One sicky issue ha has been dorman for a while a Nore Dame is he quesion of wheher or no he campus should be wired for cable elevision recepion. To he bes of our knowledge, only wo dorms on campus currenly are equipped wih an inegraed cable sysem: Flanner and Grace. A he ime of heir onsrucion in he lae 60s, he possibiliies presened by cable were apparenly very much on he mind of adminisraors and he archiecs. However, here are wo prime consideraions which seem o have cooled ha enhusiasm. Firs, here is he cos facor. Wiring each dorm room or suie in each hall a Nore Dame would be a very cosly proposiion. Secondly. and more inangible in naure, is he concern among some members of he adminisraion ha access o he plehora of cable saions and pay TV alernaives would serve as a serious disracion o sudens' work and sudy habis. Boh of hese concerns are well warraned, so why resurrec a seemingly dead issue? is essenial ha we recognize he fac ha our sociery is on he hreshold of revoluionary chnological changes - mos of which cener around he home elevision se and he personal compuer. The days of simply siing in fron of he "boob ube" and mindlessly absorbing sicoms and game shows are dying a quick deah for many Americans who are cashing in on he benefis of he cable revoluion. Tweny-four hour spors and news neworks are already well esablished, and in some es ciies, households are now receiving radiinal newspaper informaion via he elevision se insead of on he The_Obs.er.~er John McGrah Edior in Chief nside Friday formed by he cable company. On oher sipulaion in any poenial franchise agreemen would call for he provision of a leas one public access channel exclusively for he Nore Dame campus. This is he key in addressing he sudy disracion concern. This public access channel would serve wo purposes - boh educaional. Firs, programming on his channel could consis of special class-relaed on-air review session~. One very popular "show" would undoubedly be a Thursday nigh chemisry review session in preparaion for Friday's "Emil." Close o one housand freshmen are enrolled in his class, and even if a fracion of he oal uned in, here would sill be a subsanial number of sudens deriving educaional T"" ""1 benefi from he sysem. The G-(lO) H()fM~ sessions could be presided cia~ ~L( E over by eaching or graduae ~ cafsl~ emf! assisans, or even advanced "-" sudens in he class. Oher possible candidaes for air ime consideraion on he public access channel could be Economics 23 and boh classes wih over 700 sudens radiionally enrolled. Organic chemisry, accouning, engineering, and many oher large classes could also be covered in reviews or updae pogramming in a manner similar o ha proposed for freshmen chemisry. The oher educaional benefi o be derived from a suden access channel would accrue in he field of communicaion sudies. Access o even he modes faciliies of proposed channel would enhance he insrucion sudens now doorsep hrough experimenal arrangemens wih heir ciy newspaper. Columbus Ohio is he mos sriking example of he possibiliies of cable. n ha ciy, cable subscribers are offered a sysem known as QUBE which in essence is a wo-way elevision hookup in which viewers can respond insananeously o public opinion polls, rivia quesions, and oher queries. Banking and reailing funcions are also being performed righ now in es households - all via he elevision cable hookup. Bu wha does cable have o offer Nore Dame and could he benefis of is conribuion be enough o ouweigh he negaive aspecs menioned above? We should a leas look a he possibiliies before rejecing he concep ou of hand. n addressing he firs concern, cos, he possibiliy of reaching an insallaion arrangemen wih poenial cable companies should be invesigaed. n reurn for graning a franchise o one of he poenial bidding firms, he Universiy could demand free or cu-rae insallaion charges. No addiional bureaucracy would be needed by he Universiy because he decision o dramaically improve recpion - receive cable service or no would be up o individual sudens, and all billing and servicing would be per- Design Edior... We would no invie proponens of hese views o speak because hey hold views which violae known ruh: i.e., ha racism and genocide are immoral, and