' 'Geing Ou '' raises ineresing issues n his somewha shelered, middle class world of a midwesern Caholic universiy campus, no many have heard he name Marsha Norman. Ye Marsha Norman may very well be one of he mos imporan playwrighs of our ime. Her plays arc no paricularly funny, nor are hey romanic in any sense of he word. They do no even move one o ears in any way we migh be accusomed o. Wha hey do convey arc incredibly powerful, poignan looks a cerain aspecs of sociey ha mos of us never sec, or even know exis. Geing Ou is such a play. This brillian new drama explores one woman's inner sruggle wih her pas as she aemps o escape a vicious circle of crime and povery. Geing Ou concerns Arlene, an ex-con jus released from prison afer having served an eigh year erm for murder. Alhough she has ruly changed during her incarnaion, she reurns o find ha no only is she sill reaed as she was before, bu is now held in higher suspicion and conemp. Arlene is consanly hauned by he rebellious, haeful person she used o be. This "Arlie" is played by anoher acress, and provides an ineresing hearical device as she plays ou for us various scenes from Arlene's memory of her pas. n Geing Ou, Marsha Norman presens us wih some disurbing quesions abou ourselves and he srucure of our sociey. Direcor Julie Jensen believes ha ".. he whole issue in his play is one of class and one of sex." As mos of us belong o he middle and upper classes, i is difficul, if no impossible, for us o undersand he life opions available o persons in he lower classes. All our lives we've been old ha if we work hard keep our noses clean, and ge a fe breaks, we will be successful in anyhing we choose o do. We've never had o make a choice beween barely surviving by washing dishes for $95 a week, or selling dope or hooking o make beer money. As Jensen says "The choice really isn': 'Do wan o be a hooker?' The choice is: 'Do need en dollars?' " "For us, he gae is open;" Julie Consider he Plunge T.J. Conley For mos Nore Dame and Sain Mary's sudens, a reference o "he American Ciy" produces a variey of conflicing images. Everyhing in he ciy becomes larger han life, a monsrous complexiy we can never hope o undersand. Eiher he ciy is imagined as an endless line of bombed-ou buildings, grim housing projecs filled wih people desined o live hier lives in povery and despair; or else he ciy is a magic place, filled wih all gliering buildings and enormous deparmen sores, a place of limiless opporuniy for all. Realiy, of course, is somewhere beween hese wo images. The Urban Plunge is a 48-hour immersion ino urban life which allows us o see pas hese sereoypes and ge a glimpse of he realiies of innerciy America. Sponsored by he Cener for Experimenal Learning, he Nore Dame Theology Deparmen, and he Office of Jusice Educaion a Sain Mary's, his onecredi course is an opporuniy o discover he ruh wihin he American ciy. The emphasis on he Plunge is personal experience. Before my PlJngc, mos of my knowledge abu urban life had come from a sociology exbook and he rear window of my car as drove hrough he ciy on my way o he subcrbs. had never experienced he ciy oher han as an area o pass hrough. On he Plunge,_ however, l lived in he ciy and became par of i for 48 hours. l changed from a passive observer o an acive paricipan. Perhaps for he firs ime, became involved wih a ciy and is peoples. And my view of i changed dramaically. To anoher plunger, any oher way of viewing he ciy "would be like looking in a fishbowl and observing... sk, sk, i mus be awful. The only way one can know how awful, how painful i is, is o live ha life, even if i is for only 48 hours." Viewed from his new perspecive, he ciy becomes more han jus a wo-dimensional landscape. comes alive, and is complexiies become apparen. As my undersanding of urban life changed during he Plunge, many of my simplisic explanaions and unjusified assumpions were sha- ered. could no longer afford o hide behind naive heories and callous objeciviies. Becoming direcly involved in urban life challenged me o move beyond hese superficial undersandings o a deeper recogniion of he dynamics of he siuaion, Obviously in 48 hours i is impossible o realisically experience urban life or o come o grips wih all of is complexiies. The purpose of he Urban Plunge is no o provide a comprehensive survey of he American ciy. Raher, i is an inroducion, an opporuniy o spend wo shor bu inense days in his new environmen wih he hope ha we will be able o ask some basic and essenial quesions aferwards. On my own Plunge, was bombarded wih images and impressions for 48 hours, and aferwards fel drained, almos burned ou. Ye he real challenge came afer, as ried o sor ou all ha had experienced and find some meaning in all of i. am cerainly no closer o finding answers now ha was before my Plunge, bu a leas now have a sense of which quesions o ask. This is he real purpose of he Urban Plunge: o raise he crucial quesions which challenge us o search for answers and soluions in he fuure. As one plunger suggesed, "One migh ask oneself, 'Wha can do o improve he siuaion, and for ha maer wha am doing o creae i?'" smiles, "bu from birh, hese people arc in a differen caegory. Never once, was he world open o hem. They had o make choices from a very narrow range." No one, paricularly no a woman, alks abou going o college; hey barely even alk abou going o high school. The imporan hing is o ge a job, any job, in order o survive. 