Wha was ineresing abou he whole inciden was ha mos people mehodically followed he man's direcions, rushed o he new gae assignmen, and waied for anoher wo hours as he airline sored ou he confusion. There was no hough o he conradicion "hurry up and wai". for i seems o be a par of everyday life. People acually sood for he enire wo hours hoping ha being in he fron of he line would be beer han being las. My philosophy was ha he plane could no leave unil he las person was aboard anyway, so I avoided he lines and se o finish some reading. I would be a ough week, I hough, if I didn' ge work done; so I slipped ino a "crisis prevenion" frame of mind. In my case I couldn' avoid he curren crisis, bu I was able o avoid los of sress for he nex week. These pas few weekends I have had he opporuniy o observe he significance of he phrase "hurry up and wai" in sociey. We are all in a hurry when i comes o daily maers and ge so wrapped up in our schedules ha we fail o ake a look a "he big picure" and wha happens down he road. This menaliy probably developed when he firs line ever formed, hereby showing ha he firs line was he mark of civilizaion's rue beginning. We all operae under deadlines and are accusomed o rushing a he las minue o do wha could have and should have been done on a more mehodical basis. No, I'm no preach- ing; yes, I am guily of slipping ino he crisis menaliy a imes. The adage abou he oroise and he hare probably has been around for quie some ime -he idea being o make progress bu o do i a a consisen pace. Unforunaely, like many old adages, he sories are old bu no followed. I is clear we all oo ofen run wildly oward he "end resul" wihou considering how we are going o ge here and wihou pacing ourselves accordingly. Too ofen we reach a goal no knowing exacly wha we have accomplished and more ofen fall away from he original purpose wihou even coming near i. Examples can be found everywhere. Asronau Neil Armsrong made "a small sep for man" when he walked on he moon, bu only afer many oher smaller seps were made in building he space program. However, i seems as if even NASA began o ake hose Sco Bearby Viewpoin Edior exra seps for graned and forgo his philosophy. While i is rue ha someimes rushing is unavoidable and necessary, as he Challenger disaser proved, i can also be dangerous. The crisis aiude which we all carry no only adds exra sress bu breeds a false sense of securiy. " Oh, he siuaion will ake care of iself," we say. Unforunaely, his is no rue. One only needs o ake a quick rip o he seel mills of Norhwes Indiana. Las summer boh union and managemen officials were quoed as saying he crisis over closing subsanial porions of he mills could no be avoided. Wha hey didn' menion was ha he crisis had been looming for many years. Over he years, hey rushed o deal wih he lile problems bu bu never ackled he big ones. By he ime boh sides realized he siuaion would no ake care of iself and ha cooperaion was in order, i was oo lae. We have been bred ino puing hings off unil he las minue. I even pu his aricle off unil he deadline approached. There are already oo many deadlines o mee and problems o solve for us o add "hurrying up and waiing" o he lis. Bu as long as we ackle his menaliy slowly bu surely, he problem will ake care of iself. The Time College Achievemen Awards, which recognize he naion's ousanding college sudens, are looking for 100 juniors who excel in academics and exracurricular aciviies. The girl on screen is ipoeing nervously hrough he abandoned house, enaively calling her friend's name. We know ha her friend was unceremoniously beheaded in he las scene bu our hapless heroine does no. She urns a a sligh sound behind her and backs away from i slowly (never, never back away from anyhing if you should find yourself in an abandoned house) and a owering masked figure wielding a larger han average bucher knife leaps a her from he close. Maura Mandyck frankly, my dear Everyone screams. You hrow your remaining popcorn ino he air, having los mos of i already during he beheading. And a good ime is had by all. Horror films are big business. "The Fly," in which Jeff Goldblum is urned Norheas neighbors wan o preserve area Dear Edior: An Open Leer o Nore Dame Sudens from he Norheas Neighborhood: There has been a lo of publiciy laely abou Nore Dame sudens and he Norheas Neighborhood. We waned o wrie his leer and le you know how we really feel abou sudens in he neighborhood. Many of us have lived in he Norheas Neighborhood mos of our lives. We've invesed in our homes and raised our families here. There are all kinds of people in he Norheas Neighborhood-- blacks, Ialians, Jamaicans, elderly people, sudens and Nore Dame faculy and saff. We have all lived ogeher over he years. We're proud of he neighborhood and wan he neighborhood o look nice. Over he years, more sudens have moved ino he neighborhood. We don' have problems wih all sudens - we wan o welcome you o he neighborhood. Some sudens have caused problems for us. We don' like sudens leaving rash all over he sree and decoraing our fron yards wih beer ino wha Newsweek calls "he mos sickening beas his side of 'The Blob,' " is making money in he same fashion as "Halloween" and "Friday he 13h." Oddly