ha he earh is no fla. Graned, ruh abou heological maers is no always as easily accessible as ruh abou moral maers and as ruh abou physical phenomena, bu Caholics do have a reliable guide in docrinal maers: he Caholiic Church is an insiuion which claims o have he power o decide definiively and infallibly upon he ruh of cerain docrines and hus o have he power o decide which individuals arc rusworhy eachers of cerain ruhs. The Church has deermined ha Hans Kung is no a reliable eacher of Caholic heology. Finally, here is lile evidence ha Nore Dame holds as an absolue principle he posiion ha all viewpoins mus be heard: how ofen can one hear an invied speaker on he Nore Dame campus who recognizes he auhoriy of he magiserium and who speaks in suppor of he eachings of he Church? Some migh argue ha Nore Dame invies Jews, Proesans, and members of oher religions o speak on campus: why should she no invie dissening heologians as well? Obviously, members of oher religions do no speak for he Caholic Church--all hose who hear hem are aware ha have no power o define Caholic docrine. Bu we do hear oher Caholics who speak agains Church docrine very ofen on his campus. The Church, however, has no pronounced on heir finess o each Caholic docrine. Tha is no o say ha he Church migh no disapprove of much ha is said in he name of Caholic heology on his campus; neverheless, he Church canno be a wachdog for all abuses. Bu in he case of Hans Kung, a man who has caugh he public eye and who publishes a grea deal which depars from Church eaching, he Church mus make clear o he faihful ha his man, a Caholic pries, is no a reliable guide for Caholics in maers of he Faih. n wha capaciy, hen, is Faher Kung speaking on his campus? A debae forma would have been appropriae for his purpose: he 4uesion and answer period conduced on a random basis does no allow for rigorous examinaion of a speaker's views. Furhermore, how many of us are capable of judging he orhodoxy of Kung's views? And, finaly, why need we? The Church has made his judgmen. The public is mos cerainly going o hink ha Nore Dame is, in effec, scorning he Vaican wih his inviaion o Faher Kung. s he view of he public no a reasonable one o hold? n years pas such an acion by Nore Dame would have been called a scandal. They sill will be wihou he services of 7-1 cener Sam Bowie, who has been sidelined wih a fracured shin bone, bu hey have no seemed o miss his presence hus far. n Bowk's place, 6-3 guard Dirk Minnifidd has become he eam leader. The junior was he eam's co MVP las season, when he averaged jus under poins a game. Minnifield has a srong corps o lead, as well. Ten leermen have reurned from las year's squad, including sandous Derrick Hord. a 6-6 swingman, forwards Chuck Verderber and Charles Hur, along wih guards Dicky Deal and Jim Maser. LaSalle los four sarers from las season's squad, and will go wih lessexperienced players in a rebuilding aemp by Coach Lefy Ervin. 7-1 cener Tom Piorowski b he block on which Ervin is building his eam. The junior averaged jus under eigh poins per game las season, and was a ough rebounder. He is he only reurnee from las year's saring lineup ha wen Afer he Monday nigh game in Philadelphia, Nore Dame will ake on Virginia's Cavaliers in he second half of a home/neural and home/neural series. Las year's game was a classic, as Orlando Woolridge hi a 10-fooer wih ime running ou, and he rish upse he unbeaen and op-ranked Cavaliers. The sory of his eam is, of course, Ralph Sampson. The 7-4 cener could be he bes player in he college game oday. Gone are Jeff Lamp and Lee Raker, prime forces in he Cavaliers' Final Four enry of a year ago. Bu Ohell Wilson, a 6-0 guard, and Jeff Jones, his 6-4 backcour mae, arc coming ino heir own. Boh men averaged over six poins per game las year, despie he presence of Raker. The five-game rip winds up on he wes coas, where he rish ake on one of he counry's mos underraed eams, he San Francisco Dons. Coach Pee Barry reurns four sarers, including Quinin Dailey, one of he naion's bes guards. Wallace Bryan, a 7-0 cener, is one of he op rebounders in he counry, pulling in 10 per game. John Hegwood, like Bryan, a 16 poin per game scorer, pulls down eigh rebounds per cones himself.
