Presiden Reagan and some op advisers have expressed an ineres in moving o a fla ax, and here have been predicions ha he budge he submis o Congress in January will call for such a radical change. 'f you're like he average suden of pas years, you'll hand over your wo bucks wihou giving i a second hough. Or, maybe if you're in a rebellious mood, you'll muer somehing abou "no change" and close he door. Some sudens refuse o give o he Unied Way campaign because hey say hey resen he pressure imposed on hem o donae. The fac ha he drive is run on a very personal, one-on-one soliciaion basis, wih secion leaders direcly approaching individuals seems o make some sudens feel hreaened. These sudens' refusal o conribue o Unied Way is based on he way hey perceive he drive as handled a Nore Dame. They feel ha if hey donae, hey will be giving because hey are obliged o, and no because hey are acing ou of a rue sense of chariy. Juniors John Bardsley and Tom Bogen, co-chairmen of his year's Unied Way campaign saff a Nore Dame say he campus drive is no designed in such a personal manner o induce "guil" conribuions. is simply he resul of several years of inense organizaion of he campaign. "We don' run i his way for pressure. 's for convenience. f (sudens) don' wan o give, we respec heir opinion... We hink here are ohers ou here who believe i is worhwhile," said Bardsley. 7 4 percen of he sudens paricipaed las year. Bu hose sudens who refuse o give because hey feel pressured should examine more closely he objecive of he Unied Way program. Nore Dame raised $8,600 during las year's drive. All conribuions are disribued o he 34 member organizaions wihin S. Joseph Counry. These agencies and services include he American Red Cross, he Menal Healh Associaion, he Salvaion Army, he Alcoholism Council and many more. The mos redeeming aspec of Unied Way is ha i acs as a blanke organizaion, making i unnecessary for he agencies involved o spend much ime and funds on donaion drives. n his manner, he agencies can concenrae on heir primary role of helping he communiy. The fac ha he S. Joseph Couny Unied Way managed o raise $2.8 million for hese agencies las year is admirable. Bu perhaps he fac ha he money was raised enirely by voluneers is even more significan. There sill are people in he world willing o help ohers wihou hough of moneary reward. A conroversy ha seems o arise each year in he minds of sudens is wheher Unied Way funds finance pro-aborion organizaions. The following is an excerp of a leer wrien by Joseph A. Greci, execuive direcor of he S. Joseph Couny Unied Way, ill response o he aborion quesion: Each Unied Way s locally organized and conrolled by he ciizens of he communiy i serves. Each makes is oum decisions concerning wha agencies o suppor. The Unied Way of S. joseph Couny does no include Planned Parenhood nor does i include agencies ha have aborion or aborion relaed aciviies. Bardsley commened on he aborion issue, saying "Any money given in his drive will no go o fund aborions... People would have problems wih ha and righ y so." n recen years he Sain Mary's Suden Governmen has voed no o suppor Unied Way, for reasons alledgedly relaing o he aborion issue. This year, however, his sand was reversed afer he faculy approached Suden Governmen and asked for heir suppor of Unied Way. Suden Body Presiden Kahleen Murphy says Suden Governmen plans o se up a Unied Way commiee ha can be used year o year o promoe fundraisers. Preliminary plans for he campaign will be discussed a Sunday's Suden Governmen meeing. Murphy says ha she doesn' wan o se up a compeiion beween dorms, in he manner in which he NO program is organized. "We don' wan people o feel obligaed o give - we wan people o wan o give," she said. Alhough i's oo lae for his year's drive, Nore Dame and Sain Mary's should make plans o unie heir campaigns nex year. has aken NO approximaely seven years o reach is presen level of organizaion. would probably ake Sain Mary's jus as long o reach a comparable level. Cooperaion beween he wo schools would enhance he early effors of he Sain Mary's paricipaion and hus achieve beer resuls han if he campaigns remain separae. Brogen sees he conribuion drive as an educaional experience similar o requess ha will be made of us when we ener he working world. When we graduae and go ou ino he "real world," such requess will be numerous. will be up o us o