'One of he grea srenghs of our poliical sysem always has been our endency o keep religious issues in he background." Here, l hink. is where he senaor is misaken. "Religious issues" are of wo kinds. denominaional and universal. Caholics may argue on and on wheher he clergy should be permied o marry. and Jews on wheher his pracice or ha violae kosher sandards. John Brown, swinging on a sour apple ree, may (like Na Turner) have profoundly misjudged wha mehods he Bible enjoins, or oleraes. Bu he was moved by he Bible and gave his life in pursui of his vision. There has seldom been an age in which "he religious issue" has been more poinedly direced a social policy. When Senaor Goldwaer in 1964 courageously voed agains he civil righs bill he did so profondly believing ha secions of i were unconsiuional in ha he hill gave o he governmen powers reserved under he Ninh and Tenh Amendmens for he sae and for he people. Bu he denunciaions of Senaor Goldwaer were sharpes from men of he cloh, noably he Rev. Theresa Coer Minneapolis, Minn. sraelis are paranoid on A WACs sale Dear Edior: n response o recen aricles on your ediorials page, l feel compelled o commen on he proposed sale of he A WACs o Saudi Arabia. The siuaion seems simple. The Unied Saes wans o sell some highly sophisicaed advancewarning airplanes o a good ally, Saudi Arabia, a counry ha is also he larges producer of crude oil in he Middle Eas oday. srael, and he majoriy of Jews in he Unied Saes, are opposed o his proposed sale, claiming ha he A WACs would endanger sraeli securiy. Therefore, Congress is being pressured by American Jews o voe down he sale, while he Reagan adminisraion is heavily lobbying for William F. And he need occasional ly o discipline he Supreme Cour used o be one of he favorie compulsions of Senaor Goldwaer. The aborion figh will, everyone hopes, sop shor of ha. Bu o say ha i is purely a religious issue, in he sense ha eaing fish on Friday is purely a religious issue, underesimaes he obligaions of he moral man o seek an answer o a quesion ha's roubling him oday as he issue of slavery was yeserday. happen o know Barry Goldwaer very well, and when he says, " 'm frankly sick and ired of he poliical preachers across his counry elling me as a ciizen ha if wan o be a moral person l mus believe in A, B, C, and D-jus who P.O. Ever since srael declared is independence in 1948, i has had several conlics wih various Arab saes, o he poin ha he Arabs (wih he excepion of Egyp) are considered he enemy - even in peaceime. srael coninually fears he Arabs; srael is are paranoiac in ha hey hink he Arabs are always planning and ploing agains hem. The presige of his counry will be jeopardized by he direc defea of our presiden's wishes. f Congress acs responsibly and voes for he sale, no only will he securiy of Saudi Arabia be increased, hu also overall world securiy will be grealy enhanced. Mike Beaudine Alumni Hall 'Fa Chicks' abuser defends Souh acions Dear Edior: This leer was born when he conroversy of "No Fa Chicks" began. Universal Press Syndicae heir lack of concern for he Godgiven gif of a healhy body. Wha i all boils down o, in ligh of he "guarding of he ice cream," is ha people are aking noice of he abuse ohers are causing hemselves. True, i is dreadful ha some may have fel ridiculed by hose acions, especially if hey are puing forh a sincere aemp o change. Every person ha has ever been on a die realizes ha much encouragemen is needed and a lile criicism goes a long way in desroying confidence. This leer is no mean o belile overweigh people who arc rying o gain conrol of heir bodies. Repors are wide-spread of major. cheaing in baskeball Accouns of players from single-family homes driving brand-new cars shorly before or afer signing o play a a given _school are common. 16 r Snors Thursday, Ocober 1, page 16 Faih helps Oliver wih pressure Senior co-capain Sami Kahale scored his eam-leading eigh goal of he season yeserday during Nore Dame's 6-0 vicory over he DePaul Blue Demons. The rish are now undefeaed in en games his season. See he sory on page 14. (Phoo by john Macor) By MKE MONK Spors Wrier A hushed silence descnded upon he previously boiserous crowd as he small placekicker srode confidenly on o he playing field. Jus a nome in he land of behemohs, ye he was no inimidaed; insead, he seemed o revel in he remendous challenge facing him. The kicker gingerly placed he small black ee on he plush green grass, carefully measured off hree seps, and prepared o make hisory. As he fooball was snapped, 59,000 Hail Mary's raced franically skyward. The placekicker moved courageously oward he fooball and swung his leg ino he pigskin wih all hee force of a canon. as he ball arced gracefuly across he clear blue sky, he heaven- bound Hail Ma_ry's unied o form an impenerable wall agains he cocky souh wind. As h'e