12 ~ ~ he Ob88ry8[ Mondly, Sepember 11, 1971 Tigers cook, rish sew Missouri s~fles shocked rish, 3-0 by Ray O'Brien Spora Edior The "fourh and one" siuaion is one of he mos exciing plays in fooball. is a ime when boheams dig in and show wha hey are made of. To he vicor of his rench war goes he spoils, and so i was Saurday afernoon as Missouri shu ou he rish 3-0. The big fourh down plays didn' come o he second half as he defending naional champs came ou looking for he easy score bu blew some early chances before he Tigers woke up and sared hiing people. lr j "We hough we could ge \Kris (Haines) deep behind heir :S«jcondary and ge he fas ouchdo~m." mumbled a sarry eyed Joe Monana. "We fel heir srengh w~s in heir seven men up fron," added Devine. "We came ou p.ssing because we fel if hey! were suscepible, i would be o he pass." f looked as hough Devine was righ on he opening play as igh end Nick Vehr broke free downfield bu an over-anxious Monana faded back ino a eammae and hen overhrew his open arge. Tha was jus one of many scoring Mke C llhoun end hen or 0 1m 1 dfenn did 1 com m end1ble Job by holding M lzzou o only hree poins on Slurdly. How ever, he rish offanu wu un1ble o den he scoreb01rd n he 1978 opener. [Phoo by Doug Chrlslen] ~, opporuniies ha Nore Dame was o pass up on his blisering day. When Monana finally go on arge his receivers fell vicim o sone hands as Ferguson and Condeni found he poao oo ho o handle on he nex drive. Devine's eam managed o keep coming as hey drove o he Tiger 18 yard-line before Monana fumbled he snap and Chris Garlich recovered. For Monana i was he beginning of a nighmare, while for Garlich i was he firs in a series of brillian plays. nercepions by Eric Wrigh and Garlich hauled rish drives in Missouri erriory, bu Garlich's real heroics came in he hird quarer on he firs of hree fourh and one-o-go siuaions. Early in he hird quarer, Monana ried o sneak for he wo fee needed on fourh down a he Tiger eleven yard line, bu Garlich sho in from his linebacker posiion and shu he gap for no gain. was more of he same momens laer afer Gerry Ellis fumbled he ball back o Jeff Weson and he Tigers found hemselves wih heir back agains he wall again. Those backs ben bu never broke when, on fourh and one from he one, Garlich land Kur Peerson hammered Vagas Ferguson for a hree-yard loss. "We really didn' care how hey moved he ball in he middle of he field," explained Garlich. "Bu we weren' going o give up any cheap ouchdowns. When Monana wen for i we were ready because we. knew hey had a endency o sneak on hose shor yard siuaions." Monana was jus as aware of Garlich's presence as he explained, "We wen for i because we had confidence in our guys up fron, bu on every ry here was a linebacker suffing he gap." The Nore Dame defense did some suffing of is own as Tiger quarerback Phil Bradley was inoperaive wih he pass due o a srong rush from ND's fron four, bu he scrappy sophomore kep hings alive wih his scrambling. The defense ha Devine was somewha suspec abou before he game was so ousanding ha i made Devine second guess his sraegy afer he game. " mus criicize myself for no realizing field goals win games," lamened Devine. "Our one field goal was no a classic (filmbled snap) bu we were in range several imes." Bu how do you explain how a eam can fail o ge one yard in A Sunning Defea ===================================================================================:==:=====================================================================================================================================================================================================================The They were sunned. Mos sa here, no eary eyed, bu sarry eyed in oal silence. They were no mad or hosile, jus sunned and confused. None was making excuses for losing or even giving explanaions for he game's oucome. They sincerely did no know wha wen wrong. When hey wach hose game films, hey will see he misakes bu i sill will no give a full explanaion or offer magic answers o he quesions reporers asked and hey could no answer. Afer you win en sraigh games and are awarded he naional championship, i is hard o come o he realizaion ha you could be ouplayed. The rish were no manhandled or dominaed bu hey were ouplayed when i couned. Missouri didn' win on a bomb or a breakaway run. They won on hiing, especially when hey had o. Dave Huffman was asked wha happened on hose shor yardage siuaions and he had no answer. When i was suggesed ha perhaps 11 guys jus physically and menally performed beer a cerain siuaions han he Nore Dame players he hough abou i. "Could ha have happened? Cerainly! don' know why no." Were he Nore Dame players ready for his game. Yes. Were hey overcofinden? Yes. The: sraegy used from he ouse indicaed hey were overconfiden. They weren' carelessly cocky, bu hey were overconfiden in siuaions where hey did no perform up o he coach's expecaions. From he firs play of he game hey wen o he air looking o knock ou he opponen early. Due o a combinaion of ND's inepiude and Missouri's fine play, his aggressive game plan was foiled. When i was finally decided ha he rish were going o have o play nose-o-nose on an even level wih he Tiger squad, Devine's eam wasn' quie ready. Devine was ready o blame he end resul on himself and while his liberal sraegy could be quesioned and every coach has o ake par of he blame, ', oach canno go ou on he field and clear ou a hree ries? "Give Missouri credi for coming up wih he big play. They had a big srong defensive uni. Bu he defense hey had given us on fourh down was he same one hey used on hird. We jus simply should have been able o handle i." f Devine didn' have he answers neiher did he normally ouspoken rish cener Dave Huffman. " jus have no idea of wha happened. 'm jus sunned righ now. Someimes you play well and uuo1e phooo ~e poqe 8 hey play beer." Sill, he rish weren' couned ou unil he very end as Monana and Pee Holohan became a wo man show giving he home fans he las bi of hope. The "Comeback Kid" had rebounded from a 4-17 firs half o hi 9-12 in he second su!