examine hem and deermine which are worhwhile. As for he Unied Way drive his week, he ulimae decision o conribue can only be made by he individual. Bu in he long run, he acual value of a conribuion would far ouweigh any well-meaning plans o cleanse he sysem by refusing o donae. Tyson saed ha financial aid could be a prioriy in he near fuure. n he pas, Nore Dame has relied heavily on federal funds for financial aid, bu he federal aid siuaion has become very uncerain under he Reagan adminisraion. Tyson said ha he adminisraion is no insensiive o he financial needs of he sudens, bu he building of a financial aid endowmen requires ime. Undergraduae enrollmen will no be increase<l in he near fuure, according o Tyson. This is primarily due o housing limiaions. This ceiling on undergraduae admission is one reason why Nore Dame has no adoped open access admission. Anoher reason why quoas will probably remain on women's admission is he close relaionship of Nore Dame wih Sain Mary's College. According o Tyson, Nore Dame's commimen o free inquiry and fideliy o he Roman Caholic Church are crucial elemens in he school's characer, bu hese prioriies are consanly being ariculaed and inerpreed in differen ways. One fuure challenge for Nore Dame will lie in is mission as boh a Caholic and an academic insiuion. Jesse Jackson, prediced an upse vicory over Wallace as clear skies and mild emperaures inspired a medium-o-heavy urn-ou. Wallace, now 63 and confined o a wheelchair since he was sho in an assassinaion aemp 10 years ago, already has been governor a record hree imes. Bu recaning his segregaionis sands of old, he resurfaced afer a four-year layoff from poliics, saying he now represens "he average man and woman, black and whie." Yeserday's Democraic primary runoff also feaured Supreme Cour Jusice Oscar Adams' bid o become he firs black eleced o saewide office in Alabama. Adams, who was appoined o he cour o fill a vacancy in 1980, was opposed by former Public Service Commissioner Jim Zeigler. The winner mees Republican Tom Hayden in November. Wallace, who proclaimed "segregaion forever" in his inaugural and sen roopers afer black voing righs marchers wo years laer, compeed wih McMillan for black voes his ime. 5 The Observer Ras esed Possible cure for alcoholics? WEST LAFAYETTE, ND. (AP) - The same chemical which makes alcoholic lab ras shun liquor could work as a cure for alcoholism in humans, a Purdue Universiy pharmacology professor said yeserday. Joseph Zabik ~aid a high concenraions of seroeonin, common in human and animal issue, could creae an aversion o alcohol in ras over several generaions of lab animals. "We've found ha if we make enough seroonin available o he nervous sysem, an animal which has craved alcohol will no even ouch i," Zabik said. Because ras biological machinery is much like humans', Zabik said seroonin may be able o be used o help human alcoholics. To curb ras' appeie for liquor, Zabik gave hem fluoxeine, a chemical ha indirecly increases he amoun of seroonin available o he neural recepors, he nerve endings ha receive and ransmi simuli. Earlier sudies end o suppor he relaionship of increased seroonin o decreased alcohol inake by ras, he said. "We used a differen chemical - one ha was convered o seroonin... Zabik noes ha he and his associaes found ha, like people, some ras like alcohol more han oher ras do. n Zabik's experimens, each animal has a choice of alcohol in differen concenraions, or waer. The ras are sared on low concenraions of alcohol, and if hey drink ha, are sessively higher concenraions unil each levels off a a concenraion a which alcohol makes up o a leas half of he animal's oal daily liquid consumpion. "Obviously, from he firs ime hey ase (alcohol), i's doing somehing for hem ha reinforces heir desire for more," he said. "'s a very posiive hing for hem, because hey're no under any sress, any pressure... No one is coercing hese ras o drink, jus as no one coerces humans o drink. There's a freedom of choice." Bu even if he ras have nohing o drink bu alcohol, remarks Zabik, heir consumpion markedly decreases when hey're given fluoxeine, a compound discovered by Eli Ully and Co., he ndianapolis drug firm. He adds ha he drug-induced aversion o alcohol ends o wear off in a day or so, and mus be periodically adminisered orally or by injecion. Zabik said he seroonin reamen would differ from oher