1 new5 'W7 '"' DECEMBER::1990 FROM RABB WEBER t s Frday evenng and the mother of tomorrow's Bat Mtzvah walks proudly to the bma to lght the candles She reads the words beautfully wth grace and dgnty She strkes the match and touches ts flame to the end of each candle's wck As she closes her eyes to recte the prayer the congregants watch the flames burn along the length of the two wcks She opens her eyes just n tme to see the flames reach the base of the wcks sputter brefly and dsappear n a wsp of dark smoke Havng sad the beracha and facng her famly frends and two wckless unlt candles she wonders why she ever had chldren Snce ths s the Season of Lghts thought t would be the rght tme to present a short lesson on candle lghtng to avod such traumatc experences ether n temple or at home t s really very smple to lght the candles and keep them lt but only f you know the secret Here's the secret: When you lght the candles do not just touch the match to the end of the wck; all that does s lght the lttle strng whch wll burn out when t reaches the wax nstead place the match next to the wck near the top of the candle tself Hold t there for a whle untl the candle wax begns to melt and feed the flame Ths way you start the candle burnng whch s the purpose of the whole endeavor t takes a few moments longer but t saves tryng to dg more wck out of the candle wth your fngernal! never thought much of ths lttle secret untl a frend Rabb Jeff Mller of Congregaton Sons of srael taught me about a specal connecton between candles and Jews He too notced the tendency of people to shove the match toward the wck and then move on as soon as t began to burn He too realzed that the only way to keep the candle burnng was to brng the flame closer and hold t there for a whle And he sad t s the same for Jews: f we want the fre of Judasm to burn brghtly nsde us we need to get close to ts source for more than one bref moment at a tme What knd of "Jewsh fre" would we want to have burnng nsde? For some t s prde prde n our accomplshments prde n srael prde n the hertage of the Maccabees For others t s ruach sprt the warmth we feel when we share n agesold songs tradtons and prayers And for others t s neshama the glow of a Jewsh soul whch affects the way we lve and see the world For most of us t s the fre we hope to pass on to our chldren and grandchldren as Olympc (contnued )

Can we start a strong roarng fre from droppng our kds at the temple door for relgous school? s t enough to lght the Hanukkah candles and gve presents wthout tellng the story and all the stores the Maccabees fought to preserve? Thnk of the candles Each candle on the Hanukkah menorah s mportant and dfferent Each must be lt n ts own specal way; each bums at ts own speed; each has ts own style and beauty So s each one of us dfferent and mportant The same "fre" wll not kndle the same glow wthn each of us but each Jewsh soul adds lght and lfe to our people and our world We need only make sure that our fres lke the Shabbat candles have the chance to burn May the warmth and sweetness of ths Hanukkah season nspre each of us to come a lttle closer stay a lttle longer and feel a lttle more deeply the fre and passon whch s our hertage Ths truly s our Eternal Lght Happy Hanukkah!