enough, people will pay money o be errified. Sephen King will aes ha he fearin-prin marke is jus as booming as ear-on-celluloid. The man who creaes killer cars, vampire colonies and axeswinging crazies is a muli-millionaire. Jus las Friday, his enire naion paid ribue o how much fun i is o be scared. The bes house in he neighborhood on Halloween is always he one wih eerie lighing, spooky soundeffecs and pleny of cobwebs. Bu wha is harder o undersand is why we like o be scared. Why would ordinarily sane individuals seek ou siuaions ha cause heir hears o pound and heir somachs o churn? Par of he answer may be ha seeing he error of oher people's lives makes our own seem ha much safer and cozier. As a friend of mine explained, ''Afer seeing a really gruesome horror cans. Some landlords use suden renals o jusify a "no mainenance" policy and he houses end up looking bad. We don' like having paries of 500 or more people nex door. Sudens who ignore he influence of heir acions on he neighborhood are discrediing he oher Nore Dame sudens who are good neighbors. Sudens who cause problems are huring he neighborhood. I cerainly know beer han o hang around a summer camp where he counselors are disappearing one by one, and you won' cach me aking a shower a he Baes Moel eiher. Sephen King has some houghs on he subjec. In an inerview wih "Time," Oc. 6, he explains, "There is a par of us ha needs o vicariously exorcise he darker side of our feelings." Apparenly every one of us is secrely a creaure ha salks he nigh wih a repressed desire o slaugher innocens, ea human flesh or a he very leas, hang ou in cemeeries. I is only hrough books and movies ha we are able o funcion in a sociey where homocide is generally frowned upon. I have a heory of my own. People Dear Edior: Professor Jay P. Dolan's leer (Oc. 16) meris commen. (Carberrywachers will recognize ha "meris commen" is naugh bu a euphemism for "mued ourage"). Dolan's leer is a disgrace; and insul o hose of us who served in wars o provide and ensure he very peace which now permis he Dolan's of his world he freedom o uer heir simplisic dogmas--and uer hem in English. Had my generaion been persuaded by Dolan's nonsense, The Observer would now be published in German wih a Japanese imprimaur. Ye here is good news. Dolan informs us ha his "Caholic educaion" augh him "in good Thomisic logic ha war and peace, much like ho and cold, love and hae, were muually exclusive." Thus do our good sudens experience heir iniiaion ino ha realm prescribed by many of our residen heologians and. philosophers- Thomism. We are indebed o Dolan for inroducing reference o a body of knowledge graned o civilizaion by S. Thomas Aquinas--The Angelic Docor, as Rome declared. (Bu hen again, wha does Rome know of heology or heologians, as he Reverend McBrien recenly opened in he N.Y. Times). The ROTC? Away wih i, Dolan declares. Fine. Devoid of universiy/college educaed officers, Congress like o be scared, bu only in conrolled siuaions. If he movie is genuinely oo scary you can leave, and if he book is oo groesque you can oss i aside. Every ime, however, ha we si or remble hrough somehing frighening we affirm ha we can be really scared and survive i. And he nex ime we mus walk down a dark sree alone or perhaps face a paricularly. wrahful professor, we recognize boh he sympoms of fear and he fac ha hey will go away. Tha is why a group of us wen o he Carroll Hauned House on Saurday hoping for bas and spiders and vampire-filled coffins. The fac ha i was closed before our arrival dampened our enhusiasm only slighly. We simply ook he darkes pah home, gleefully imagining a bloodhirsy lunaic behind every ree. Recognizing he need for a permanen council home, he Knighs esablished a building fund in The Grea Depression lef he council wih only $4000 In Is reasury and In 1934, Mr. Ell J. According o Tom Darrow, a senior accouning major from Wisconsin and a four year member of he K. of C., members of he Council deermine for hemselves he kinds of projecs in which hey wan he Council o be involved. Wih all of he oher pressures and demands upon Nore Dame sudens, why should hey wan o spend ime on hese projecs? The Knighs of Columbus was founded In 1882 In New Haven, Conn. by Faher Michael J. McGivney, a Roman Caholic pries. Even hough we were alking, laughing and being boiserous, we did no sick ou like sore humbs as we were accusomed o. Savoring each sausage and Ice cube, we' finally relaxed. Some people may say I was crazy o come o England since we are paricipaing In his year abroad o Jearn French and experience he French way of life. I undersand ha reasoning and hink I's a logical poin. However, my emoional counerpoin was more Imporan a he ime. The firs couple of weeks In Angers were really ough for me. I waned o ge o know all of he sudens from differen counies bu I couldn'. The language barrier had buil a wall around me and every ime I knocked away one brick. I urned around and anoher had replaced i. I was discouraged, frusraed, lonely and downrigh depressed. Life moved along hough and I wen wih i. Afer eaing lunch one day wih a young man from Germany and never once slipping Ino English, I was prey excied. "Ok." I hough. "his really Is