final seconds icked impaienly off clock, he Digger in recruiing jungle Today is Ocober l. Tha means ha one phase of he recruiing season is over for Digger Phelps. NCAA regulaions say ha beween now and December 1, a college coach can have no conac wih high school ahlees oher han on he coach's own campus. has been a long summer for Phelps, who says he has pu more ime and effor ino recruiing his year han perhaps a any oher ime in his en years a Nore Dame. Life on he roads and baskeball cours of America have opened Phelps eyes o a sark realiy. There's a whole lo of cheain' going on ou here. "We are in a real minoriy here a Nore Dame," he says in disbelief. "There are some serious problems wih inercollegiae ahleics, and hings are no going o change unless we make a concenraed effor o change hem." Over he summer, former New Mexico baskeball coach Norm Ellenberger was conviced on 21 of 22 couns of fraud in connecion wih ranscrip-fixing and payoffs o his players. The judge in he case, however, se Ellenberger free. Sociey had forced Ellenberger o chea, he judge said. He was under such pressure o win, and o fill he arena, ha he had no alernaive bu o chea. The baskeball fans in he sae waned a winner, and hey didn' care how Ellenberger wen.abou geing one. n effec, he judge was saying ha wha he Lobos' coach had done was OK. Skip Desjardin foobal compleed is journey, gliding hrough he beckoning uprighs 51 yards away. Such is he suff ha legends are made of. And dn ha ho Sepember day in 1980, Harry Oliver joined a long lis of Nore Dame fooball immorals as he kicked he gamewinning field goal agains Michigan in Nore Dame Sadium as ime ran ou. Bu even oday, over a year laer, Oliver has no fully realized he magniude of ha lone kick. " jus don' hink of myself as a legend," Oliver confessed. "The imporance of ha kick hasn' hi me ye. Maybe 20 years from now when hear a bunch of guys alking abou ha game 'll feel a lile special. Bu righ now don' feel ha way." Oliver's kick agains Michigan was no fluke. The Moeller High School alumnus finished las year's campaign as one of he op placekickers -in he naion by booing 18 of 23 fleldgoals and finishing he season wih 73 poins, wo poins shor of he Nore Dame record. His success did no go unnoiced by he press as boh Fooball News and UP named him as a hird-eam all-america pick. Despie such achievemen, Oliver is sincerely modes. He does no feel comforable when elaboraing on his individual accomplishmens. Bu when he does, he gives credi where credi is due. Assisan Edior. " feel ha a grea deal of my success is reaed o my srong religious convicions," relaed "Tha's_unbelievable," Phelps says. "Those people are kidding hemselves if hey hink a successful eam will help keep he universiy financially solven. You can' possibly run a Universiy on he profis from spors. "f we are lucky here a Nore Dame, we gross $5 million from fooball and baskeball We sell ou all he ime, and we have grea revenue from TV and posseason play. Bu i akes $108 million every year o run his place. Where is he oher S 103 million coming from? "Winning won' save a universiy. Bu hey seem o hink i will. Tha's he problem wih spors in college oday." Phelps knows wha he's,alking abou. He spends ime in he homes of high school supersars who are being wooed and eniced by he bigges names in college baskeball, and he's having rouble compeing. "Le's say 'm recruiing a kid from Alabama, and some big sae school is offering him a car and cash," SeeJllNGLE, page 14 Oliver. "My belief in God and Our Lady has helped mehrough he rough imes." The life of a plackicker is cerainly a rough one. Placekicker is perhaps he mos menally demanding posiion in fooball is an emoional roller-coaser of ups and downs, and he remendous pressures inheren wih he job have ended he careers of many men wih weaker consiuions. "My faih has been insrumenal in helping me cope wih he pressures of he job," Oliver said. "Whenever missed a field-goal or exra poin in he pas, i would ge me down and negaively effec me on my nex aemp. Now realize ha, wih God's help, 'm doing my absolue bes. So now when miss a kick, don' le i boher me as much, and jus ry o look ahead o he nex opporuniy." Oliver's sory cerainy makes a srong case for he power of God. His developing success in he kicking game semed o be myseriously linked wih his increasing faih in God. "Freshman year, was absoluey errible," confesses Oliver wih a boyish grin. "Sophomore year was a lie beer, bu no much. was in he spring of ha year ha improved a grea deal." was also around his ime when Oliver sared o incorporae his faih wih fooball. The remendous success he garnered from such a favorabe merger hrus him ino he naional spoligh during he following fooball season. "My faih has helped ease a lo of he pressures ha accompany placekicking. Knowing ha God is wih me, feel more confiden Defore each kick. f miss he kick, don' worry abou i because know did my bes." The religious faih which is so imporan o Harry has resuled from several influences. " sared wih my parens, who provided me wih a very posiive environmen in which o grow. Then Coach Faus planed he seed during my years a