4 vpr Pac Easer Sees Chris as Unknow by David Kleis Jesus Chris is boh he son of man and he son of God, and Jesus is a man "nobody knows.*' In Chaper 2 of John, verse 2, several Greeks are searching for Jesus; "we wish o see Jesus." Man oday has los he desire *o seek Jesus because Jesus has become a man, as Bruce Baron says in his provocaive book, whom "nobody knows." Who hen is Jesus, he man nobody knows? Jesus Chris is a man of sorrows. In Isaiah 53:3, he prophe speaks of our Lord as "a man of sorrows, and acquained wih grief." There is a well of boomless feeling in Jesus, for as Kahlil Gibran suggess in his porrayal Jesus: The Son of Man, o Him he lisping of a babe was no less han he cry of all mankind." This Jesus is he man who wep bierly, as John :35 indicaes. The shores verse recorded in Holy Wri, bu he longes recorded on human feeling. The sorrows of Jesus are no more movingly presened han by one of he Marys, in Gibran's porrai of Jesus: "His head was always high, and he flame of God was in his eyes. He was ofen sad, bu His sadness was enderness shown o hose in pain and comradeship given o he lonely. He was sad, ye i was a sadness ha would rise o he lips and : become a smile." This is Jesus Chris, a man of sorrows and grea sadness, whose head was always high, "and he flame of God was in His eyes." Jesus Chris is a man of power. Raymond Calkins in his book How Jesus Deal Wih Men, poins ou he power which Jesus sored wihin him: In Him was a deep foun of spiriual power which, ransmied o oher lives, gave hem fresh vialiy and reinvigoraed hem body and soul. When Jesus enered he arena of life, his power a once manifesed iself. Furhermore, Jesus had more han he power of healing. He had he power ha only he Son of God could have had, for, as Baron says, Jesus was a carpener, a man "who waxed srong... a leader who picked up 2 young men and creaed an organizaion ha won he world, ha in a few shor years would urn he world upside down." Jesus was also a man of silen power who during: he week of His rial and crucifixion never once was broken, hrough all he long orure of imprisonmen, cour rials, midnigh hearings and scourgings. Even Pilae fel i as he sood nex o he sraigh young man, inches aller han he, bronzed and hard and clean as he air of His loved mounain and lake, and from he lips of Pilae come hose words which reveal clearly he power of Jesus, 'Behold, he man/ Nahaniel speaks of Jesus' power in Gibran's porrai: They say ha Jesus of Nazareh was humble and meek, They say ha hough he was a Jus man and righeous, he was a weakling, and was ofen confounded by he srong and he powerful; and ha when He sood above men of auhoriy He was bu a lamb among lions. My hear is sickened by such mei I is he mighy carpener I would preach, and he mounainous spiri unconquerable. On he oher hand, Jesus Chris is a man of song. Of he glorious songs ha were voiced in he hear of Jesus, Rumanous speaks in Gibran's picure of "he manson." He was a poe. He saw for our eyes and heard for our ears, and our silen words were upon His lips; and His fingers ouched wha we could no feel. Ou of his hear here flew counless singing birds... He loved all hings of liveliness... and here was a deser in his silence and a garden in His speech, for in His voice here was laugher of hunder and he ears of rain, and he joyous dancing of rees in he wind." Jesus Chris is a man of youh. "I seek he youh of Jesus," says Melachi of Babylon, an asronomer in Gibran's mighy opus. He was born, lived, died, and was resurreced all in less han 35 years. He was only 2 when he asounded he men of learning iu he emple, as par of "his Faher's Business." The nex 8 years of Jesus' life are someimes referred o as "he 8 silen years." The laer years and days of Jesus' life are well known o everyone; however, Jesus died while sill in youh. Jesus never lived o have Dane's vision midway on life's journey of hree score en years ha he'd gone asray from he sraigh road, or awakening find himself in a dark wood, alone. Jesus never lived o haye Gauama's vision of "he middle way," received