_nza as he las pass of he game found Holohan a he 26 yard-line. The rish were couned ou on he nex play as Ferguson fumbled he ball away and even he mos opimisic fans began o leave afer Randy Harrison fumbled a pun wih 1:15 remaining. n a dead-quie ND locker room afer he game, none had excuses or answers, only a numb feeling persised. n he winning eam's locker room, many explanaions were given for he Tiger success. "When you ge down o i we jus conrolled he line of scrimmage," offered Garlich who wih senior linebacking mae Billy Bess was mos responsible for checking he rish offense. Bu he sasiics show ha ND acually won he bale of he lines, a leas on he firs o hird down plays. Nore Dame managed an edge in firs downs and compiled 173 and 151 yards rushing and passing respecively o he Tigers' 151 and 110 yard oals. The only saisics hey los was he mos elling--urnovers. The rish had five cosly miscues o Missouri's wo. Menal errors such as Kris Haines' personal foul afer aking he ball o he hree yard-line were cosly. "He said hrew an elbow, bu didn'," insised a morose Haines. The films clearly showed ha i wasn' an elbow bu a genle, ye defian, ap on he helme of ouspoken Russ Calabrese ha sen he rish back o he 18 yard-line. The rish will have o live wih his upse for wo weeks when a ough Michgan eam comes o Nore Dame Sadium. Missouri has lile ime o savor he win as hey prepare for Alabama nex Saurday. The vicory lifs he Tigers' career record o 2-1 agains ND., NOTES: he 3-0 shuou was he firs ime Nore Dame has failed o ge on he board in 132 games... he las ime he rish were blanked a home was in 1960 when hey los 21-0 o Michigan Sae... Ferguson opped he rish wih 87 yards on 19 carries while Holohan caugh five passes for 70 yards...!heavens gained 47 yards, leaving him 48 yards shy of Neil Worden's hird place oal on he all-ime Nore Dame rushing lis. Harriers romp Purdue by Don Schmid Spors Wrier Nore Dame's cross counry eam opened is 1978 dual mee season, crushing Purdue, 15-49, on Saurday a he Burke Memorial Golf Course. Senior co-capains Dennis VanderKraas and Seve Welch, along wih sophomore Pa Sullivan, led he harriers in a hree-way ie for firs place wih a ime of 25:17. The rish ook he nex hree spos as sophomore Charlie Fox finished wih a ime of 25:25, senior Joe Srohman finished a 25:41, and freshman Tony Haherly was clock- rish Eye defensive line. is oo much o ask for he offensive eam o gain one yard in hree differen ries? f you can' move he ball one yard when you have o, hen perhaps you don' deserve o win. There is no doub ha he rish suffered some bad breaks bu ha is a par of every game and when you haven' been shu ou in 132 games, i akes more han a few breaks o end a sreak like ha. The reason Dave Huffman and he offensive line did no know wha hi hem is because he guys ha made he difference in key siuaions were no lined up nose-o-nose wih hem. While a loud mouh named Russ Calabrese was geing all he aenion, he Missouri coaches knew ha if hey were going o win his game, wo seniors would have o ake charge. n he defensive alignmen he Tigers use, i is linebackers Billy Bess and Chris Garlich ha have o sop any runners ha ge pas he fron lines. "My defensive seniors (Bess, Garlich) are big play players," emphasized head coach Warren Powers. "They led he way and he res of he defense followed." n he long run i is he seady hard hiing player ha will make he difference and such was he case in his game as Garlilch and Bess led heir eam wih 11 ackles a piece. The infamous Russ Calabrese was credied wih one ackle and migh have been he goa if he didn' ge Kris Haines' goa when he go burned on a long pass play near he goal line. The rish will have wo weeks o prepare for Michigan, bu i isn' easy living for wo weeks wih a horn in your side. Neverheless, he pressure is lessened and here are en ough games lef. Joe Resic summed up he amosphere afer he game and where his eam had o go from here as he explained. "They ook chances and guessed righ. Maybe i wasn' mean o be. We're jus sunned. Bu 'm sill proud of our defense and of our enire eam. This is a proud bunch of guys and we have a very good eam." For now here's only more preparaion waiing. ed a 25:45. "'m exremely pleased ha we won, alhough know his eam is capable of much faser imes," saed coach Joe Piane afer he mee. He commened ha he relaively slow imes were due o he inense hea and humidiy on Saurday and he lack of compeiion faced from he Purdue runners. Welch added ha he rish were being especialy cauious abou peaking oo early in he season and pushing hemselves oo hard in only heir firs mee. Rounding ou he rish op seven was freshman Ed Bomber wih a ime of 25:52. Piane said, "One of he brigh spos of he mee was having Bomber and Haherly finish in he op seven. They adjused very well o he 'longer collegiae course:" The rish ook command from he sar of he race and did no le Purdue challenge seriously a any poin. Purdue's firs man finished behind Nore Dame's sixh man, Haherly, on a fla and dry Burke Course. The rish are looking forward o he NCAA cross counry Disric V Qualifiers in Minneapolis on November 11. According o Piane, Disric V looks o be one of he oughes disrics, as he rish will face radiionally srong eams such as Wisconsin, Michigan, ndiana, llinois, and Cenral Michigan. Piane noed ha he rish have a very good chance of making i ou of he disric. VanderKraas feels, "This eam definiely has he poenial o qualify and go undefeaed in all he dual mees." Nore Dame's nex dual mee is a Michigan Sae on Sepember 22. Piane looks for a lile more compeiion from Sae's harriers because hey radiionally run well on heir hilly home course, com-,.,pared o a fla course such as Nore Dame's Burke. Piane saed, "Michigan Sae has supposedly come off of a good recruiing year, bu hink we will win."
