Dr. Carl Manuel, Jr. Pastor Softball Team Plays On Volume Join us for Sunday School 9:45 am Worship Service 11:00 am The Men's Softball Team opened play in the Spring season in April and currently stands with a 5-1 overall record in the Fellowship Church League. With four more regular season games to be played (Monday nights) before the season ending Tournament, the Team is gearing up for a top seeding position. Other teams in the league include: Ardmore Baptist, Augsburg Lutheran, College Park Baptist, Faith Church, First Presbyterian, Holy Family, and Reynolda Presbyterian. This month's game include June 4th - 7:30 pm vs. Ardmore at WP #4 June 11th- 6:30 pm vs. Reynolda at WP #1 June 18th- 7:30 pm vs. College Park at WP #1 June 25th- Tournament TBD

2 the hands of Jesus Christ. Every year I look forward to attending the WNCC and seeing my friends and pastors of the conference. On June 10, 2018, we will have our first annual Music On the Hill at 6pm. I am asking that each member of our church come and bring your family and friends for an evening of fun and fellowship. June 17, 2018, we will celebrate Father's Day at 11am. We have a great preacher who I have asked to bring the Father's Day message to the Burkhead family. Come one, come all to this Father's Day celebration. HAPPY FATHER'S DAY Greetings my sisters and brothers of Burkhead UMC. As we move into the Summer Season of 2018, I pray that you will take the Lord with you during this time in your life. In spite of the pictures that have been drawn by the world, we still have been and we all are blessed to see the beautiful flowers daily as we make our way into another Summer Season in the city of Winston-Salem. June is the time when all pastors, laity, youth, family and friends get our hearts and minds together to travel to the NC mountains for the annual WNCC meeting which will take place June 21-24, This is a busy time for all who will attend, and a time when I can see the beautiful mountains in the Western part of the Tar Heel state made by Reminder - starting July 1, 2018, Sunday School will start at 8:45am. Church will start at 10am. These times will remain for the month of July. Feel free to come to church Summer Casual. Continue to pray for our sick and shut in members, sisters and brothers in Greensboro and the state of Texas. The world was touched on May 18, 2018 by a former pastor of this city, The Right Holy Rev. Dr. Michael Curry, Bishop of the Episcopal Church, as he preached from the bottom of his heart to the world on the POWER OF LOVE. What a message to the new Royal Couple and the world. All obligations have been paid including 1/10 of conference and district apportionments, making 30% of our obligation paid for the year. $3,545 of the total received was for the Capital Campaign, making total received for Capital Campaign to date $12,145. 4 Burkhead News June 2018 Do you enjoy chicken pies? Konnoak Hills UMC will be making pies Monday, June 11th and delivering them to the church Thursday, June 14th. The large pies are $10 and a bag of 3 small pies is $10. If you would like some, please have your order and payment to the office before June 8th. They will not be making pies again until mid-august so stock up now! Bereavement Meal Teams 13th 19th 19th 24th 24th 29th For a member of our church who dies, preparing a meal or reception for their family and long-time friends is the last gift of love and respect a church can give to the member. To do this, we need volunteers to serve on Bereavement Teams. If you will serve on a team, please let Beth Dixon know. We expect it to be an exciting day of recalling Burkhead history and looking toward Burkhead future. Special guests for our expanded service that day will be Rev. Robert Bobby Nations, former associate pastor in the early 1980 s; and Peter Kairoff, long-time music director and pianist. Other special guests and activities are being planned, so watch for that news in the weeks to come. Mark your calendars and invite your family and friends today. 5 Outreach Opportunities Burkhead Reaches Out Thank you to everyone who donated money to buy new books for the second graders at Old Town Elementary School. The books have been purchased and delivered to the school for distribution at the end of the school year. This project gives each child in the school a new book to read over the summer. This is an important project as getting books into the home helps the children with their literacy skills and puts books into homes that may not have reading materials in them. Our church sponsors the whole second grade, which this year has 105 students. This is similar to our Little Free Library project and Reading at Open Arms Community. The Little Free Libraries make books accessible to children and adults in our church neighborhood, at Open Arms Community, and at the Potter's House. Our Reading Program at Open Arms has reached 25 children each week through this whole year. In addition to reading with the children, we also give them books to read and we take them on special outings -- some just for fun, and some to give them new experiences and broaden their horizons. We have taken trips to museums, concerts, plays, bowling, a train trip, library visits, and special celebrations such as a Dr. Seuss birthday party. With our outings, we try to include reading that goes along with the event. Each of the children who have been participating have also received a new book as we come to the end of the school year. The program isn't ending, as we will be meeting during the summer as well. Gale Sink and Greg Lisle have been faithful volunteers at this program. We meet on Thursday afternoons and we could use more volunteers to help! If you are interested, contact Gale Sink to find out about the upcoming schedule (summer gives us more opportunities to go places so our schedule varies). "You're never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child." --Dr. Seuss Another big thank you to everyone who donated school supplies for the Greensboro Tornado Relief project. About 300 school supply items were donated and taken to the Greensboro Educator Warehouse where they will be distributed to teachers and students who need them. Reaching out to our neighbors in Greensboro with these donations was a great way to show our care for them in their time of need. Big Brother/Big Sister Event Plan to join us on Saturday, June 9th as we host an activity for about 12 children who are on the waiting list to be matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister. We will be at the Sink's house, 318 Wyntfield Drive in Lewisville from 11:00am - 1:30pm. We will enjoy fishing, boating, games and a cookout lunch. Volunteers are needed to help with the activities, help with the lunch, and donate food for the event. There is a sign up sheet on the information table. It will be a fun day for everyone, so don't miss out on it! At any given time, there are about 100 children waiting to be matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister. To keep them engaged and knowing they haven't been forgotten, events such as this are held periodically for them. Help us treat these children to some fun, positive role modeling, and love from Burkhead Church