while mediaing beneah he Bo ree. Jesus Chris didn' live o be 35. Ye in he hree decades of life on earh, Jesus accomplished much more han did Dane or Gauama, for even in His youh Jesus was a man of power, and a man of feeling. In His person is he hear and soul of Chrisianiy, and wihou Him our Chrisian faih would no be. Finally, Jesus Chris is a man of vicory. He is he Way, he Truh, and he Life. He says in John's gospel, "I am he resurrecion and he life." He lives oday, having risen from he coldness of deah, as Rober Lowry's hymn says: "Deah canno keep his prey, Jesus my savior. He ore he bars away." Jesus Chris, by conquering deah, became a man of vicory. Having finished His work on earh. He ascended o he righ hand of God. Man canno work ou his own eernal life, bu can seek o live his earhly life beneah he shadow of he cross. As man learns o gaze in wonder upon he Cross he gains and mainains his srengh, for never was here such srengh as Jesus' while hanging from ha Roman gibbe of shame. In he words of he hymn: "Up from he grave He arose. Wih a mighy riumph o'er his foes; He arose a Vicor from he dark domain. And he lives forever wih His sains o reign. He arose! He arose! Hallelujah! Chris arose!" Jesus Chris arose a vicor from he dark domain of deah, ha we, His sons, migh have life. This is Jesus, manson and Godson, he man of Infinie characer. "Barabbas" Finds Chrisianiy Demands Tha Man Work o Undersand Humaniy..vl Chris Mocked by Soldiers GEORGES ROUAULT 932 Van Raale's Resauran Zeeland Complee Dinners Banques for BRING YOUR DATE, PARENTS, OR FRIENDS! (Special Dinners for 95c) Par Lagerkvis, "Barabbas/' (Banam, 49 pp. 50c), is he moving novel of he man chosen by he people, he man pardoned by he screaming crowd, a criminal, a man of violence, a man orn by dark and ormened luss who cried ou of his darkness "as hough he were speaking o i: o hee I deliver up my soul" This novel is a maserpiece, and is available in he Blue Key for 50c. by Rev. Lamber Ponsein "He was abou hiry, powerfully buil, wih a sallow complexion, a reddish beard and black hair. His eyebrows also were black, his eyes oo deep-se, as hough hey waned o hide. Under one of hem he had a deep scar ha was los o sigh in his beard. Bu a man's appearance is of lile consequence." Wih his descripion, Lagerkvis says ha his novel will ge below he surface. This is rue of his descripion of Chris also. This is no jus anoher rabbi. "There was nohing vigorous abou he fellow^ His body was lean and spindly, he arms slender as hough hey had never been pu o any use. A queer man. The beard was sparse and he ches quie hairless, like a boy's." Afer being booed ou of he prison, Barabbas wandered o he hill of Golgoha and wached he execuions. He was no here for any reason, excep ha he fel drawn by a power beyond his undersanding. From Golgoha he wen o he omb and wached hem bury he fellow in he cener, hough he really didn' know him. Barabbas had friends in own, one paricular friend. She was fa, diry, and quie ofen ipsy. From hese people he sough some informaion abou his man who had been crucified. They really didn' know much abou him, bu hey had heard abou one of his sories, abou arranging "a big feas, a wedding or somehing, bu no guess arrived, so hey had o go ou ino he srees and invie jus anybody, and all hey could ge were beggars and poor sarving wreches who scarcely had a rag o heir backs." They hough he mus have been one of hose who believed himself o be he Messiah. Bu his didn' make much sense. One didn' crucify a Messiah. This is an example of how he auhor had he sory of he Chris old o Barabbas. He mached his characers o his sories. Here are a few more examples. Barabbas himself had been o he cross and had seen he Chris, bu he sory of he love and grace of he Chris came from one who only recenly had denied him. To highligh he meaning of forgiveness and he exen of he denial, i was Barabbas who reminded Peer of he denial. A girl wih a harelip, who had been urned ou of her home and cursed, who was wihou friends excep for a few lepers, and who jus didn' seem