Say lttle and do much, And receve everyone wth a cheerful countenance. Do not separate yourself from the communty; n a place where there are no men, trve to be a man. Before judgng your fellowman, Put yourself n hs place. f am not for myself, who wll be for me? Yet, f am for myself alone, of what good am J? Who s wse? He who learns from all men. Who s strong? He who s master over hs mpulses. Who s rch? He who rejoces n whatever s hs porton. Who s honored?.. He who honors hs fellowmen. Do not say, "When have lesure shall study"; You may never have lesure; Therefore set a fxed tme for the study of the Torah. The more possessons one has, the more anxety; But the more Torah, the more lfe. Let not your learnng exceed your deeds, Lest you be lke a tree wth many branches and few roots. Knowledge of Torah avals much. Yet the chef purpose of ts study s the dong of God's wll. The more understandng ore has, the more rghteousness; The more rghteousness, the more peace. -The Talmud. Wolpaw, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.arry Wolpaw, won frst place n " Speak for Democracy" speech contest co-sponsored by the Junor Chamber of Commerce and rado statons WHK, WTAM, and WGAR. Congratulatons!. SOMETHNG PRACTCAL There s no doubt as to the prmary task of the Church: t can be exp'ressed n one word, and that, the word, worshp. am well aware that to thousands of people such a statement s bound to be source of rrtaton and annoyance. Surely, they say, the Church has somethng more practcal to do n these days of economc stress and nternatonal rvalry and dssenson! The Church has other thngs to do, but" f t s to do them and do them well, t must lve, and ts lfe depends on ts worshp. Let t ne.glect or abandon that, and t has lost ts ntegratng prncple, the source and secret of ts vtalty and power. The Quakers have a magnfcent record n the, feld of socal servce, but how long would they survve as a Chrstan body f they gave up ther meetngs for worshp'? These meetngs are the center and core of the whole movement. As wth the Quakers, so wth all true churchmen, and so wth us here. Ths church whch cost so much to buld and whch t costs so much to mantan, was reared for the worshp of God., Ths servce s the damond pvot around whch all the agences of the congregaton revolve. And why? Because we 'realze that practcal urgences must never be permtted to blnd us to the eternal vertes. We serve God and our fellows, but we are careful to put the servce of God frst. That s somethng we dare not let drop! Always we must set ourselves to survey the contemporary scene from the vewpont of eternty, and work out here what we have seen there. The "heavenly vson" must be the most formatve nfluence we know, gvng to our mnds perspectve, to our characters stablty, to our actvtes drecton and nspraton. R. J. McCRACKEN THE RVERSDE CHURCH To all Dr. McCracken says about the, chutch, we of the Synagogue can say a double Amen. -B. R. B. JEWSH BOOK MONTH NOV.26 DEC. 26, 1948
