a srug gle over wha used o be he sole domain of he living. Cars now wan food. We never used o have an argumen wih anyhing mechanical abou food (oher han he occasional vending machine) bu imes have changed. Used o be ha people ae corn, cale ae com, people ae cale, a double win for people. Bu now, cars ea corn. We are in a compeiion for food wih our own ransporaion. Jus ask he Governor of California. Arnold is rying o do he righ hing concerning he environmen by burning bio diesel in his Hummer. I is absoluely, wihou quesion, necessary for him o drive a Hummer, afer all he has his image o mainain, and some kind of Hybrid vehicle ha go 70 miles o he gallon would no cu i for he Govenaor. So he drives somehing ha ges 25 miles o he gallon and i s bio-diesel fuel, so i s okay. European counries are already beginning o cancel subsidies for ehanol. I is now becoming more and mure eviden, ha so much energy is used o creae corn for ehanol ha i has no real advanage over oil. A gallon of ehanol in no way produces as much hrus as a gallon of oil. I akes a lo more ehanol o produce he ener gy o push your car en kilomeres. I was origi nally hough ha while corn was growing for his purpose, i would absorb an amoun of car bon dioxide, (as all rees do) equal o ha of wha was produced while planing and harves ing i, hus producing a zero carbon fooprin. This is no he case. The moraliy of feeding food o cars while peo ple around he world are sarving is a quesion ha mos drivers don care o give any consid eraion o. How have we managed o convince ourselves ha our cars need food, and ha need is greaer han ha of a sarving child? The U.S. adminisraion has hrown is full and enhusiasic suppor ino he ehanol for vehicles program. The overall resul of hese subsidies for corn producers is new found money for many farmers who are no ineresed in hearing abou he moraliy issues. And he boom line for he res of he world is inflaion. Things are going o cos more. I simply comes down o he age old law of supply and demand. When a farmer can earn more growing com, why should he or she grow somehing else? Many U.S. farmers are convering heir operaions from oher grains o corn due o he aforemen ioned subsidies. When culivaion of hese oher grains goes down i creaes upward pressure on heir price. Corn has hisorically been a source of nuriion for he leas forunae people on earh, and now hey have o sand in line behind a car. A loaf of bread a he local grocery sore coss more and will coninue o increase in price. Increases in he cos of feed for all livesock will eiher reduce he income of farmers involved in his par of agriculure,(by increasing heir coss) or increase he price of heir produc for you and me. Any demand sruggle for he same commodiy means a price increase for hose demanding he commodiy. Aid agencies are now begging for addiional funds because he cos of grains, heir primary source of food o be disribued o he poor has increased 70 percen in he las six years. While driving o Oawa several imes a week I don noice anybody slowing down. Norh American car makers spend millions convincing people hey need an SUV o pick up groceries down he sree, or a Hemi engine o ge o he burger sand ha much faser. These observaions should prove o us ha demand is (as are many drivers) a long way from slowing down. The harder we press on he acceleraor pedal he more expensive bread ges. I m no proud o admi, ha here have been imes 1 have alked o my car, alhough he lan guage used in hose conversaions will remain undisclosed. Cars wih he laes echnology now alk o us, ell us where o urn, ell us where we are, inform us if we re going o back ino somehing, can undersand our voice, and even park hem selves. Now hey wan our food. In he animal kingdom, food is reason enough o kill and is only shared wih he young, a mae, or a superior member in he herd, pride or pack. Our relaionship wih he auomobile has always been romanic, bu we re now beginning o rea cars like family, and beer han we rea some people.

OVERTIME I LUKE MURPHY Deadline deals discussion The NHL deadline garners aenion, so, I ve urned his opic ino a wo par series. This week, 111 discuss he oucome of he NHL rade deadline in he eyes of he Oawa Senaors, and nex week, in is coninuaion, well ake a look a he oher wo NHL clubs wih Poniac affiliaion he Philadelphia Flyers and Anaheim Ducks. A hree o clock on Tuesday, Feb. 26, he rade deadline ended. The dus has seled and he smoke has cleared. The Senaors acually made heir splash beforehand. A week before he rade deadline, Bryan Murray made, wha I believe o be, a blockbuser deal. He sen mobile defenseman Joe Corvo and young grinder Parick Eaves o he Carolina Hurricanes, in reurn for forward Coiy Sillman and defenseman Mike Commodore. This was a grea deal for Oawa, who added componens hey were sorely lacking: secondary scoring, oughness and solid defensive play. Bu afer ha, Bryan made very lile in he way of rades, only one o be precise. A he deadline, Oawa go veeran forward Marin Lapoine from he BlackHawks for a sixh round draf choice. 1 spoke wih Coach/GM Bryan Murray abou his deadline deals. Sillman, Commodore, and Lapoine bring Sanley cup championship experience o he club. Sillman is a 30 goal guy, a smar hockey player who can play on all hree lines. Commodore and Lapoine boh bring ough ness, leadership hey re boh fierce compeiors and are characer players wih a lo of gri. All hree players have Sanley Cup rings " Murray has some familiariy wih Lapoine i was Bryan who drafed Lapoine in The Sens were also in he marke for defenseman Brian Campbell, and forwards Marian Hossa and Vaclav Prospal, bu he asking price was oo high. We jus couldn afford o par wih he players hey waned in reurn. Bryan feels he Colorado Avalanche improved he mos from he rade deadline in acquiring Adam Fooe, and signing Peer Forsberg, o go wih an already solid eam. Murray hinks he majoriy of rades were made in he Wes because eams feel he