o fi he picure of a disciple, winessed o he meaning of he gospel. Lagerkvis had her do his in a hick voice before an audience of Chrisian people. They were so self-conscious, hey were embarassed. (Afer all, his was S. John's by he Lake). The auhor raised a number of issues which are of a wenieh cenury naure. Le me menion one. Barabbas had a misress. She realized ha he had los his ineres in he passing affairs of life, including her, and all his had happened since he had become obsessed wih he crucified one. She now had a problem. How could she ge him back o normalcy? There was a long period in he life of Barabbas of which lile is known. The auhor surmises ha he may have spen some ime in he deser mediaing, or he may have gone back o his old business. I is known ha a he age of fify he was senenced o he Cyprian copper mines. Here, chained o an Armenian Chrisian named Sahak, he was shown somehing of wha i mean o be a follower of Chris. Bu Barabbas never fully undersood his, and he idea of a Chris who had o die on a cross didn' make sense o him. Barabbas was finally released from he mines, and wih a large number of slaves was brough o Rome, When he grea firie swep hrough -Rome, he ran hrough he srees seing firie o buildings, hoping in his way o serve he crucified one. His view of he Chris remained diafored. He was capured and crucified, and he las words heard from him came hrough he darkness as hough he were speaking o i, "To hee I deliver up my soul." 7 *. iwrn - ISope College anchor AJpril H IMS Debae On The Purpose Of Opus Pro Con by Jim Michmerhniren Some discussion has been and is aking place abou Opus. I is raher exciing. Unforunaely only he smalles par of he magnificen argumen will ever appear in prin; and his page, I suppose, represens an aemp on he par of he edior o give a rue picure of he course he argumen is aking and he issues involved. To ha purpose his aricle is devoed. There are wo issues. The firs concerns he aim, he goals, he purposes of a college lierary magazine; wha should hey be? The second is a quesion of fac; how well has his year's Opus saff fulfilled is duies (or aims)? The second of hese wo quesions, being he sor of quesion ha leads o passionae denunciaions and equally passionae defenses of specific people he edior and his saff is superficially an easier one o argue abou personaliies han ideas; consequenly he second quesion has prey much obscured he firs.. : Every college lierary magazine mus ideally fulfill wo funcions. On he one hand i mus encourage such alen as i finds in he suden body, and on he oher i mus presen o he public he bes ha is wrien by is suden body. These wo funcions someimes clash; if a suden chooses o be inconsolably discouraged when his work is no prined in Opus... hen wha?. Mos of he unpublished sudens I have alked o ook heir rejecion by Opus as a personal affron. They were no aware of heir feelings sufficienly o make his explici; i ook i always akes he form of asking "Wha does Jones (who was prined) have ha I don' have?" Or, even more misguided, "Who do hey (he Opus saff) hink hey are, saying ha Jones has somehing I don' have?" All of his from he mere accepance or rejecion of a poem! Poery is personal bu no ha personal. Two principles closely relaed o he wo funcions described above govern he selecion of maerial for Opus. One is he principle ha Opus should be represenaive, he oher ha i should be he bes. Exclusive adherence o eiher principle would be a mockery. In he former case one would have only o submi a given number of poems in order o be assured of a page in Opus, regardless of qualiy. I would be enough simply ha one wroe. In he laer case here would be no Opus a all. Every Opus saff, every year, has discussed his problem. No wo saffs have come o precisely he same conclusion. I have saed he case concerning Opus. Wha abou he suggesion ha selecion of maerial be done by members of he faculy of anoher college? One commen is obvious such a mehod would cerainly do lile o encourage hose shrinking violes who are discouraged by auhoriy of any sor. I migh pu