reamens for alcoholism. "The only oher esablished chemical approach is use of Anabuse, or disulfiram, and wih ha a person is presened wih a siuaion where if he drinks alcohol under he influence of he drug he's hreaened wih becoming violenly ill," Zabik said. "So An ab use serves as a cruch - i suppors he alcoholic's absinence hrough fear, bu i never akes away he desire per se." Treamen wih fluoxeine seems o produce no physiological reacion oher han o radically reduce he inake of alcohol Zabik. Zabik said a carefully designed long-erm clinical evaluaion is needed o deermine wheher human alcoholics could be successfully reaed by his mehod. He said he drug is being exensively esed. 7 ~ Ediorials Wednesday, Sepember 29, page 7' Why professors have a bad name On many occasions have sumbled across ha ime-worn headline, "Why Johnny Can' Read." believe his quesion ineviably begs anoher, "Why Can' Prof Teach?" Ye, here is a spliner of he faculy whole ha leaves us wih he bad ase in our mouhs when we examine academics a Nore Dame. They are no necessarily he professors who are difficul, or who grade our work lower Rober lloyd Snyder Mid-week han we would like. These are he professors who seem genuinely irriaed by sudens who raise difficul quesions, who refuse o see sudens asking for addiional insrucion ouside of class, and who ponificae over P.O. One professor consanly smelled so rank ha a nauseous suden escaped from class o hrow up. Anoher insrucor slurred one ofhe mos amiable sudens on campus as a "lazy Spic." Sill anoher, a he end of a segmen of maerial for he course, solicied correcions in his insrucion of maerial, saing, " may be wrong on some of.he maerial, bu his is no my field of experise." A professor who assigned my class a raher weighy novel as a "major porion of your grade" fell so far behind on his syllabus ha he failed o even discuss he book in class, much less even es upon i. And he piece de resisance, he professor who wen o bed wih one of his sudens and laer refused o acknowledge he suden for he remainder of he semeser. ndeed, he large majoriy of he professors a Nore Dame are highly compeen professional who consisanly perform excellen work day afer day. A number of professors go ou of heir way o be hdpful o sudens - immediaely coming o mind are Professors Edward Goerner and Michael Francis in he governmen deparmen, Professors John Mahias and Lynn Theismeyer in he English deparmen, Professor Doug Kinsey in he ar deparmen, and Professor McCabe in he psychology deparmen. Rich Huner in he business college, a former Senior Fellow, is famous for his willingness o assis sudens, wheher hey acually are in his classes or no. am sure here are a hundred more names which easily could be added o his lis. Ye, he excellence ofhese professors does no excuse he callous behavior oward sudens by some of he faculy. would be easy o aack he enure sysem, bu really don' undersand he sysem, oher han o see ha i has failed. Alienaion of a suden plays absoluely no par in educaion - especially a Nore Dame, where he school emphasizes "he need o help ohers," and where he professors are paid reasonably well by sudens who mus ofen sruugle o mee he coss of Nore Dame. The faculy (and adminisraion?) should remember ha he universiy exiss for he sudens, and no o suppor he world of acadamia. 9 - ---~--~--.-, The Observer Feaures Secion Wednesday, Sepember 29, page 9 M Synhesizing he fuue usic, like manv oher fields of enerainmen, is succepible o rends which can run heir course, or change he field permanenly. One such rend in oday's music definiely has he poenial o cause permanen change. and for ha reason i canno be ignored. The rend in quesion is he synhesizer's increasing commercial accepance in popular music and is use by a growing number of new bands. s imporance is derived from hose observaions and oher facs inc! uding is relaive ease of operaion and is abiliy o do anyhing musically. These menioned Pa Beaudine music reasons have caused is remendous influence on England's rock scene and is noiceable impac on America's airwaves in he form of such groups as The Human League, Sof Cell. and many oher bands.jeffbeck and Pee Townshend have even gone o he exen o remark ha he synhesizer will evenually phase ou he guiar. This possibiliy is hard o accep no only because i was said by wo guiar heroes, bu also because once guiars disappear, so will he