Wes is sronger, and if hey win he conference, hey can win he cup. Bryan also noed he eams in he Wes are deeper, and can afford o make more deals. I m very disappoined he Oawa Senaors didn make more of a splash, didn do more o bolser heir lineup by he rade deadline basically add a goalie. Bu I m no a general manager, and I ve never been involved in NHL ransacions. I s hard o know who is available, and wha needs o be given up o acquire hose players. I m no in Bryan s shoes, and he s been around long enough o know wha deals are worh pulling he rigger on. Bu I m very concerned abou his eam. My opinion is as follows and you all know ha I m a pessimis. The Sens will never win a Sanley Cup wih heir goalending. Gerber and Emery have proved me righ since las year (neiher guy is a number one goalie). I have a hard ime seeing his eam making anoher run a he Sanley Cup wih he lack of secondary scoring hey possess. We ve seen eams shu down he Healey-Spezza-Alfreddson line, and no one else has sepped up. I know you ve heard his before (l said he same hing PONTIAC The Poniac Lions Aom 13 minor hockey eam played heir final game of he season las week wih a win of 4-1 agains he Draveurs des Gaineau. Mahew Curley scored wo goals and single goals were scored by Tyler Brady and Jared Murray. Assiss were had by Briggs Richardson and Yanick Morrissee. The win resuled in he Lions ending he season firs in heir division. The Lions were invied o ake par in he Esso minor hockey exhibiion game las week a he Scoiabank Place in Kanaa, Onario. The Lions ook on he Perh Lanark Blue Wings, winning wih a final score of 5-1. Morrissee scored four goals and Brady scored one. Assiss of he game wen o Murray and Malcolm las year before he Senaors wen on heir amazing playoff run and proved me wrong). Bu his is a differen season. Teams like New Jersey, Pisburgh, Monreal, and he New York Rangers have all improved immensely since las season. Maybe he coaching move, bringing Bryan back behind he bench, will be jus wha his eam needs o ligh a fire and urn he corner. They sill have a lo of games lef o ge back on rack, and I hope Bryan can help his eam find heir ideniy. This eam needs o find iself, find an ideniy, before he playoffs sar if hey wan o make anoher exciing run like las year. I hope hey can. Tha s my wo cens. Wha do you hink? Perraul said he money would allow Sheen o focus heir own budge on oher municipal roads, noing ha las year almos onequarer of he municipal budge was devoed o road upkeep I definiely helps us ou,* he said. Sheen is one of a senes of Poniac municipaliies o be graned a share of he gasoline excise lax under an agreemen beween he federal and Québec governmen. The 2005 agreemen provided funding specifically for infrasrucure projecs: drinking waer, roads and sewage. Gagnon said one of he main causes of he ax increase was fire proecion. Donaion Currenly, he Municipaliy of Chicheser parners is proecion services wih he municipaliies of Allumees Island and Walham, bu Gagnon said council is in he process of seing up a new policy ha deals wih how o share services in he fuure. There s a lo of negoiaions, ha will ake place on how o offse he coss of he fire proecion services, said Gagnon. There are a lo of unforeseen hings. The municipaliy also purchased a 2007 pumper ruck, which i hopes will be paid off nex year. We didn really have a pumper before," explained Gagnon. Anoher cause of he increase of he mill rae, according o Gagnon, was he change in he municipaliy s recycling services. The municipaliy ousourced recycling his year. They used o do i hemselves, bu have now hired a company o do i for hem. We changed recycling companies,* said Gagnon. We wen wih a company ou of Gaineau. We found i was less manpower for us. Gagnon said he feels he change is posiive for he communiy because i means less work for municipal workers. Wih he new company, C- Fer Ouaouais, he soring of recycled maerials will be done a he plan insead of in he municipaliy. In addiion, pickup will occur more frequenly, which also means less work for he municipaliy. I hink i s beer for he region, beer for he municipaliy, said Gagnon. In preparing your income ax for 2007 he individual wih he higher income would possibly allocae up o 50 per cen of heir pension income o he oher. This can resul in a significan reducion in income ax for he couple. Furhermore allocaing pension income could lower he axpayers ne income o below he $63,511 hreshold o preven he 15 per cen clawback of he Old Age Securiy. So wha pension income qualifies for he spliing? This depends upon your age. If you are 65 or older eligible pension income includes he following: Lifeime annuiy paymens received from a regisered pension plan (RPP), a regisered reiremen savings plan (RRSP) or a deferred profi-sharing plan and Paymens from a regisered reiremen income fund (RRIF). If you are under 65 eligible pension income includes he following: Lifeime annuiy paymens under a regisered pension plan (RPP), and Cerain oher paymens received as a resul of he deah of your spouse or common law parner. In order o ake advanage of pensions income spliing you will need o complee he Join Elecion Form T1032 (Join Elecion o Spli Pension Income) and include he allocaed amouns in your 2007 ax reurn. Each year hereafer municipaliy will focus mainly on compleing he fire safey cover plan, which all municipaliies mus do by he end of his year. The fire safey cover plan, which began in he year 2000, was implemened o reduce losses due o fire and increase he effeiveness of Québec s fire deparmens. One of he changes in he documen, which was 450 pages in is preliminary form, is ha firefighers who joined a deparmen afer he year 1998 are required o complee 120 hours of classroom learning followed by 120 hours of pracice. Municipaliies have unil Sepember 2008 o implemen all he changes in he reform. In addiion, Gagnon said he municipaliy plans on compleing a lo of road work.