a sop o argumens abou wha should or should no have been prined; bu ha would be a loss, no a gain. I should say exaggeraing, o be sure, bu only for he sake of a poin oo negleced in his whole argumen Tha Opus exiss in order o cause some argumen abou criical sandards. The dilemma ha he "con" side faces, i seems o me, is his: eiher heir argumen mus reduce iself o assering ha some poems which were no prined should have been, or else heir argumen is no a all abou Opus bu abou he personaliies of he saff. If heir posiion is he laer, hen I can find some poins for agreemen wih hem, bu mus poin ou ha a discussion of personaliies has no place in he anchor; if heir posiion is he former, hen hey are simply opposing heir criical abiliy o ha of he members of he saff, who were, las fall, eleced by an open group of campus wriers, precisely on he basis of heir criical discernmen. I was mediaing upon he process of illusion one day, when here came and sa beside me a raher unusual looking fellow and we began in conversaion. "Who are you?" I asked. "Guess," he snickered. "The angel Gabriel," said I, since I was mediaing on such hings. > "Prey close," he said. "Now," I proceeded, "since we have se he general background, and I am vaguely aware of approximaely who you are, may I ask you a raher personal quesion?" I looked a he angel; he nodded absenly and grinned, so I coninued: "Tell me, sir, if I may be so bold as o obrude upon he mos divine of secres; ell me if..." And I began o blush as I asked, "... Tell me if here is such a sin as dancing?" The unusual fellow scrached around for a momen on his lef side, hen came up wih he mos supendous scroll. One would never have guessed he had i concealed on his person. He hen cleared his hroa, looked a me wih a very officious eye, cleared his hroa again as he spun open he manuscrip, and inoned in a slighly fla alo voice as follows: "Aricle 24, Secion 642, Subsecion 4, Subjec 00932: Dancing. Ahem! By he ruling of he Heavenly Disric Cour, Sae of Grace, in he year 0 Inf., i is now esablished ha dancing is a relaive hing. I is a pale bine background wih red sreaks. There are a few Opuses for sudens in he Blue Key Book Sore. by David Kleis Opus osensibly represens he fines arisic creaions, verbal, visual and musical, of Hope College. I was a leas iniiaed and suppored wih his as is cenral purpose, bu alas, i fails quie miserably. Le i be clearly undersood, however, ha here are some unique arisic creaions (which show boh imaginaion and work) o be found wihin he covers of he 963 Opus. Opus means "work" or has his as one of is meanings, which is somehing ha he ediorial board should be reminded of. Therefore, here are several suggesions which are dedicaed o hose unrecognized ariss of Hope College who should be and will be recognized as poes, composers and ariss in due ime; sooner perhaps han we realize. Firs, if he board of ediors wishes o publish a creaive ars Do Pine Needles in Pine Grove Dance? by Lew Scudder der Secion 82 of las year's ruling in paricular." He paused majesically. I held up my hand o ask him if he would kindly amplify, in foo-noe, his allusions; bu he negleced o yield he plaform. "Since exenuaing circumsances are many and various he relevancies o his poin in quesion mus necessarily remain enigmaic ill such ime as he Lord chooses o concern himself wih his problem; and since such a ime is no ye come, he jurisdicion of morals in his caegory are lef in he unfailing hands of Gummafell, Capain, Fifh Division, D.A.F.. #.. "So," I said, "your name is Gummafell?" "Tha's righ," he said. "How'd you come up wih a name like ha?" I asked. He leaned over and whispered in my ear and I blushed. "Terribly sorry abou ha," I said. "Oh, ha's all righ," he said happily. "I'm no he only one." "Glad o hear ha," I said, much relieved. "Bu, now, since you are appoined moral arbier on his subjec, could you ell me which, how, and wha exacly make up he exenuaing circumsances?" "Ask me a quesion," he said. "I jus did," I said, raher aken aback. "Ask me anoher, hen. I jus love being asked quesions. Ask