innovaive and macho guiaris. The chance of his occurence is nonexisen, however. One reason ha synhesizer will no replace he guiar is became of is lack of any visual impac a concers, or on video. Since he synhesizer can produce bass. lead, and rhyhmic riffs ha usually were played by guiars, here are no guiariss on sage o prance around and aun he audience by playing near he crowd. :\!any people go o a concer o see a complee show and a large par of ha producion is he guiaris's anics. n conras, he musician playing he synhesizer is sranded and can no generae any exciemen while siing on his bench. He is isolaed from his audience because he can no play near he crowd and can no move while he plays. This is one reason ha many piano players receive lile aenion and a small share of he spoligh. Because of his loss of visual impac concer halls will no sell ou and record sales will suffer. A alened, guiar dominaed band, however, has more o offer, since people will always pay o see a Keih Richard. Angus Young, or Rick Springfield because hey do somehing, wheher i be prancing around, or jus plain looking prey. ~ hoped you enjoyed las week's quiz. really have been wriing his for over wo years, and hope you have had as much fun wih i as have had. Tim Neely rock rivia This week begin he hird vear of he quiz wih an all-new opic. :\ore deails below. Bu firs... here are he answers o las week's anniversary quiz, on he origins of group names:. San Francisco band ook is name from a sick joke abou a blues singer -Jefferson Airplane (couresy of Blind Lemon jefferson) 2. Took is name from he irs names of Messrs. Anderson and Council - Pink Floyd 3. Named afer Wes Coas uiliy - Pacific Gas and Elecric 4. From Ausralian aborigine erm for a very cold evening - Three Dog Anoher reason ha he guiar will remain is because music's naure is very cycle orienaed. Boh folk rock and disco, for example, mainained exreme populariy for a relaively shor ime unil heir cycle ran is full course. Boh of hese genres sill have influence on music, bu surely have no produced vas permanen changes. The synhesizer is currenly a cycle of populariy ha will undoubedly increase as he insrumen is explored and developed, bu will ail off and no be able o mainain a raing's clip high enough o replace he guiar. f i did reain all is populariy and he guiar was acually replaced, hen every band would play synhesized music and every lis- ener would buy synhesized music. This insance of an exreme change is highly improbable and ridiculous o even consider. Tha exreme change is improbable also because here will always be a group of romanics, nosalgia buffs, and guiar fans ha enjoy ha insrumen's sound for one reason or anoher. The romanics will always idolize he sud guiaris and his ideals, he nosalgia buffs will worship he guiar's sound because i was a par of heir youh, and basic guiar fans eiher like he way i looks, plays, or sounds because of aesheics. These people will always remain and he guiar will be perpeuaed in hem, even if populariy oally shifs o he synhesizer. The synhesizer is also very incongruous wi h he ideals of rock. Good rock and roll has always been sponaneous, exciing, imeless, and even somewha rebellious. "My Generaion", by The Who is a perfec example of a grea song because he whole band's inerracion is sponaneous, and because he song sill excies and inspires audiences seveneen years afer is release. People may argue ha Sof Cell's "Tained Love" is exciing, bu no radio saion will sill be playing ha song five years from now. because i has no hallmarks of a imeless classic like "My Generaion" or "Saisfacion" by he Rolling Sones. The synhesizer definiely will no have he impac o replace he guiar or engender oher exreme change, bu is poenial can no be ignored. Thus far, only The Human League and Sof Cell have made significan commercial breakhroughs. bu he fuure carries opporuniy. Tha opporuniy would be fully seized if he new syn commercial appeal while being froned by a charismaic, dominan leader like Mickjagger or Jim Morrison. Once his happens, hen synhesized music will be esablished and can run is course and reveal is influence on he music field. c c Tivia quiz 50 Nigh 5. Trivia will no appear nex Wednesday, bu in Friday's paper wih he special secion on The Who, as Mr. Neely will be providing a quiz on ha group in celebraion of heir new album and final concer our. -. PETE