Moeller and hen i reached fulfilllmen in he spring of my sophomore year." And ever since hen he's been kicking he hell ou of he fooball. So far in his young season, Harry has no ye been afforded he kicking opporuniies he experienced las year, bu he insiss ha he'll be prepared whenever hose chances arise. '''m in a good groove righ now and feel 'good abou he way 've been kicking in pracice," Oliver said. "Whenever hey need me, 'm ready." Does ha mean he would welcome anoher siuaion similar o he one he faced agains Michigan one year ago? "Well, le me pu i his way," he said as flashed ha charming boyish grin once again, " hope we win every game by hree ouchdowns." Perhaps no a realisic wish for he sruggling Fighing rish, bu one hing is for cerain; a more hones man han Harry Oliver you will never mee. Rebounding from Purdue ;preparing for MSU There's no much a coach can do or say o ease he pain afer he hearbreaking loss we suffered a Purdue las Saurday. was a game of emoional highs and lows for boh eams and for us i ended on he lowes possible noe. Wha made he defea so difficul o accep was ha our players showed such grea deerminaion in driving 50 yards in only 57 seconds for he go-ahead ouchdown only o be sunned minues laer by a series of grea plays by Purdue and some las second heroics by Sco Campbell and Seve Bryan. On our own drive i ook Phil Carer, our fine ailback, jus hree plays o go half he lengh of he fooball field. His final 30 yards for he ouchdown was an excellen display of his running abiliy. Unforunaely, Phil has seen limied acion so far his year because of a pulled hamsring he suffered on he firs day of fall pracice. Purdue, of course, mus be given a world of credi for he way hey were able o ravel 80 yards in almos wo-and-one half, minues, and o heir quarerback Sco Campbell for coming up wih he key plays ha kep he drive alive. His final wo passes, one for he ouchdown and he oher for he wo-poin conversion, were picure perfec. And when you consider all he pressure _he was under in boh siuaions, his performance becomes all he more remarkable. As some can imagine, our lockerroom was a solemn place following he game. Everyone had ha empy feeling ha comes afer losing a close, hard-fough game. is a feeling ha says wih you unil you win again. is also a feeling ha should serve as exra moivaion for he nex game. fel in he second half we moved he ball raher consisenly bu we jus couldn' ge i ino he end zone. Four imes we had he ball inside Purdue's 35-yard line and didn' ge any poins, and we've go o do beer han ha. Defensively, we have o ighen up hings and ge a lile more pressure on he quarerback. Our secondary didn' do a bad job of covering bu we gave Campbell oo much ime and he ofen made he play good by eiher hrowing on he run or running himself. Even so, we did some good hings a imes. We sopped Purdue hree imes on fourh down, and even when hey go down o our one-yard line in he las minue of he game, we go grea effors on he firs hree downs, even pushing hem back seven yards. Bu Campbell's fourh down pass play was he beginning of he end. This week we will be playing Michigan Sae, our hird Big Ten eam in a row and he firs of five consecuive home games in he nex six weeks. Michigan Sae's quarerback, John Leiser, is much he same kind of player ha Purdue's Campbell is, so our secondary and defensive line will again be severely esed. So far his season, Leiser has compleed 42 of 93 passes for SS3 yards and he has some excellen receivers in Daryl Turner, Ted Jones and Ois Gran. One of our big concerns, however, will be he healh of our defensive uni since here are some sarers sill on he doubful lis because of injuries. Two of he players, linebacker Joe Rudzinski and defensive end Pa Kramer missed he Purdue game and may no be ready o play his week. Two ohers, defensive ackle Bob Clasby and cornerback John Krimm, may have o si ou our game agains he Sparans. Offensively, we will be wihou he services of lef guard Randy Ellis, who was unable o make he rip las week, and Dave Condeni, our spli end who underwc n surgery Sunday afer susaining a knee injury in las Saurday's game. Because here are a number of doubful performers we will in all likelihood move oher players up from he junior varsiy eam. We were able o ge a number of hese players some playing ime las Sunday when hey played agains h<: Purdue reserves. Playing a four or five game s<:hedule gives he junior varsiy acual playing experience, he kind of av ion hey normally canno ge during pracice week. Our coaches hen have an opporuniy o view he film and arc 'able o check on he progress of each player, advancing hose ha demonsrae hey are capable of helping ou in posiions ha need added deph on he varsiy. also gives he players somehing o look forward o afer puing in a lm of work helping o prepare he varsiy for an upcoming game. The fun of playing in a game a any level is he reward for all he ime spen on he pracice field. The game following a defea becomes a double challenge for any eam. No only does if have o overcome he opponen, bu her's he furh:r challenge o prove o iself ha i can over( omc adversiy. Good eams do boh.