me anyhing, anyhing a all." Well, really, I didn' see much poin in ha so I hough I'd begin wih a "yes" and "no" quesioning period followed by a series of muliple guess, and ended wih hree essay quesions beginning wih he fall of man and ending wih he presen (daes included). "Is he fox-ro wrong?" I began. He shook his head and smiled benignly. "Is he... ah... walz a sin?" " "No," he smiled. "Is he... unwn-m #.. ango?" "Um-uh!" He shook his head again. "Then he Samba?" "Nope." "The bear-hug, he pumphandle, he shuffle?" He shook his head a all and seemed o be enjoying himself immensely. I frankly was running ou of caegories of he dance. I bi my lip and pondered. "Go on, go on. You haven' nearly finished," he urged. Then I was hi by a flash. My head swam, my eyes ingled in my head, my big oe iched: "Tell me," I asked hasily, "... Tell me, good Gummafell, wha would be your ruling on he.. The... THE..." "Yes?... YES?... YES?..." echoed Gummafell. "Tell me wha you hink of he... The... THE..," "Go on, say i! Ou wih i!" he shoued. "THE TWIST!!"! screamed. There was dead silence. I looked a Gummafell and saw him urn red hen purple, green hen orange, hen brown; and brown he sayed. I was really quie a display of angelic prowess. Then he opened his mouh, and hrew his hands up ino he air. I depended on his lip. The world seemed spiraling above our heads, here was a errific clanging in he air... and I found myself saring breahlessly ino he kno-hole of an old pine which looked remarkably like Gummafell. I heard a lile snicker; ha was all. Now, somewhere on our campus here sands ha pine, he laes version of he ree of good and evil, he new incarnaion of knowledge. However, his shouldn' be published under he ile of Opus or wih college money. This would be enirely fallacious, as i has been for much oo long. Four years ago he complain by many sudens was ha he Opus was he medium for he creaive effors of a single individual. Now four years laer he complain is he same, and jusifiably o a cerain exen. Opus has become a medium for six individuals, wih a surprising dearh of creaive effor from he highly respeced Tom Werge. Second, and much more significan, is he whole concep of "working" o encourage and develop individual ariss, especally poes who show promise. Far oo many poenially fine poes have been sulified by Opus. Simulaion, even if i's merely en minues shared over a cup of coffee, is beer ha sulificaion. Opus mus become he crucible ino which is poured creaive ars, and ou of which is seleced, osensibly a random, hose selecions which represen he fines ar a Hope College. Third is his whole concep of "working" ou crieria on which he creaive selecions are judged and seleced. Tangenial o his is he follow-up of "working" ou a procedure by which each conribuor, wheher his creaion is acceped or no, is no only given noificaion bu also a criical saemen wih reasons for is accepance or nonaccepance. Opus hasn' reached he level of Saurday Review, nor has i he auhoriy nor adroiness of John Ciardi of scanning briefly a person's creaion and promply for some inuiive reason, ossing i ino a wasebaske, or burying i beneah he millishees of meaningful poery and prose ha delighfully defies "meaning." If Opus is produced in concurrence wih he fesival nex year, i could foser suden creaiviy by offering awards. Insead of spending over $200 on Ciardi, appropriae only $600 and offer moneary rewards for poery, prose, music or ar. Opus and he fesival migh really encourage creaiviy from he sudens insead of "culure from he op." Finally, he mehod of selecing and judging he creaive work of Hope College's ariss as noed las issue should no be done by conribuing ariss or arisans, whoever and whaever hey migh be and do. Humaniy is fallible. So is Opus. I is abou ime ha Opus began o "work," no o play a e- ing "saff" members of he creaive ars publicaion of Hope College. I's no so much ha his year's Opus lacks in auhenic and (dare I say i) "meaningful ' ar, as i is ha Opus could be so much more auhenic and meaningful. (This is a challenge, no a criique.) *