TOWNSHEND Poey in vinyl '[)ec Townshend and The Who have been inseparably conneced r for so long ha i is difficul o consider he work of one wihou alluding o he influence of he oher; he group has always had Townshend for a guiding force, and he has always drawn heavily on he influence of he group o work ou his solo albums. All he Bes Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes is no excepion o he rule; bu whereas Townshend's las album, Empy Glass, seemed a work The Who migh have done ifhey had ime, his newer work, while rife wih songs whose musical syle and one hearkens back o previous group effors, is of iself compleely and exclusively Townshend. Joe musumeci album review Townshend has made a name for himself as a geniu-s of musical arrangemen as well as one of rock's foremos lyriciss; i becomes immediaely obvious ha he laer was his major concern on Eyes. No ha he music is dissappoining - in fac, wo or hree cus belong in he Townshend hall of fame. Bu he lyrics of every song are of such consisenrly high qualiy ha he lyric shee could survive on is own as a work of lieraure. Townshend recognizes his, and raher han singing all he lyrics on he album (and he does his wih his usual skill for rock vocalizing) revers o a sor of jim Morrison/Moody Blues echnique and more or less chans some of he mos resounding passages in analmos eerie voice. would like o quoe from he lyrics, bu find canno do so meaningfully; o do so would require more space han his review permis, for each song is so well consruced as o prohibi aking one or wo lines ou of conex. Townshend, like any good poe, has a marvelous faciliy of rhyme; bu also, he has he common sense o know ha lines need no rhyme o be musically pracical. The songs are all loosely ied ogeher hrough he heme of every man's imporance in he world and he effec his lifesyle has on he degree of ha imporance. n he second cu, "The Sea Refuses No River". an image of life as a flowing river is insigaed, and i reassers iself subly hroughou he lengh of he album. Musically, he album is a cornucopia of sylisic flavors. Towshend akes a few new looks a his direcion as a composer, as well as reexamining some old sounds from previous Who collecions. The aforemenioned "The Sea... "seems a new aack on he melodiously sof approach common o The Who by Numbers; a well-modulaed harmonica in he background of he piece conjures up almos angible images of he ile. One song alludes o is origin in he ile: "Face Dances ", and indeed, i migh have worked beer in he las group album han some maerial ha was included herein. The song begins wih a wonderfully ligh-heared keyboard run ha reminds one of he inro o ha album's "Making records". "Exquisiely Bored" is one of he bes unes on he album, a sor of" Hoel California" from a differen poin of view; he sound is reminiscen of Who Are You wih jus a ouch ofempy Glass hrown in for good measure. is in his cu ha he infamous guiar chords are mos eviden, sill effecive bu played beneah he excellen keyboard work. is here one realizes ha Townshend, renowned as one of he greaes rock guiariss in he indusry, has begun o be much more ineresed in he possibiliies of he keyboard in his composiions. n Empy Glass, he synhesizer found iself a major par of he orchesraion, bu i was in Face Dances ha he piano and keyboard picked up mos of he melodies. n Chinese Eyes his approach has aken full roo, and while he guiar work is sill ineresing and as compeen as one migh expec, i is he keyboard which forms he backbone of his album. Alogeher, wheher one sees i as a new approach from an old maser, a precursor of he new group album, or a maserpiece of rock lyricism, A/ he Bes Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes is one of he mos ineresing and worhwhile albums ofhe year T

The junior ailback will be sorely missed for hree reasons. Firs, he is an excellen running back and pass receiver. His lighning speed and overpowering srengh make him a complee player. n wo seasons wih he rish (including his year's Michigan game) he has rushed for nearly 700 yards on 117 carries, averaging almos six yards a carry. One of he few brigh spos of las season's embarrassing loss o Miami (Fla.) was his 98-yard kickoff reurn. Bu.perhaps he rish will miss Bell he mos because of he incenive he gives o saring ailback Phil Carer. Carer and Bell have been dueling for he saring job since las spring.