going o work." Classes wen well, I go o know a lo of grea people, and I became closer wih hose In he Nore Dame group. I go used o llllng up on bread and going o he pos office was a breeze. Brian O'Gara feaures Collins and Iems coninued from page 12 has no real cure unless hese disrespecful eams ge ou of he rankings so everyone doesn' ge confused. You know he kind. Teams like Souh Carolina, which is also inclined o be called USC. The nerve. Or how abou hose Horned Frogs of Texas Chrisian Universiy going ou and grabbing TCU as is frequenly-used ile? TCU jus doesp' flow like an abbreviaion should. Bu ha's no half as bad as UTEP for he Universiy of Texas-El Paso. The convenience is enicing, bu he line mus be drawn somewhere. The wors problem occurs when wo eams have he same abbreviaion and are equally well-known schools. Who is he real OSU? Is i Ohio Sae or is i Oregon Sae? Or Oklahoma Sae? Is OU a reference o Ohio Universiy or o Oklahoma? If several obsceniies follow i is probably a reference o Jimmy Johnson. Indiana and Illinois have worked ou a workable soluion o a possible problem of reference is his area. Wih Indiana aking he handle IU and Illinois assuming he ile U of I, he wo are no ofen confused. Bu i can' be his easy everywhere. Is Arkansas referred o as UA or AU or U of A? Which does Alabama use? How abou Auburn? Or Arizona for ha maer? This problem is a very perplexing one indeed. One way o preven some of he confusion would be o allow he eam ranked highes he righ o use he iniials. The res would be forced o use he full name. This would make every eam earn is privilege o use a shorened version of is name. This is no o say ha I'm oally agains he use of iniials for universiies and heir eams. They serve a purpose. How else could we chan "We are ND" a our games? I also helps eams, such as Oklahoma, fi heir names on heir helmes. I even helps oher cue lile songs abou he eams o be formed. I's almos essenial now if you wan o play in college." Kahy Cunningham, he oher. freshman on he volleyball eam, also is a produc of Illinois club volleyball. McNamara akes award BOSTON - This ime, John McNamara won a close cones. Eigh days afer his Boson Red Sox were edged by he New York Mes in he sevenh game of he World Series, McNamara scored a narrow vicory yeserday o become American League Manager of he Year. "Tha was he furhes hing from my mind," he said of he award. "I would have raher had a win and le somebody else be manager of he year." Bu he win didn' come in he sixh or sevenh games of he World Series, even hough Boson led boh, and some of McNamara's decisions were quesioned. "You're going o be subjec o second-guessers, bu you say wih wha go you here," he said a a news conference. "Tha's wha we did." McNamara, 54, is he man who go he Red Sox o wihin one srike of he 1986 world championship afer hey finished in fifh place in he American League Eas in Tha accomplishmen brough him he firs manager of he year award in his 13 seasons a he helm of a major league eam. Coincidenly, he wo faced each oher in club play ofen. Does he success of he Irish volleyball eam, which was 9-14 a his poin las season, surprise Collins? "We're (he eam) no surprised a all," she says. "We had hoped o be beer, bu we're no disappoined. We knew in he pre-season ha we had a good eam." Collins admis ha he adjusmen o college life as a freshman suden and a varsiy ahelee is a ough one. "You're jus rying o ge ino he swing of hings and you're already behind," SQe says, as a nearly-compleed paper sis in he ypewrier a her desk. Despie her quick success on he cour, Collins looks for ways o improve her performance for he Irish. "I've go o work on no giving away my ses," she says. "The middle blocker ries o read he seer and where he ball is going. I've go o ry o hold he middle blocker in he middle when I se ouside so he hier is going up agains one blocker, no wo. When he hier is one-on-one wih a blocker, hey'll probably ge he kill." Jus anoher way for he Irish o pick up he key poins. I's easy o see ha Collins has high aspiraions for herself and for he eam, and her play indisee SEITER, page 9 Remaining Irish foes ake he shorcu Nore Dame begins he abbreviaed porion of is schedule his weekend agains Souhern Mehodis. I's no he abbreviaed par because of is breviy, bu because of he eams he Irish will face, such as SMU, LSU and USC, wih Penn Sae hrown in o keep i from geing ou of hand. Nore Dame head coach Lou Holz does no really look forward o aking on he boys of shorened-version-name fame. Rick Riebrock Irish Iems "I've always been a lile bi leery of hose schools wih he leer abbreviaions," Holz says. "They always seem o be prey good." Tha sounds similar o raed eams' coaches alking abou firs-round opponens ha have a hyphen in hem in he NCAA baskeball ournamen every year. Bu he Irish have held heir own agains he mighy abbreviaed and hyphenaed schools. They are 2-0 agains UCLA, agains USC, 1-0 versus TCU, 8-3 agains SMU and 3-2 agains LSU. Tha gives hem a oal of 44 wins and 28 losses agains he mos noable enries in he naion's alphabe soup bowl. The hing abou hese abbreviaions for he schools is ha he abbreviaion is easier o use when referring o he schools han he name of he universiy iself.
